Be The First To Own The Samsung Vibrant, Thanks To eBay

One of the posts I enjoy doing most around here is the almost clockwork like eBay sale that inevitably comes before the release of a high profile device like the Samsung Vibrant. We’ve seen it with the myTouch Slide, myTouch 3G, and the Motorola Cliq just to name a few. Something to mention here is the failure of the seller to get the proper bands right for the T-Mobile edition only mentioning Bands 850/900/1800/1900, so a little bit of fail right there. We’re not sure how exactly this person got their hands on a Vibrant so early as we haven’t heard anything about people getting their hands on them early. However, someone somehow got a hold of one and it can be yours if the price is right!

Mossberg Reviews T-Mobile’s HSPA+ Network

Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg (yes, him), took some time out of his busy Apple dominated schedule to review the less interesting parts of wireless networks.  That less interesting part being the actual network.  In his test, he compared the new 3G iPhone 4 with the MyTouch Slide and the webConnect Rocket with Verizon’s UM175 modem.  He found that T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network beat the competition in all the tests.  His results are as follows:

In each spot, I did 10 tests of the devices and averaged their speeds. At the first location, the T-Mobile Slide barely edged out the iPhone, with a download speed averaging 2.84 mbps versus the iPhone’s 2.74 mbps. At the second location, however, the Slide’s edge grew, with an average download speed of 4.26 mbps versus 3.65 mbps for the Apple product.

The laptop tests were much more dramatic. At my first test location, the T-Mobile Rocket drove the ThinkPad to an average download speed of 4.88 megabits per second, versus just 1.36 megabits per second for the Verizon data modem. At the second location, the Rocket achieved an average download speed on the laptop of 6.15 mbps versus 1.58 mbps for Verizon’s modem.

The only disclaimer is that these tests were performed in areas were T-Mobile’s network is strong and HSPA+ ready.  I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to the development of this network and a real HSPA+ phone.  Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Motorola Charm on its Way?

Maybe you aren’t digging the MyTouch Slide or the Samsung Vibrant.  Well, it looks as though Motorola will be giving T-Mobile customer’s another Android pick, and it might be charming.  Dubbed the Motorola Charm, which we think might be the Motorola Basil from a while back, this portrait qwerty, candybar Android phone will surely make some people happy.  This is reportedly running the new and improved Motoblur, with scalable widgets and enhanced Facebook and Twitter integration, all powered by Android 2.1.  This new Motoblur should hit the Cliq and Cliq XT as well, so look for that in the future.  Aside from that, not much is know about this phone.  Stay tuned for more information and, as always, leave your thoughts in the comments!

New myTouch Slide TV Ad Campaign Kicks off

T-Mobile looks like its ready to finally unleash its television campaign for the myTouch Slide with its Twitter account giving us an early look. This thirty second spot seems to focus on the “Genius” button and how helpful it can be to speak your search. Personally, I always know where the local ice cream place is, but that’s just me. I don’t know if this will sway the tech savvy, but it might score with those who just love hands free options.

Verizon Now The Dominant Android Player, T-Mobile In Second Place?

I suppose in hindsight I really shouldn’t have been as surprised as I was over the results of a recent study regarding Android usage. I would have thought that T-Mobile, as the originating Android carrier would have remained the dominant player in the game, but the handset is really the buying decision now, not the carrier. With that in mind, according to a recent study by Chitika Research, Verizon is now the dominant player in the Android game with 48% of the market, mostly due to the 33% control the Droid has on the device front. T-Mobile claims just 23% of the market with the G1 leading the way at 8.12% followed by the myTouch 3G at 6.34%. We should mention that the myTouch Slide does not appear to be a part of this study.

Personally, this is just disappointing and I would love to see T-Mobile raise its stake in the Android platform and give Verizon a true run for their money. With the Samsung Galaxy S around the corner for all the carriers, T-Mobile should fare well in particular as it will be the most powerful device in their lineup. Verizon will have a tougher time positioning the Galaxy against the upcoming Droid X and HTC Incredible.

There is little doubt T-Mobile needs to step up its game and in a big way if it plans on at least holding firm in the second spot in the US Android game.

T-Mobile Expands Super-Fast Network and Availability of T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket USB Laptop Stick to Cover 25 Major Metropolitan Areas

BELLEVUE, Wash.June 16, 2010 Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc. announced the expansion of its super-fast mobile broadband network, now offering 4G speeds1 to more than 25 major metropolitan areas across the U.S., and expects to cover more than 75 million Americans with HSPA+ by the end of June. Complementing the network expansion is the availability of the

T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket USB Laptop Stick, the first HSPA+ capable device from a national U.S. wireless carrier, in T-Mobile retail stores in these new areas.

Now HSPA+ and the T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket USB Laptop Stick are available in major metropolitan areas across the country including Los Angeles; Dallas; Atlanta; Houston; Seattle; Tampa and Orlando, Fla.; Pittsburgh; Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, N.C.; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.; New Orleans; and Charleston, S.C. In addition, HSPA+ has been expanded to Bentonville, Ark.; Anderson, S.C.; and Fayetteville, N.C. T-Mobile’s HSPA+ mobile broadband service is already live in New York; Philadelphia; Las Vegas; Memphis; Upstate New York; Connecticut; Providence, R.I.; and the Washington, D.C., suburbs.

“T-Mobile has rolled out HSPA+ service to more than 25 major metropolitan areas in four month’s time, as we drive towards having the most pervasive mobile broadband network delivering 4G speeds in the country,” said Neville Ray, senior vice president of Engineering and Operations for T-Mobile USA. “T-Mobile is delivering unprecedented value to our customers with the availability of a super-fast mobile broadband experience combined with compelling and affordable devices and data plans.”

T-Mobile’s rapidly expanding HSPA+ mobile broadband footprint makes it easy for customers to enjoy 4G speeds on the HSPA+-enabled T-Mobile® webConnect Rocket USB Laptop Stick. In addition, T-Mobile currently has 15 3G devices that can benefit from enhanced speeds when they’re on the HSPA+ network, including the newest smartphone available from T-Mobile today — the Nokia E73 Mode.
T-Mobile has made considerable progress in the number of areas with faster mobile broadband — and expects to continue this aggressive pace to deliver HSPA+ speeds in 100 major metropolitan areas with backhaul in place, covering 185 million people in the U.S. by the end of this year.

“With the rapid expansion of its HSPA+ network this year, T-Mobile is in a great position of being able to deliver high-speed data service to a broader number of customers today,” said Peter Jarich, principal analyst, Wireless Infrastructure, Current Analysis. “Ultimately, consumers don’t care what technology powers the network they’re using — they care about the quality and experience of their mobile data service, the cost of those services, and the devices available to access them. HSPA+ has the potential to deliver higher data rates across a broader lineup of devices in the next one to two years than competing technologies.”

“No More Ties” – Dads Want Smartphones

T-Mobile’s celebration of dads couldn’t come at a better time with new T-Mobile survey results showing that more than half of dads received Father’s Day gifts they didn’t want. In fact, 53% of dads don’t recall the gift they received just two years ago.

Comparison Chart, T-Mobile Vs iPhone 4

It’s not uncommon for carriers to release a bullet point comparison sheet when a competitor is about to drop a major device onto the scene. Considering it doesn’t get any bigger than iPhone 4, the fact that T-Mobile has a comparison chart available for its employees is hardly news. We think its well beyond safe to say that Sprint and Verizon have either posted their own or will do so in the coming days. What’s interesting about this picture and please don’t think we’re reading any more into it than what can be taken at face value is that it really doesn’t highlight the strengths of other devices over the iPhone’s. To be sure, the myTouch Slide, HTC HD2 and Garminfone all have their highlights, strengths and weaknesses when compared to each other, never mind the iPhone. So this is less of a comparison chart and more of an “I have no idea what the intended goal here is.” Not to mention, does anyone realize that for the iPhone 4, pictured is the 3GS?

Lets keep the comments civil shall we?

Garminfone Gets Its Very Own Commercial

The Garminfone is likely going to fall under the niche category and may not have the mass appeal of say, the myTouch Slide. However, its still an incredibly unique device and worthy in its own right of a little thirty-second advertising spot. With full on board Garmin navigation system, this phone is perfect for the traveler, the out of town visitor and anyone who just manages to get lost. It’s been out for just two days now, were there any takers? Report your thoughts on the device in the comments!

Has The myTouch Marketing Campaign Begun?

Thanks to one of our eagle-eyed readers we see the myTouch Slide “massive” marketing campaign has begun, with billboards in the NYC Subway. I might add, I saw the very same poster just this morning driving in the Ft Lauderdale area here in South Florida.

While we know that the official launch of the myTouch Slide doesn’t kick off till June 16th, we hope that they blanket cities with billboards such as the one above. Anything T-Mobile, anything but those awful B-list celebrity myTouch 3G commercial. As much as I love Phil Jackson, I’ll never buy anything from Whoopi Goldberg. Seriously, I’m standing by that, don’t put her in another commercial, ever. Here is to hoping that the campaign is a resounding access.
