Motorola Charm Available Now, No UMA Located

The Motorola Charm, that QWERTY little Motorola phone is now available in your choice of Golden Bronze or Cabernet. You can have it with a 3-megapixel camera, MOTOBLUR and all for a lovely little price of $74.99. Unfortunately, no sign of UMA has been found even so our leaked slide had given us a shred of hope. Our prayers for T-Mobile’s first UMA Android device remain and hopefully they shall be answered soon.

I’ll get this one for my wife; her birthday is next week.

    • JoshL

      don’t know if that’s a good idea….. this is definitely a pre-teen device, IMO.

      • sorandkairi

my wife isnt a “techie” she wouldnt care but i wanted to introduce her into “the world of android” so giving her this device couldnt hurt….. she’s upgrading from the nokia nuron and the old bb curve so…. i think that she will be fine

    • pantlesspenguin

Wouldn’t your wife still need “adult” features that this lacks? As far as I’ve seen, this doesn’t even have a calendar. I may be mistaken, though. It wouldn’t be the first time :).

      • sorandkairi

well….. i would be able to answer the question but unfort. i dont really know what constitutes “adult” features… what the ability to look at porn maybe? idk, :)

  • Jordan (Cincinnati)

Now that thing is out..maybe moto can focus on 2.1 for cliq and xt now for a change. I dont want to root but im starting to see no other option

    • Scott B

Doing the 1.5 root on the CLIQ (http://bit.ly/8YtVvF) helps noticeably, as you can essentially uninstall the bloatware that bogs down what spare power is available.

That said, I caved and got a new phone. Started with the Vibrant, was severely disappointed after just 2 days, and settled on the functionally superior Slide.

So there’s at least one rooted CLIQ on Craigslist now… ;-)

  • Rob

Yea my wife knows very little about phones, but thanks to me she will be getting the G2 for her birthday by the end of Sept

    • sorandkairi

im not, with my luck and hers, she’ll lose it or break it

  • bob

cliq and xt will be have 2.1 very soon. internal testing is going on now.

  • Andrew

I honestly doubt anyone who reads the news on this site would buy a Charm or cares to much for that matter. Since most of us know there is better to come and actually research phones.

    • sorandkairi

most ppl dont research phones… but i just said that i would get this android device for my wife so…… there are still reasons for everything

  • Rell

This isn’t a bad idea you take the craze everyone has about blackberries and you make android phone for people who like blackberries. This isn’t the phone for me tho

    • sorandkairi

not for me either , but my wife loves the “feel” of blackberries so this phone, at least for now would be a “good” fit for the time being (not tryin to buy a really expensive phone for her)

      • Andrew

I did state people who read news on this site or phone news sites. People who read news daily about their phone generally research their phone and look for what to buy. It’s not a bad entry phone or for someone who doesn’t care about specs. Most people on the news sites who read the daily stuff care about specifics.

      • sorandkairi

“most ppl dont research phones… but i just said that i would get this android device for my wife so…… there are still reasons for everything”

OK i understand what you are saying and arent really disagreeing with on in so……..

1.) why reply in the 1st place when i basically agreed with you to be honestly just stating that there are almost always exception, giving in example… mine!

2.) why didnt you reply to the comment that you were refering to rather than another one that doesnt refer to your comment…..

sorry just seemed kinda strange so im just asking………

  • Mr MN

I see all this talk about the Cliq and XT being upgraded to 2.1. What happened to the promised update for us myTouch 3G users? I remember seeing an article that said something about HTC’s “no phone left behind” promise, but it has been months and still no word about it. I guess that’s it for us. I rooted my phone (original myTouch 3G without the 3.5mm jack) but the phone can’t run any other roms without being painfully slow. I’ve tried sense, stock 2.1, and 2.2 but they’re all slow. I guess I’ll have to move on to the 3G slide or just wait for the G2.

    • sorandkairi

Well… i have the original as well as one of my phone and i have been awaiting on that update as well…..

With that being said… the update is supposed to occur relatively soon, supposed to be either by the end of this month or early in sept……supposed to!

  • pimpstrong

Its funny how this phone can come out running 2.1 but their other similar phones can’t get updated. Its as if the internals of the previous phones are so alien that its nearly impossible…?

  • Otto

I just ordered it off contract; as always excellent service from the rep over the phone. I still don’t understand the people that think this is a kiddie device. It definitely has some bonuses for the price (802.11n, Gorilla Glass, Cortex processor, nice amount of ram). I don’t know of any other carrier that will sell you an unlocked Android phone that’s shipping with a version in the 2.0 range for such a low price. Here’s to hoping we get Froyo and avoid the Moto curse.

    • Otto

P.S. Customer service rep asked me, “are you a forum nerd?”

      • David

In what response to what question?!

      • Otto

I was just the first person who ordered one from her today, she told me she uses Android and asked me why I wanted the Charm. I told her a bit about the features and she asked me if I was a “forum nerd” and laughed. She thinks for the price it’s going to do pretty well and told me there’s going to be a lot of options between now and December when I mentioned I wanted to save my upgrade.

    • sorandkairi

      hey Andrew, lookie here…..

      • Andrew

:) Why are you buying a phone now if you’re going to upgrade? Just curious.

      • sorandkairi

        As Drake would say,……..

        he has money to blow……

      • ob18

Better things to blow money on other then an expensive “door stopper”

      • sorandkairi

        @ob18

then it would be purposefully purchase, thus not “blowing” money…..

      • sorandkairi

        and these are expensive doorstops…..

for those who dont know motorola updated their update schedule, and the cliq and xt will be upgraded late Q3/early Q4,thanks god i ditched my xt for he mytouch 3g slide, now im looking at the mytouch hd :)

  • pimpstrong

I say its a nice little phone for what it is. Lots of teens will scoop this thing up and text till their hearts content just like TMO is showing on their new commercial for unlimited family texting. Smoov moov TMO. Next is the powerhouse phone that will FINALLY be in direct competition with the QWERTY Droid/Droid2. HTC better launch that sucker with FroYo on board with as much time as they have left untill launch.

  • Bimmerz

This is kind of a cute looking phone (it’s not the phone for me), looks almost like BB and Cliq hooked up one night, and then 9 months later – this was their result. ;)

    • pantlesspenguin

      LMAO!!!!! I love it!

  • Cassie

Actually…it DOES have UMA and I’m buying it today =)

    • Cassie

KK I was wrong. Well, atleast the rep I spoke to was wrong. It has hotspot, not UMA. According to the store reps manager, they are trying to put it onto Android Devices, or atleast looking into doing an update, but no guarantees. They said the G2 is suppose to have it, but we shall see about that. THis entire thing is getting very frustrating. BUT I DID LEARN OF A NEW APP . That does wifi calling. We’ll see about that to. Gonna switch back over to my Cliq and try it out. *gulp*

  • tmonewsreader

I actually I bought one yesterday love it…..yeah it is not a vibrant, droid, iphone class phone but it fits what I need. So there ARE people who read this site and research and still bought the phone…..

  • http://homotechual.net Homotechual

I ordered the phone, Coming from a Bold, Nexus and a Vibrant I needed a device that took the funcionality of Android and put it in a Bold. Who cares if it’s not high end it does what it needs to do for me until December, and when December hits I will choose between the G2, MyTouch HD, The Moto Android Phones, and freakin Windows 7.

  • JSY581

Just picked it up to give it a try, surprised to find that this is the FIRST Android phone that successfully was able to sync to my work email. I’m a crackberry to android “convert” so this feels right to me.

  • soviet$ever

i have nexus one, n900 but this phone caught my eye. picked it up on monday, was first to get this at local store, so far its great. its fast, some apps dont work properly because of the screen. yeah only one complaint is the screen resolution.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sopaopa sopa

I will be getting this phone for my niece, it be nice starter android for her. I will be using it for like a month before giving it to her though lol I will be getting the G2 for myself when that comes out, also I may get me the MyTouch HD.

  • mindo

This is an awesome phone and it has good specs. Don’t let the marketing for kids put you off, it is actually the first real android for bus types since it has the bb form factor that the android wolrd has ignored for 2 years, presumably to deny any credibility to the bbs success. We can do it better with g1 slider, moto slider etc. Well sliders suck, this is the right form factor for bus users.

Could use a higher res screen, flash for cam, but otherwise solid device.

    • J-Hop2o6

like everyone else been wondering (not me since i don’t want this phone),, UMA(lite)?

    • J-Hop2o6

nvm.. i read Cassie’s comment above:

Here is the problem about unofficial sites and forums. The Charm doesn’t have UMA but all these people seem to think it does, but ittttt wait for it…DOES NOT have UMA.

  • Awatt

From what I was told by our Moto Rep. UMA (the hardware) is there in place on the phone. T-mobile just doesn’t want to release until all the bugs in the software are fixed. So possible software OTA.
