Let’s be honest: security hasn’t always been T-Mobile’s strong suit, and plenty of longtime customers still remember the 2021 breach. So it’s notable that the Un-carrier just published a detailed report on how it rebuilt its security, complete with numbers.
T-Mobile released Advancing Cybersecurity at T-Mobile on November 2. The headline stat for customers is that successful SIM swap attacks are down more than 99% since 2022, thanks to tools like biometric ID checks, SIM Protection, and Port-Out Protection. On the employee side, phishing-related credential compromises are also down more than 99%. Nearly every T-Mobile employee is now passwordless, using FIDO2 hardware security keys, and new hires verify who they are with a selfie and a government ID before getting access.
The report also gets into the Salt Typhoon attack from late 2024. T-Mobile says the state-sponsored hackers came in through a third-party wireline provider and impersonated a trusted router at the edge of its network, a technique it hadn’t seen before. Its defenses stopped them before they reached customer calls, voicemails, or texts. If you want the full story, we covered T-Mobile’s side earlier this year in Inside T-Mobile’s Response to the Salt Typhoon Hack.
There are some other fun numbers in there. T-Mobile rolled out a zero trust setup across its workforce in just six months, its platform has blocked more than 6 million online threats, and Scam ID and Scam Block have stopped more than 160 billion unwanted calls since 2017. In 2025 alone, T-Mobile blocked nearly 3 billion scam and spam texts. It also opened a new Cyber Defense Center, and its Bug Bounty program has received more than 1,400 valid submissions.
All of this comes from T-Mobile’s own data, so take it with the usual grain of salt. But the best part for customers is that a lot of these protections are free and already on. If you haven’t yet, turn on SIM Protection and Port-Out Protection in your account. It only takes a minute, and it makes your number a lot harder to steal.
