T-Mobile Announces Sidekick 4G Details, Along With HSPA+ 21

T-Mobile, in combination with Samsung Mobile are officially unveiling to the world, the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G by Samsung. The newest Android smartphone in the T-Mobile lineup pays homage to the Sidekick of old while delivering Android power on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network complete with theoretical download speeds of up to 21 Mbps.

Complete with a 3.5″ touchscreen marking the first entry into the Sidekick lineup that features a touch sensitive display. The “pop-tilt” hinge reveals the famous five row keyboard that has long been a staple in the Sidekick line. We could even go as far to say it is single most important reason the Sidekick line rose to prominence during its heyday.

Delivering two brand new features in Sidekick “Group Text” and “Cloud Text,” the Sidekick 4G hopes to “redefine” messaging. Sidekick’s “Group Text” feature will let customers create, name, manage and participate in reply-all group text conversations. “Cloud Text” provides an option to text friends/family across platforms, be it from the comfort of your home PC or from your brand new Sidekick 4G.

The Sidekick 4G will come preloaded with both Facebook and Twitter applications along with integrated Google services including Gmail, Google Talk, Google Maps. As an Android device, the Sidekick 4G will take advantage of the thousands of Apps available via the Android Market.

The “Jump” key, an “easy access physical button” enables customers to multitask quickly by switching active applications. The Sidekick 4G is now an entertainment powerhouse powered by T-Mobile HSPA+, the Sidekick’s Media Room features YouTube videos, T-Mobile TV, Slacker radio and Samsung Media Hub with shows from CBS, Fox, MTV, NBC, Paramount and Warner Bros. Furthermore, T-Mobile customers rocking the Samsung Media Hub on their Sidekick 4G will be able to bill Media Hub charges directly to their monthly T-Mobile bills.

The Sidekick 4G hardware comes complete with a 1 GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor. A VGA front-facing camera will power your T-Mobile Video Chat conversations by Qik. Android 2.2 will be your Android version of choice.

The Sidekick 4G will also be the first T-Mobile device to come equipped with DriveSmart, the first of a it’s kind service that helps prevent distracted driving. When enabled, DriveSmart will allow the user to send automatic messages to incoming callers and arriving text messages that let’s them know you’ll contact the person when it’s safe to do so. Pretty nifty and hopefully this will come enabled on all future T-Mobile devices.

If you’ve managed to read this far, the Sidekick 4G gallery below shows off the two launch colors, Matte Black and Pearl Magenta. The Sidekick 4G is expected to hit T-Mobile shelves later this spring!

T-Mobile Sidekick Is Reborn

New Sidekick 4G is a Lightning-Fast and Stylish Communication Hub, Delivering Evolved Messaging and Entertainment at 4G Speeds

BELLEVUE, Wash., and DALLAS — March 15, 2011 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S.,1 today unveiled the new T-Mobile Sidekick® 4GTM by Samsung. The new AndroidTM-powered smartphone pays tribute to its heritage with its stylish good looks and a killer keyboard while redefining messaging and upgrading to 4G speeds. One of T-Mobile’s fastest smartphones running on America’s Largest 4G NetworkTM, the new Sidekick 4G is capable of delivering theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps.

The T-Mobile Sidekick has long been known for its innovative and distinctive design, and the Sidekick 4G does not disappoint. The 3.5-inch display marks the first Sidekick to feature a touch screen and its sturdy “pop-tilt” hinge reveals the previously acclaimed, five-row QWERTY keyboard that has long been a Sidekick hallmark and the reason behind its status as an exceptional messaging device.

The new Sidekick 4G leverages its quality keyboard along with Sidekick Group TextTM and Cloud TextTM to redefine messaging. Sidekick’s Group Text feature lets customers create, name, manage and participate in reply-all group text conversations, enabling them to lead their network in conversation and social planning. Group Text breathes new life into one of the most popular forms of messaging allowing Sidekick 4G customers to initiate and share the benefit of the application with SMS-capable devices from flip phones to smartphones. In addition, Cloud Text provides the option to text with friends or groups across platforms, whether from the comfort of their PC’s large screen and keyboard, or from their new Sidekick 4G.

“Backed by the faster speeds on T-Mobile’s 4G network, the new Sidekick 4G offers customers both speed and style,” said Andrew Sherrard, senior vice president, product management, T-Mobile USA. “We’ve reinvented the messaging experience that made the Sidekick such an iconic device, and supercharged it with communication and entertainment experiences that take full advantage of our 4G network.”

Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile, said, “We are proud that T-Mobile selected Samsung to help create the next-generation Sidekick and carry the iconic Sidekick brand and device to the next level. Samsung redesigned the new Sidekick 4G with our best-in-class hardware, combined with T-Mobile’s 4G network speeds, the Android operating system, and unique messaging and entertainment features, to make this a perfect match for both loyal Sidekick fans and new Sidekick owners.”The new Sidekick 4G also comes preloaded with Facebook® and TwitterTM applications, and provides easy interaction with customers’ social networks by allowing them to update their status from the notification pane and browse their feeds from the home screen. They have the ability to sync their social network contacts to the phone’s address book, which lets them post to their friends’ walls or comment on their status. And multitasking is easier than ever with the Sidekick 4G’s jump key, an easy-to-access physical button that enables customers to quickly switch between active applications, even during a phone call, or assign keyboard shortcuts to their favorite functions or applications.

In addition to a communication hub, the new Sidekick 4G is now an entertainment hub. With speeds as fast as home broadband, enjoying a favorite TV show or surfing the Web on the go is a breeze. Sidekick’s Media Room features one place to enjoy music, videos, movies, YouTube®, T-Mobile TV® and Slacker Radio, and to search for content regardless of the source. The integrated media player, also accessible through the Media Room, spans across all media including music, video and Internet radio. Customers also have the option to rent or purchase their favorite movies and TV programs directly from the Samsung Media Hub, which offers a robust collection of movie and next-day TV show titles from CBS, Fox, MTV Networks, NBC Universal, Paramount and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. Customers now have the option to place Media Hub charges directly to their monthly T-Mobile service bill.

Complementing the messaging communication features, the new Sidekick 4G is equipped with a VGA front-facing camera and pre-installed T-Mobile Video Chat powered by QikTM, to ensure you are always present with your social circle. Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) and a speedy 1 GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, so consumers can keep up with their favorite blogs while on the move, search for the must-try dinner spots and map the way to their next destination — all at blazing fast speeds. The new smartphone will also offer dynamic media features and integrated GoogleTM services, including GmailTM, Google MapsTM and access to thousands of applications on Android MarketTM.

The new Sidekick 4G also comes equipped with DriveSmartTM from T-Mobile, a first-of-its kind service from a U.S. carrier, that helps prevent distracted driving. When initiated, DriveSmart Basic provides automatic incoming call and message management, sending a customizable note to callers and senders, letting them know that the recipient is driving and will respond when it’s safe. DriveSmart Plus offers the same functionality, with the added capability to automatically activate when the handset is in a moving vehicle, as well as advanced parental controls for enhanced peace of mind when teen drivers are behind the wheel.

Offered exclusively to T-Mobile customers, the new T-Mobile Sidekick 4G is expected to be available later this spring in two stylish colors — matte black or pearl magenta. Customers can visit http://sidekick.t-mobile.com/ for more information.

Well atleast isn’t not using ARM11 which was rumored somehow.. I had a feeling it was gonna use Samsung’s Hummingbird since it is Samsung.. plus Hummingbird should be cheap these days.

I thought it was the second to include Drivesmart since the Galaxy S 4G includes it? (I think)

And I dislike the UI, but there’s always Launcher Pro.

This I know.. If they take 6+ months to get Galaxy S line completely updated (and that’s a device that is available worldwide), how long do you think they’ll take to get out a niche device that honestly, won’t sell that well?

Since it will come with Froyo does that mean it comes with a Mobile AP option for tethering? I really enjoy that function on my Galaxy tab but it would be nice to have that option on my phone [currently have a MyTouch Slide].

This is just a crap phone with a very old idea. It will not sell. Who the hell is making these lame decisions for T-Mobile? They need to come up with super phones to keep the big customers and the publicity pointing to the T-Mobile brand. This phone is laughable at most. Look at the ink that Verizon is receiving with the Thunderbolt… Get a superphone out there, advertise the hell out of it. Don’t wait to the last minute either or you will loose customers. Come on T-Mobile, what are you waiting for?????????????

    • Eric

Superphones like the LG 2x, HTC Pyramid, and various touchscreen Blackberries that will be coming out in the coming months?

    • Nardva

I agree. T Mobile needs a super phone. Or at least the perception of a super phone. Thunderbolt is nothing special from a specs stand point but the way Verizon markets it people want it.

    • Be Smart

We have the fastest phones on the market and we have some serious super phones like like Eric just mentioned. You talk about the thunderbolt and i am sorry to say this but you sound like one of uniformed customer who thinks they know everything but really have no idea what they are talking about. If you have done any research you would know that Verizon can not support voice calls on there LTE network and that is why they keep talking about how they will be doing VOIP and that it won’t be out till the later half of the year.

THE THUNDERBOLT will be their first LTE phone but not for 3 – 6 months so they can eat my ass cause out Network and phones will kill them in any test they have!!!! know what you are talking about before you run your mouth about T-Mobile.

Wow, this makes me really nostalgic, and I didn’t think I would ever care about a samsung device again, then again, it is a kick, and I used those up until my preordered G1 first came in. Gotta say, the keyboard looks pretty slick, and a sidekick with 21mbps HSPA+ and android sounds pretty solid. Now to find out if it’ll launch with gingerbread or froyo.

Hopefully T-Mobile markets the hell out of this thing so they can resurrect the line successfully and have a hit on there hands, they could use it.

      $429 I bet.

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

I could believe with the feature set. But, with T-Mobile I doubt it. They aren’t that expensive, but I can see this being $450. I would like to say $429 if you compare this to the Cliq 2, but idk. I think the Sidekick 3G was $400 MSRP, so I can see this between $400-450. But, $500 could be a possibility (highly doubt it, but you never know with T-Mobile).

  • http://www.twitter.com/Wicked_1 Wicked1

This will be pretty solid for the demongraphic its geared toward. Its not suppose to be a SUPER phone. Many of current SK users, those that are left, and some others will buy this phone. I won’t, but some will. Any idea how much memory is on-board?

    • Anonymous

no word on on-board memory yet

  • Ali

Cool but by the time this releases we will all be soaking up dual core glory. Well we can only hope for this since tmobile is moving kind of slow.

    • SoCalTeknique

Again with the Dual core crap. Tegra 2 isnt that much faster than the Hummingbird CPU/GPU. The iPad2′s A5 CPU destroys the Tegra 2. Sad but true and i dont like Apple. Maybe Android will dominate the CPU world next year but this year belongs to Apple.

      • AnonyMouse

You do realize that the A5 is actually a downgraded A9, and only clocks as a dual core 900ghz on the ipad 2. The claims made by apple are false (like usual). Most graphics are found to be only slightly faster, and not the 9x they claim.

  • SoCalTeknique

It looks like a Sidekick but its missing the 4-way Dpad/speaker combo, camera flash, swivel screen (although it may be patented by Sharp and Danger), track ball and LEDs but the Hummingbird CPU and Android makes up for it. Welcome back SK!

Actually, 1 site said there *was* an LED notification light (like the glowing trackball with Red/Blue/Green notifications) – article did not say where it was. looks like there are front and back speakers. and the dot on the far right is an OPTICAL TrackBall (like a round track-Pad – works well and no grit/grime can get under it like a physical trackball)

The Sidekick 4G is unfortunately not the first tmobile device to come with drive smart, so you need to check your sources. That’s also not what the press release states. It was the LG optimus to be the first T mobile device that it came pre loaded on. Correct, please.

i do agree that it not having a flash is bad considering the target demo, but the quality with cell phone flash photography is horrible. Seems nice, but here’s what you gotta ask. In two months when more android 3.0 devices are released, will this even get the time of day for an OS upgrade? History: mytouch series, vibrant.

    • Auser72

Everyone is not obsessed with updates. The majority of the population couldn’t tell you what a android, ios, or w7 is. If you are into high end cars, why complain about the performance and specs of mid line car? Because you have nothing better to do.

      • Anonymous

        very adequate analogy…

Had the SK3, I’m in my mid twenties and I am loving this new SK. Only thing is wish the screen was larger, like 3.8 inches. Also wished the front facing camera was 1.3 MP instead of VGA.

Ok, it’s obvious this device isn’t for everyone. People still complaining about super phones like they’ve failed to realized T-Mobile is about options & satisfying all of their consumer base, not just 1 part of their demographic. The smartphones are coming. Y’all act like the HTC Pyramid, & the LG Optimus G2x haven’t been “confirmed.” Hold your horses & they’ll be out. Stop dragging T-Mobile about the same comments as if they’re not getting super phones. The question or complaint isn’t that T-Mobile aren’t getting them, the question is when they’ll be announced. & considering CTIA is very near (start looking Monday March 21st) and the timeline of when they stated they’re expected, the announcements will be here soon.

    • Anonymous

“the question is when they’ll be announced”

I put all my negative thoughts on hold ever since MWC in hopes that CTIA will bring all the answers just like ATT and VZW did. If they don’t bring El Heat to Orlando then I’m going to $#!& all over T-Mobile.

I’m sorry but anyone who doesn’t think the myTouch 4G is powerful enough is an idiot. WTF do you people DO everyday that requires something that’s as powerful as what you’re complaining about not having?! It’s like getting rocket engines for a VW Rabbit!

      People and their status symbols…

The point of a Sidekick is not being on the bleeding edge of technology. You all act like the 1GHz Hummingbird processor is some kind of slouch. Gaming is still very good with it, and for what it is intended to do.. it will be more than adequate. This is a HUGE upgrade in specs for anyone that had a Sidekick LX 2009.
