Samsung Vibrant Froyo Update Coming January 21st, Tomorrow!

Wow, this is going to be like winning the lottery for Samsung Vibrant owners who have been up in arms over the holdup of Android 2.2 Froyo for the Vibrant.  It’s coming, tomorrow according to PCMag and T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman.  As with most updates, it will come in waves so not everyone will receive it on the first day.

Let me reiterate that point…NOT everyone will receive it on the first day.  It will be a staggered rollout.

So what was the holdup?  Purely technical says Brodman, not marketing, payment or sales.

“It was a quality control and timing issue,” Brodman said.  “The biggest challenge is integration and customization.”

Moving forward, T-Mobile will update all Android phones to new versions of the Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the new OS public.

Smartphone users expecting frequent upgrades is “new to us”, Brodman said, “and we’re going to have to step up and change the way we do things.”

Along with that, Brodman also mentioned the introduction of the 4G Galaxy S to be introduced at Mobile World Congress on February 13th.

okay, i must be dead. a galaxy s update? coming? for real? in the united states?

so i guess i’m just to assume that world peace, no more hunger, universal healthcare, and flying pigs will be coming today as well?

    • Johnml2008

Might want to take an umbrella in case there are flying pigs out there….it could get messy

Yeah, I have a year old bold and am waiting on the latest 5.0 upgrade. Forget about 6 that AT&T and Verizon have pushed. This is a joke!

Mighty interesting timing, that they are announcing the update mere days after all the uproar and conspiracies regarding the LONG delay for said update.

I suspect that if the uproar had not occurred we would not be seeing this update so soon /moreconspiracies

I like the sound of that as well, true or not. Maybe they will change their requirements on their upcoming phones to make them more easy to update. Especially after this Galaxy S 2 nightmare.

Well my brother will be glad to know that he will soon be able to view Flash video directly on websites soon finally. His punk @$$ wouldn’t root his Vibrant.

      Galaxy S 2.2* nightmare

    • Anonymous

Yes, that was good to see that maybe T-Mo will learn from all this. It’s certainly a better statement than the one Moto put out yesterday.

  • Petey

I’m not excited until I see that update is on my phone and How long do I have to wait for the next update after this?

  • T-MobileCEO

Haha oh you Samsung fanboys… Does anyone know how long it took for the MT3G to even get an update and you guys are all crying because you’ve been on the same update since July.

Get over it and deal with it or get a new phone.

    • Neok182

when the MT3G launched, neither HTC or T-Mobile promised any update past 1.6. When that update was announced it was more of a nice gift considering HTC and Google said many times that the MT3G/G1 would never get android 2.

The Galaxy S phones were released with samsung and all the providers saying they would be updated to 2.2 as soon as possible. Then all the euro versions got updated, and all the major motorola and htc devices got updated, including the MT3G. All while we just keep hearing the same thing over and over again about the Galaxy S, there are “issues” with the update. But if so then why does it work perfectly in europe but not in the US.

assuming this is actually happening, it’s a sign that t-mobile is at least doing the right thing, but until samsung releases a device and updates it within 1-2 months of the new version of android being released i still don’t trust them.

I’m wondering this too BC. I hope it fixes the lag and has GPS improvements.

  • for those of you on the other side of the spectrum sending an OTA is not as easy as hitting a button. 50K things go wrong and takes a while to fix it. The last thing u wanna do is send an OTA w/a bug and then have 50M ppl complaining about that bug online like if there wasn’t any more important things to life than being able to save Apps to your SD card. FROYO IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE MUCH ON YOUR VIBRANTS LITTLE ONES, and its sure as hell not gonna give u a front facing camera or HSPA+. So sorry for those of you who got Vibrants and like David said do NOT expect to get OTA tomorrow. Consider yourself lucky if you do but if u don’t, it could be easily a month or 3 months b4 you get it so don’t get your panties twisted

So about that Nexus One and G2 to Gingerbread 2.3 update Mr. Brodman…

    • Neok182

Nexus Device updates are handled by google, t-mobile has nothing to do with those. The nexus s is getting a fix for the SMS bug this week, and the Nexus One is suppose to be getting gingerbread by the end of february.

The G2 on the other hand is an HTC device so it’ll be up to HTC and T-Mobile how that goes. Most likely HTC is focusing on updating their sense devices to 2.3 first, but since the G2 is a semi-stock android device it should get an update within the next 2-3 months.

      • bmg314

Betcha 100 monopoly bucks the G2 gets it before any other HTC device in the states. AND I’ll double that bet to cover the fact that it happens by the middle of March. ;)

The cries were getting too loud for Tmobile/Samsung. They better release it already. There was so much “samsung boycott” talks everywhere. Now this high-end samsung device will be up to date with the majority of current Android phones.

I’m not even bothering dreaming about 2.3. I know they won’t update it to this in my lifetime. Let’s just be happy we got 2.2.

Wifi calling, wifi hotspot, slightly modified UI, some new bloatware, Avatar 2, TV Everywhere, Avatar 3, a Galaxy Tab, retinal eye recognition, forward facing camera, iTunes App Store access, olympic gold medal… well maybe the first four.

I was chatting with T-mobile online support personal about this update and they are still giving out the standard statement that the release date is not yet available. This makes me doubt if the push is going to happen tomorrow.

He’s the CMO. Which means that’s what management is planning (though I’d be more likely to trust the chief operations officer with info of this sort), and it’s probably the corporate plan, but whether it carries through is actually more along the service side of things.

In other words, it’s like Intel head honchos announcing a new chip. Sure, that’s the company plan, but until that chip is being assembled by the actual workers on the actual plant floor, that chip is still vapor.

Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November after stating “SOON” back in JULY (4 months is not soon folks, 4 days is SOON) and now T-mobile after being forced to speak-up that they have had it for over 7 weeks. Guess CUSTOMER angry postings got their attention to lie some more, wifi calling has been out for a very LONG time at XDA (keeping with their model not to say the specific amount of time). FIRE THIS GUY and maybe Management will wake-up, if it does not hurt, put fear in the folks deciding, they will not do anything until it effects them. If we keep protesting MAYBE heads will roll and they will stop treating customers so poorly.

Definition of “soon” (adverb) = not long after the present time; quickly. BTW, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened.
