Samsung Holding Galaxy S 2 Press Event On August 29th

Samsung just sent out invites for their Galaxy S 2 press event (where is our invite Samsung??) being hosted August 29th in New York City. They aren’t being shy as to what is on the agenda with the big roman numerals on the bottom of the invite a dead giveaway. We’re going to see the Galaxy S II introduced for an American audience and we hope that the Samsung Hercules makes an official debut as well.

We’re full of questions for Samsung too, such as will it be single-core or dual-core, HSPA+ 42Mbps compatible or no? These are the things we want to know and thankfully we have just a little over two weeks to find out. Start your countdown clocks from right now.

    Awesome news. Thanks

So in other words…we won’t see the Galaxy S2 until September.  Samsung must love to break their promises and losing money.  Honestly, if they decide to push the release of the phone until September, I don’t think it’s worth getting anymore.  The phone is going to be far behind what the the newest phone is going to have.  iPhone 5 comes out around September.  People are going to think twice before buying the S2 now.

    • J. Williams

My goodness Kevin, pull your skirt down.  ;-)  People are still going to buy the most powerful phone to date, even if its a Sept. US release date.  iPhone 5?  Stop it.  We all know what its gonna look like.  There will be these little icons all over the screen, and you slide your finger left and right to navigate through the panels.  Wow, exciting.  4G/LTE…nope.  Same as all the others.  So, Sammy’s SG2 will be amazing, and I don’t see it being out dated anytime soon in the US.  We don’t even have it yet.

Yay! I have had my vibrant since it was released last summer I think its time to upgrade (:

  • Br1

Ok, so the GS2 release is inevitable, now if you can please provied some guidance towards a thought out decision in getting this phone without breaking the bank. I’ve been following this device since its release in S. Korea, so theres no way I’m not getting this. Current owner of GS1 and loved having it, so now it comes down to this bohemoth to become mine!!  So please no samsung bashing or asking why i want in the first place(it does everything i want my device to do)

So the dillema is the current fam plan im in. 2 lines out of contract (both want new phones) and 2 lines in contract(over one year through contract) we’re on FamilyTime Plus plan (2000 whenever, unlimted weekend/nights/tmobile) also have domestic mess. family $20, web for 2 lines @$25 each, ins for 3 @$8,  additional line $10.. etc.. all totals with taxes fees etc at about $260 a month. So is this the best option for me to stay on?!?! All 4 lines want new phones (I want gs2) So i dont know to renew all 4 contracts, and if i do i want to know if i should stay at current plan or try the new $50 plan and add on the other 2 lines that are out of contract (keep in mind now they will both have interent now and im aware of the 2 etf fees as well) Or go with the value plan. how about classic? Called  customer service and all they wanted to do was raise my minutes and get all 4 lines in new contracts tried to sell me classic which after doing the math was not a good suggestion. So now i come for guidance to tmonews for some honest feedback so please any help will be greatly appreciated. Basically i got the whole family waiting on me for the upgrade since I WANT MY GS2!!!!

    • OKDave

Well, all I can tell you is my own situation – assuming you’re even still watching the thread. My choices are to dump TMo completely, avoid the nightmare that is ATT, and give a hard look to Verizon, reup with Tmo on my current plan, or move to the Value plans. The first problem is that migrating to Verizon means five new activation fees at $35 a whack. That’s $175 before I start. So, I look at TMo value plans, which means I’m stuck with a $200 ETF on one of my five lines.

So, when I do the math, and amortize the ETF and the $15 for this new Hercules phone (my myTouch 3g is gasping for air every day) into my monthly bill, I find out that my net cost with the new value plans, which would add texting and give me two 2GB data plans, is *still* $20 lower than my current cost with my old phones under my Even More 700 plan with no texting (assuming roughly equal sunk costs on phones either with upgrade pricing or amortized straight purchase over 20 months under the Value plan).

Ultimately, if I stay with Tmo, which is not a given, I think I can shave $240 annually and get this great new phone. If I opt to continue with my poor lil’ MyTouch, that’s an extra $15/month.

Biggest problem right now is getting the same answer twice from Tmobile reps regarding the ETF. I hear its everything from $100 to $200, and no two people have given me the same answer. Kinda like talking to the IRS. And it reminds me of the hideous future customer service disaster looming ahead when ATT devours us all like the black widow spider they are. And that, alone, keeps the Verizon option alive and well.

    Single-core? C’mon David lol

Well I can definitely wait another month after it becomes official. My Vibrant has lasted this long and still runs like a champ.

Not Samsung but American Carriers. They are ones who insist on the micro management of design and features.

i bet the only  carrier logo  on US models but other then that  the features are same with US version of upcoming galaxys2 and  world  version of galaxys2 that was already released 4 months ago.

  • ItsMichaelNotMike

Well this is on the same track as was the Vibrant.  So I continue with my speculation, the SGS II will debut on September 21 or 28.

And for those of you not getting subsidized phones, be prepared to fork over $600 (sales tax included). Subsidized, it’s gonna be $300 to $375. (Again, that’s my guess).

Why these prices?  Simple, this is the hottest phone on the planet, the carriers know it, so they are reasonably going to charge top dollar for it.  And the Hercules having the specs it does, including a 4.5″ display, this will be the most awesome phone T-Mobile has ever debuted.

Start saving your coffee money, sell stuff on eBay, pay down your credit card (and where relevant, consider delaying going back to college until the spring term).

Sidenote: It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to the SGS II.  It has already seen that where the SGS II and iPhone are sold, the SGS II outsells the iPhone.  Other than the cool factor in owning an iPhone, even Apple knows the iPhone is an inferior product compared to the iPhone, including the upcoming iPhone 5.

I was really hoping for a “bonus comment” instead of an assumptive “sidenote”.  I miss your bonus comments.

rofl, your comment just made my day.. But i kinda agree with micheal that the sgs2 as well as the variants(hercules, etc) will give apple, the ip4, and ip5 a run for its money..

I base my assumption on the user reviews i’ve read about the infuse 4g(cough).. The reviews are filled with ip4 defectors and first time android users, who swear they’ll never go back!( but isteve jobs persuasion skills are legendary, so we’ll see)

Bonus comment(sorry i had to): Im hoping this event will bring some clarification to this whole exynos or qualcomm issue..

I’m not an apple fanboy at all…but the SGS2 will not give apple a run for anything…the Iphone5 is going to be dual core A5 processor, 8mp camera, and a standardized operating system that people have come to know and love…. and people HATED the original galaxy phone, myself included…and have lost faith in anything SAMSUCK has to offer…same thing is now happening with the G2X…when LG finally goes to release the G3X…people will just walk away…

T-Mobile REALLY needs to step it up…test your product first…if it doesnt work, dont release it…you dont need to be the FIRST to do something…you need to be the BEST.

T-Mobile STOP sacrificing quality for trying to be “game changing”…it just makes you look stupid in the end.

          -Tmo customer since 2004

I agree with a lot of the points you made.. by run for its money I meant be competetive.. based on the world wide sales so far..

The final specs/design of either device(hercules, ip5) aren’t official yet, so I won’t argue with you there.. I passed on the first galaxy(vibrant) myself, I wasn’t a fan of the design or build quality.. the internals were/are insane though..

As far as android vs ios, I’ve tried both and prefer android, to each their own.. I don’t work for t-mobile or samsung, so I’m not going to defend either of them..

But I will say that t-mobile and samsung fit my respective needs(currently), so I choose to give them my $(will give once the hercules is released xD).. it all boils down to choice.. end rant

If it does show up as late as Sept 28 – it might as well give up the ghost as Iphone 5 will be released within 2 weeks of that, and other phones are pushing their way out of the hardware manufacturers wombs..

the problem today is that there is no rhyme or reason to the release schedule or to which phone people should go to – its chaos right now – and many (I for one) do not like the chaos of my phone that I might purchase going obsolete 60 days later when the carrier knows this is going to happen.  Give me at least 3-4 months of my phone being on top…. damn otherwise it pushes me into an endless wait and see whats next pattern – keeping my money in my pocket.

  • Jennirivera21

Good phone but like someone mentioned in a comment below me some people in other parts of the world like me are getting bored of using the galaxy s2. I live in Mexico and been using the galaxy s2 for about umm 3 months not 4 cuz telcel got it a looong time ago… the only thing I like is the 2 megapixel ffc cuz my video calls are clear quality and the dual core processor which makes the phone fast. Also u people in the US get screwed over a lot I been to new York 2 times to visit my sister btw loong flight from Mexico city to NY anyways I walked in to a Verizon, at&t,t-mobile, sprint store and looked at the phones u guys get. We get the same phones u guys do droid x, Motorola atrix etc .. only thing I noticed the phones u guys get have a bunch of carrier bloatware like Verizon vcast, att navigator, sprint tv, t-mobile tv I noticed att has the most stuff on there phones att barcode scanner, att yellow pages etc .. all do but att the most. That must really suck lol. Over here telecel, movistar, iusacell don’t have ANY of that stuff on there cellphones including iphone over here there’s no such thing as telcel navigator or telcel tv.. our phones are free we can do whatever we want there how they came out of the factory also we can install all the 3rd party apps we want. Also did I mention there’s no 1 or 2 year contracts over here? U can cancel whenever u want on every phone u get its kinda like prepaid but with the same benefits as contract phones no cancellation fee.

I don’t like samsungs phones at all. Yes they have good screens and are fast but they are made of cheap plastic tht makes them feel like crap. I will stick with HTC and Apple.

    • Anonymous

HTC and quality cant be used in the same sentence. Just use mytouch 4G for few days and you will realize…

    • dbell9

Just get a case, you will never no the difference.

    • Auser72

To me Samsung struck a fine balance between light weight and durability with the Galaxy S line . I haven’t heard any problems of quality with phones outside of perception do to light weight. The plastic from my experience is very durable, scratch resistant, and very forgiving to daily abuse.

    • http://twitter.com/funvirginian FunVirginian

Apple… how much farther can they go with tech – yes they can wrap the glass around the screen and speed up the phone – but they really can’t compare with the core capabilities of the Android OS..  and oh the limitations Apple imposes both on the app stores and on the developers… to hell with that.

i kinda want the nexus prime because it’ll be the first “ice cream sandwich” phone running the latest android stock interface and the rumored full HD screen, which in my opinion beats out Hercules latest touchwiz 4 interface and 800×480 screen. but Hercules does have the superAMOLED+ display and i can root it and since the 1GB of RAM and processor are still top and i’m sure it’s more than capable enough of running android’s future “ice cream sandwich” interface :)

    • http://twitter.com/funvirginian FunVirginian

But when is Nexus realistically going to be actually out in the retail market?

AT&T version of Samsung Galaxy S2 will be the “Attain”. Infuse is a completely different phone. You are really comparing comparing apple to oranges, hence flawed logic.

will the t-mobile hercules be equipped with exynos?if it is then it’s a winner for me.

        • Chrisangel13

Samsung Infuse 4G comes with a single core 1.2 GHz Hummingbird processor, the Galaxy S2 comes with a dual core 1.2 GHz Exynos processor. Hercules will most definitely have a 1.2 GHz dual core processor but the question is whether it’ll be Exynos or Qualcomm.

Except the infuse and the Hercules aren’t the same. (Well kinda). Like you said its a galaxy s II upgrade so it’ll be as fast as the original galaxy s II (more or less). Where as infuse isn’t a galaxy s II device…. so don’t see your point at all.

This is a concern for me. My mom’s Vibrant needs an Android upgrade, but the byzantine upgrade process requires an external PC (no OTA update) and some idiot proprietary Samsung software – which is not supported under any 64-bit version of Windows (as I found out the hard way about a month ago). A coworker of mine had nothing good to say about his Samsung phone from about two years ago, for the lack of support, or the Samsung LED TV he bought less than a year ago, and then watched it die – again with no support from Samsung even though it was under warranty (no parts available, old product). While my mom likes her Vibrant, and I can wade through computer and technical issues, the obvious less-than-stellar product support from Samsung does have me concerned about dropping $500+ on this phone.

While I’m terribly tired of the lack of information, I WILL get this phone. My contract with AT&T ended in April, so I’ve been impatiently waiting. I have waited so long, I refuse to wait for any other phone just because it’s “old.” I am totally serious. There will always be something better off in the horizon. This is the only time I fell for this trick. I bought my iPhone 3g when the 3gs was about to be released, so I’m not bothered that a phone is already some months old. Bring it on already!!!
