webConnect Rocket Officially Announced, Available March 14th

web-connect-rocket-featured

T-Mobile has officially announced (again) the availability of the webConnect Rocket, its first HSPA+ data connect card.  Available starting March 14th, the webConnect Rocket will run $99.  Along with the announcement of their very first HSPA+ data card, T-Mobile has revised their webConnect data plans.  Customers can now choose between an Even More webConnect data plan, which requires a life sentence two-year contract, and get 5GB for $60 per month or 200MB for $30 per month.  Even More Plus fans can take advantage of slightly lower webConnect data plans which will charge $50 per month for 5GB or $20 per month for 200MB.  Keep in mind that all plans have overage charges costing $0.20 per megabyte.

T-Mobile also stated that their entire network is now HSPA 7.2Mbps capable covering more than 273 cities and 206 million people. Also note that the HSPA+ network is only available in Philadelphia at the moment, but T-Mobile has plans to cover most of the network by the end of 2010.

For a glimpse at HSPA+ goodness, take a look at this preview and this one too!

HTC HD2 Dropping With Goodies, Webconnect Rockets In

IMG_1498

Having hinted last week that the HTC HD2 would come with something unexpected, this morning T-Mobile announced the HTC HD2 would come packed with an entertainment bonanza. Like Blockbuster On Demand for downloading movies on the device or Barnes and Noble downloadable e-reader content and last but definitely not least, Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen included on the microSD card. Any phone that comes with both Transformers movies is a must buy for me! Say what you want, but Michael Bay movies are just “explosively” fun. The best news? The HTC HD2 will be exclusive to Magenta making you the envy of HTC Sense lovers everywhere. This phone just can’t truly be enjoyed without 3G speeds but I’m doing a damn good job of trying! The bigger questions is when or if the HD2 will receive an update to Windows Phone 7 in the future but for the moment, enjoy its 4.3 inches of excellence! Officially expected to drop in March, we’re still expecting the 24th as the leaked retail slide showed.

Of course, not to be outshone by the HTC HD2 is the Webconnect Rocket, T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ USB modem capable of the 21Mbps speed we are all drooling over. Of course, the launch will have to wait a little for a footprint to use as the service is still only available in the Philadelphia area. We know that the east and west coasts are going to be the first areas where you will be able to fully enjoy data speeds that make DSL look like child’s play. The Webconnect rocket drops in March, though the exact date is unknown.

Full press release after the break!

It’s Friday And Here Are Some Things I Missed

cowboy-backlit-767158

Well its Friday Tmonews readers, and this week is going to close out well for T-mobile lovers, especially those in the Android camp. Your serving of Donut is underway, bringing with it a host of enhancements to the Android experience. With Android in mind, the Cliq pricing brought a flurry of traffic this week as the next big thing in magentaville came down at a disappointingly high $199.99. For some reason T-mobile is just in love with that price point, much to our chagrin. These weren’t the only happenings for magenta this week as the following was not given front page billing, but not forgotten either.

  • Sams Club has discontinued the sales of T-mobile products and services as of October 1st. As Sams Club has a 30 day buyers remorse period returns can still be delivered by Sams Club for a refund, however, any exchanges will be handled by customer care.
  • On September 30th, the T-mobile Connection Manager 2.04 software update was made available. Providing customers with an enhanced display screen and user interface improvements; it can be downloaded at http://www.t-mobile.com/webconnectupgrade/
  • For those brand new to Android and wondering what the whole Donut hoopla is about, here is a short list of enhancements that Donut will bring to your device:

  • Updated search experience that makes it easier to search various sources, such as: browser bookmarks and history, contacts, and the Web, directly from the home screen.
  • New battery usage screen which allows customers to see which applications and services are consuming battery.
  • An integrated camera, camcorder, and gallery experience that allows customers to switch between still and video capture mode with a touch screen switch.
  • Updated Voice Search, with faster response and deeper integration with native applications, including the ability to dial contacts.
  • An improved Android Market experience that makes it easier to discover great applications.

That’s all for now!

WebConnect Promo Plans In The House

Webconnect_553x480ad-090306

T-Mobile has yet to make deep inroads in the 3G market considering the lateness of their network. However, they are, in this instance, trying to undercut the competition starting with a price cut of $10 on their webConnect data plans. With a smaller 3G footprint, we’ve long discussed T-mobile’s need for a competitive advantage over its larger rivals and undercutting their data connect plans is a great place to start. The webConnect customer can often be a frequently traveling businessman who is looking for reliable and inexpensive service and that’s where T-mobile can step up to the plate in a big way. The $59.99 data plan often catches people off guard, and starting off at the $49.99 price point for T-Mobile employees can be a great way to say, “Hey look, T-mobile is the best value.”

The offer runs from September 30th-January 12th after which the prices will jump back to $39.99/59.99.

• 200 MB data bucket• $29.99 monthly recurring charge during the promotion• Ideal for people who occasionally want 3G access for accessing the Web or e-mail, but primarily plan to be stationary (coffee shops, airports, hotels) with Web access via T-Mobile HotSpot for Wi-Fi.• The monthly recurring charge will change to $39.99 when the promotion ends.

• 5 GB data bucket• $49.99 monthly recurring charge during the promotion• Considered our most generous service plan for those who plan to frequently use our 3G network to connect to the internet while on the go.• The monthly recurring charge will change to $59.99 when the promotion ends.•

Webconnect Launches Today

webconnectt

As originally thought, as originally detailed, T-mobile’s first entrance into the data broadband data card world launched this morning. Webconnect, starting at $99.99 for a 1 year contract and as show above, $49.99 for a 2 year contract will offer you up to 5GB of 3G speeds per month for $59.99. Priced right in line with the competition, this is T-mobile’s first data card release to  take advantage of their 3G network and first reports show that T-mobile is ready to roll with their young network. Check out Crunchgearand Gizmodo for quick rundowns on how this little USB stick performed during its first speed runs. Still no word on Mac connectivity, only that its expected in the “coming months,” so PC users, this is all yours for now.

More Webconnect Details

webconnect

Having already confirmed the existence of the webconnect 3G T-mobile data card that is forthcoming later this month, we no longer need to rumor monger and can bring some solid pricing information to the table. First and foremost the $59.99 monthly pricing stands at a 5GB monthly allowance including unlimited hotspot access. Usage above and beyond the 5GB monthly allowance will be allocated at $.20MB and voice usage will be totally barred. Sticking the sim-card from the webconnect data stick into a phone will not allow voice calls. Domestic roaming will be blocked but international roaming will be allowed based on currently available roaming rates. Postpaid customers will be able to take advantage of this offer right from the get-go with flexplay subscribers to follow.

Now, given the comments following the last post regarding the 5GB cap and the small uproar over T-mobile’s desire not to undercut the competition with either more data or lower pricing or a combination of both we take a look at what exactly 5GB of data can look like.

At 5GB of usage, you can do over 1,700,000 emails at 1 page no attachments OR look at close to 35,000 webpages OR do 1700 20 page powerpoint presentations OR download close to 1300 3 minute songs. Each one of those independently would take you to the magic 5GB cap number and anything above and beyond would it that $0.20 per 1MB overage charge.

To give you a better look at what overages could look like, it would take 341 emails to hit the 1MB overage cap,  OR 6 web pages, OR .025 of a 3 minute song, OR 0.3 of a powerpoint presentation and a patridge in a pear tree.
