Motorola Pushes Back Cliq XT Update

For Motorola Cliq XT owners the wait to Android 2.1 glory has been filled with a whole lot of waiting.  As it turns out, you’ll be waiting a little bit longer according to the new Motorola Android update release schedule calling for  “additional testing”.  The ominous “more details when available” could easily be construed as “we simply have no idea when this will be ready to launch”.   Cliq XT owners can take a little comfort in the knowledge that Samsung Vibrant owners are also playing the waiting game and waiting, and waiting, and waiting…

Better than sending out an update that doesn’t work.

    • Papa Midnight

Indeed. It’s probably for the better considering how broken this update for the Cliq is. Honestly, if I could, I’d go back to 1.5. This is horrible.

man, HELL YES! i just did it out of desperation… 2.1 was really really terrible…. unresponsive screen, super choppy, major battery issues (AND all my numbers got deleted!). I just went back and everything is as smooth as silk. i recommended it to anyone still stuck with this POS phone that updated. for you guys with the XT… SKIP IT!!!

oh, and it would freeze for no reason. i was throwing my phone against the wall and pulling out the battery every other day.. the battery calibration was the most frustrating… it would last for 3 days once every 2 weeks, then the rest of the time it would die in less than 12 hours…

        • Mags5

Glad I could help… Yeah, the 2.1 update for the cliq isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…

I’m glad I didn’t wait. I went and paid cash for a Nexus S on Monday. Much happier now.

Already got a phone with blur 2.1. Decided to go with the charm for the awesome keyboard for emulation goodness. Loving my phone!

  • Orge1126

not surprised….they are doing the same thing as they did to Cliq….moto is a big liar!!!!

  • Atomnjax

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Imagine that.

  • MotoFail

Sigh…..how many more months do we have to wait? I bought the phone in June and have waited patiently since then even though Tmobile was making sure to tell all potential customers that the phone would be updated on June 31. What’s even worse that the article doesn’t mention, is that the new line they added for the Wal-Mart Cliq XT. When they started selling that phone, anyone doing research on it would assume that it would be upgraded to 2.1 in Q4, as it stated on the Motorola website. They wait until a few weeks have gone by and then conveniently add the Wal-Mart Cliq XT row which states it will receive no upgrade. So for x number of weeks Wal-Mart has been selling the phone claiming there will be an Android upgrade. Just go and screw more of your customers Motorola. It’s all good!

i did exactly the same, got two cliq xt for both my wife and i from walmart family mobile. it’s an awesome plan but there are several apps i’ll never get to use since its 1.5.

    • Ms. Matrix

When I got the Cliq Xt it was a rush because I had the T-mobile Dash 3G which I hated with a passion. So I didn’t take the time to do my research like a normally do. So I got caught, at first I thought the cliq was the greatest phone, but after a while I realized it’s a piece of crap! Maybe if they gave us an update than I would have held on to it a little longer. But Moto kept lying to us time and time again about an update and it’s never going to happen. I got a new phone 2 months later and sold the cliq xt on Craigslist.

I will never buy anything from Motorola again, they don’t care about their customers.

  • Temporary_253

I think this demonstrates why Blur is a failure. Motorola has always had lousy software and good hardware. They ruined their phones by trying to stick Blur on them which added absolutely zero value other than forcing customers to create Motorola logins. Now they can’t support their own crappy software. If there’s any company that should just run stock Android it’s Motorola. Although I have to say that Samsung is a close second.

  • Rosenbaugh

Motorolla should offer a trade up program for Cliq XT owners and stop wasting their money and time.

  • Drew

yeah.. this just reminds me of what happened with my Behold 2. I feel like Tmo should have a policy. ” If the phone software will not be current long enough for us to stay competitive, we will not sell the phone.” If this were so, Vibrants, and Beholds, and Clix’s would be a non-issue.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ASLY6MKMKHP2HSETXPT73RZNPA infantry11b

The vibrant is a non issue, I’m currently running a froyo rom at the moment, as well as a gingerbread clone rom when i feel like it. There’s no issue with the phone because it’s the only one i’ve ever seen that is unbrickable. Root is the end all and be all of solutions with updates, take the initiative and update it instead of whining about someone else not doing it for you.

      • Bratty

I understand your comment but I must say that asking for an update is not whining. Rooting a phone is a solution that works for some but the majority of the people (yes, majority) don’t know how to root or want to. When you buy something, you expect support. Hacking your own phone for an update should not be “the only way”. Hold Moto and Sammy accountable, not the user.
I agree with you that people can get what they want by rooting. I just don’t agree that asking the manufacturer to update the OS is whining.

  • Kendrix_myrealname

I wouldn’t expect less from Moto

maybe if verizon would quit sucking on Moto’s **** they can get these updates out to other carriers. well good thing i have the G2

  • Mooch

Is anyone really surprised? The Cliq XT will never make it past 1.5. I rue the day I bought this device but nothing I can do outside of shelling out $500+ for a good phone. I guess that’s our punishment for buying this thing based on false hope.

  • William C

It won’t be much comfort to most XT owners, but gazelle.com is offering $60 for the phone right now. I’m sending mine in as soon as I get the box they are sending me. I will never buy another Motorola phone again.

  • Lacedupct Chi

You dont want the update. I got to test it and the device was dam near unusable. It just doesn’t work well on that device. Same thing with the Mytouch 3g i think the update cause more problems with customers coming in complaining about performance.

  • Moo

in other news…. T-Mobile has phones that aren’t made by Motorola and they actually work!.

Mot. is trash hopefully t-mobile eliminates them completely

I would rather try an acer phone

  • Trailer Trash

The Cliq and the Cliq XT is still bringing top dollar (average $150) on Craigslist. And people are buying them like crazy here.

I bought a Cliq XT on craigslist and it was not a bad phone but in the end I knew Motorola and T-mobile were never going to offer much support for the phone in the way of upgrades so I sold it on gazelle and got $75 for it. Now I am enjoying 4G speeds and Vanilla Froyo on my G2!!!

I have a Cliq…and have been HORRIBLY disappointed. I have the 2.1 update..and my phone hasn’t functioned properly since…I would recommend GETTING A NEW PHONE…. it’s RIDICULOUS. We spend all this time waiting for an update..while people with cheaper and older phones get 2.1…..and then we get it….get our turn by turn navigation..and new market..and so forth… THEN OUR PHONES CRAP OUT?!? Ridiculous lagging..sometimes your phone rings and you can’t even answer it because “accept” or “decline” fail to show up on the screen..you just hear it ring and feel it vibrate… lol. You try to read a txt..and click it to reply….PHONE FREEZES …and you wait and hope it unfreezes….usually about 10-15 seconds later it boots you back to the messages home screen (with e-mail, facebook, etc)..but sometimes it just restarts the phone all together. Ridiculous

    • Ms. Matrix

Dude just get another phone. I had the Cliq xt and it had 1.5 on it, I tried to wait for an update and it never came. So I got another phone and sold my cliq xt for $130 on Craigslist. Don’t wait around for them, they just don’t want to tell anyone that there is no update…

  • Ms. Matrix

I don’t understand them..Motorola didn’t even upgrade the Cliq XT yet and now they’re trying to push the Cliq 2…HA! Please save your money and wait for a much better phone. Cliq anything is a total waste!
