As someone who has used Windows Mobile for quite some time, I know first hand that it can grow quite mundane. If this has happened to any of you out there, thankfully, now we have a solution-Android! It seems those crazy kids over at XDAndroid have been working on a project to port Android to Windows Mobile devices and now their latest build is proving to be a huge success. Demonstrated on a HTC Touch Pro 2, the Android installation experiences no difficulty in making calls, sending SMS, downloading apps, or browsing the web. In fact, pretty much everything works besides GPS, Bluetooth, and the camera. Impressive!
After reading about this yesterday, I set out to try it myself on an old HTC Touch Pro 2 I had. Surprisingly, the hack proved to be pretty easy. If you’re tech savy and into roms, I really suggest trying it yourself. You can find the directions here! As always, flash with caution so you don’t brick your device.
The guys over at Engadget have compiled a nice little chart comparing the new Windows Phone 7 Series against past Windows Mobile versions, specifically, Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Its nice to see Microsoft opening Windows Mob–I mean Windows Phone 7 Series to not only business users, but the average consumer. Hopefully the device(s) live(s) up to all the hype surrounding it. Can December 2010 come any quicker?
So you bought the popular HTC Touch Pro 2 but are having problems living with Windows Mobile 6.1. Well, we may just have a cure. If you happened to be stalking around the forums (they are the happiest place on Earth, but you knew that) around 1 Eastern you may have noticed an unofficial update to the WM6.5 ROM, with HTC’s Sense UI and T-Mobile USA features (like My Faves), that could be downloaded. Well, the should be famous T1 Connect went ahead and tried it himself, and it works. Unfortunately, the original download link no longer has the file. Don’t worry though, because T1 has you covered there as well. If you shoot him a Personal Message in the forums, I’m sure he will be more than happy to send you the ROM for the TP2 and the Dash 3G. Now, if you are worried about this somewhat shady download and update process, then just hold tight because we are hearing that the official update will be coming around the 20th of January. Leave your love in the comments!
With Android, Blackberry and the iPhone getting all the attention lately it’s easy to forget Windows Mobile who paved the way for most of what we see today in the smartphone world. Originally our sources had pointed to a January 6th release date for Windows Mobile 6.5 for both the Touch Pro2 and Dash 3G. An email this afternoon indicates that we could be looking at a 2-3 week release date delay. Unfortunately our source can’t nail it down so at this point; we’re going back to square one until we can get some concrete info on a drop date. Sorry Windows Mobile fans, we’re not forgetting about you as the HTC HD2 looms large and frankly, I can’t wait to get my hands on that sucker. Can’t wait indeed.
We knew Twitter was becoming a heavy source for all kinds of information, but breaking news from the tech world hadn’t yet gone that way. Don’t tell that to the folks from HTC Russia who stated through Twitter, the HTC HD2 (expected to drop on T-Mobile sometime next year) is going to be the only HTC “communicator” phone to receive the Windows Mobile 7 update. That’s good and all, but for the T-Mobile faithful, how about some Windows Mobile 6.5 love for devices that are actually being sold today?
That’s really all there is to say here…the guys at WMExperts say this is a likely scenario as the WM7 required specs are all met by the HTC HD2.
It’s starting off as a very slow news week and understandably so, with the holidays approaching we don’t expect much in the way of surprise announcements. That being said, last week wasn’t exactly void of goodies and the news of a leaked T-Mobile USA rom for the HTC HD2 in the wild almost certainly made Windows Mobile enthusiasts jump for joy. What appears to be the US rom has shown in a video courtesy of Italian blog, hdblog.it.
Apparently trance music is all the rage for showing off foreign phones that we here in the states can only drool dream about; this video shows a truly awesome looking experience. Don’t take my word for it though, watch the full vid and see if Windows Mobile is ready to make a comeback.
Windows Mobile and T-Mobile fans, this is going to make your day a little brighter. According to our friends at WMExperts who have received some ninja screenshots of a Rom file showing clear support for the HTC HD2 and T-Mobile USA. Having called for this device to hit T-Mobile way back in the middle of October, we’re happy to keep seeing further confirmation that it will launch on our favorite carrier. Of course, we knew it was scheduled to hit the US somewhere and frankly, if I were HTC I’d much rather launch a device on a carrier that doesn’t have people trying to intentionally shut them down. Hey, that’s just one man’s opinion though. Regardless, with the Rom file came a few more specs, listed below:
The good news is that this isn’t the 400th article this month talking about a potential Sprint/T-Mobile merger. The better news is that this rumor has a stronger chance of coming true than a Sprint/T-Mobile merger. One of my trusty ninjas hit me up tonight with information claiming that a Windows Mobile 6.5 update will see the light of day for the TouchPro2 and Dash 3G beginning January 6th, 2010. No other info was offered up with this date, though I assume it’ll be a pretty straight forward and available from T-Mobile.com. More details will be posted as we work to confirm this date, that while unconfirmed looks to be pretty solid.
A while back we showed you that nice little leak, where it is clearly pointed out that the HTC HD2 was coming to T-Mobile USA. Today HTC has confirmed that the HTC HD2 will be arriving to the U.S Q1 2010–T-Mobile anyone? And by the looks of it, the HD2 will be sporting Windows Mobile with HTC’s lovely Sense UI. We already have the Touch Pro II, and this would be a great addition to T-Mobile’s Windows Mobile handset lineup. If you missed the unboxing video click here to check it out. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed and hope this bad boy lands on T-Mobile USA early 2010. Feel free to express your thoughts/opinions in the comments! Will you be getting the HD2 if it comes to T-Mobile?
What do you get when you cross two guys in lab coats, lame jokes and the Windows Mobile app store? You get this advertisement and the ability to watch once, laugh hysterically and then do it all over again. Seriously, this is bad. I know I am not a Windows Mobile fan so it’s not as if I’m rooting for anyone here, but if they were hoping for a turn around, this is not the way to do it. Either way, watching this half a dozen times or so might make you completely forget all the problems in the world and give you a few moments of reflection on how awesome ads like these are. In any case, we hope that devices like the HTC HD2 bring a much need change in how people view Windows Mobile these days. Until then however, Microsoft needs to fire this marketing company.
