MyTouch 3G Slide Impressions

scaled.IMG_1011

The first impressions of the latest MyTouch device are in, and positive.  If you have been doubting the MyTouch 3G Slide at all, you should reconsider, especially when full reviews come in.

PhoneDog – “I got a chance to check the phone out over lunch with some T-Mo reps last week, and in a word I came away very, very impressed and excited for myTouch Slide to launch….I mean, c’mon: Finally an Android device with a hard QWERTY I think I can get behind, and it’s got all of these other tricks up its sleeve, too? How could I not be excited?”

MobileCrunch – “In a perfect world, every phone would be like the T-Mobile MyTouch Slide. It’s small, it’s light, it has a keyboard, and it’s easy enough for almost everyone to use even if it’s running one of the most powerful mobile OSes out there.”

Engadget – “We had a chance to play around with the handset a bit, and there’s quite a bit about it that’s an improvement over previous T-Mobile Android offering”

Gizmodo – “The myTouch 3G Slide could go either way: A family-friendly Android phone with an awesome Sidekick-y keyboard, or, much like its name, a godawful conglomeration of disjointed parts.”

Pictures after the break!

  • Cruzz563

Wish the processor was at least 800MHz, dunno if I’ll be trading my G1 for this. It’s processor is 500-something. Yes this has more RAM but still. Feels half-hearted in that area. The rest of the phone is great, if only that processor was faster. Coming out in July, so maybe there will be another, faster, Android phone for us by then.

    • ryan

I’m sorry to break your heart but considering the MyTouch line is Tmobile’s pride and joy, they will definitely not release something to compete with it. They want to market the MyTouch line as THE android phone for T-Mobile. If they released a Snapdragon phone around the same time, what do you think would happen to MyTouch Slide sales?

I think we might get a snapdragon android phone in 2012 or 2013 once everyone else starts releasing 3ghz quad core phones. On the upside we’ll probably get an HSPA+ Win 6.5 phone in November!! YEAH!

      • Cruzz563

        Look everyone, a troll.

  • linda

i really want this phone. i just wish it came in blue…

  • soon2TMO

ohhh it looks so nice!… if the samsung galaxy S doesn’t come out this summer, i am getting this one.. ill patiently wait till august before getting it..
there is a big chance the samsung GS might come out this summer coz there is alredy a video ad for it, but if it doesnt come to tmo this summer… well, hello there mytouch slide! lol

    • ryan

There is a T-Mobile Galaxy S ad??? Link??

    • john

@ Ryan, Memoir, T929 (Behold w/a better camera)

  • soon2TMO

^^ by the way , it is not a tmobile video ad of samsung galaxy s, but an ad of the phone which indicates it will be launched soon, it is either for att or tmo or both..

    cant wait! :)

  • Penny

Yeah I’d trade my brand new hd2 for that!!!

    • PHONE FREAK

      Nah, I’d keep them both.

      • Penny

Well I’ll keep my nexus one, but the hd2 would be good trading material. If it had android, I’d keep it! :)

  • Alessandra

I love the red one! I want one in red since red is my favorite color and the keyboard looks almost similar to the Sidekick, the difference is that this has a 4-row keyboard, the Sidekick has a 5-row keyboard but it’s still nice, I hope the buttons are good enough to type on it.

  • Max

I think I’m going to wait on the Samsung Galaxy S aka BEHOLD III

  • JaylanPHNX

I’m probably going to get my wife this phone. She’s not a big techie, and all the early impressions say it’s designed for the beginner. The processor is actually 600mhz (from all I’ve read) which is still better than my Cliq XT (and the extra ram should be a real boost). This for my wife, the Galaxy S (please!) for me, and our phone life will be good.

  • HD2/NEXUS ONE USER

after have two snap dragon phones there is no way i could go backwards but the phone looks pretty solid for the average consumer

  • http://danglinginvective.blogspot.com Mark

I see this phone as a good “hand holder” for someone just starting out with Android or smartphones in general.

I doubt I will be dropping my G1 for this. Not enough horsepower. I don’t know RAM/ROM size, but I doubt that will be enough too.

I moved from VZW to T-Mo for the android experience. Do I really have to move back to get a good phone at a subsidized rate? Even though I came close to ordering one in January, I won’t buy a Nexus One without at least holding it first.

T-Mobile is letting Verizon eat its Android lunch.

    • watbetch

Not enough horsepower over the G1? You’ve got to be kidding me.

      • tomato

        +1 !!

    • Noel

The Nexus one feels gr8 in hand and a very cool phone unlike the HD2 which even though an awesome device aswell feels a lil big in hand. I will tell u one thing though..the battery on the N1 sucks, it can’t even keep charge for a day…Htc and Google have to come up w/ a better batt…maybe 1800mAh. I bought mine with a spare batt…ridiculous i have to carry that around. But the phone itself is awesome…if not the best.

    • al

I agree. T-Mobile gets left behind again with no decent handset while Verizon, Sprint and ATT get a huge heads up. If T-Mo is not getting something like the Motorola Shadow or HTC Evo very soon, I’m jumping ship.

      • watbetch

T-Mobile is getting an HSPA+ smartphone that is likely to be the Desire or something like it, they’ve already mentioned it. HSPA+ isn’t here yet but the upgrades are coming, I’m getting much faster download speeds now.. but I don’t want HSPA+ smartphone with a plain old 3G network

  • A.Minor

Tmo just comes out with kiddy phone after kiddy phone. Where’s the Android for grown ups?

    • servo

      nexus one… with keyboard…?

      • tomato

+1 And in the meantime, this phone might do just fine.

  • Green Robot

It looks like a solid mid-range device that has a lot to offer. TMO does however need at least one solid high-end device in their lineup. By the way, here’s what Engadget sad about the processor:
“and we suspect that the lack of a more modern CPU (the Slide has an older generation Qualcomm chip) is going to spell trouble just around the corner”.
And this statement from TMO worries me a lot:
“Many smartphones are increasingly powerful in their features and specifications without continuing to improve the main reason that so many people have mobile phones – the ability to communicate with each other,” said Andrew Sherrard, vice president of product development, T-Mobile USA. “The new myTouch 3G Slide is a smart and sleek phone that fits into your pocket, your budget and your family life with exclusive T-Mobile features that put communication with your closest family and friends front and center.”
Looks like TMO is convinced that we the customers do not need or want smartphones with increasingly powerful features and specifications. Hmm…, really? Brilliant plan for success: ignore reality and consciously choose to not compete. They must have missed the Droid sales numbers and the fact that Incredible is selling out. They probably also didn’t notice that the only high specced phone they released lately (HD2) kept selling out as well. Who’s running this company?

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

I noticed that too, but what I read was not a justification for the phone’s processor, but instead an explanation on why they make the phones that they do.

Think about it, do you really think that T-Mobile is incapable of ordering phones from HTC with the fastest processors, largest displays and most RAM? It’s not difficult at all to order phones when you are making $500 million net profit every quarter.

But T-Mobile is dedicated to giving its core customers what they want. And he said what they want, phones that are able to communicate in the manner that is currently popular (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)

You know why T-Mobile makes the money it does, because it caters to trends and sells add-on services, products other than talk (aka data).

Think about it. Right now the hottest thing is Facebook, Twitter and other social apps. What do T-Mobile customers want… an easy way to talk to their friends via Facebook, etc. This phone gives that to customers.

But guess what? If one wants to communicate in that fashion (e.g. get an update when a Facebook friend posts a photo on a page) the customer is going to have to subscribe to a T-Mobile data plan. And you know what else, these customers subscribe to data without blinking an eye.

The masses don’t need or want your power user’s phone. They want something like the Slide.

People want these phones because they are effective communication tools. People can use social interaction sites with ease, receive updates (with the phone “ringing” just as if a call came in), text, e-mail, shoot videos and post them to Facebook instantly, etc.

How critical is all this? It was just in the news that people prefer to communicate via social interaction services (data) rather than talking on the phone! This is the new way to communicate.

(By the way, yes the EVO is a hot phone for people like us. But I know many, many people who have seen my HD2 and have told me the phone is too big for their tastes. Many girls have said that since they put phones in the purse. There’s lots of people who would not want the EVO simply because the display is too big.)

There’s a reason why T-Mobile is not rushing out to market high-end super or smart phones. I suspect it has to do with selling what sells, but also because of the tanked economy.

I don’t think it’s because T-Mobile decision makers are incapable of ordering high spec’d phones or that T-Mobile employees are inept and incompetent. Remember how much money T-Mobile makes, they are doing something right.

What’s that saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

A lot of people in here say T-Mobile is doing lousy, the employees are stupid, all T-Mobile handsets suck, etc. However, T-Mobile’s numbers decimate what the naysayers post as truth.

      • ryan

Mike, do you remember when I said I wanted a faster android phone and you said I was the only one that felt this way? Do you think I’m the Engadget writer or do you realize you’re just an idiot.

“don’t think it’s because T-Mobile decision makers are incapable of ordering high spec’d phones or that T-Mobile employees are inept and incompetent. Remember how much money T-Mobile makes, they are doing something right.”

So just because someone is an executive at Tmobile means they can’t make mistakes? It’s nice to give credit to management but believe it or not, management is the reason plenty of companies fail. Tmobile USA makes money but posted meager growth last year and LOST MARKET SHARE IN 2009.

      • TC

I agree entirely with ItsMichaelnotMike. Tmobile knows what its doing and while the minority of Tmo power smartphone wannabe users keep complaining about Tmo products, TMo Just keeps making more and more profits.

My last 3 Tmo phones: Blackberry Pearl, G1, HD2.. I sent back the HD2 cuz the dam thing kept freezing up on me so I could give a fig about processing speed cuz even these dam powerphones freeze up (maybe it was due to the WinMo OS but still..). THe best phone I ever used was the g1 and it kicks ass. SO if the Slide is anything like that.. and itssupposed to be.. i’ll be going to the Slide on launch date and stickin with Tmo.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

Ryan… you’re the idiot. You just make up stuff and post it like you know what you are talking about. (And that’s not just me saying it, many people in here have called you a moron and troll.) While your posts have superficial appeal they breakdown upon closer examination, every time.

I don’t care what Engadget says about non-Apple products because they pretty much criticize anything that’s not Apple (that may change with Chen’s home being searched) or that does not have the latest and fastest processor, for example.

As for losing market share I am not sure what you mean since these were the numbers posted for last year:

      Q1 2009 – 415,000 new customers.

      Q2 2009 – 325,000 new customers.

      Q3 2009 – Decline 77,000 customers

      Q4 2009 – 371,000 new customers

Besides, as the saying goes, money talks, bullsheet walks. Sprint loses close to $1 billion in a quarter, T-Mobile has net profits of $500 million in quarters.

Instead of bullsheeting us, why don’t you post some evidence to support the nonsense you post.

      • Ryan

        Read their annual report:

Verizon and AT&T, in particular, achieved proportionately
higher net customer additions and increased their market share, which
combined with pressure from the regional unlimited wireless carriers
resulted in T-Mobile USA’s slight decline in market share in 2009.

That’s their words, not mine. Real words from Deutsche Telekom. Are you saying Deutsche Telekom doesn’t know what happened? I know you consider yourself an expert because you can use google, but do you really think you know more than the actual company and the person compiling the annual report? Really? Go google “hubris” before you google more tmobile stats.

      • 3Ggeek

oh my god michael shut the hell up already. you just cash anyone who does not agree with you or likes android.

      • mad dog

        3Ggeek you read my mind.

  • Ace

@GreenRobot……..The vast majority of T-Mo customer base are not interested in high end, they want cool. The HD2 sells because of the screen and Transformers. I know that sounds stupid but it is true. If they catered to the readers of this site, they would have nothing but a store full of $200 smartphones!!!! WE are not a large part of the 35 million. We are just the loudest. Also, the HD2 sells out and has a return rate of 30% because the low end user gets their heads turned in the store and when they get it home, they don’t know how to use it.
We need to carry all types of phones to fit all of our customers needs. The MyTouch line.like it or not, has been the most successful in recent memory based on sales, return rate, and satisfaction.

    • mikeeeee

      @ace.

if you have any juice with the mucky mucks in washington, give us a phone that will have wifi calling, interface with a bluetooth mini keyboard and be tethering capable.

    • LNG

Why can’t they make the exact same phone, but with a faster processor and more RAM? Why are they mutually exclusive? I don’t think anyone’s said a bad word about what this phone DOES have. It looks like a really great phone with a wonderful UI, especially for Android beginners, but probably also for Android pros. What they’re (we’re) complaining about is what it’s missing, which more power.

    • GreenRobot

      @Ace
You know, that is really a tired argument that some of tmonews readers continue to make over and over in order to defend T-Mobile’s apparent choice not to compete in high-end market. However at the same time that T-Mobile and you continue to make that argument, other big 3 providers are choosing to bring to market high end devices, to advertise them, and to sell them. And they make the news with those devices while T-Mobile has nothing to compete with them. As a result they are becoming invisible in the market and their subrscriber number are reflecting it. There is no question that devices like Evo4 and Droid Incredible are going to bring subscribers to Sprint and Verizon because they grab the news and are visible – they are the next big thing. Meanwhile some of those new subscribers going for these devices are going to be former T-Mobile subrscribers frustrated with lack of high end devices on their carrier. Meanwhile what will Slide achieve really – some current subscribers are going to upgrade because there is nothing better available. How is that a good business plan? Where did you Ace an where did T-Mobile executives get this idea that TMO subscribers don’t need or want high end devices? I just don’t think that this is true any longer if it ever was. I remember people complaining about lack of good phones on TMO years ago and it is still going on. Android and G1 were a breath of fresh air and some excitement for a moment and it sold well. Now TMO is choosing to let that success go by not pursuing it further while other providers are jumping on the band wagon and reaping the benefits. This is short sighted for T-Mobile to say the least.

  • DeeShock

I’m so FREAKIN on this phone but I’m so UNFREAKIN sure on what color to get. The WHITE phone is calling me, it looks clean and would show way less finger prints but I don’t know how long the it will be a popular color. My second option is of course is the BLACK phone will always be a popular color but also show an extremely amount of finger prints. Some1 please HELP ME..

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

Go with red. It looks good, is easy to find in a stack of junk, and it’s pleasing to the eye.

  • Jesse813

    This is not even close to compete with the HTC Evo coming out in June… i WILL be leaving T-Mobile for that phone, sorry T-Mobile but you are always one step behind with your phone line ups, and Sprint is always infor of you.. examples;

    G1-GSM Hero
    Mytouch>Htc Hero-Sprint
    Moto Cliq> The Droid
    Behold 2> Samsung Moment- Sprint
    Hd2> HTC Evo> Sprint

And now the Mytouch slide? WTF! The Evo kills of every Android phone in the

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

Huh? You think the Slide is meant to compete with the EVO? Sheesh…

The EVO is a first generation superphone, the Slide is a mid-tier smartphone.

The EVO is the best spec’d phone on the planet, for now. Go ahead and buy it. But since no one on the planet is comparing the Slide with the EVO you should not either.

Forget about T-Mobile. Leave, don’t look back, enjoy your EVO and quit talking smack about T-Mobile and the Slide.

      • ItsMichaelNotMike

Jesse… look at my posts. I have never said to anyone to stick it out with T-Mobile and not switch.

And while I would never switch carriers strictly for a phone it’s 110% acceptable for people to go with the carrier who has a phone they want. That’s precisely why carriers come out with hot phones, to attract new customers and get people to switch.

Phones are becoming the most important and pleasurable electronic device in one’s house. And with all the developments phones are actually fun to shop for, buy and use.

(For sure none of us are buying these things to be practical. I mean, a high quality netbook is $400. With tax I paid $500 for my HD2. That makes no sense, at least not financially. But I love using my HD2, so price does not matter.)

Personally I would never switch carriers because of a phone. This is because I know a few months down the road I will tire of the phone and there will always be something better than my current “love.” I have had my HD2 a little over a month and am already planning on selling it to get something else, maybe in the summer, maybe come the holiday season.

While I love the Evo (in concept) I would not switch to buy it, but I am envious of those who will be getting it. (Of course it does not help that I would not go back to Sprint even if they gave me a free Evo. LOL.)

    • davidohio

@jesse813 shut up already. Sprint blows. you will love their service.

      • Jesse813

        @davidohio

        Real Mature comeback.

        @itsmichaelnotmike

I can post my opinion and it stands as you said the Evo hands down has the best spec in the planet… so now tell me .. why am i suppose to stick with T-Mobile again?

  • JT

I would be surprised if this phone runs out stock like HD2. Probably never and will always have plenty in stock because only a few people will buy it. Wake up T-Mobile, need to do better, how many different slide phone are you going to put in your line up which are not selling?? G1, Cliq, Touchpro 2 and all others.

    • Matlock

Are you retarded or something!?!? the G1 didnt sell? Wow, where have you been living!? The G1 was a hit seller, if they hadnt stopped production on it, it would still be selling. I have people walk into my store every day asking for
      @ JT
the G1, and I have current G1 owners who have had accidents happen to their phones ask if they could just buy another one. The G1, as crappy as its specs are compared to the new phones, sold very well. So get your facts straight.

The TP2 didnt sell well because it was a WinMo phone and also because of its ridiculous price.

The Cliq has sold very well in my store, but I know that overall it didnt well!

This phone will sell extremely well, and Im sure T-mo will have enough stock for this phone. Its not like the HD2, which caught them off guard by being a top seller.

So before you start spitting out facts make sure you know what the hell your talking about.

  • ItsMichaelNotMike

Wow… thanks for the great pics and review.

I suspect my girlfriend will want to keep using a physical keyboard on a device since she has been using one on the Pearl, fully QWERTY on the Curve and now the G1.

So we will be getting this to replace her G1. As much as I like the Samsung Galaxy S, this Slide is sweet. And it has a larger display than the G1.

Guess now the decision will be which color she wants. The color choices are great. I like the red, but I will let her decide since she will be using it. I suspect she will go with white. (Good call T-Mobile, going with these color choices).

Thanks again for the pics. I will e-mail her those so she can pick the color.

Just thinking out loud: Since I will be getting this instead of the Galaxy S (for her) I will have to wait until the holidays to replace my HD2.

This is because I love my HD2, and the while I really like the specs of the SGS, I’d rather wait for the new superphones debuting in August-November.

Some “holiday phones” will have the new Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon/Scorpion processor, true 1080p HD encoding/decoding, a “dedicated graphics card,” and a mini HDMI port (take that TVOut).

My want list on a 2010 holiday superphone includes a built-in Type D mini HDMI port (which is smaller than a microUSB port!), 1080p HD recording/playback and dedicated (not shared) graphics. And of course a 4″ or larger display. After the HD2 I can’t go back to a display much smaller than 4 inches.

    • sorandkairi

      that’s my dream phone!

      • UzukiC

I don’t suspect miniHDMI will start replacing microUSB anytime soon, due to the universalizing standard on chargers, but I could see both of them used on the same device.

I guess that the thing that really gets me for smartphone users is that 90% of people will not find value or use for 1080p recording, and that playback will not be important on a device only 4 inches in size. Sure, people will want it in order to say that they have the latest and greatest, but will most people who have a smartphone of that caliber really take the time to connect the output to their TV all the time? A small group might (I suspect those who are very serious bloggers or recorders of life events, and even then, if they’re big into it, they’ll likely just upload the video onto their computer). There comes a point where the vast majority of customers will not need a better device to fulfill their mobile computing needs – in fact, my HD2 fills all of my needs for both a smartphone and almost everything I need in a netbook (minus an opportunity to connect to a large physical keyboard and a programming sandbox or two), and even netbooks are a niche market.

I’ll completely hold my tongue when high-caliber game developers start using mobile media more seriously (in this perspective, the claimed specs on the Galaxy S are getting me excited), but where we are today, we need to discover new software needs and utilizations before smartphones can maximize the benefit from their current hardware specs… People don’t need a bodybuilder for a phone, but a reliable, hard worker that does the important tasks.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

The mini HDMI will not replace the microUSB port, I only mentioned it so that people could conceptualize the size of a mini HDMI connector (otherwise some people might assume that the HDMI port on a phone might be the same size as those on LCD TVs, for example.

As for 1080p encoding/decoding, as you know devices like the Flip MINO HD and Kodak HD camcorders, the move is to full HD functionality, so it’s not that big a deal to include it on mobile devices.

Personally, I need it because I use it for presentations in class. I used TVOut on my Touch Pro2 and it was great.

Also, the move is going to people having a mobile device as the ONLY high speed internet connection in the house. In other words, broadband, cable TV, DSL, etc. will go the way of the pay phone, extinct.

I predict that people will have an all-in-one superphone that they connect to a dock at home and that feeds a signal to LCD TVs, computers, etc. People will stream Netflix movies from the phone and project them on 42″ LCD flat panels.

So this holiday’s superphones is a start of that migration.

  • Noel

This is for u MAGENTA…We at TMO(the phone geeks etc) need a SUPER ANDROID device made by HTC to rival the Evo. Tmo was the first to take a chance w/ the Android OS for almost a year b4 all these other carriers came on board..so how come Tmo doesn’t have the baddest Android device out there? The EVO should have been on Magenta not sprint. Well MAGENTA time to redeem thy self…if not in the works get the ball rolling for the next SUPER ANDROID PHONE..the HD3 w/ a 1.5 or 2 snap dragon processor, 1Gig Rom, 1Gig Ram, 8 to 10meg cam w/ dual led flash, 4.0 inch super Amoled screen(max perfect size), 1800mAh batt or higher, voice/text input, noise cancellation mic, abt 64 to 96gb hard drive w/ expandable micro SD slot, dobly surround sound speakers, switchable 3 to 4G, Wifi, Blutooth a/b/g/n, HDMI out port, HD video recording, to fit all that in this device a lil thickness of abt 13 to 15mm acceptable. Ofcz..Sense UI and all the Goodies HTC can envission..IT IS DOABLE, SO HTC/TMO GET IT DONE.

    • UzukiC

You should get into the phone development business, because it sounds like you have some really great ambitions and seem to know what it takes to get it done. Be the guy who helps make it happen!

And that phone subsidzied would be close to $400, and over $1000 at full price! Think of all the stuff you people are asking for, and how you would be the first ones to start crying about how expensive that phone is!! I wish I could have a phone thats as powerful as my laptop, but I know thats not going to happen for a while, because it would be too expensive to purchase a phone like that even at the subsidized price!!

  • alex

Awesome phone got a CLIQ XT hope this puns comes out without a kyboard like the cliq xt I dnt do keyboards anymore lol please come out without a kyboard, with better specs

  • KJC

I cant wait for this phone!!! when i saw the first little blurb about it way back in novemeber i was so excited! I have the HD2 and im just tired of how slow it is. plus i wanna give andriod another shot. :)

  • Dave

but only 600 mhz?? come on… all these other companies are coming out with 1 Ghz snapdragon processor and this new samsung phone that might come out with t-mobile called “galaxy s” has 1 ghz processor that’s 3 times faster and better triangle pixel than snapdragon…… come on~~

  • eYe

I may still get this, if XDA finds a way to root it and get rid of all of that bloatware. I hate how Tmo took perfect Sense overlay and morphed it into an ugly creature it is on this phone. I am pretty sceptical of the 512MB RAM spec though, I can almost bet it’s actually 256, 512 is reserved for really high-end phones and this one is clearly not it. I do suspect it would run quite nicely with vanilla 2.1 and some CM goodies.
I do wish T-mo would pick up at least one high-end Android phone from HTC. Anything like N1 or Desire or HD2 would make me really happy.

  • Moe

Looks like a Toy,something I would give my 2yr old!

  • Dude

    ^^

The mytouch v1.2 has 288 mb of ram,
so this should have at least that.

My bet at would at least match legend at 384, which makes me think 512 might be right.
Also because resolution is only HVGA, no big benefit for snap dragon. Cheaper to include a bunch of ram to boost performance.

    • J-Hop2o6

      i read the mT-Slide has 512MB

  • Dude

Also I hope there is a way to disable the bubbles. I prefer the icons from android 2.0 standard.

    • J-Hop2o6

i hope so also.. but thats “if” i even get this phone.. imma wait til Q4 to see what the selection of phones will be.

  • chris

Why is everyone saying this does not have ENOUGH horse power? 1st of all, it is running ANDROID 2.1, and to go with that, it is running HTC SENSE. This is a powerful phone no doubt. Everyone is all caught up in this snapdragon mess(including me lol) but this is an awesome phone for the not so ‘technical’ type of person. The only thing I see wrong this phone, is dropping it in june when we all know that over rated/hyped IPHONE will drop in june as well. I will be getting this for my wife, unless i change my mind and get her a NEXUS ONE by mother day.

BTW, I got a nexus one, and it is the best phone ever.

  • Reece

Again, it’s gonna be a damn good phone. It’s a HTC Legend with a keyboard so it’ll be pretty dope for the mid-range.

However, some of us have aspirations for a high end android device – and these phones do NOT address that. For those that like to throw out the N1 and HD2 as highend offerings the N1 simply is a no-go for those needing to stay w/their current plan while the HD2 is a lameduck OS.

Again good for folks who’ll get a capable device with keyboard. But folks like me who are growing envious of the Evo & Incredible and Desire which is going to other carriers not named T-Mobile it is a thing of “that’s good… aaaaaand?”

  • Tinalooks808

Ugh traded in my G1 for a bb9700 and kinda wishing I waited for this :(… sure there will be some other great android offerings when I am ready to go back!

  • SEFan (still!)

Encouraging that the first reviews seem pretty positive. T-Mo has done some interesting things with connect features. To me this sounds less annoying than Moto Blur while retaining some of the connectedness. This voice-recogition thing – sounds like a cool way to “write” an e-mail or text message. ‘Course this overlay will result in the same slow OS upgrades that MotoBlur suffers, but maybe 2.1 is good enough to not NEED a major upgrade for a while. And when was the last time you saw this many reviewers agree that they like the keyboard!

With this device T-Mobile seems to be working really hard to move people from voice alone into the data, messaging, the web, apps… the smartphone zone, and this time they may actually have thought it through. This has the potential to be a decent mid-range phone (especially if 3G reception is solid!), and I hope it does well. Not for me though. I want the fast processor, the big screen, the full experience. That leaves me with the HD2 (scary!), the Nexus 1 (scary!!), or nowhere I guess. Any other ideas?

  • Jazz

It’s great. For a mid range phone. If I got it, I’m sure I’d be happy with it. But I don’t want a mid range phone, I want a super android phone, but those don’t seem to be coming to Tmobile. Every other carrier, even US Cell, is getting at least 1 Android Super phone. Every one except Tmobile. So very soon I’ll be forced to make a decision. Stick with tmobile, a phone company I’ve been with for the last 8 years. Or go to one that has the phone I want.

  • Dude

Wait for hspa+ enabled superphones which will come out in the fall I’m sure. Scorpions!! And I bet the nexus two would be released in stores through t-mobile.

  • http://tmonews.com Cheech

@tinalooks808: Don’t worry about that trade up to the 9700! I just did the same thing from and HD2 and it’s like a breath of freash air to have the best keyboard in the bizz and a phone that does’nt freeze including baterry pulls 4x a day.
Also tina, if you look at the specs that all of these/us nerds are overlooking? Although the Slide isn’t even out yet, it’s already out dated!!! The 9700 is still a more powerfull phone! It has a better processor and better screen resoltuion (although smaller). The 9700 works incredibly including the uma calling @HOME. Love that feature and overall just exudes class! Realy look at these specs guy’s? Sadly the slide is just a mid-range phone and is going to take the new iPhone or SGS for me to switch from the 9700. Tried theme all and since android is all the craze, it;s sad that the 9700 get’s overlooked as their best phone! Why do you think everyone that works for T-Mobile uses one?

    • J

There isn’t one person at my work location that owns a 9700.

  • http://tmonews.com GusGus

    Looks pretty cool…

I currently have the Hd2 and waiting to see if someone comes out with an android rom for it…

i think android is a little bit better than winmo at this moment.

  • mad dog

We get the isuck slide while cellular south just announced that they’re getting the droid. Way to go tmo.

  • Scottie

I think the slide will do very well! Granted, i want a super phone with all my dream specs. But when i am speaking with magenta customers, they want mid-tier and feature phones. you know what sprint and Verizons big sellers are? Feature phones. The Lg chocolate touch and other messaging/multimedia phones. Phones in fun colors and eye catching designs that meet communication needs. only tech junkies ( Read: tmonews readers) care about HDMI output and screen type. as long as it looks good, turns heads and works; people fall over themselves to get it. Telling my friends it has a HOT amoled screen gets stares. Telling them it has FB notifications and one app for all social networks? ” ohhhhhh i want one!”

  • JBLmobileG1

I wouldn’t mind getting this phone so long as it can and will support Android 2.2 when its released. I must have apps 2 sd which I heard Android 2.2 will have. Hopefully if it does get it it’ll be powerful enough to handle it without slowing the hardware down

  • J

Now that I have Swype, I never need a keyboard again. It only slows me down.

  • tortionist

Amen to that J. Swype rocks. The BB 9700 isn’t all that, since it doesn’t have swype and isn’t customizable like Android phones. If the new MTSlide has swype i’ll consider it. I’ll never go back from swype.

  • TC

I have a g1 but its been thru hell and back so I will ordering a Slide when it comes out in June. I want the phone for the reasons it works well: social media communication, texting, internet, tweets..

The high end stuff can wait till 2011..

  • Dude

    Check this out

Hopefully this isn’t their advertising campaign.

    • Cody

Damn, I regret getting the Mytouch 1.2 now, I love physical keyboards and Sense UI.

  • luffyd

Wow this is a great phone guys…5mp with flash,512ROM/RAM and a 600Mhz processor..this phone will sell like hotcakes! The new ones will jump on these ones..true Snapdragon phones are nice but look at the specs it has more than what a midrange phone is capable of doing..tacked that on with the Expresso Sense UI!

  • T.P.

Here’s my problem with T-Mobile, they want to now charge premium prices for data and other plans but provide mid range devices and sells them for premium price. You get whàt you pay for, and they haven’t grasped that if they provide the best, we will pay for it!!

    • Mark

Premium prices? The reason I’ve stayed w/ T-Mo for so long is that they’re cheap. Only Sprint is slightly cheaper among the big 4, AT&T and Verizon charge significantly more.

I’m certainly not complaining about my $59/month for unlimited Data/Text + 500 Anytime.

      • Tpavey

Stop quoting old prices that you cannot get anymore.

500minutes + Data + Text costs $79 per month. You can save a little money by not signing a contract but the amount subsidized on a smart phone more than makes up for the cost difference.

T-mobile USED TO have the best prices. Sprint has the best now.

Once you start talking multiple lines with data they are really not much better than ATT or verizon because the per line cost for data is the same. Sprint on the other hand is $20 for an extra line with data instead of the $35-40 from the other carriers.

    • J.

You must paying $120.00 plus taxes at either AT&T or Verizon!!

    • tomato

uh? Premium prices? NOT!!! They’re actually the most competitive when it comes to plans, pricing and the only ones – as far as I know – of the big 4 in the US allowing you to purchase phone plans without a contract right now.
