Android may be here sooner then we think

500px-android-logosvg

We’re hearing rumor after rumor that Android has been delayed, and pushed back to 2009. Well TmoNews is jumping into the pool or rumors, calling BS on those other rumors, and putting in our vote of confidence on a presale of the Android phone on September 16th, 2008. This information, coming from a trusted source, prices the Android phone, also known as the G1 (Codename or real name, we’re not sure) at $399.

Full invoice that is.

Scare you? Good, well during the presale of the G1, T-mobile customers can pick up the phone for $150. This is where it gets interesting, we’re not seeing any prices for new activations during the presale, so this could mean that only current T-mobile customers can pick up the G1 during the presale. Other customers interested in the G1 may have to wait until beginning/mid October before a national public launch. Many users have seen the recent video circulating the next claiming to be the HTC Dream (AKA G1), and have been complaining about the ugly white color. Well we have good news for you too, as the G1 will be released in black, white, and brown. Being 3G enabled, the HTC manufactured G1 will unfortunately require its own data plan from T-mobile, which we expect to be more expensive then current data plans. Interestingly enough (maybe not so much knowing Google) users will be required to have a Google Gmail account for the phone to work. So far expected specs include 3G, a 5″ long by 3″ wide touch screen, and a slide out Qwerty keypad, and no mention of UMA or Wifi. We’re really excited for this all-too-secret device to hit T-mobile’s lineup. Stay tuned to TmoNews for more information coming soon!

Update: The HTC Dream (G1) will have a 3.0 megapixel camera. The presale will last 1 week, and be for existing customers only. Employees are not included in the presale, sorry! Presale begins Wednesday, September 17th, and 3G will be a large aspect of this device. Use your imagination

  5. Orlando Reyes says:

Hell yeah! If this is true I will have to get for myself as a late birthday gift (August 30 by the way). My early birthday gift was San Antonio 3G! For my birthday I think I’ll go to that strip club you were talking about. ;D

  6. mingkee says:

I am kinda doubtful about dedicated data service
    which is supported?

  7. Krubuntu says:

I would wait and try it with the regular data before switching plans. My BlackBerry data plan isn’t supposed to work with the Wing let alone an pwned iphone yet I get the web on all three devices w/o changing any of my features. Maybe the same with 3G data but we’ll have to wait and see. If the G1 is anything like the device at Google’s I/O conference, I would pay double what I pay now for data. Hurry Android! :)

  8. Orlando Reyes says:

I remember Andy Rubin saying that because some of the use of Google style advertising their could be reduced price in data. I will go through YouTube and find the video.

  9. Spoklahoma says:

Woo Hoo!!!! Did your source indicate if employees would be included in the presale period? I can’t wait to use my [wife's] handset upgrade to snag the Dream/G1!

  10. terryjohnson16 says:

I hope the version of the phone on youtube is a prototype, cause I am not feeling that design. Let me find out they are pulling an AT&T and requiring a special higher data plan.

  11. mojo fett says:

Sweet! I have 2 upgrades on my employee plan. just been waiting for this!

  12. T1 Connect says:

yea specs sound good features sound good but man that shit looks ugly the need to change the bottom part and the color and yes terry i know exactly what you mean about the plans from sidekick to blackberry to tmo unlimited you dont have to change the plan

  13. Rochester says:

Very very good news. Not just for us. But also for T-Mobile. it will help T-Mobile compete with other carriers.

By the way, can anyone please provide us with some info on how to get in on this pre-sale.

    Thanks in advance.

  14. money69 says:

I hope its true, I would definitely pick one up. Im curious how much more they’re gonna wanna charge for data.

  15. LiveCrunch says:

Ill just hope that this is true, because I just wrote about it and I gave you credit. You know I was in between iPhone 3g or Android and I said if its going to be out close to October Ill wait for Android anything pass that time I am getting iPhone 3g lol. I have iphone already and i Love it but, I thought I might just give it to my wife and I can use android lol. Nice swap huh?

  16. tony dee says:

I don’t have the confidence in TMobile’s network as others do. As a technician that worked their network pre-9/11 in Manhattan and Bronx, I don’t think they have the manpower to build out that swiftly for a 3G data network.

  17. mrwindupbird says:

tony: lot has changed since 2001…

let’s hope they are indeed the first with android as has been near-universally reported. i am saving my phone upgrade for this device, even though i am scared as hell of google as the conglomerate monster than it is becoming.

  18. center rep says:

like six years ago , I think things might have changed in that period of time billions have been invested I would hope things are very diff reception wize in NY I know that

  19. Centipede Damascus says:

I am so impatient for this, it’s not even funny.

As much as I love this ROKR I just got a couple weeks ago, I will drop it like it is radioactive for this sweet puppy.

  20. Raholco says:

Erm-has anybody checked to see if the FCC has this beast in the pipeline?

  21. asurroca says:

Re: the data plan. I’ve called T-Mobile a few different times, and diff reps have repeated the same line that the 3G data plan will not be any different priced than the current EDGE data plan. Which makes sense. ATT doesn’t charge one price for EDGE data plan and another for 3G, do they?

I’m praying this rumor is true, and that I can rush to prepurchase the “Google phone” next month. 3G launch, open network with dev site, and this? Best year ever for us loyal Tmo customers ;)

  22. Newmexican says:

    Talk about frustration.

I can only upgrade again on September 29th. For $150 I would have signed up with (almost) no questions asked. But without WiFi I am not sure that I would pay $399 on top of the added cost for a data plan.

  23. Nezzil says:

Hey guys does anyone know if the presale will be online based or if were talking phone or even store based?!

  24. Mr.gadget says:

Oh happy day!!! Oh happy day. Oh happy day!!! When the G1 came and wash the competion away.

  25. T. Landed says:

This is amazing! How do we get in on it?

  26. rHerr says:

    I’m in..
I hope it comes with GPS tho.

  27. Raholco says:

I just did a quick check of the FCC’s OET site for all cellphones that have the requisite 1700 Mhz frequency. I saw Nokia, Huawei, ZTE, Moto, Samsung, Kyocera-but no HTC.

Some of those OET entries were pretty bloody current.

I got one more pass to make to see if I can find this elusive beasty-but if the FCC ain’t got it, it ain’t happening all that quick.

  28. silk7 says:

Lets see who takes tmonews story and call it there own!
For the price- I’ll grab one!!!

  29. Ben Feldman says:

Oh man. I am so happy to hear this. Hopefully the data plan required for this won’t be any different than the standard T-Mobile 3G data prices that will be set.

I’m especially interested by the use of both a touch screen and a pointing stick… makes me wonder whether some Android apps for whatever reason only work with a touch screen or only work with the pointing stick, even though Google said that wouldn’t be a concern.

Regardless, I’m quite excited and will be ordering a black one on the 17th! $150 is a small price to pay for to end the 10 months of waiting for Android.

  30. edwin says:

YES! i was about to go purchase the new and shiny white 5610 but nvm!! ill just stick a lil bit longer but not october long LOL :D pretty good day today!
    sorry bout ur dog dude!

  31. Orlando Reyes says:

Yes. I will finally get to retire my iPhone to car audio duties. I will be walking out of store with 2 Android phones. Too bad one will be my girlfriends upgrade. I thought she wouldn’t like it because she likes small phones. Well at least it is cheap enough that she won’t nag me when I buy it. ;D

  32. Ben says:

Does anyone really think this will amount to much in the mobility market? I don’t…

  33. BIznitch says:

Yesss bc it comes in brown im dropping my sklx and getting one of these. it looks way better and prob thiner to

  34. 2o6 says:

sooooo is the HTC Touch Pro gonna be on Tmo??

  35. Lil B says:

Joshua @ BGR ALMOST got it right…

“TmoNews is not claiming that the HTC Dream will, in fact, be the first Android device to reach our hands.”

  36. Sunny says:

    Raholco….

    Can_you_paste_the_link_to_the_fcc_site_where_you_say_the_1700_MHZ_Phones…_sorry_i_typed_like_this_my_keyboard_in_the_office_jammed_lol

  37. jmakaveli24 says:

HTC Dream vs Sony Xperia? I guess the $150 presale price for that one week only for the Android phone is both a gift AND a curse. I’m torn between the two phones.

  38. John says:

Sweeet…Let me get this stright..$150 pre-sale. Does this mean that we won’t have to pay the full when it is offically released? Also talked to a T-Mo rep and he told me that the data plan will stay the same. I wonder if it will work on the T-mobile web plan as well. Can’t wait.

  39. John says:

This better come in black or else I may not get one.

  40. renmique says:

This sounds great, now if the could drop the qwerty keyboard (looks like a sidekick to me) I would pick it up

  41. Sunny says:

“Keyboard” Fixed LOL I Just Hope It Doesn’t Feel Cheap!

  42. Jason says:

    Who uses T-mobile!?

  43. T1 Connect says:

  44. Sunny says:

I use T-mobile! I had voicestream since 97 then t-mobile bought them out in 2001 So LONG TERM relationship here

  45. Steven I says:

Glad to hear some information is finally being released about this device. I can’t imagine this phone will lack WiFi and GPS, that just wouldn’t make much sense. At the 150 price point, I can see T-Mobile selling a descent amount of phones in that first week, but they are going to need to hype it, because most of the world doesn’t read tech blogs or even know that this phone is going to be released soon. Sounds like the phone is going to come out right on schedule.

  46. indy says:

So convince me to not jump ship to at&t for an iphone (that I’ve been waiting on a year and a half now) for this android phone you speak of.

My contract is already over with tmo but my wifes is not. Was thinking of jumping ship as soon as hers is over in december.

If I call today and see if I have an available upgrade will I have to sign a new contract? If not I may use the upgrade to get this $150 deal on the android and see if I like it enough to stick it out with tmo a little while longer.

    Posted from my Sidekick3.

    Thanx.

    @sunny:

    https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm

Target frequency range is 1711.25 to 1753.75 MHz for T-Mobile’s HSDPA deployment. Note that MetroPCS and Cricket will be deploying CDMA handsets in this band as well.

  48. ChloeDee says:

Wow, I can’t wait to check this out. Any word as to WHERE itll be on presale?

  49. ChloeDee says:

PS- the sidekick keyboard is awesome for messaging. im psyched to have that feature
