T-Mobile G2 Warranty Replacement Units Coming With Gingerbread?

A big shock happened for at least one T-Mobile G2 owner who recently had to replace his G2 for warranty reasons as his replacement already had Android 2.3 Gingerbread installed. The thing is, he isn’t alone as at least a handful of G2 owners have experienced the very same thing happening this week. It’s an odd turn of events for the T-Mobile G2 this week as first word comes down that it’s nearing the end of its shelf-life and we now hear Gingerbread is closer than we think. Perhaps “coming soon” this time actually means “coming soon.” That would be a nice turn of events for a change. We’ll just cross our fingers a Gingerbread update that arrives “soon.”

    I have a G2. I had gingerbread on my insurance-refurbished device!

why are so many phones needing replacement?

      • Anonymous

Is Wi-fi Calling and Tethering working on replaced phones?  I saw that getting one or both those to work just right was floated as the reason T-Mobile hasn’t done the OTA yet but I don’t know how true that is.

        • Anonymous

That’s what I want to know!

      • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/35HLVJSI34LMH5M274SCGWDZBY mike

I dont know why, but my G2 has performed fawlessly, including Wi-Fi, since I got it…

Dropped mine and cracked the camera housing

  • mustbechris

they’ve done a sort-of-update – they switched the keyboard to the gingerbread keyboard, but that’s it.

  • Hindu Elvis Pimp

So if they install it on warranty replacements, why can’t they go ahead and send out the OTA?

    • Ajg1718

that’s the manufacturer doing that for the devices being used for exchanges as testing perhaps … and could very well release the OTA soon for the users

  • Ws6driver Js

I have replaced my g2 twice this month with 2.3.3 that I have installed. I hope I am helping lol

Has HTC and/or Tmobile provided a way to download Gingerbread manually instead of waiting for the OTA update?  If I didn’t care about my warranty, I would’ve already rooted my phone and installed Gingerbread…

Just got my G2 replacement today, and it has 2.3.3

    • G2XGUY

can you upload a video to youtube of the gingerbread

  • Bxcutie4life2001

    who cares?

    • Alex

      i do

  • CharlieSheen

I only have my “4thG2″ for two weeks and it has 2.2. Guess what, today….REBOOT! They have not addressed the issue. Just keeps sending out refabs.
What a pain it is to back up and restore. Makes me miss my BB. Not really but saying.

I am with the others and David. Apple will rule. So now i have to call and go thru the entire troubleshooting gig again or deal with the reboots and maybe 2.3 will fix.

Bring on ATT and the iphone!

    ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • thatotherguy

take a look at io5, seems to be alot like android…. have fun with your ilocked

    • Anonymous

Still using my original G2.  Running like a champ.  I hate getting refurbs when you have to do a warranty exchange.  I only had to do that once with one of my phones, but I went through 3 refurbs until I got a decent refurb.

  • CharlieSheen

Oh yeah, and I will be sure to buy an android tablet from TMO.

    Yeah!!

    Keep buying the worthless hardware.

Smile and way boys, smile and wave.

  • Sunnydayz47e

After the G2 receives its ota Gingerbread update, will Swype still be installed and working properly? I would like Swype or HTC’s Trace to be installed. If not, I would prefer to stick with Froyo. Thanks.

    • Daitron

Yeah, my fiance is using Swype on her warranty replcement thats already running 2.3.3 and she said is smooth as silk.

  • rev2redlineguy

I’ve had my G2 since December and no problems at all (knock on wood). That is cool to hear that Gingerbread might be sooner than we think. Hopefully the OTA will be a smooth process without any flaws.

  • Mix

    Who cares….

    How bout something more relevant

    • Alex

      me

      • castle

I care now this hopefully we can get this thing rooted

        • sino8r

It won’t be long now that there is a demand for it…
We and the other guys have had this leaked for a couple of months now but already rooted the leaked rom. Those who flashed the htc leak untouched were screwed because of not reading and overeagerness. But since many are now getting referbs with 2.3, we’ll have to obtain root all over.

    • TweetMo

Just because you don’t care doesn’t mean others don’t. Wait until you buy a phone and read this 4 months later.
Wait, you won’t buy a phone because you’re mom won’t let you! See ya, 12 year old.

    • jarjon76

If you don’t care, why did you not only bother to read the post, but also comment?

  • Luism_360

I also got my G2 back from HTC and it came with gingerbread 2.3.3

    • g2xguy

can you upload a video to youtube of the gingerbread

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/35HLVJSI34LMH5M274SCGWDZBY mike

Ok, so if G2 replacements are arriving with Gingerbread, why are they not pushing an OTA? Makes no sense…..

    • Anonymous

Good point…only thing I could even think of is that the OTA version is more involved, and has to be better tested to ensure that the user’s settings/apps/etc don’t get borked in the updating process.

  • Daitron

Yeah, My fiance got her G2 replacement today as well , anmd hers did have Android 2.3.3, this sucks because I have a g2x and im still waiting on my update. fml

    • g2xperson

can you upload a video to youtube of the gingerbread

      • nil21

Why don’t you put CM7 or Faux’s AOSP ROM on it? Both are based on 2.3.4.

        • castle

If you got an updated phone you can’t no root method I’m definitely upset cause the phone I traded in had cm7

    • Jabombardier

I heard that they are rolling out gingerbread on the G2X. T-Mobile is supposed to announced it today or tomorrow. Got this news from the T-Mobile forums page under G2X.

  • Gm Aharrington1

This is great and I’m sure people are griping what about my phone. My question is what about the event in Houston with HTC and T-Mobile?

  • Anonymous

Coming soon usually means they haven’t decided if it is coming at all.

  • Lilt_19

Please help me out….I’m a G2 user…and have heard of Gingerbread…but could someone please explain to me exactly what it is and what advantages of getting the OTA to 2.3 is? Thanks!

  • D10369319

Just a quick FYI, Gingerbread is 3.0 , 2.3 is an updated version of Froyo. Thought you would probably want to know.

    • Wallyworld

Hey jackass….3.0 is called honeycomb….2.3 has always been gingerbread. Get your info straight before you start posting more nonsense….

It’s not even on TMobiles site anymore

  • None

If I buy a phone at full price and unlock it, it can be use on TMO (with edge or less, I know, dont care about that).  My questions is… will I get updates?  I do not imagine TMO would update my (example) AT&T phone and since I would not have any AT&T service, I would not expect they will send me updates.
In short, does someone who buys an AT&T phone get updates from anyone WITHOUT rooting!
** Or possibly the other way around too.  If I was AT&T but wanted a Sensation on edge, who does my updates or do I not get any updates without custom ROMS?

    • Nick

No, if you buy an AT&T phone and unlock it to work on TMobile, you won’t get updates.  It doesn’t work that way.

      • Guest

Thanks Nick.  Didnt think so but I was always curious.

        • DaOnlyRecless

You can always check the OEM’s website.

DAVID GIVE US SOME SORT OF UPDATE ON THE G2X

    • Gm Aharrington1

The g2x ISN’T getting it until summer. Summer starts June 21st, the g2x is a new phone updates are done in older models first. Be patient. If not then void the warranty and root it.

  • Coqui1983

i ordered my replacement *crossing fingers* i’ll update you when it arrives ;)

  • Omar222

Any battery improvement??whats different about gingerbread

      • Anonymous

There’s definite battery improvement. It’s much smoother. A lot quicker. I normally see lag when going from apps to my homescreen or going into my photos, and that’s completely gone. There’s now 3G and 4G signal icons instead of just the H. The android keyboard (the virtual one) is way improved. It’s just an overall better build.

        • motb

Did they change the notification bar to black or is it still white?

        • Reinzane

          It’s black! Everything is black!

  • Omar222

Can’t root my phone anymore double :((

  • Coqui1983

ok I just received my replacement so i’m back with the update as i stated and i am pleased to announce it DOES indeed have gingerbread ;)

  • Myblacfriend01

Well my wife’s replacement g2 just come today June 10 and it diffently has 2.2, so she’s not one of the cool kids

    • Coqui1983

Sorry to hear that, sucks big time. so it’s official not ALL replacements come with 2.3

  • Julio Feliciano

“ It’s an odd turn of events for the T-Mobile G2 this week as first word comes down that it’s nearing the end of its shelf-life and we now hear Gingerbread is closer than we think.”
T-mobile needs to remember who they are and not get pushed my AT&T. They got rid of unlimited Data and there good phones take forever to update software and they want to get rid of it. This is way tMO is losing customers to Verizon and Sprint.

  • Chrisdlv77

got my G2 and it has 2.3.3 on but i really dont see much of a difference other then the 4g and 3g symbol but it is a little faster and a couple of more options in the setting file

  • Reinzane

Mine came with Gingerbread. I was thrilled! Especially since it’s end of life. Hopefully this lasts til I can get the Sensation. I’ve gone through 4 of these G2′s but I love each one.

  • Chrisdlv77

wasn’t the gingerbread update supposed to come with sense??

I’ve had this version since they originally leaked it and there are some positives and negatives associated with it. It seems to generally be less stable than froyo (It’s not horrible or anything). Twitter seems to be especially vulnerable to this. My quadrant  score also seemed to have dropped a couple hundred points since the upgrade and feels a tad more laggy. However, battery life is MUCH improved and the radio seems to be a little better as well. Also, netflix won’t work on Gingerbread, you will get audio, but no video..

  • Cristianvzq

I just went to tmobile today cus my g2ms power button isn’t working and I’m getting my replacement unit tomorrow!!!.hopefully it’ll have gingerbread!

  • Justforcl788

The same thing happened to me! I needed a replacement because my first one wasn’t working. They sent me a replacement but the power button on that phone wasn’t working correctly so they sent me a second replacement and to my surprise the UI looked different so I immediately went into my settings and discovered I was running 2.3! At first I was pissed off that they had sent me a faulty phone as my replacement but it definetly worked out in my favor!
