Official MyTouch 3G Announcement

I know we have been patiently awaiting the official announcement of the MyTouch 3G, and guess what, its here!  T-mobile has launched a website full of all sorts of fun facts to help launch this device.  The MyTouch 3g will carry a 3.2 inch (480 x 320) touchscreen, WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel camera, exchange support, Android 1.5 (how else would you expect to type?) and of course Tmobile 3G (quadband EDGE for roaming is also in there, in case you were wondering).  The site is also counting down to the July 8th presale date (only an agonizingly long 16 days away).  The posted pictures give a great look at the three color choices that are available (white, merlot and black).  Engadget is also reporting that the preorders will ship in late July, with national availablity in early August.  They are also reporting that it will set you back $199.99 with a two-year contract.  Who else can’t wait for this Android phone?  Show your appreciation in the comments (and try out that nifty reply button while you are at it).

Hmmm.. now i’m very comtemplative. I don’t know if I want to get it or not, cause I was set on my Sidekick LX 2009, since I love Sidekicks’ and they work well for my uses/purposes.

  • branon

Exchange Support? You mean we wont need to purchase third party software???

  • Andrew

$199 for ALL T-Mobile customers or only those within a certain length left on their contracts?

  • TJ

Don’t get me wrong, I am pleased… But I thought the camera was 5mp?
Does Anyone know what the phone will cost without a 2 yr contract? I’m month to month with Tmobile…

  • TJ

Also re: the plan… Will it be like the G1? I have the unl loyalty (60$/mo) + unl text and web (35$/mo) = 95$/mo… That beats the iphone for sure!

  • cDAWG

oh and what the hell happen to the 5 mp camera and exchange???

  • frost

my guess 500 for full price

  • Dave

    I’ve decided I want one, =D

  • ManoloDF

What is going on with the UMA/Hotspot@Home ?? This was reported at first when it passed the FCC that it had WiFi with UMA, and now it is not mentioned on the Box Art, or on the myTouch 3G website or any of the recent postings. If they do not have Hotspot@home/UMA on this, I will consider jumping ship, I’ve had enough without a 3g + UMA device.

  • Rhage

Folks, what am I missing? Did TMO keep us waiting all this while only to release a phone with essentially the same hardware specs as the HTC Magic that was released in Europe months ago?

  • turbotim21

So pre-sales in 16 days, how about delivery dates? Anyone know? No 5mPix cam, but at least it comes with the 288M of RAM right?

  • Gryde97

Why oh why!!!??? Why is T-mobile not striking while the iron is hot and selling this phone next week. This is crazy that they are going to begin shipping this phone in LATE JULY. Sure give IPHONE and PALM PRE all the time in the world to steal millions of subscribers who are tired of waiting for T-mobile to get their act together. This is soooo the “NINTENDO” approach to advertising. Let’s come out with a new innovative gadget but lets wait A MONTH AND A HALF to bring it out, so people are really feenin’ for it. HELLO if any T-Mobile CEO’s are paying attention to any of these blogs people are screaming for the phone NOW because they dont want to betray “ANDROID” and move to the Wack IPHONE! I dont want go to the DARKSIDE, I need ANDROID IN MY LIFE!

  • TaTo22

  • terrell

ahh man about time I need a new phone I got this wack samsung behold an this would be my upgrade

  • freeQwnC

OMFG finally!!!! I love it. Doesn’t it look a little different then the HTC Magic? idk maybe thats just me.. anyway i hope the internet plan is not required please.. cause thats the only reason i couldnt get a G1! plus i think the G1’s Damm Ugly!

This is actually the phone T-Mobile should have introduced as their first Android phone instead of the hunk of plastic called the G1. This is still a hunk of plastic…just shinier. I do like the look but I’m not sure it’ll be the phone that draws people end if those specs aren’t up to par. What’s the deal with these small SD cards being sold with them? 4GB? The 16GB iPhone is $199 and that’s built in. And if the other specs are as disappointing I don’t think it’ll be the phone to attract any new customers. Good for current subscribers maybe…not good for growth in new accounts.

    Good luck with that T-Mo.

  • Say-Low

Ok, so about the pre-sale.. Do we need to speak with T-mo Rep or can we just do it online? Thanks!

Also, would we be required to buy the data plan or can I just keep my current plan? o.O

Doesn’t matter what other say.. I know alot of you out there will probably get it too. LOL =P

  • Jay

Wow I was really looking forward to the 5 megapixel camera but I guess that isn’t going to happen. Don’t get me wrong I think Android is great and I like this way more than the iPhone, but what makes this phone so special when compared to the G1 after the OTA?

  • Pete

So I have been doing digging and digging not knowing what to believe I’ve had my Motorola Rizr Z3 for 2 years and I was just about to get the Iphone 3GS because I couldn’t wait any longer and not know anything. But it’s here! I can’t wait. I’m sticking with T-Mobile.

  • D

    Merlot! Merlot!

  • DrGUM

So sorry TMO, this is just WAY too little WAY WAY WAY too late! Looks like my VoiceStream SIM will finally be put to rest. Yup, TMO is losing yet another customer (I’ve been with them since before they even existed) to the iPhone. Way to drop the ball in this one TMO!

  • BubbaJo

Any thoughts from our insiders around here on whether or not a data plan will be required? I have virtually no need for one with free wifi where I spend most of my time (home and work). I WANT this phone, but will have to go with one of the new unlocked Nokia phones if the mytouch required a data plan just as the G1 does.

  • benjamin

For some reason I am disappointed. I was expecting something that would blow me away… but I guess I was wrong! time to get me an iphone!

  • Remnique

Do you need to get the internet for the phone to work and also I am not a big fan of google services (don’t want my info kept on any ones server except my own) so I was wondering is there a way to disable them or better yet uninstall them and still use the phone?

  • Sanjay Kumar

To all that are saying they are leaving. Don’t go. T-mobile will be releasing more phones in 2010. Some of them may even be 3g of which some may be smartphones. Also, their 3g network will be available to everyone by 2012. Its all about anticipation.

  • monacelli

I’m sure they will try to require the $25 smart phone plan or whatever. Although I love Android I will have to stick with my iPhone if I can’t use my grandfathered $5.99 tzones plan with it.

  • poochie

Looks Like Another piece of crap their gonna try to get me to buy for 500 smackaroos. We’ll guess what T-Mobile NO SALE!

  • Ash

I’m soo glad its finally official!! I just wish I would be able to have it in my hands before I leave for vacation july 29th!!! @ least its official for all of us who waited all this time! Just wish it was sooner!! Ughh

  • Jonessoda87

Wow, they really dissappointed me on this one. Only thing that will save my service with tmobile will be the TP2. If not then I will have to cross over to the darkside.

  • hv

yes the data plan will be required. this phone is useless without it so it’s no different than before. and to anyone thinking they can use the wifi without the data plan, it doesn’t work that way. the wifi gives you wireless broadband speeds, but no actual data service. just boosts your data speed. anyone jumping to iphone might want to do a feature check before you do…considering the iphone just got mms capabilities last week, along with stereo bluetooth and landscape keyboard. the g1 (and mytouch) have had that for quite sometime. pair it with open source, FREE (not paid like iphone) Over The Air software updates, and a huge amount of free apps (apps you’d actually want), it hardly seems worth it. so if you want to go buy an inferior product for more money and spend more on your data plan AND have the slowest 3g service on the market AND lame customer service…go ahead. i think i’ll stay.

  • TechJunkie

I was really hoping for UMA. Therefore, no UMA is a dealbreaker for me. I already have the G1, so, the upgrade value just isn’t there. Very nice design (this is what they should have released in the first place), but they need to step up the game to compete with other companies. This just isn’t cutting it right now.

Anyone know the deal with the lacking UMA—why would they not want to include this?

  • Amanda

disappointed there is no 5mp camera. Tmo should reduce the g1 to $99 and sell this one for $149. would definitely bring in more customers.

  • Rcommander

This is BS Tmo, yet again, doesn’t include its flagship UMA service (the only thing actually unique to Tmobile) in its flagship device! and 3g and uma can’t really create a problem because when UMA works, wi-fi is on, therefore 3G is off! Why do they love axing their own foot is beyond me.

  • Mauro

$200 for 2 year contract?? FAIL! this new android device is pretty much the same as the G1. I mean no 5 mp camera? I like tmobile and their cs is awesome but seriously their phone selection is a joke. It looks like att will get a new customer this summer but I’m still thinking about the price of the data plan for 2 years. Grrrr any ideas on when the galaxy/i7500 comes out???

  • Tremor

I love how everyone automatically assumes it is T-mobile’s fault for not releasing the phone right away. Perhaps it was due to HTC’s production schedule. Anyway, I like the look of this phone, but if it doesn’t have a 3.5mm head phone jack, I will probably wait for another phone from T-mobile. They still have a number of Android Phones that are mid/higher end coming out that I know about(i7500/Galaxy, Hero, Moto Morison, Samsung Bigfoot (may not be an android phone), and the Huawei U8230).

  • JonnyBrazil

i do not know why people are whining! It’s not like this is the only phone T-Mobile is gonna release. There is still the TP2 and a whole bunch of other phones expected to release. WOW no 5mp camera, be happy there even is a camera, sheesh! As for the data plan, so what if it requires one, the iPhone needs a way more expensive data plan anyway. I personally think that the so called iPhone is boring and no different than my iPod Touch, the only difference is that it’s a phone! The Palm Pre doesn’t attract me much either, i have to admit that it is a cool phone but come on i’m not gonna jump of a bridge for it. The people who are threatening to leave, i say “bye bye”. I personally will stick with T-Mobile because i know that things will get better. 3G is expanding so just chill and wait. Signal strength is getting better and also is expanding. The phones, you have to admit, are improving and will improve. Yes my town was like one of the first to get 3G(Elizabeth, NJ) but it WILL get to other areas. If you want to leave go, we are not gonna beg and argue with you to stay, as for the people staying i say “things will get better”, just stick it out.

  • jrperiod

How does the 2 year commitment work for g1 owners. I ask because as far as I can remember we all had 2 sign up for 2 years to get the G1. So to upgrade we would have to pretty much be given a waiver of some sort.

  • Seth

$199?!??!?! That’s a freaking joke T-Mobile! I sat on the phone with T-mobile one night talking about the fact that the G1’s hardware is outdated and that they need to have more memory and the guy continually bashed the iPhone for not having a keyboard and telling me how much the iPhone sucks because you have to type on the screen. Now they have a pure touch screen device with a smaller screen than the iPhone. And trying to sell the idea that the G1 has “unlimited” memory.

TMO has some serious issues with quality of phone selection. I enjoy my service and my rate plan, but $199 for this phone is too much. Until Android supports apps on SD cards or the i7500 comes out (and hopefully is as good as it looks..on paper at least) I am left sitting here hoping that the Apple and AT&T go through an ugly break up.

  • Mac

Wow>>>>>I cant wait! I’m going to buy two of them! I currently have the G1 but getting this one would be well worth it. Anyone want to buy a G1

  • uknowme…

I’ll agree, I am disappointed with the camera not being a 5MP camera and no UMA support but besides that… i can live with the other specs.

i know i said i wouldn’t get this phone but it actually looks pretty sexy to me. might reconsider.

  • timmyjoe42

    No UMA = No BUY.

I don’t see the deal with the battery life being an issue. UMA doesn’t eat up my Pearl battery. If 3G is a battery hog, it shouldn’t matter when it is on UMA, because then it’s not using the 3G.

I’m hoping that it’s just that UMA isn’t one of HTC’s strengths, and when the 3G blackberry is introduced it will have UMA.

  • Aaron H

Looks great. T-mobile has done a good job on ramping up the hype for this phone and even the Mytouch name fits I think perfectly within their catalog of phones. This is what the G1 should have been and I believe when the Android 2.0 update hits (Donut) that it will be Google’s march on towards truly rivaling the iPhone for the first time in it’s 5 year life span.

    Great job Tmo! :)

  • Jeff

Glad its out. Just one step closer to the Samsung I7500 release.

  • Gryde97

As hard as it is I will continue to be patient T-mobile. I am going to resist my urge to go to the Darkside/Skynet/Treadstone/APPLE, even though I have been trying to decide what phone to purchase for the past 10 months. For the Record I have been with AT&T for like 8 years and I havent been under contract for 3 years so you see why my temptation is growing for this phone. I bought my wife the G1 and the phone runs perfectly fine, in my area the 3G signal through T-mobile is almost as fast as my cable internet connection at home. Android is definitely what I want I just dont want to have to wait to preorder the phone and the WAIT for the actual launch date, THEN WAIT FOR IT TO BE SENT TO ME.

  • Snake

I think that am going to hang up my 8900 for a little bit. For I now set my eyes on a new toy…I mean phone.

  • droid

Ok folks, WTF? Seriously. It’s the HTC Magic, same thing, same phone same hardware, a clone, the same. No surprise. It does boast Exchange support which was a farily big detraction on the G1. The specs for this thing have been out for quite some time now, why the surprise? Because a rumor said it would have UMA and a 5MP camera? T-Mobile never said it would have either of those things so you’re getting upset and mad at T-Mobile becuase the “interwebs” said it would have something that the HTC Magic was already confirmed not to have? ROTFGLOL.

If you can’t wait to buy one there’s this magic little place called e-Bay where you can give it money and it will give you, through the mail, an unlocked HTC Magic. Of course you won’t get Sherpa or the “myTouch 3G” branding or the ability to buy the 2yr warranty or insurance but you could have the same phone, for all intents and purposes, tomorrow. And it’d still be cheaper than the iPhone with no contract ($699 folks, Six Hundred and Ninety Nine dollars).

As for price there won’t be any love for recently upgraded/renewed peeps. We’re going to have to buy at full price. I just got off the phone with a TMO rep and they don’t know the full price yet. This, in my opinion, is just dumbfounding. “Hey folks we got this cool new phone to buy, but, yeah … uh we don’t know how much it’ll cost you and we’re going to make you wait to give us money and your name to PREorder this thing.”

These two little things are worthy of complaint/note because there is no basis in logic or reality for these. How does a multi-million dollar, multi-national corporation not know what it’ll cost full price for one of it’s product. It has to know the full price to determine the discounted price! And, why do we have to *wait* to preorder. The definition of preordering is ordering said item before it’s available.

pre: applied freely as a prefix, with the meanings “prior to,” “in advance of,” “early,” “beforehand,” “before,” “in front of,”

As for the delay in shipping TMO is tarining its store personel on the phone. Ok it could have been done earlier but at least it’s a semi plausible reason.

All in all this is what it is, the G1 was really more of a proof of concept, this is the real “first” Android device for TMO. It’s not that much of a step up from the G1 but it wasn’t supposed to be. It’s the mainstream Android device for TMO.

No use in getting upset that it doesn’t have groundbreaking features as it wasn;t intended to be another “tech savy” phone it’s the “Android for the masses phone.”

I like it. I’ll buy one because frankly my BlackBerry (8900) pails in comparison. I like TMO coverage and service, I fly for a living, I’m literally back and forth across the country multiple times a day and I’ve never had a problem with TMO coverage/roaming even in Canada (although it is pricey up there). I got my wife a G1 and have been playing with it and the 3G in Phoenix is fast and reliable, so is it in Minneapolis.

This phone is exaclty what people (reviers) wanted, a G1 with a sleeker form factor and no keyboard and exchange support. Don’t be surprised that TMO delivered exactly that.

  • david rosen

Can someone explain to me what exactly is better about this phone other than cosmetic changes when compared to the g1? It looks to me like a g1 without a keyboard aka a downgrade. Maybe if they gave this one more internal memory for apps without having to use hacks to get around the small internal app space, it would be worth the upgrade but otherwise I’m happy with my 2week old g1 and will be for a long while… especially if this is tmobiles idea of an “up”grade.

  • TaTo22

i never seen so much hate and ppl crying bout they are going to leave tmobile wellllllllll bye bye then lets see if u are going to get anything like what u get here go pay alot more money for a cheaper phone and a plan that u gona pay alot more then what u pay now if u gona talk crap go to at&t and talk that shit

  • joe

Using it now. Web is kinda slow. Doesnt have exchange thou! Its really small compared to the g1!

  • http://none billy v
