T-Mobile G2 Warranty Devices Shipped With Gingerbread In Error

T-Mobile has internally acknowledged what has already spread through the Android community, that a small number of T-Mobile G2 units replaced through warranty exchange came with Gingerbread pre-installed. As it turns out and we can’t say we are surprised in any possible way that this was done in error and the update for G2 isn’t ready for primetime yet. We know HTC is continuing to tease the Gingerbread update so we know it’s coming, even if the G2 has been sent to the smartphone graveyard. Guess we’ll just have to keep waiting.

  • AJBoogie

Do the gingerbread updates still allow you to wifi tether for free with the G2?

    • MSalam11

      Yes.

    • CharlieSheen

Received my 5th replacement yesterday and it DID have Gingerbread. The one I received two weeks earlier did NOT. What a riot.

There are some bugs that I have already discovered. The haptic response is toggles back and forth. I can live with that.

Judging by the number of recent replacements, sounds like the G2 is not such a great device after all.

BTW my computer sees the phone as a Hot Spot but cannot get a DNS address. Either can any other wifi enabled device.

The last phone replacement included a sim card and I am wondering if they stuck it to me then.

Does anyone have written documentation that states that G2 owners are entitled to tethering? I could take that into a store and report back as to what happens.

i had to replace my G2 as soon as I got the first one home but the replacement has been stellar. The G2 is an awesome device, im running 190 apps on mine with no lag. BTW tethering and HotSpot work fine…you do know that they are two different things right ? The way to get the hotspot to work is to just set it as android ap….any encrypted settings wont work, so it will be an open hotspot that anyone in the vicinity will see as “android ap”

      hope this helps.

I got my replacement today and it has Gingerbread. Which would be thrilling, except that I was already running Gingerbread through CM7. And this new build is unrootable. (And from what I’m seeing on the XDA forum and in the G2root channel, nobody is really interesting in trying to get root on the new build. Seems like the developers have moved on to bigger and better things. Can’t say I blame them.)

It just sucks, because now all the cool root apps I had are worthless until I get a new phone. Plus, I can’t use wifi tethering anymore unless I pay extra for the feature. (And no thanks, I already pay for my data plan, I should be able to use that data however I want)

    • Ty

T-mobile doesn’t charge you extra for tethering, the reps have even told me you can just use the built-in portable wifi hotspot for free

  • Tomas Arroyo

I call bullshit! The ‘test’ roms that leak are the same if not the same as official builds that leak, HTC makes the roms the same issue was brought up with Windows Mobile roms

  • Tomas Arroyo

@rommy just flash to th 2.2 that came with your G2, should be at xda if not ask tmobile for it then root

    • Rommy0515

@google-7d4f26ab44da9345352cf488af9ebbcf:disqus Currently the word on XDA is that you can’t downgrade. I’m just holding out hope that someone finds an exploit…

I liked my phone way better when I had a custom ROM on it.

      • Mikeysmith281

custom roms were better than the stock is. but check this out, they dont even list the g2 for sale on the t-mo website anymore….

no its not an error. They say its is already coming ota, and everyone should have it within a month, according to customer support. I just called and told them i want my phone with a test os replaced, and they said it is final and being released

So lame. How do you accidentally put new software on a phone? Did these phones just update by themselves? This never happens. Ive never known a device to get updated without some form of planned roll out/ availability.

Does the Gingerbread update improve battery life?

    • Rommy0515

No, the battery life is horrible. From what I can tell, the build is buggy as hell. I’m pretty disappointed. (Some examples of bugs: The browser crashes constantly, apps that are downloaded do not appear in the app drawer without a powercycle and it has some problem communicating with the Amazon appstore)

      • Unalloyedcube

I have none of the problems you mentioned.

  • Corbanski

The battery life went to crap with gingerbread hopefully when T-Mobile releases 2.3 officially it will have a fix. In the mean time any suggestions?

  • ElPablo

I flashed a Gingerbread ROM, no issues with battery. Bloatware is usually to blame.
My G2 is great with Gingerbread.

Just curious if anyone knows if this is still going on.  Have a replacement coming tomorrow and I’m dreading that it’s coming with 2.3.3.

My buddy got his replacement G2 about a month ago and was gonna sell it but decided to keep it and a couple days ago when he opened it to his surprise it’s got 2.3.3, awesome!

  • Jim Newman

I just downloaded the leaked official(unofficial) ROM and installed on an unrooted G2. It works great!
