Windows Phone Mango on HD2

Warning – Music in video may not be your favorite, turn down your speakers.

Yeah, that title really sums it up.  Microsoft’s Windows Phone Mango update has found its way to the HTC HD2, proving once again that hackers are awesome.  Microsoft seems okay with it too, “We say tinker away with Mango and enjoy the juice,” but they do give a good warning that this probably voids your warranty.  This is more of a proof of concept than anything else, but it sure is interesting.

WTF!? I didn’t see anything different than the POS HD7 I have now. If anything I just seen an HD7 with a whole bunch of errors. I was trying to hold onto this phone till the Mango update came but I think I will get rid of it ASAP. I will stick to one of the many Android devices I have. Smh.

    • Peter

Stop saying lies. You for sure doesn’t have HTC HD7. Go back to your POS Android phones and stop spamming.

LOL. First Ica tell youa are a lier and just one of those fanbois that like to ttrash others. Second I think you admit that you have many Android phones perhaps because all of them have problem and you had to get many different ones so one may work and still doesn’t. That shows what is really POS: Your Android Phones.

No you moron, that just means I have money to spend that you obviously don’t. I tried posting a link last night to show all my phones when the idiot Peter called me a liar and now your bafoonery wants to follow in his footsteps to show that I indeed do have an HD7 but the MODERATOR won’t approve the damn comment. I try all kinds of different OS’s including IOS because I also own an unlocked iPhone4 but WP7, to me, really does suck. I tried to give it a chance but I am not liking it at all.

And calling me a liar does what?? I might be a lot of things but a liar ain’t one of them. I’ve tried all mobile OS’s and none of them interest me as much as Android right now. Before Android all I had was Windows phones (Touch Pro 2 – which I do regret getting rid of, T-Mobile Dash, and another silver T-Mobile phone that I can’t remember the name of) but ever since the release of Android there has been no other phone or OS that interest me as much as Android including IOS. My unlocked iPhone4 only gets used for listening to music in my car. WP7 is boring to me and so is IOS. I like the customization of Android and I know that’s just my opinion but to come here and call me a liar and a fanboy is bullshit cuz I am neither. I tried them all and Android to me is what I like best.

          webOS>iPhone>WP7>Android.Please, just STFU!

        • http://twitter.com/julez456 Julio DeJesus

If you say so..I never messed with webOS cuz T-mobile has never put out a webOS device so I can’t compare it to Android but to say WP7>Android..nigga please! IOS is nice, don’t get me wrong but to me its a boring OS! 16 icons per screen + the dock with the only customization available is to change the damn wallpaper unless you jailbreak (which mine is). Ooooh, how fun is that! WP7 is even worse..add tiles to the homescreen and change the color of them. WOW! The excitement is killing me! Wit the different homescreen launchers, widgets, customization, etc for Android I can change the look of my screens everyday for a month and never go back to the same “look”. That’s what I want in a phone because I get bored quickly. Why do you think I have so many phones? So now you STFU!

        • wyn6

Iphone has a very simple and dated UI that consists of a grid of icons. It takes the “walled-garden” approach so not much can be customized. But, it has one of the best user experiences of any current smartphone with its smoothness, ease of use, and simplicity. The iphone is very app-centric and currently has the most complete ecosystem of any phone. It’s ease-of-use factor is quite high (for the average comsumer). This is for the user or someone who wants a fluid, quick experience and/or wants to combine their phone experience with Apple’s ecosystem (Mac, ipod, itunes, etc.).

Android has the same simple and dated UI as the iphone. But, it adds several homescreens, widgets, live wallpapers, and launchers that can make things look quite different from the stock and/or manufacturer’s version.  The OS takes the “kitchen sink” approach and can be rooted, flashed and what not to more deeply customize what you see and do. Android is much more complex, and due to its “too many cooks” syndrome, can have quite a few technical issues. Thus, it’s ease-of-use factor (for the average consumer) is quite low compared to other smartphones. Android is very tech-centric. This is not a phone for average users as average users do not use 60-70% of the full functionality of an android device. This phone is more open than other smartphones and is for geeks, advanced users, and technophiles who want to hack, or otherwise customize their phones to infinity.

Windows Phone 7 has a simple, and artful UI which consists of a tiled interface, many of those tiles having live capabilities. Live tiles can impart information at a glance (seeing the score of a game without opening an app), flipping over to reveal flight arrival and departure times. Tiles can also deeplink to parts of an app, for example a boarding pass in an airline app, so that when that tile is tapped, you don’t start from the beginning of the app, you jump right to your boarding pass. This system gives the user the ability to quickly see meaningful information and move on. It is as smooth and fluid if not more so than the iphone and just as fast and easy to use. It takes the “walled-garden with windows” approach so it has more customization than the iphone but not as much as android. Like the other two, it also has features which are unique to itself but are more consumer-friendly. WP7 is very consumer-data-centric, integrating more into the phone itself than other smartphones. This is for the user, who wants a fluid, fast, fresh, and uniquely integrated smartphone experience.

Summary… This is each OS at a glance. All have their inherent strengths and weaknesses. One may be weak in an area another may be strong in. Some of us have tried them all extensively and can judge quite critically what we believe to be the best. Some of us have tried only one, maybe two, to any extent and can onloy judge with our passion and mostly in favor of our chosen OS. I believe those are called fanboys. In the end, the simple truth is neither OS is overall head and shoulders above the other regardless of how many sentences we type with the caps lock on.

The HD2 is some seriously capable hardware. To best Windows Mobile pon ever, runs Android VERY well, runs Windows Phone 7, and now the updated WP7 before other phones are even updated. I miss using my HD2 sometimes…it kinda was at the start of the whole superphone craze.

This is not final and just beta release to developers to test it and give some feedback. Not all features works the way it should as of now and you may get some errors but when the final version is ready then it is gonna be the best. Love it so far tough.

Don’t forget to add Ubuntu and Meego to the list.

I have an HD2 It’s running on stock Android 2.3.4 with the the nexus rom … i might try this out i love windows phone 7 but it lacked so many features but that’s what mangos for!

  • trife

Damn i miss my HD2. It seems like just when you think its dead, new life is breathed into it in the form of a new OS.

Wish i had it as my backup phone now. Wasn’t a huge fan of WinMo, but the hardware is STILL one of the best yet IMO.

I have an hd2 with wp7 and you need a 25 character activation code to access market downloads. If the mango version requires the samething then what’s the point. Without the code it’s just a phone that you can’t download anything.

    • Pnr

If u google lil… you will find how easy it is to get the code from Microsoft themselves.

It is extremely easy to get the activation code. I called Microsoft directly and they gave me the code no questions asked. Took less than 5 min. I love these wp7 haters, if you don’t like it then why are you spending so much time talking about it on a page dedicated to wp7? I have had iOS, Android, and wp7. I actually like them all, just feel that wp7 is the cleanest, most polished mobile os out right now (iOS is close). And it is very new, developers take time to warm to a new os. Please if you feel you must state your displeasure with wp7 on this page, save your time. Nobody cares about your opinion and you clog up the feed for people who actually want to talk about it.

There are so many exciting things in this video actually. Just because you don’t like it that doesn’t mean it is boring. I can tell the same about many Android phones or videos as well. People like different things.

        • http://twitter.com/julez456 Julio DeJesus

What exactly did you find exciting in this video? I didn’t really see anything in that video that my HD7 can already do. I hated my HD7 before the Mango update and it looks like I’m still going to hate it after the Mango update. The only thing I kept it around this long for was Netflix (and hoping the Mango update would bring good things) but now that I have Netflix working on my Android phones I have no need for this phone really. Its a shame too because I like the hardware a lot. =(

So what’s your point you’re trying to make to me (implying to my post)? I just entitled my own opinion saying that WP isn’t my cup of tea, I didn’t say anything negative (don’t say that I stated “bored” cus I was implying to the video) or compared it to other OS. my reply was directly to WP.

Just curious as to why you say it sucks? What is wrong with wp? Look, feel, functionality, battery life, performance, cost, the name, or just because you simply do not like Windows products?

I tried using a windows phone, but it ate my baby, and chopped off my legs. I should have stayed with iOS or Android. I hear the Windows phone was made by Nazis and people who forced blacks into slavery in the South. Also, the Windows phone makes fun of handicapped people.

Other than those things, there’s no reason not to try and love the Windows Phone 7. The phone is amazing.

”forced blacks into slavery in the South” Those who don’t understand history are doomed to repeat it.I know this is not a political forum but I have to point out that our public schools are not teaching history. Slavery in this country did not just occur in the south. It wasn’t toothless hillbillies making slaves out of people just because they were black. It was prominent Europeans treating people like property…. Sorry it is just a sticking point for me.

      • Jaer

Trust me, you don’t want to go there with me. I’m the wrong person to try to give a history lesson. I wasn’t trying to be historically accurate with my post. First off, slavery was brought to this country, and was a part of our entire economy, in both the North, and the South. Our founding fathers expected slavery to last only a short time, they envisioned freedom would come for all in these new lands of opportunity. The reason the South was better known for slavery was because the farmlands were obviously more plentiful in the South, with cotton booming from the production of cheap clothing from factories where women were finally entering the workforce. While slavery existed in the North, ending slavery wouldn’t have crippled the North economy, but ending it in the South could have. States felt they should have the right to decide that law on an individual basis, causing the secession of the Southern states into the Confederacy. Too many people think the Civil War was fought over slavery. This wasn’t entirely true. At the heart of the Civil War was a pretty important issue, states rights and the over-reaching arm of the Federal government.

So to say slavery existed only in the South would be incorrect. But to try to make it seem as if the North had as big of a problem with ending slavery is just ignorant of the historical facts.

But regardless, none of this matters. My comment shouldn’t have made you jump to defend something I wasn’t attacking.
