Samsung Behold II Update Rolling Out OTA Style

Behold 2 fans, this is a moment you have been waiting for, an OTA update to your beloved Samsung Behold 2. It may not be all that you have wanted, nor all that you asked for but Samsung is making good with at least a number of the additions some of you requested. With Google Maps, Google Voice Search, Swype and a host of bug fixes and “usability updates,” it just might breathe some new life into your phone. Perhaps we can call off the lawsuits now?

  • manny

    luks like samsung forgot about us so we are going to forget about buying their phones);

  • TMOprophet

I refuse to do a factory reset, unless they guarantee me the update immediately, I can live with 1.5 till christmas..then its HTC Vision time…Never getting a Samsung phone ever fricking ever again. When it comes to Samsung products…get a TV…Cause I actually really like my 46in LED TV, although the internet and UI setup on it kinda sucks, def could use some Android loving. I wonder if anyone has hacked samsung’s TVs with different ports or anything..I know off topic..sorry…but yeah screw samsung phones and screw this never happening update too. PS message to SAMSUNG..” Screw you guys…I’m going home..”

  • TMO Orginal

I recived the update, but i have to say over all my experiance with the Behold 2 has been very disapointing. I don’t hate the phone, but I do not love it either.

I’ll go back to to HTC when i’m done with this phone.

One thing I do like is that I can cancel my Tele-nav subscription with the updated Google Navi.

    • dwayne

how do you get the update or when did you get it

  • miguel

Ooook…still havent gotten it wtf?? (Also never buying samsung phone ever again..)

  • TMOprophet

OK so I tried forcing the update as I have read about, by using Anycut to start device management. I get the little arrows for a few seconds and then luck, it worked for someone, but no me. This whole BH2 crap has been like Tmobiles biggest failure to support or even care about customers who got lied to by samsung and now apparantly being lied to by Tmobile themselves. Update to roll out 22-25th from 11pm-6am… ass…bunch of crap…seriously might cancel my service over this..Im close….unless they can correct the situation

  • Jeremy

Hey to all Behold 2 owners!
Write an email to the president’s office of T-Mobile.
I got a free upgrade as a result. This is sufficient. You can sell your behold at list or a little less. Get it while you can!

    • Alejandro

How do i do that. It sounds interesting

      • Jeremy

Sent a strongly worded email to these email addresses with my phone number and got a response in one day!,,,

      • TMOprophet

I just sent one too, although I tried to be polite, but still convey my concerns about the BH2. I’ll let ya know what happens if anything

      • Jeremy

Absolutely… Don’t be insulting. Make clear And logical accusations that you were sold a phone that was described as being upgrade beyond 2.0. You can get other things too from what I’ve read.

  • Jacob

When is Android 1.6 supposed to be pushed to the Behold II pile o crap?

    • Jeremy

Was supposed to be pushed last week. I still haven’t recieved it.

  • Nicole

I got the update on the 25th of june and it crashed my phone. first I had no reception or internet. after being on the phone with t mobile for hours they master reset my phone and then it completely froze my phone and now you cannot do anything. they are sending me a new phone :)

  • John

I also received the update, and installed it and now cannot get on wireless networks (Wifi) and the phone always says no reception. I did a factory reset (from the settings menu) and still have both problems. I am going to try to find an image online and see if I can reset everything that way.

  • TMOprophet

Well I finally got my update this morning around 10am. But it didnt just pop up, I woke up and tried starting Device management again, and withing a few seconds it told me there was an update available., this is done by using anycut to create a shortcut right to DM. However I cant guarantee it will work cause I tried it like a million times before I went to bed the night before and didnt get me anywhere.. SO something else has to happen in combination with doing this..and Im not sure what the other part is???? Maybe just lucky? Anyway, took about 11-12 minutes to fully complete, so far no real huge issues, I did notice that the update ate up more of my phones memory, so I had to get rid of some apps to get rid of the stupid low memory notification, and so far my battery life went down the crapper, It had been doing really well, but now it sucks, barely made it through the day, I’ll see if it donht get better over time, cause my battery has had ups and downs before…Once again. I wish I knew a for sure wat to help anyone else get this update..but all I know is to try the following:

    1. If you dont already have AnyCut, Download and install it from the Market Place
    2. Long Press an empty spot on your desktop
    3. select Shortcut from the context menu
    4. Select AnyCut as the ShortcutType
    5. Select Activity from the AnyCut shortcut type
    6. Select Device Management from the list of Activities
    7. You can rename the short cut if you want to, but it’s not necessary
    8. Click “OK” – the short cut should be created on your desktop
    9. Click the short cut to launch Device Manager
    10. Select Start DM
    11. You should immediately see a pair of red and blue arrows in the top left corner of the screen – these are in a different location than the usual “Getting Information” arrows that appear more towards the middle of the top of the screem
    12. After a minute or so you should be prompted to install the update.

    Firmware: 1.6
    Baseband: T939UVJE2
    Kernel: 2.6.29 root@sep-56 #1
    Tue May 419:02:25 KST 2010
    Build: 76XXSDCBALUM6375

THere is also new info on Tmobiles Bh2 forum about how to get the update if you havent already, although they say to uninstall home replacement apps, but I didnt and I still was able to update so I dunno about that one..well good luck everyone..swype is kinda neat, and the new market is what I wanted, other than that its mostly the same, with less memory and crappier battery least for me.

  • TMOprophet

And heres the new info posted by one of the mods on the forum

If you have not recieved the Behold II OTA , you will need to do the following:

If you did not receive the OTA update for software version T939UVJE2, perform the following:

    1. Ensure you have appropriate network coverage.
Once in an appropriate coverage area, you will receive the next OTA push.
    2. Ensure that you are not roaming.
Once in an appropriate coverage area, you will receive the next OTA push.
    3. Verify that you have the proper data plan for this phone.
Once you have the appropriate data plan, you will receive the next OTA push.
    4. Verify that TouchWiz is running by performing the following:

Note: The Behold II uses an integrated TouchWiz interface. If TouchWiz has been uninstalled or is not running, you will not receive the update.
    1. Ensure that you have not “rooted” the phone or installed another version of Android. This removes TouchWiz.

    2. Ensure that you are not using any other themed interfaces, such as aHome, ADW, Touchhome or Open Home etc.

Note: These interfaces bypass TouchWiz and prevent FOTA software updates.

    Uninstall the themed interface
    1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Tap Applications.
    4. Tap Manage applications.
    5. Tap the application you want to remove.
    6. Tap Uninstall.
    7. Tap OK.
    8. Reboot your device.

Note: Once the original interface is reinstalled, you will receive the next OTA push. If TouchWiz is not running a master reset may be needed.
    5. Verify that you are running software version T939UVJA3, by entering *#9999# from the Dialer.

If you are using T939UVIJ6 (Original version), you must first update to T939UVJA3. By following the same process as above.
If you are using T939UVJE2, you have already updated to the last software.

I did the AnyCut thing. Twice, Didn’t work. Then I rebooted my phone and i got the notification for the update. Which I then got…Nothing new, I already had Swype. Phone is a tad bit faster though. In my opinion. We’ll see what time tells. Anyways, I still decided to email the t-Mobile guys that’s posted above. Hopefully I get me a new phone. I’m tired of this nonsense. i paid 430 for my phone and I wanna get 430’s worth..

  • Waiting

I don’t know why I’m getting all worked up over this 1.6 upgrade… I feel like a dog waiting for a table scrap. gimme gimme, please gimme… woof! Heck once 1.6 get’s here (if it does) then what? We’re still back to wanting 2.x etc… This whole fiasco is nothing but a time waster and stress inducer… but dammit I want my BH2 to have the latest and greatest OS just like the big boys do. Upgrade still isn’t here and I’m tired of waiting. Now have to wait until the next OS push… Feels like I’ve already been pushed enough… I need to get a life… and a new phone… and a new carrier :(
Sorry, no contribution to the discussion but this diversion to the 1.6 update situation really only temporarily defers the real issue that the BH2 will not be supported past this token OS. Samsung has left a huge void in my little brain and I won’t be buying another Samsung anything. But I’m reasonably sure they really don’t care and I’m not really sure T-Mo does either. Pretty sad!

  • Matt

Tried it 5 times with any cut now I have 1.6.
    .. Woohoo

  • John monkan

Yeah the any cut trick worked!!! It’ll work…
Thanks even tmobile couldn’t figure this out

  • pissed*off+@*tmo

T-mobile sucks for this one they don t know. Samsung. Don’t know wtf

  • TMOprophet

UPDATE: My battery life continues to be utter crap after update, within 3 hours of on and off light web browsing and no real heavy use I am down to 29 percent, off a full charge. Before the update I could go almost 2 days on a single charge using open home. WTF, I have checked the battery use option (that now exists in the new update) and It seems the most of the battery is going to Cell standby and display, I set display brightness to its lowest setting and you cant do anything about cell standby, I also noticed that my WIFI was turned on, I had turned it off. So I turned it off again. I am now recharging the battery and will try a round 2 with the battery life, I emailed the Executive customer reponse dude, and updated him on my contiued issues, I have yet to here back from him, other than the initial response to my angry email I sent. I will keep you guys posted as to how things develop and play out., PS the only real thing I wanted out of this update was the stupid upgraded market…seems that should be updateable like any other app..In my opinion, would have saved me the hassle of going through this update and the trouble it has caused.

    • Nexus

I have still not recieved the update and I got app you said to get and nothing still. this by far has been the worst experiance I have ever had with T-mobile. I emailed those people. lets see what happens. I have use any cut like 20 time so far and nothing. lets see what happens, pray for me everyone, I can’t afford a new phone right now. getting married and really can’t spend anymore. well I will stop whining. let me cross my fingers.

      • TMOprophet

Just make sure your running touch wiz instead of any other home app, I didnt uninstall open home, as some suggested, I just switched back to touch wiz, make sure you got the update from Feb. and just keep trying once in awhile, I had to try it many times before I got anything, TMO might have be actively pushing the update out for anycut to work, Im not sure if the BH2 will just pick it up on its own,, honestly if I didnt want the updgraded market so much, I would just go back to factory setting, cause my battery life is toast now. And yeah swype is cool, but there aint much to brag about, and I have way less available memory now. So it kinda sucks. ANyway just kepp at it every now and then, you should be able to pick it up eventually.

  • Bryce

I finally got the update to happen today but for whatever reason, swype won’t work. The tutorial freezes and the keyboard does nothing. I read somewhere to turn the sound off on the swype settings (also a hassle cuz the settings page would just suddenly exit itself out on it’s own after a few seconds), but that didn’t help either.

Also, tons of Force Closes that I never had to deal with before.

When is the part that this consolation prize of an update is supposed to make my phone better?

  • NeXus

not understanding why everyone but me has gotten the update. lol tmobile must hate me.

  • Waiting

You’re not alone NeXus, I don’t have it either. After reading about the batt life, I’m not sure i want it. Batt life on BH2 is pretty bad as is.

  • Bluto

*******************************Agree, after reading about the shorter battery life, i’m debating whether to attempt the upgrade to 1.6 or……….. dare to root my BH2, I hear good things about rooting. Android forums has a lot of info on rooting the BH2.

What do you guys think about this?

    • Waiting

Rooting sounds feasible to me. As long as we can flash another ROM to the phone rooting is mandatory. Otherwise I’m not sure what rooting does for us other than make closed areas of the phone available. I guess the big issue is that SS will not release code to make flashing a 2.x ROM doable. I’m not a programmer so I do not have enough expertise in this regard. Maybe one of the more experienced here can help. Or Google ‘behold 2 rooting’ I’m sure there are FAQ’s galore that would give us insight on advantages and disadvantages of rooting. I have read that a 1.6 ‘Galaxy’ ROM has been successfully applied to a BH2, so maybe that’s an option after rooting.
      my .02

    • TMOprophet

The new market is nice, and swype is cool, but my battery life isnt as good, now I have been working on trying to optimize it, by monitoring whats using it and making tweeks to the settings and stuff, but before the update my battery could last almost 2 days using open home instead of touch wiz, so I am definately not happy about the battery life, if I can solve this problem through messing with settings and such, then I guess its ok, and I will deal with it till the Vision comes out.
Some things Iv done for the battery are:
Turned of WIfi, cause the update automatically turned it on or something
      turned display brightness to lowest
tweeked my open home settings to run less stuff
I use my task killer all the time

So far I have been able to improve the battery life. the first day I got barely 4 hours out of a full charge, yesterday and today I have gotten about 16 hours with only light use, so I would say its an improvement, although cell radio is using the most power, more than it should IMO…but you cant adjust that. Well good luck.. As for rooting..I thought about it too, but it sounded complicated, and I am not a programmer, so I would probably just fudge it up if I tried. But if you got the know how,,then go for it

      • dwayne

my phone did not get the first up date what can i do about that

  • JCHang

As I said before, I restored my phone to the factory setting and called to T-mobile 3 times, and finally got my update Tuesday morning! If you REALLY want it, I guess you can try that

    • NeXus

I called t-mobile about it and they told me that they can’t force the update. someone did say that they were going to put a form in, lets see what happens.

  • Diobando

So, I did the any cut trick in my wife’s phone and it worked the first time. The update runs fine, no problems so far and the phone its running faster and smoother.I think is worth it.

  • Waiting

Glad to hear it Diobando, Happy to know someone is making progress. I’m still waitin… Still concerned about batt life but willing to give it a try… that is if the update ever gets here… Called T-Mo yesterday, was advised the updates could take 2 weeks or more to reach everyone… So if the start date was June 21 then we’re just about there aren’t we? :(

    • NeXus

I know how you feel I am still waiting for the update myself. I don’t think I will ever get it. I called T-mobile and they said that they put a form in and I should get it shortly. I emailed those emails that where on here and I got nothing.

    • TMOprophet

My battery is doing much better now, after doing the things I mentioned above combined with some time, now everything is fine. Im not sure how or why, but now the battery life is back to normal. maybe your phone just has to get use to the new stuff..I dunno….ANyway I played with an Evo and its so awesome, waiting for TMO to get something like it for sure. IF I didnt hate Sprint..I would recommend the EVO in a heartbeat to anyone…Anyway good luck with updates. Hope you get them soon, keep trying the Anycut trick… I how frustrating it is. I tried it a lot before it keep at it.

  • Waiting

Well, I’m tired of waiting and playing the BH2 game. Heading down to T-Mo tomorrow to see if I can get the touch 3g slide. Just read several reviews including Noah’s on Phone Dog. The slide seems to have everything I want. Too bad I feel like I have no other choice then to pay full boat for a new phone. I’d wait for the Galaxy S but do not want to give Samsung another dime. I’m a patient person but guess I finally hit my limit this eve. Plus after reading such positive reviews on the slide it made me want one. It’s auction time for the BH2. Sorry just to had to rant a bit.

  • Alejandro

Hey so the update was okay. Battery life is down though. I had one question though. I know that rooting a phone can open extra features but If I rooted my Behold II what what exactly would change? What advantages would I have? Because honestly if the pros outweigh the cons then I’ll do it…The update really didn’t change much…just take up memory…

and I’m planning on getting a Galaxy S in a few weeks anyways. Probably Sprints version because of the front camera plus flash and the keyboard, but you never know I might just stick around after I weigh the options.

So any help with the pros and cons of rooting this device specifically?

  • Jeff

So I’ve been waiting and waiting for the update and still nothing. Called tmo but they were essentially useless (go figure..). Started trying the anycut method today and still nothing. I’ve set Touchwiz as the default home over my openhome I’ve been using but still no luck. Do i need to completely uninstall it to get it to work? I actually still haven’t recieved the first update and Im still running the original version now so from what I’ve read is that need two separate updates to catch me up now. Weary about trying the master reset and stuff but might give it a go soon if nothing happens. Any more help would be great!

  • NeXus

still nothing. t-mobile must really hate me. wow I have never rooted the phone either. wondering why I can’t get the update.

  • brokenCookie

As of today (July 6) still not received the update. running stock everything and every day running DM update through anyCut only to get “No data received” every time. Keeping battery level @ or above 80% constantly. Very frustrated…

  • Waiting

Well, I’m still waiting too. Wound up deciding to wait on the purchase of a 3G touch slide. Mostly because my wife gave me the evil eye… actually both evil eyes! Plus, spending 400 clams at the moment for a similar phone (processor, specs, etc…) is a bit silly. I suppose if you are going to spend that much you might as well pitch in a little more and get something with a snapdragon processor. I’m still very interested in the 3G touch slide but for now will stick it out with BH2 a little longer. I put the phone completely back to stock with a master reset. Running touchwiz and one program; ‘Any Cut’. Let’s see what happens tonight. I do have the first update (on the phone when I got it) so I just do not understand why we’re not getting 1.6.
    Frustrated as well! :(
    Good luck everyone.

  • skeeterflea

Stock BHII Southern AZ, still no update. This stinks. At least push the .6 as promised.

  • Alejandro

Just got off the phone with A T- mobile executive. I sent her an email. ( If you scroll through the comments you’ll find the emails) The email told her my frustrations with my Behold 2. She offered to exchange my phone for a Mytouch 3G slide with my choice of colour. but because it’s on back-order I bargained with her to give me a different phone.

Guess who just scored a free Samsung Vibrant?

Yeah Lol, I’m super super excited…

    • dwayne

lucky you there just sending me another behold ii hopefully this one works

  • Waiting

Wow! Alejandro, good for you! Maybe we all should do the same. Flood T-mo with calls. Of course that is prob already happening.
Glad it worked out for you. I’m still awaiting 1.6. I run device mgt regularly. Tired of waiting and I would prefer to go back to my home alternative rather than stick with TW. But that appears to be required for the 1.6 update to land. :(

  • lesismore

batery life will continue to be and issue as long as the apps you use has access to your systems and keeps system up and running i still have not recieved update but now i’m not so upset about it

  • Bluto

Well, I think the T-Mo exec’s. might be getting swamped with emails because, I also emailed them with my complaints and also got a call within a day of doing so. But, they basically offered me didly squat. The rep also told me that the 3g Slide was on backorder but didn’t even offer it as a no cost replacement. He told me that I “may” qualify for a damn discount on another phone or they could send me a replacement B2. Of course, I was shooting for Alejandros deal. Nope, the rep was not backing down. The more tried to convince him that T-Mo was deceptive about releasing Android 2.0 for the B2, the more he argued that wouldn’t have benefited much from having 2.0. Insane, no?

Well, I walked away from the ordeal with nothing but my d**k in my hand. All I could do is just threatened to cancel my contract with T-Mo and move over to AT&t. Sucks.

  • Waiting

Yeah, looks like early birds got the worm. Now T-Mo is not just jumping in and willing to help us BH2 owners left in the OS upgrade dust. I’m still awaiting 1.6. I don’t think it’s coming to So Cal. This BH2 situation bothers me enough to want to buy another phone. I won’t go AT&T because I live in an AT&T dead zone and I don’t like their customer service. Maybe Sprint, but there is talk of T-Mo and Sprint merging so any nifty handsets to come out of this are likely to be years from now. Given T-Mo is GSM and Sprint is CDMA, who knows how they would work this. Guess that’s not our problem. I haven’t read any updates to law suits and the like on the BH2 issue, it seems to be quiet in the media. Anyone hear anything new?

  • Bluto

I never got the 1.6 update either and can’t get it as much as I try. I think I’m going ahead and root my B2. Everyone, generally speaking, who’s rooted their B2 is really, really happy with the results. It’s not an easy process for the novice (like me) but apparently worth it.

  • Bluto

Update: I received another phone call fro T-Mo to my surprise. The rep told me that they could switch my phone for a “refurbished” Motorola Cliq XT. I told him I’d research the phone and get back to him. The Cliq XT isn’t the best phone. Comparable to the B2. Camera, eventhough 5mpxl, worse than the B2’s ( I actually like B2’s camera. Panorama is also very cool on it) And…….the Cliq XT is “supposed” to get Android 2 but, it’s not out yet for the Cliq XT. Sound familiar? It would ship to me with 1.5 or 1.6 on it. No thank you. They’re supposed to get back to me.

I’m glad they’re taking me and my complaint a bit more seriously.

  • Waiting

Excellent Bluto, glad you’re making progress. Nothing new here. I also contacted T-Mo (again)… have heard nothing for roughly 9 days. Guess I’m SOL… The BH2 continues to do whatever it wants when it wants… it rebooted on me right in the middle of a call day before yesterday… that was really weird.
I’m waiting the rest of the week, if no word from T-Mo then I’m done with the phone and will find a replacement. Also checking out Verizon. Prices are a bit higher but they have good coverage and nice phones. Hate to go CDMA but it’s an option.

  • Bluto

No go, I’m toast. I insisted on something better than what T-Mo was offering me and they didn’t budge. Basically it was get a refurbished Behold ll, refurbished Mytouch 3g, refurbished Cliq XT or take a hike. I didn’t like any of those oprions so, I’m stuck for now for now I’m stuck with my dang B2 with 1.5 on it. I did send the big shots one final email stating my disgust and distaste with T-Mo. They aren’t doing a heck of a lot to keep up their customer loyalty which EVERY business needs to do.

  • Waiting

I gave up… I succumbed to the T-Mo gods and purchased a touch 3g slide. 100 times better phone the BH2. It works like it’s supposed to. Screen is excellent, OS is fast, Android 2.1, nice build quality, I really do like it. Took the easy pay option with no interest. It was worth it to me. Hanging on to the BH2 for a bit and up on the block it goes. No more Samsung anything for me.

I tried the anycut thing and it didnt work then i rebooted then tryied again ….i clicked on the DM and didnt do any thing so i pressed menu button and it said update software so they sent me a notifcation that will give me update and a hour so after an hour passes i’ll let ya now
