Will The Sidekick Ever Make A Comeback?

I know we could be reading entirely too much into this but when pinged last night on Twitter with a question regarding the future of the Sidekick line, @tmobile gave the above response. They could have answered in a million ways some of which would have raised suspicion and others which would have hinted that there are no current plans to continue the Sidekick line. So I stand by the notion that we could be reading far to much into this but its an interesting answer that at least in context seems to give a glimmer of hope that the Sidekick line isn’t dead and will be resurrected in one form or another.

What was thought at once to be the Project Emerald phone, as we know turned out to by the myTouch4G. We haven’t heard a peep about the rumored “Sidekick Twist” in months but perhaps it’s time we do a little more digging.

Sidekicks are old news now. They were always toys and there are newer and better toys now available.

    • Elias

      Yes, like the iPhone.

    • Tito!

Lmfao. You know nothing about gadgets.
Sidekick was nice. The best, for T-Mobile way back when!
There’s nothing like resurrecting a simple device.
Put Android on that baby, and there’s no way it wouldn’t sell. :)

  • Wilma Flintstone

I’d like to see the sidekick to burst back on the scene with the fresh new Meego OS and a 4.3-4.5 inch Amoled or better screen, (optional keyboard – possibly detachable), expandable SD Card slot, TV out (HDMI), Ffc, 5mp cam or better with Xenon Flash and Night Mode, light for ffc videocalling in dark areas, at least 16gb internal HDD space with ability to store apps directly to sd card and at least a 2000mah battery.

That would be too big just imagine how fat and unpocketable that crap you described will be. 4.3 or 4.5 screen that kicks out? What the hell is so great about Meego? BTW if the keyboard is detachable then its no longer a sidekick.

      • Wilma Flintstone

Actually 4.3-4.5 would be perfect as far as size for me. The HD2 I’m typing this on now fits in my pocket great. I think they can answer more of your question than I can as far as what is so good about Meego:

        forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=731

put “www” in front because Disqus won’t let me post a link. Also, check out the Intel Moorestown Meego Tablet on Youtube. It’s running an early version of Meego and is looking fantastic already. Most people misquote me and think that I don’t like Android because I keep asking for Meego stuff but I think Android is a great OS with lots of potential that has definitely contributed greatly to the smartphone evolution. I just know what Meego is and how much more powerful it is than Android and would like to try it out.

        • Anonymous

4.3-4.5 is already huge and when you put that in sidekick form factor thats gonna be even bigger and possibly fat. So from that forum what I am seeing is that MeeGo is said to be better because its a True Linux Distro of which means higher developer base and flavors f linux that could be compatible with every device. It seems as it has so much potential but I don’t think MeeGo is really going to take off this year if its released this year that is.

Meego won’t catch on in the US.. Nokia nevers has.. so it’ll be a wise choice to put Android 2.3 Gingerbread on here to get rid of that crap SK OS.

      • Wilma Flintstone

Can you give me the future lottery numbers too?

I agree about getting rid of the SK OS though.

Well from the sounds of it, its more customizable than android but it won’t catch on is the US for at least 2012 is what I think. Android is too popular for Meego to catch on in 2011.

  • Pantlesspenguin

I used Sidekicks for about 3 years and loved them…but I don’t think I’d ever get another one. So many of the Sidekick faithful have moved on.

  • Anonymous

I think Voltron should come back. A new Sidekick would be somethin like the PSPhone or a dual screen slider with a D-pad. If they took the body of an origional style sidekick and made it a little slimmer and slapped Gingerbread on it then I would expect nothing less than failure. Look at the KIN.

    • Anonymous

You can’t compare the KIN with the SIdekick they are nowhere even close to the same thing. Only thing they both have in common is that microsoft killed both devices.

The sidekick was a damn good looking device especially the LX’s and Carbon editions if they slapped gingerbread it would surely sell because of two things. Form factor and Nostalgia. No doubt people loved the sidekick and they still do and it offers the best keyboards.

I guarantee if T-Mobile took the Sidekick Lx and got stock android 2.3 it would sell.

      • Anonymous

Nostalgia only leads to sales to a smaller group of people. Although the KIN was completely different than the Sidekick, it showed the difficulty of resurrecting a teeniebopper phone.

        • Anonymous

          I will agree there.

If you look at this it is indeed a test to see if they still have fanbase for the Sidekick. If they get enough people interested still in the Sidekick it could make a comeback. I believe what lead to the discontinuation in the first place is that after that data outage people began to leave for Blackberry & Android. It caused a problem in sales after the data was restored in which now it wasnt selling enough. So it was decided to discontinue than rather continue with it. The data outage really left a bad omen on the people interested in the device and people who once trusted in the device which could no longer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlieboy808 Charlie Kealoha Criscola

I wanted nothing more than a Sidekick in the past. I had them from the first Color all the way to the last 2009 LX and I will say this, yes the Sidekick line was heavily fan based, but there is reason for it. The keyboard was and is still the best keyboard I have ever used on a phone. The cloud based technology that it used was revolutionary for it’s time. The fact that I had the $20 Sidekick plan forever kept the pricing great for me. What killed it was Microsoft trying to test something out and failing at it. I honestly think they just bought the company took it’s technology and purposefully killed it with a “server issue.” Andy Rubin was with Danger Technology and now is with Android. It was no contest why I’d choose Android over anything else, but now that they don’t have a big say in manufacturing the phones. The great keyboard may never come back but I hope some day it does.

All this talk about it and I just realized that the Sidekick could be anything to T-Mobile considering they just own the name “Sidekick.” It could very well end up just being a basic messaging phone. We will never be able to see another HipTop device ever again. Sharp attempted to make something for AT&T with their left over parts I guess and that flopped.

Thanks Microsoft for screwing something else up. You guys rock!

  • Red

I’d love to see them make a comeback. The sidekick 3, iD, and the first sidekick LX had better keyboards than any phone out today. The G2′s keyboard is nice but it’s no replacement.

    • Anonymous

Of course the Sidekick has the best keyboard, its a sidekick. Although I would love for the next sidekick to be an android.

They should bring it back with gingerbread, glasses free 3D and HSPA+ and call it MySidekick3D

      • http://www.facebook.com/MatthewSki Matthew Kalinowski

what would the point of a 3d screen be there would be like no support for it because 3d hasn’t fully caught on yet

        • Anonymous

Future proof, the same reason people want dual cores in androids even though android hasn’t been optimized for it yet. Plus there are going to be glasses free 3D devices by sharp this year. I agree 3D is pretty much a gimmick but ayy why not have it?

    • Wilma Flintstone

I’d have to disagree and say that the Touch Pro 2 has the best keyboard. Sidekicks keyboards were nice but they can’t compare to the Touch Pro 2 keyboard.

      • Anonymous

Hands down agree with you Mrs. Flintstone

  • Mdellab1

Seems like the sidekick line paved the way for smartphones in todays world. There isn’t anything I do on my android devices that I couldn’t do on my sidekick (minus Flash and a few select apps). Will they come back? I have a better question: Do they need to?

I will absolutely agree about the keyboard though. It was and continues to be one of the best phone keyboards around.

  • Tyrone M Jackson

Rather than put out yet another phone, I’d like to see T-Mobile simply support the phones out there. How many Android phones has T-Mobile released in the last year which it’s been bleating “2.2 soon” about and dropped the ball on? A huge number. They’ve been saying “soon” about the myTouch 3G Slide for 6 months now, and all I want is for the phone to route calls over WiFi & allow apps to be installed on the SD card instead of the Slide’s paltry internal storage, both deficiencies rectified in 2.2. Then I’d be happy. Google’s generic 2.2 runs on all of these phones, making clear the holdup in T-Mobile pushing out Android updates is due to T-Mobile bloatware & T-Mobile not putting any resources into updates, not fundamental hardware compatibility issues.

    • jcj

T-Mobile does not control upgrades for phones, google and their manufacturers do

But you gotta think though. Why is it that Verizon and Sprint get more timely updates than t-moble devices from the same manufacturer.

I was just thinking about this the other day….I haven’t heard a sidekick twist rumor in a while and it got me thinking it would never come. I know the above tweet doesn’t mean anything, but the idea of a 4in sidekick running android and a twist out keyboard just makes my day. It will OBVIOUSLY have its own “sidekick” overlay on top of android, but i’m interested in how t-mobile plays this. (if they do at all)

  • Tito!

    Yay! They’ve finally mentioned it.
I’ve been anticipating this phone since the rumor first started

    On another note,
the other day I came up with this great idea.
What if TMobile came out with sidekicks with BB, Android, WP7 .
    They could be called:
Sidekick Twist, Sidekick Berry, and Sidekick 7 or something.
    That would be interesting :)

Neither Motorola nor HTC because if its moto on tmobile its low end and if its HTC the build quality is probably going to be horrible. Well HTC did do good with the G2 but I would rather see Danger be resurrected or maybe LG.

  • http://twitter.com/Lawless_1 Lawless_1

Tmobile could of sold out and got the Motorola Flipout and rebranded it as a sidekick and it would have sold a lot more than the Charm did. Motorola has had a sidekick before….. remember the sidekick slide?

    • Anonymous

Yeah but the sidekick slide wasn’t all that great.

  • nec

the sidekick is dead but that doesnt mean sidekick wont team up with android to make a phone and motorola and sidekick dont go together remember the sidekick slide horrible

    • Deff

i loved my sidekick slide. It was my favorite phone. Too many people didn’t understand the point of sidekicks though. It was before anyone ever dreamed of unlocking an iphone for tmobile. And besides the fact that there were literally no android phones out yet, although the G1 was coming. However, the sidekick series was great in my opinion. Still the best keyboard I have ever had was on my slide, and I now have a cliq (great upgrade huh? -_-) Anyways, the real point of this comment was to say that you could customize themes for you sidekick that NO other phone could do. I forget the exact website, but you can make your own themes for your sidekick and it was boss as hell. Other than that, the sidekick was one of the few internet phones out that wasn’t a blackberry. And lets face it, not everyone wanted a blackberry. So while it did succeed for a while, I think an android sidekick would be defeating the point of even calling it a sidekick anymore. Hence the creation of the MT3G slide. Which was also a “fail”

      • Anonymous

Android has much more customization than the sidekick. An android would NOT defeat the purpose of a sidekick. Sidekick was all about the form factor. The swivel screen was awesome, I remember wanting one back in the day. It was the best thing around.

  • DeathStarKiller

the only thing decent about the Sidekick was the hardware….. the OS was pure and utter junk. but it would be cool to see the sidekick hardware running Android. i would buy that. But Sidekick as we knew it is finally dead thanks to Microsofts magic batch files they sent out to every handset a couple years ago. remember when all the sidekicks were down. no contacts, etc? it suspiciously happened after microsoft acquired sharp and the theory i microsoft killed off the sidekicks so windowsphone7 would have less competition. then again, who knows for sure.

    • Xpbest

Microsoft always dirty business! and crew too

    • LX09-User

microsoft didn’t acquire sharp, they bought Danger.

Either way their acquirement of that company led to the downfall of the sidekick.

it would be cool if it ran on andriod with less bloatware as possible considering I have the G2 im loathing the fact can’t delete finance, amazon mp3, (most sidekick users were deaf so the amazon MP3 would be almost pointless to have if deaf users were once again appealed to the new andriod aidekick) I would want a keyboard like epic also a front facing camera.. remove photobucket as well so basically requesting to have the option to remove what users do or dont want and not having to root for that reason having stock ims for different clients (g2 doesn’t have that have to download from marketplace data plan should be cheaper for deaf users once again… part of the reasons most peopple sticked with the sidekick was 29.99 for years before micosoft pull the plug I could go on with the list but ive already said too much

honestly i would like to see it stay dead.

it was a stupid phone and does not need to come back. if it does, i hope its something totally different i dont see a need for another keyboard phone we already have the g2 and its a pretty good phone….

  • Deff

The thing is, if they do make a new sidekick, it won’t be anything special. The only reason anyone WOULD buy it is because it’ll be branded with the wonderful “Sidekick” name. If you ask me, it is a waste of time. Give it HSPA+, 8 meg camera, dual LED flash, Flash player, a nice processor, Android OS, FFC and maybe I’ll be interested. Until then I say never again to any phone with a keyboard. They’re so obsolete anymore with the introduction of SWYPE. Anyone can text without a slide out now. Anyways, trying to bring back the sidekick would be as pointless as someone trying to rewrite the bible so everyone could understand it. Some things, are better just left alone.

    • Magenta Magic

Um… they have rewritten the Bible, and it seems quite successfully, too. LOL But I get what you’re trying to say, and I agree with you. Let the SK stay down, don’t zombie it!

i think the same screen on the mytouch 4g would be the best size to have with the sidekick 5-row keyboard. IMO 4″ would start making things too big to fit comfortably in your pocket.

i don’t think we would be that lucky to have an android sidekick that has the same signature swivel screen. Danger patented that design, so i would think microsuck has it now. Danger contracted with sharp to build the phones that Danger designed.
i would think microsoft greedy enough to make them use WP7 if they wanted to use the physical design aspects that made sidekicks so recognizable.

Though the Slide wasn’t a bad phone, once the battery thing was fixed I liked it.
The slide mechanism on the screen was great, and the keyboard was just as good as the bigger one even though it was smaller.

    • http://twitter.com/Knownoutcast Black/ #NT

I thought Sharp had the design patent since they were the handset manufacturers but I could be wrong. I don’t see why Sharp couldn’t team up w/ Android to make a nice sidekick. TMO owns the name so they could possibly cut out Microsoft/Danger.

  • Hugo Stiglitz

The previous sidekicks have not been too bad in terms of features but it’s always lacked WIFI. People are saying they wanna see front facing cameras, 5 mp cameras, dual core processors but seem to be forgetting that sidekick’s always lacked WIFI, If the next sidekick doesn’t have that simple feature then it’s a waste of time to release another model no matter what other features they want to include. I can see another sidekick in the works for the new year, but more than likely it will have a sidekick flavor of windows phone 7. if they price it well it can be a hit among its demographic.

    • HisTreatness

I imagine the reason they never had Wi-Fi is that the phone would only function as a glorified texting machine without access to the Danger servers. You can’t get your address book or anything, because that was stored on the servers. This is also why, likely, the phones have never been relaunched. T-Mobile dropped MILLIONS of dollars cleaning up the mess that Microsoft/Danger created when those same servers crashed and all SK users lost their information, address books….EVERYTHING….for a solid month. They had bill credits galore during that.

Anyway, If you had Wi-Fi it would not guarantee access to those servers, so they left it out. I would lay money that if they do re-launch Sidekick that it will not have that feature, simply based on the platform.

    • Anonymous

EVERY Android has the Wifis, if its an android its guaranteed wifi. Otherwise we should get free 3G because thats ultimately forcing you to buy their service and thats not umm… ethical.

Keep the keyboard and the keyboard shortcuts & the 4 corner buttons. Make it Android. Grandfather old rate plans! Can Slide or Swivel, but Swivel is better. Touchscreen, shoulder buttons, video chat, deaf-friendly apps, 4G! Easily port data from older sidekicks, tmail accounts transfer, Enterprise support (free), Social apps (free), Unlimited Data plans, tethering, Lots of memory, wifi, Google Voice, Same AIM, Threaded Texting, more Tmail MBs, Facebook Chat, Adobe Flash, Netflix-ready, more than 2 choices for case color, same Copy&Paste, same AutoText, updated hidden Snowboard game (including the Christmas Trees in December), TouchPad instead of TrackBall (in addition to TouchScreen)

  • Jebigego

i would think that the new sidekick would have to be done by Motorola just because Sidekick was the first to offer the whole social networking idea on a phone….so if Moto does it would have to contain motoblur but very low key like the Droid X…but then you run into the problem of it being the new “Cliq”…so the Sidekick might have to stay dead cause its hard to revive it without copying something thats already out there

  • Sk8man53

considering how we have a department devoted to creating the new sidekick right now i’d say it’s a pretty good bet we’re getting one soon. looks like it will be running an android os with a sidekick overlay. probabally launching late feb early march i wasnt able to pull any real stats from the source but its coming soon and should actually be a pretty decent phone

  • Riopato

sidekick is finished. Microsoft made sure of that when they bought Danger and ended up with the Kin which was far from being successful.
putting an overlay isn’t going to change the fact that any version of sidekick will be just another smartphone and will never live up to anything that Danger has designed in the past. The sidekick line is dead imo. It was the blackberry of teens and twenty-somethings and the series will never regain it’s popularity the way Danger made it.
What will be interesting is that the average consumer won’t know the difference between the sidekick and Android qwerty phones. It will ironically de-value the higher end phones like the G2, Vibrant and the upcoming Nexus S just out of consumer ignorance.

First thing first hspa+, amoled or better screen, 4inch is the best size for a phone, dualcore or same processor as the mt4g, front face camera, 8mp rear camera LED flash, 720p or 1080p video recording. 16gb on board memory, expandle sd slot, trackpad, GINGERBREAD ANDROID OS!!!!!! wifi/bluetooth
running android of course, could start on 2.2 with upgrading to 2.3 later
same overall body with the four corner buttons shoulder buttons and bottom buttons
    trackpad instead of ball
    same nice keyboard

I would peg it to be around $70-$100 on contract. Now THAT I would be all over.

IMO that screen resolution is way off, the last SK was 854×480 @ 3.2″. its gotta at least be that much, IMO at least 3.5 or so.
