Seriously, I don’t understand why so many people think this phone is the ugliest phone they’ve ever seen. It’s not an iPhone (cosmetically speaking), but I don’t see it as being ugly. I don’t get it.

I was really hoping for a better looking phone. :-( (

I can’t show this thing off to my friends that have an iphone, they would laugh at me.

I’m so disappointed with the overall appearance of the product. What the **** happened to the touch screen and

those “fierce” features? This is not the iphone killer in any way.. HTC needs to go back to the drawing board and give me something FEROSH.

I think I’ll wait for that samsung “taco” haaa or Tocco whatever….

Umm, what’s with all of the suprise? Don’t get me wrong, I’m as happy as anyone to see an actual photo of my next phone, but it looks exactly as it does in the sketched and photoshopped versions we’ve all seen. Abd not to mention the “Darth Vader” video.

And @ Guillen, uhh, the touch screen is sitting right in front of you, big as day.
And if your willing to pay 200-350 dollars for something to “show to your friends”, then mayb your better off with the Tocco or whatever its called.

While I dont think this is not going to win any beauty contest I hope it make up in functionality. Similar to the Google website. Not the prettiest page out there but it does its job very well.

I am a current curve user (ok, ok abuser) and while my device is not as sexy as an iphone it sure is much faster. I hope the G1 will follow along that line.

And lmao @ Guillenx ” I can’t show this thing off to my friends that have an iphone, they would laugh at me.” After they laugh show them the iris password on ur phone or the barcode scanner. haha or even MMS.

This phone is far from ugly. It looks nice as hell matter of fact. And this phone is not meant to be a fashion statement first, its all about android OS. So, if you’re not looking for functionality over beauty, look elsewhere. But, if you can settle for nice looking phone instead of sexy phone, but with the best OS in the WORLD, here is your Mrs. RIGHT!!

i’m a little dissappointed with the look of this phone. i mean if you put it side by side with the rest of htc’s line up this thing looks straight hideous. Not to mention the design and positioning of the qwerty looks wrong. theres more space on the right side then the left. doesnt this seem like its going to be awkward to text. the quality of this phone looks like a sidekick. the buttons look cartoonish at best. wheres the matte black. Please save us matte black. hopefully this is still the testing phone they used while working on android and htc has some insanely sexxxxy phone that has johnny cash’s swagger and a little bit kate beckinsales striking beauty!

My current thoughts on the G1 are this:

It is kind of like your kid sister, you get excited at the thought of having one and then she comes along, and as is the case with all new-born babies, she is ugly. She grows on you though and befpre you know it all your friends want a piece. So sure this thing might not be as cosmetically refined as the iPhone, but looks aren’t what we are after, we want to have something that “just works”, something another product promised but fell a little short on.

  21. Jeff C says:

A general question to everyone who thinks this phone looks terrible – what would be your improvements?

I personally think it looks fine and I can’t see anything that would really improve the design except to change the big-*** “MENU” on the menu button to an icon like the other four.

Not too thrilled with the “trackball” thing but it looks more like a sensor for a fingertip than an actual moving ball. I’m concerned about finger oil and pocket lint gunking it up… had to throw away an Apple Mighty Mouse because the scroll ball got filled with crud. After 3 complete disassembles of the mouse and scroll ball sensor, I just got fed up with the amount of work required to maintain a mouse and threw it in the bin.

  22. unrulywizdom says:

    @ShotWithAnSLR
    Nice analogy lol

Anyway, I agree that it looks sort of like a toy compared to the likes of what HTC has put out lately, but I wouldn’t call it ugly. I admit that my first thought was that HTC did not spend nearly the same amount of resources as it did on their latest handsets. But that thought quickly left my mind.

Let me say this, though: I love the Diamond and Touch Pro, however, if anyone tries to compare the Dream to any of those, they’d be missing the point. As much as I would like to see a refined, super ******* sexy, dope, beautiful, shiny iPhone trouncing phone (on the best carrier, T-mobile :) ), the focus is on Android and the possibilities that it brings.

And, yeah, the Black one would be much better looking.

    [Reply]

  23. just me says:

@JEFF…I really do believe that is a finger sensor instead of a trackball….Blackberry is known for the trackball not HTC……..And from what i have seen from the pics i would have noticed a trackball by now so my thinking is a finger sensor

  24. AVonGauss says:

If this is the real phone, it would have been nice if they would have taken a picture of the system information screen, showing for instance, RAM?

  25. Jeff C says:

just me: HTC had one phone with a trackball, the P3300 with the RollR.

    http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/image/htc/love/pics/pic10.jpg

The RollR is definitely a ball but most photos face on have it looking flat.

    http://www.elmasbarato.com.es/pub/images/htc_p3300.jpg

So I dunno, but we’ll see at some point soon… I’m just trying to not let the fanboyism completely turn me off to this phone. It’s like the antichrist version of the Jesus Phone. If the OS is unusable, it’s going to suck no matter how hyped it is by either HTC, Tmobile, the user community, or, mephistopholies himself.

REALLY!!? i thought it was confirmed that HTC wasn’t gonna release a AWS version.. by one of the pics, it looks like the Touch Diamond/MDA Compact (aka non-keyboard).. I want the Touch Pro/MDA Vario (aka w/ keyboard)

but yea, im not getting the G1.. maybe the G2 later.. i juss want customers to give their feedback first.. and plus its not that attractive

I love all the punks who complain about how they don’t like this phone because they can’t show it off to their iPhone-using friends. You know what? Be like your friends and get an iPhone! That’ll be one less person for me to contend with for the pre-sale supply.

the real question that I am sure everyone wants an answer to is:

Does this phone come with that amazing leopard print back drops? That alone must be worth $300 large.

When will we see pictures with better lighting, more detail, a novel idea would be a video of this unit in action.

My experience with HTC has been pretty positive, minus faulty batteries, but at least we can replace our own batteries. Google also has yet to let me down, plus I never stop being amazed with what “We the People” can create for apps.

  41. Chairman Mao says:

Overall, I think it is a decent looking phone. I am looking for a phone that is functional first, and a fashion statement second. So I am definitely stoked for this phone. Having said that, just some minor cosmetic changes would make this a better looking phone:

    1. eliminate the beveling between the bottom of the screen and the top of the chassis housing the buttons. That way, when the screen is closed, the phone would look like one “solid” unit, as opposed to “added on” look the button house currently has right now, and all you would see is a small thin line where the screen

    2. make the buttons larger. they seem comically small for the amount of space that surrounds them, and it would have been nice to have the whole button light up, as opposed to just an icon in the middle of the button.

    Just some thoughts….

in an earlier post you said if your not “close” to a 3G network the presale price doesnt apply. how close is close, kansas city is on the list of cities & im in wichita, kansas.

The more I see and read about this phone the more I’m likely to pass. The design is terrible, the phone is a brick at 5.6oz and some key features seem to be lacking. I ask myself to do I really want to be an early adapter .. probably not. But I won’t make a final choice till I actually see the final product. Meanwhile I am also waiting for the Samsung 919 or whatever it will be called. I’m really interested in how that will compare to G1

@dave for me i like this phone vs the t919 because browsing the interenet is different on the t919 from what i saw its kind of stacked browsing and doesnt look like the actual website and this phone its the actual site and the keyboard
