T-Mobile “G4X” On The Horizon? Follow Up To The LG G2x?

Well, what do we have here? Word coming from our friends at PocketNow indicates T-Mobile has the “G4x” on the horizon, an Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Android smartphone. Sporting a 4.7″ 720p display, 8-megapixel camera and 21Mbps HSPA+ data all covered in a sub-nine-millimeter casing. With the name “G4x” floating around, there are obvious references to this device being an LG-ready G2x follow-up. There isn’t a whole lot of supporting evidence otherwise that this is headed for T-Mobile, but we’re inclined to believe the “G4x” nomenclature would only be for T-Mobile. With this and the HTC Ville, the last 24 hours have given us some reason to look up after a slow start to the year for T-Mobile. Add another phone to the “stay tuned” list.

not really an LG fan but specs sound good but I think they’ll change the 21 to 48 HSPA+.

    • trickinit

      You mean 42.

      • http://joinowr.com Matt Wilkins

if the G4x ends up being 42mb/s HSPA+ I have a suspicion that it and all other 42 mb/s HSPA+ devices will require the 5GB or 10 GB data plan (based on the restriction they had when the Amaze 4G and Galaxy S2 went on sale).

        • Dominique

The only requirement was that a person getting any phone for free for Valentines had to keep 5GB until the mail in rebate was processed.  After that they could drop down to 200MB data plan if they wanted to.

        • http://joinowr.com Matt Wilkins

That may be true now but I wouldn’t be surprised if in the future T-Mobile required certain data packages for certain devices.

  • Noor Mahmoud

Most likely the Optimus X3/4x hd. However, I won’t trust LG after the mess the G2x was.

  • Anonymous

    no hspa+ 42? D:

  • neednewphone

    Galaxy nexus….

  • Cake

having owned a g2x, i will never buy another device from lg again

    • Catdecorator

I have to agree, the g2x is such a terrible phone, and LG not owning up, I now have the t-mobile Samsung galaxy s2.. This phone is the best, I ent out and bought the Samsung galaxy tab 8.9, and it is great also. I stand behind Samsung products

    • 4t5

HTC made some really bad phones once upon a time. So did Samsung. BEHOLD 2 anyone?????? You are going to be missing out.

      • Dfirrballwow

Yeah I think this phone could get LG back in the game.. I would take a long look at this phone first before buying it..

    • Eddie18

My G2X works flawlessly.. don’t know why all the hate

  • Anonymous

If this ends up being a reliable piece of hardware (unlike the G2x), then I would definitely give this a spin.

    • Anonymous

The G2X WAS reliable hardware, it was just the software was lacking. I too thought badly of the G2X but once I put ICS on mine it flew, the phone is awesome and feels great. THIS is how the phone should have felt since the very beginning. I can now say I love my G2X and will at the very least look into the G4X as my next phone!

  • Aaa

Iphone 5 please!! Android phones are all the same today. Not much new. If only they would improve the battery life.

    • Newjaruz

Yeah especially because all the iPhones are soooooooooo different from each other

      • Aaa

Reason i say that is because ive had gs2. Gs1, mytouch4g, g2, sensation.. Not much different. I like the gs2 the best. But put something new inside besides a bigger screen.

        • Anonymous

Its called options….. something iPhones dont offer.

        • Aaa

Only reason i want an iphone and i think its superior is because of the games and apps. Im young and like to do more with playing games for amusement and i would like to buy adapters for either music connectors or piano or even thermomoter for bbq..andriod doesnt offer this. There is too much variety of phones to say ones better than the next.

        • Anonymous

Dude you’re going to bbq your phone

        • Spanky

What do you mean iPhones don’t offer options??? They come in 16, 32, and 64 GB capacities!

          /sarcasm_off

        • Dfirrballwow

WOW yeah that’s the reason I want an iphone. Never mind it’s the best paper weight you will ever owen.

      • Anonymous

        priceless.

    • Kirk

iOS is nothing more than an app drawer. The entire operating system is one big app drawer.
I will say, once iOS gets widgets and a seperate app drawer, I will switch.

    • Anonymous

      fucking idiot

can u even tell the difference between an  iphone 4S and an iphone 4 cuz i cant. iphone 4s and iphone 4 yeah theres a  biiiiiiiiig difference there, dumbass

  • Junieruiz

now that’s what I’m talkin LG need to make a real statement with this phone I got rid of my G2X too many problems with it after my fifth 1 it was a rap I moved on to a bigger and better thing galaxy S2 I love it I have no problem with it the screen and camera are amazing I don’t know If i will ever go back to a LG phone but you never know with technology right now I’m waiting on the galaxy s3 but I’m not going to lie the specs on the G4X are looking really good plus I’m lovin the name it might be t mobile version of their galaxy nexus you never know with them I’m just glad t mobile is steppin there game up:-):-):-)

  • Jwicks82

really!?!? how can these magenta even think about getting back together with this company? The G2X was such a terrible experience for so many people I would assume they would stay far away.

    • Anonymous

“how can these magenta even think about getting back together with this company? ”

      LG = cheap

  • Dmnstar

I’m rather disappointed that so many people had such trouble with the G2x. I used a rooted one and the only thing I didn’t like was the camera, which wasn’t quite as good as the one on the G2.

  • Lcg1519

    Vanilla android or gtfo!

  • Jsto5539

I will never buy another LG device…….EVER. G2X was en epic fail.

Looks like no SOC manufacturer other than Qualcomm has a baseband radio that supports HSPA+ 42 Mbps network.
Interesting dilemma for TMo. Go for a modern, more powerful SOC with a lowner speed networking or less powerful SOC working at higher network speeds.

    • Anonymous

Does Tmobile’s network even reach that speed yet?

      • standcorrected

Highest ive ever got was 24mbps down on my GSII. much better than at&ts and sprints can attain.

      • Anonymous

Generally speaking the 42 Mbps phones in practice have download times that are better than 21 Mbps, even though they are far below their theoritical maximums….

For example a Amaze 4G would result in 10Mbps steady where a LG2x will result in a 7Mbps.

    • Vim

That may possibly explain why T-Mobile jumped on the 2nd Tier Ville/One S instead of the Edge/Endeavor/One X.  The Edge has a quad-core Tegra 3, not a Snapdragon.

      • Anonymous

        Is Ville based on Krait?
The thing is that right now only Qualcomm has chips that support HSPA+ 42. And the baseband chip is not compatible with other SOCs besides Snapdragon. Other manufacturers do not care that much for it (unfortunately) as they are into LTE.
That is the reason Galaxy S2 TMo was released later than cousins in ATT/Sprint since Samsung cannot find a 42Mbps baseband chipset to associate its Exynos.

For example Motorola has its Wrigley chipset for LTE radios with the Razr and Bionic and hence they were able to use TI OMAP4 as the SOC.
Samsung with its Nexus 4 line uses Via Telecom LTE baseband in conjunction with OMAP4.
But both ATT LTE as well as TMo HSPA+ phones still use only Snapdragon S3 based SOCs….

        • Vim

Yes, the Ville is a dual core Krait S4.  To my knowledge it’s the first smartphone with the Krait.

  • thargic

fool me once, shame on LG…  never have I witnessed or in this case experienced such lousy
customer support.  Remembe the G2X…no LG for me!

  • Franklin

    will it have a quad-core?

  • http://twitter.com/miredinbs Whatzitoya

What processor? Looks like they’re pulling a Motorola i.e. the same thing, but different. Might be worth it with Tegra 3 though if they put one in there.

  • Doc

For me the g2x hardware is nice. Great looking phone. Everyone loves it. The software was crap. I root my phones anyway but I don’t want to have to rely on the dev community to make my phone work.

    • BigMixxx

totally agree there…uber nice hardware…crap for software and support.  Until they change, I ain’t budging…

    • http://joinowr.com Matt Wilkins

Agree and I told T-Mobile point blacnk that it’s ridiculous that we have to void the warranty on a device to use features that THEY tout as competitive advantages (Wi-Fi calling is an example)

      • Jordan Jefferson10

Wifi calling was built in on the G2x

        • http://joinowr.com Matt Wilkins

I know its built in but on mine at some point Wi-Fi calling stopped working and even after a SIM card and handset exchange still didn’t work and never did until I rooted and installed CM7

        • Anonymous

Sounds like a personal problem…. mine has always worked..owned the phone since launch

  • Colonel Heero

    So where is the G3??

  • Magnum500s

Waiting for HTC and Tmobile to make a follow up to the G2… Come on G3!!!!

  • Bobblehead

What happened to the G3x??? It must have been pulled and buried faster than the G2x!!!

    Not again LG.

  • Mitch Anderson

had the G2x since it came out… if its supported by cyanogen and all the specs look good.. I’ll get this one too.

  • http://twitter.com/jamesdax James Matthews

Where’s my follow up to the HD7?

  • Anonymous

screw you lg i had the g2x never again lg never again

  • Anonymous

Bring on the HTC One^x please, with 42 HSPA+.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1060836854 Randall Ainsworth

Don’t buy anything made by LG. They only make crap.

Based on their lack of support and lack of quality testing with the G2X, people who buy this phone are suckers.

    • Anonymous

While I agree, after installing ICS on the phone it feels great. I did feel like a sucker but thanks to the great devs the phone is actually worth owning. After installing ICS I do not regret my purchase.

I will not make the same mistake twice though, i’ll wait at least a month to see what new problems this phone has, or who knows, maybe LG learned from their mistakes (hopefully) since the hardware sounds very nice.

      • http://profiles.google.com/mrstrat Randall Ainsworth

I finally rooted mine a few months back just to get it working right. It’s much better, but still a few minor problems. Waiting for CM9 to get a stable release, then I’ll go to that. Not sure what I’ll do when my contract is up, but it won’t have anything to do with LG.

        • Anonymous

Devs on XDA have already released their builds and people are testing CM9 and reporting positive results.

  • Anonymous

“an Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Android smartphone…”

    That isn’t a Galaxy Nexus….

    YAWN

  • Anonymous

This sounds like the EXACT phone I want, tegra 3, screen size is great, I love LG screens (IPS nova /whatever) although I agree super amoled hd looks great i’m not a huge fan I rather have a nice IPS screen. I’m willing to give LG another chance because this phone sounds awesome. For now we wait till MWC…

    • Vim

I’d take a quality IPS display over a super amoled as well.  IPS displays produce less strain on the eyes while reading text, and their colors are more realistic.

  • Anonymous

    pass

    bad ancestry

  • Anonymous

i will never buy an lg again.. had the g2x. got it replaced 5 times with nothing but rebooting issues and the stupid phone shutting down and had to pull the battery out. plus all the screen bleeding which looked like crap. super amoled plus over those crappy IPS screens any day. that was bullshit and the phone could have been good but they couldn’t fix those issues so i said screw it sold the phone and upgraded to the SGSII and that was the best thing i ever did. even rooting the phone and using different roms didn’t cut it.

  • MNBug

Another version of the G2x.  Oh dear god no.  LG needs to stick to stoves and refrigerators.

  • Tony

Noooooooooo!!!! I’m waiting for a HTC folowup to the G2. I will never by a LG phone. When are we getting a new qwerty keyboard phone? I have to have a physical keyboard. I’m hoping for HTC G3 with a keyboard. LG should have never been allowed to mess up the flagship G series. Tmobile messed up a great opportunity to make great G phones but they allowed Version to take over with the Droid series.

  • fuzzyb

Don’t fall for it, It’s a trick. I think we all learned our lessons from LG with the G2x…

(Sent from my Amaze 4G, and loving it!)

  • Rodger67

Everyone is complaining about the G2x, but if you will remember the Samsung Behold 2. All companies make a POS product every now and again. But I don’t see everyone not buying Samsung products. I own the G2x and am happy with it after rooting the phone. What is with the bigger screen size? I want a smartphone that I can carry, if I wanted a bigger screen I would buy a Tablet or use my computer.

  • Tre Goolsby

Never buying another LG product again. If it has a great development base then i’ll think about it but i won’t be buying it from LG as I will never support their business of failing to grant developers the tools necessary to develop for their devices.

    • Minhaj Masud

the fault was on nVidia’s part…

  • Mgkaotic

This is probably the LG X3 that was floating around with the quad core tegra 3.  If it is this will be my new phone. I guess im one of the few that loves my G2x and I dont see the Amaze or GSII as a major upgrade.

    • Dfirrballwow

I had the G2x and I loved the phone.. But I did update to the gs2 I have to admit that I love this phone.. I never have been much for Samsung but this one really did it for me… Before when I had my G2x I would sit and wish I could get another phone.. Now with the gs2 I don’t. I’m very happy with this phone..

  • Juliandcfan

This will be my new phone as long as it has stock android like on the G2x. Nothing is worse than the skins that Motorola, LG, HTC, and Samsung ruin their phones with.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mrstrat Randall Ainsworth

The G2X was not stock Android – close though – only a minimum of crapware.

  • Slick

going to be released with gingerbread “ics coming by summer” lawllll

  • Anonymous

Is this my que to laugh uncontrollably?

    • Gentleman559

      No its mine. ROTLMFAO

  • Anonymous

I owned the G2x and I cant buy another LG phone if they will not support the device.  IT was full of bugs and the updates took forever or just never came.  I jumped on the windows phone 7 team and I dont think I am going back to Android.  When Tmobile gets the Nokia Lumia 900.  I really loved Android but the G2x just turned me off.  My HTC HD7 never ever crashes NEVER!!! …..

  • Havoktek

Let me get this out the way… my G2x rocks…It rock kernels, it rocks Miui, it rocks ported ICS builds….and it rocks STOCK Gingerbread….whenever the mood hits me.
BUT I’ve learned that no matter how much I wanna like them, the phone is only as good as the support.LG dropped the ball and Devs pulled it through…..So no go LG, can’t trust ya’TMO won’t set the boundaries so no sale here…I’ll just rock this phone till it dies, then it’s back to Samsung

  • Cisco

I’ve always been on Android but after trying out the Win7 and iPhone UI, I don’t give a crap if they come out with a hex core , I want a phone that will not get a force close error every single time. My G2x has pissed me off for the last time. I feel bad for whoever I have to rip off to get rid of this POS!

  • Thecityboy781

LG should stick to making kitchen stuff

  • Sperez3478

My LG G2X is the worse android phone I have ever owned – would never get another LG phone again

Try flashing a ROM on it. Fixed all my problems.

  • Wilma Flintstone

Hmmm… I Raised an eyebrow.  Will have to demo it in stores before I decide.

But til then, next week = TIZEN!!!!  Can you believe it?  I know right?  Sooo much awesome!!!  Can’t wait!!!!  Stop talking to me!!!  AAAAGGGHHH!!!!!!  What Have You Done David?!?!?!  WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!  Do not adjust your TV set.  We now control the Veritcal, and the Horizontal… *Twilight Zone Music Plays* O.O

In other headlines, The Last Story is coming to the Wii in North America.  :D

    • guest

Maybe it’s time to put down the crack pipe?

  • Anonymous

Looking back and looking forward. I have yet to read a single post to this article, but I can guarantee you the majority of them will be about how bad the original G2x was and they won’t get getting another phone from LG…  I have a G2x and I’m one of only 3 people on the planet that hasn’t had problems. It’s been awesome since day one. That being said, I had a Samsung Vibrant prior to that, and I recall everyone saying they’d NEVER own another Samsung product…blah…blah…blah…  and now they’re all sporting SGS2 or GNex, or GNote, etc… Just saying… don’t pop off until you see the phone. Otherwise, you might fit the bill of open mouth – insert foot.

    • GinaDee

You must have gotten it much later after a myriad of the bugs were fixed via software updates.

My device overheated, rebooted on its own, factory reset in the middle of the night several times and would get stuck on EDGE even when other T-Mobile devices were on 3G/4G.

I went through 3 devices and finally the last one was tolerable.  Even T-Mobile knew the G2x was so bad it mysteriously disappeared from its store shelves only to return with updates to supposedly fix its problems.

      • Anonymous

Indeed. My G2x on 2.2 was a horrible piece of crap. 2.3 fixed 95% of the bugs, but I’d still get random shutdowns that would require removing the battery. Flashed a ROM from XDA, zero problems since then.

      • Anonymous

I have had my G2x since day one launch and no out of the ordinary problems here.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1060836854 Randall Ainsworth

LG is a company that makes crap…they’ve always made crap and will likely continue to do so.

  • Jtech2k3

    HTC G3 or GTFO.

    • Magmaspawn

      Love it!

    • ihatefanboys

      Agreed 100%

It’s funny about all the negative remarks on LG phones.  I’m not loyal to any however, I remember when the Samsung Galaxy first came out and everyone said NEVER AGAIN will I buy a crappy Samsung.  HAHAHA Sooo now everyone wants a Nexus, SII or Note. Isn’t it funny how short memories can be?

My point is I think LG will come around because they make good products.

    • Vim

      LOL! My thoughts exactly…

    • Anonymous

You couldn’t be more on point.

      • Dominique

Not really, the Vibrant had “some” bugs, but not near the extent that the G2X had.  For at least 5 months it was the worst phone in T-mobile history.  It dwarfed the issues that the HD2 and Cliqs had, so much so that they pulled it off the market until there was an update and even then it had problems.

A senior rep I know has one and it rebooted and froze all the time and they hated it.  I ended up rooting it for them and putting on CM7, which fixed all the issues.   Great hardware but it’s sad that an independent group could make an OS that ran better on the phone than anything that the manufacturer could come up with.

The G2X will be long remembered as a horrible phone but it’s just like the Cliqs and the HD2, the software was the issue and not the hardware.

        • Cashman

exactly, the g2x was pulled from all stores for about 2-3 months lol. I’ve never seen a phone with so many issues

        • Slick

damnit no wonder my android experience sucked!  i too had the hd2 prior to the g2x =(

    • Scarfacemario

Haha as much as I also bash LG due to my G2x issues you have a great point haha

  • Dfirrballwow

I don’t understand the point of everbody complaining about a vanilla ice cream.. I mean after all isn’t that the nexus? So what’s wrong with lg doing it samsung did it with the nexus? Everyone sounds like a bunch of cry babies

  • Anonymous

I know they have a tegra 3 in there and want to take advantage of it but wow that screen is to big for me.

  • JBLmobileG1

Id give LG a chance. Yeah they might have made mistakes with the g2x but Iam sure they learned from them. If they fail with this phone only then would I not buy another LG.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1060836854 Randall Ainsworth

They’ve always been a crappy company that makes crappy products. Nothing has changed or will changed. It’s just how they roll.
