Samsung Vibrant Froyo Update Coming January 21st, Tomorrow!

Wow, this is going to be like winning the lottery for Samsung Vibrant owners who have been up in arms over the holdup of Android 2.2 Froyo for the Vibrant.  It’s coming, tomorrow according to PCMag and T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman.  As with most updates, it will come in waves so not everyone will receive it on the first day.

Let me reiterate that point…NOT everyone will receive it on the first day.  It will be a staggered rollout.

So what was the holdup?  Purely technical says Brodman, not marketing, payment or sales.

“It was a quality control and timing issue,” Brodman said.  “The biggest challenge is integration and customization.”

Moving forward, T-Mobile will update all Android phones to new versions of the Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the new OS public.

Smartphone users expecting frequent upgrades is “new to us”, Brodman said, “and we’re going to have to step up and change the way we do things.”

Along with that, Brodman also mentioned the introduction of the 4G Galaxy S to be introduced at Mobile World Congress on February 13th.

Had a feeling this was coming as the latest leak included a new bootloader, which isn’t usually changed. Probably done to prevent bricks on upgrade.

anyone know if its possible to install this update manually? or its only OTA. i dont have service on my vibrant but has wifi.

    • Alvin B.

Keep an eye out on xda-developers, I’m sure a flashable update will be posted there within hours of OTA rollouts.

  • Surfcitydad

I wonder if you will be able to update with Kies mini, or will have to wait for OTA

    • Smylax

OTA. Last time people used kies they didn’t get the JI6 update.

      • Khulsey80

True but kies mini is specific tool to update US Vibrants. It’s what tmobile tells you to use if you never got the OTA. Original kies (International) would’nt allow JI6. I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to update through kies mini as samsung will likely want all of us to shut up about the 2.2 update.

Does anyone know if I’m disconnected will I get the update?

    • Smylax

If you’re disconnected no, you will not get the update.

    • Michael

If you’re asleep, will you be awake?

No, your phone will need to have signal and be turned on.

Ok, so the update is starting tommorow and could take a few weeks for everyone to get. So now my question is should i still root my phone and install the axura 2.2.7 ROM? Which from what I’ve seen is the best ROM out there thus far(if you know of a better one please let me know). Or should I just cross my fingers to get the update tommorow and avoid rooting? What would be the pros and cons of rooting ( I acknowledge i will void warranty) and the pros and cons for this long awaited OTA update.

    • Swoosh

You can alway unroot your device to a factory reset and install the update. It all depends on what you want. Do you want sammy with its bloatware or something custom made. I am running the axura rom right now and love it. To each his own tho…

Does anyone else find it at all interesting that now all of a sudden the update is ready for tomorrow??? When asked a week ago the said they had no clue when it would be available. It would be impossible for tmobile or samsung to lie about delaying the update because of the new phone they have coming out. Funny thing is now it’s coming out after they have officially comfirmed the vibrant 4g. I don’t care what anyone else says. I think all the things that came out this past week about them holding the update back was true

  • Flfny

Froyo is too little too late imo. Gingerbread is out for a little bit now. So how long till we get Gingerbread then? Oh I’m putting my money on January 2012. lol

Seriously though, if the skinning is stopping us from getting these updates 6 months after they come out then give us the option to install the update sans skin!

It’s DEFINITELY not like winning the lottery…. it’s more like someone FINALLY bringing you a roll of TP while you’re on the crapper.

    WE LANDED ON THE MOON!

Seriously, they waited this long to release an OS that is already outdated? Release it with 2.4 then it will actually be news.

  • Anonymous

It will be a limited roll out the peak of it will be on Sat 22nd into Mon 23rd, they will test the waters. It is expected to update fine. If no issues arise there will be a massive roll out the following weeks ahead.

  • Anonymous

Oh good grief, you could see this coming, people in here complaining that 2.2 is outdated. Tell me, in your simple way of thinking about things, on what do you base the statement that 2.2 is outdated? Because some devices have 2.3? Because there’s talk about Honeycomb?

With that logic anything electronic you buy today, LCD TV for example, is outdated because at CES the manufacturer had a concept device on display.

Just because there’s other Android versions being speculated about or discussed, or installed on a few devices does not mean 2.2 is outdated. What simplistic thoughts and comments.

Tell me know-it-alls, what exactly does the supposed up-to-date Android version you are referring to have compared to 2.2 that makes 2.2 outdated? What features? Be specific, please.

You do realize that 2.2 is on many, many current top-of-the-line models, that 2.1 is installed. And many are not getting 2.2

Sheesh… ask Google if you don’t believe me. They don’t consider 2.1 or 2.2 outdated.

You guys are a crackup and will complain about anything. I have even seen people complain that their G1s are not getting 2.2. LOL. Those same people are probably using Windows 3.1 and complaining that Microsoft won’t give then Win98, or WinME and that they can’t get XP.

Heck, if T-Mobile gave you free Nexus S with no contract obligation and a free year of unlimited data you would find something to beech about.

    • Smylax

I agree, EVERYTHING is a different expectation in the wireless industry. For example, customers always come in and say “I’ve been a loyal customer “x” number of years, (carrier) OWES me a phone.” Really? try going to your car dealer and saying “I’ve been making my payments on time for 5 years, you owe me a new car!” Or calling Comcast and telling them they owe you something. Customers need to get over themselves, NO company OWES you anything. Although I must say the wireless industry created these terrible customers by deep throating them for so many years. They’ve created a monster.

Uh WRONG! When I went to the store to purchase my vibrant, I was promised this update so yes . . . they OWE me 2.2!

        • clocinnorcal

Bravo, I spent $500 of my hard earned cash on this phone and also received a promise of a Sept 2.2 roll out. And then just repeated delays with half ass excuses.

        • Theref55

I did too jumping from the HTC TouchPro2 6 months into that phone. But that doesnt entitle me to anything past the purchase for any new releases. No one should be promising you anything when it comes to updates – especially in this field. Changes happen at a moments notice. Just because you were “promised” by a store clerk doesnt mean he is givng you the company line. You fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

2.3 has active Android-based active task and download management, as well as native support for NFC chips, multiple cameras and VoIP, motion and other sensors, sound mixing, as well as larger screens, such as those on tablets.

Also, having gone from a rooted, lag-fixed Vibrant to the Nexus S, it certainly feels a helluva lot faster. It’s also got a more intuitive feel to it, though that may be subjective.

      • Anonymous

Nice insight to 2.3. The problem though is the idiots who don’t know about any of that and bi@#h because their Firmware number is lower than someone elses. For real though thx for the insight.

I think the main issue is that people expect that they get the update immediately or w/in a reasonable amount of time. When Apple releases an upgrade it’s available immediately. I’m in no way saying Apple is better, but consumers expect updates at a reasonable time, can’t fault them for that.

Just In: I heard the FBI got involved, investigating the Samsung/T-Mobile conspiracy to increase Samsung Galaxy S 4G sales and that as a result the conspirators are hurriedly providing the update to end the controversy.

Seriously, in regards to my last comment, this update will motivate me to keep my Vibrant until Sept, at which time I will replace it with a dual-core, 8MP, 3.0 USB, 64 GB microSD slot, 4″, HDMI-out superphone. By then those specs will be commonplace.

cant wait, flash and wifi calling is mostly what I care about, I really don’t see anything that gingerbread brings to the table to be bitchin about not getting it, anyone ?? a great phone just turned into an awesome phone.
    cheers

    • Anonymous

I asked that ? at Phandroid.com and someone said this:

superior task management, which in turn gives a significant boost in battery life.
graphic changes that make everything look more uniform and less sporadic.
      built in task killer.
      increased speed.
AMAZING screen off animation (this is my favorite part)
detailed memory analysis available in the apps and memory section.
better compatibility with current, upgraded market.
all in all, not amazing, but fairly significant update.
i mostly feel bad for the people on the original galaxy who are still running 2.1 because we all know that the jump from 2.1 to 2.2 was a HUGE change.

  • TMOprophet

Congrats to Vibrant owners, you strong voice of dissent and discontent over lack of updates has yielded you all a small victory. Samsung is now trying to save face after massive public backlash and media spotlight being shown right on their crony practices. So good job to everyone who spoke up, and shame on everyone who tried to bury it. Although I wouldn’t get your hopes up for Gingerbread :)

Final message is that customers have power to get things done when you are willing to come together…good job

  • 4G_or_not_4G

Great news, I hope T-Mobile lives up to their commitment of 3 to 5 months. Google provides the upgrade for free, so there is no reason, why the manufacturers and carriers cannot/will not support a free upgrade to them. After all, if you try to gauge me for all my money (forcing me to buy new phones to get upgrades), I will look for someone who will take care of me. If you take care of me, and I am a happy customer, I will remain with that same carrier because I am a happy customer. Companies like LG/Samsung/Sony Ericsson/Motorola who have cell phone divisions in the black now because of Android, need to support the program all the way

  • http://twitter.com/willentrekin Will Entrekin

So, wooo, the Vibrant is getting an update to an OS it should have shipped with (because it was already out, then), to an OS that’s already a month out of date?

Sad, too. I’ve got a Nexus S now. The benefits of the Nexus S are the drawbacks of the Vibrant, and vice-versa. If only Samsung and Google would combine them into the Vibrus, or the Nexant, we might actually have the perfect phone. Gingerbread. FFC. Expandable SD memory. HD camera. LED camera.

That phone could legitimately claim superdom for, like, six months, at least.

Although not a VibraGoogle, because that would just be embarrassing.

  • Anonymous

This is good for Vibrant owners [myself included]. 3-5 month turnaround is also good for all of us. I wonder how the plan on implementing that. Will it be across the board or will some devices get first dibs over others when an update is ready to go? What u wanna bet Samsung devices will always be the last to go…lmao…okay let me stop. Lol. Seriously though, this still doesn’t stop me from switching to a different manufacturer whenever my contract is up.

@PimpStrong – lol. You know that was a pet peeve of mine…those HTC screens being somewhat ashy-looking. But I am yet to play with the MT4G to know what the screens look like now. Even the Evo looked ashy from what I remembered from a friend’s phone. S-AMOLED spoils ya! I am getting ready to do the Froyo update for my Vibrant over the Samsung Kies software. Hopefully I’ll like Samsung better…wish me luck! Lol..

Great news for average vibrant users. I’m currently running Nero v5 w/touchwiz from team whiskey and its 1000x better than anything samsung/tmobile put out. I waited as long a I could but it just took too long. I’m glad I caved in and joined the rom flashing crowd. I highly recommend it.

Sweet mother of monkey. Finally flashed my Rom with Nero from Team Whiskey, and the people who said it’s so much better/stable are NOT exaggerating!! Mind you, the only other device I tried to modify in this way was the iPhone a while back; I went to my friend’s office after-hours to use his computer to root it to work on Tmo’s network, and everything seemed to be going well until the step in the process where the screen was supposed to be green, but instead came up bright red. I distinctly remember screaming at my friend, “Abort! Abort!” and we tucked the imploding iPhone in a desk drawer, ran out of the office building and speeded off into the night. Because of that, rooting a phone made me ill at ease, but I caved in and am sooooo glad. God bless the XDA developers, for they are Demigods.

So I’m running the stock rom before ji6 via Odin flash with root and lagfix thanks to akaskriller.com(David ) Eugene373 and everyone that’s worked hard at bringing new life to these phones, if I want the ota should I undo lagfix, download ji6 unroot and wait or I’d there a different method involved. If the phone does not perform as fast as it does now or better then I’m switching back, flash didn’t work that great anyways when I had froyo, wifi calling not a big deal to me, just a fast and enjoyable phone that’s glitch free

    • Anonymous

If you ask me I wouldnt even bother trying out the Stock Rom. I mean you KNOW that an aftermarket ROM is better than a stock rom. But as far as reconfiguring to allow the stock update to 2.2 I believe if you have the JI6 unlagfixed and still rooted you should be fine.

      • ElKabong

@PimpStrong Totally agree. The benefit of having a “real” 2.2 out will get the community developers an opportunity to check out a few things. The custom roms will be superior and since I’m already rooted and running Nero, I’ll simply wait for another Nero update. No way will I take my amazing Vibrant back to stock and wait for an OTA update. But at least this might make some people happy now (doubtful). The whiners will continue to whine. The custom rom users will continue to enjoy the fruits of the community developers and try to convince the complainers to come join us. But unfortunately, most of the time it falls on deaf ears.

i feel like no one will get it today at all, they probably said they will release it today to shut all of us up and things were going out of control. I think the real plan is to release it like 1 1/2 week in to the upgrading period which started today. I don’t know, I just can’t believe anything they say anymore.
