In a change of pace, something is actually released early, kind of. The last we heard, the official T-Mobile release of Windows Mobile 6.5 would be on January 20th (along with a laundry list of other happenings). It seems, though, that the link for the direct download has been leaked. This update is for the Dash 3G and Touch Pro 2. Just head on over to the link, enter in your IMEI, wait, and presto, WM 6.5 just in time for the WM 6.6 or 7 to be announced. So head on over and get your fresh upgrade. Leave your thoughts and experiences in the comments, or discuss it in the Forums!

While we await the arrival of Windows Mobile 6.5 one week from today, those looking to score the HTC HD2 can expect to enjoy whatever goodness Windows Mobile 7 brings. Windows Mobile 7 isn’t expected to drop until November but after a false Twitter alarm, HTC has confirmed the HTC HD2 will receive the free update. Little is known about Windows Mobile 7 at this point, but Microsoft hopefully has put some serious muscle behind it as the competition has all but stolen the media attention. We’ll know more next month when WM7 is introduced at Mobile World Congress.

Phonearena

Those TouchPro2 and Dash3G customers eagerly awaiting the release of 6.5 next Wednesday can take a look at this list sent over to me last night highlighting some of the expected upgrades:

On January 20, the Windows Mobile 6.5 software upgrade will be available for customers with the T-Mobile Touch Pro2 and Dash 3G. Customers can obtain the update on T-Mobile.com at www.t-mobile.com/wmupgrade/.
Windows Mobile 6.5 includes some exciting enhancements, such as:
Windows Marketplace for Mobile
With Windows Marketplace for Mobile, customers can choose from a large library of mobile applications to purchase and download either through their phones or from their PCs.
Applications include games, business tools, and social networking.
Customers can check ratings and read reviews before they download an application.
Microsoft My Phone
Microsoft My Phone allows customers to easily store their phone’s data to a password protected Microsoft Web site for free.
Customers can back up their phone automatically, including SMS, MMS, and memory card files, to a secure Microsoft server.
Customers can share photos on their favorite social networking sites, access their contacts, text messages, and more online.
Customers can recover data from a lost phone and remotely wipe their phone if needed.
An active Windows Live account is required for this feature.
Visual Voicemail
Mobile Backup
The Windows Mobile 6.5 software update will not be sent to existing customers over-the-air. All customers must download the update at www.t-mobile.com/wmupgrade/. Existing customers will be notified of the update via a free T-Mobile SMS beginning January 20.

So you bought the popular HTC Touch Pro 2 but are having problems living with Windows Mobile 6.1. Well, we may just have a cure. If you happened to be stalking around the forums (they are the happiest place on Earth, but you knew that) around 1 Eastern you may have noticed an unofficial update to the WM6.5 ROM, with HTC’s Sense UI and T-Mobile USA features (like My Faves), that could be downloaded. Well, the should be famous T1 Connect went ahead and tried it himself, and it works. Unfortunately, the original download link no longer has the file. Don’t worry though, because T1 has you covered there as well. If you shoot him a Personal Message in the forums, I’m sure he will be more than happy to send you the ROM for the TP2 and the Dash 3G. Now, if you are worried about this somewhat shady download and update process, then just hold tight because we are hearing that the official update will be coming around the 20th of January. Leave your love in the comments!

TmoNews Forums, with a lot of thanks to T1 Connect, oh, and everything is originally from the T-mobile Forums

And now, a brief message and some photos from the friendly T1 Connect after the break.

Update: Direct download links added. Thanks again T1 Connect

Touch Pro 2

I guess you’ve seen and read the thread by now, so here are the pics. As you can see the myfaves, windows mobile 6.5 and all the rom info is there along with the installer. Also the radio is the newest thing out there and is included in the official htc WM installer and not in custom ones because they cannot do radio and rom at the same time. This rom also includes visual voicemail and the official tmobile visual voicemail that was activated for my phone via tech support. Also myfaves are included and cannot be duplicated in a custom rom, both dash 3g and tp2 are good to go (pending on the Dash 3G, but things look good).

The good news is that this isn’t the 400th article this month talking about a potential Sprint/T-Mobile merger. The better news is that this rumor has a stronger chance of coming true than a Sprint/T-Mobile merger. One of my trusty ninjas hit me up tonight with information claiming that a Windows Mobile 6.5 update will see the light of day for the TouchPro2 and Dash 3G beginning January 6th, 2010. No other info was offered up with this date, though I assume it’ll be a pretty straight forward and available from T-Mobile.com. More details will be posted as we work to confirm this date, that while unconfirmed looks to be pretty solid.

If you have been looking to pick up a TouchPro2 and the price tag has been scaring you off, then do we have a deal for you. Courtesy of WMdeals you can snag a TouchPro2 for $49.99, with the activation of a new line. I’m not sure if you can snag this deal without the whole data plan requirement, but if you could, the cost of purchasing the phone with an add-on line here and paying for a 2-year contract is still less than the upfront price of purchasing from T-mobile directly. Not sure if my little scheme would play out, but $49.99 is a damn good deal. Hit the link for terms and conditions and shop away!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

With the recent furor over the Touch Pro2’s rumored pricing, we thought this would be a good time to bring up something that may have long been forgotten by many of you since we first provided the details back in November. Officially announced by T-Mobile in February of this year, the Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) pretty much allows you to lower the amount you pay for your phone upfront and spread it out in 3 other out-of-store payments with no interest charges or extra fees whatsoever.

While the price each person pays in store vs the other three payments will be absolutely different for everyone, here is a [admittedly confusing at first glance] summary from our first article on the EIP:

Either the difference between your credit limit and the purchase price of the phone is charged <s>to your first bill</s> in store -OR- the total purchase price divided by four monthly payments is charged <s>to your first bill</s> in store, whichever is GREATER. The other three monthly payments would equal the remaining balance divided by three and would all be the same.

In a [hopefully clearer] summary [of our summary] your credit history will be looked at, but only to determine how much “credit” they can extend to you. That credit will be the amount you can walk out of the store without paying. Make sense? You pay more up front if your purchase divided by four is the greater amount, irregardless of amount of credit extended.

Oh yes, you can also add extra accessories on to your total for split payments, and whatever else you want to get in store.

Eagle eyed forums member mobo316 spotted T-Mobile’s user manual(PDF) for the Touch Pro2! For those of you fanatics that just can’t get enough of this upcoming device, settle in for a good read of the manual, chock full of pictures and plenty of how-to goodness. A very interesting tidbit for anyone interested in using a memory card is page 38. Yes, by now we all know there is a microSD slot on the SIDE of the phone, leading… umm… all of us (?) to believe that a memory card could be inserted and removed with relative simplicity, but all is not as straightforward as it may seem. The back cover of the phone must be removed (according to the manual) in order to press down on the microSD card until it clicks into place – Though the card is inserted into the side of the phone. Not having handled the phone ourselves, we are not too sure if this is just to ease the opening of the microSD slot cover (which apparently is a little tough to open without using a firm fingernail, according to TmoNews forum-goers who have demoed the device) or if the back cover must be removed in order to access the extra room necessary to push down on the card. Well… at least the battery doesn’t need to be removed. If you can confirm the actual usage of this slot, please let us know in the comments!

There’s more after the link below.

On a brief note about the screen, there seem to be quite a few haters people out there who are not too fond of the Touch Pro2’s resistive touch screen… well, any resistive touch screen anyway. While we aren’t getting into a debate on the merits of capacitive vs resistive screens, perhaps it’s worth pointing out that the TP2 is not in any way solely restricted to a stylus or fingernail – it’s just an added bonus. Sure, we’ve read of some complaints of the screen sensitivity of the original Touch Pro (non T-Mobile device), but reports on this device seem on-par for being very sensitive and very responsive to any sort of touch – just ask docprego in his popular forums thread. Oh, and the manual is chock full of images of icons big enough to press on with the use of fingers, as well as full on advocating of finger gestures (of the non-stylus kind).

Just an observation.

Curious on how you’d be taking incoming calls? Hey, it’s a little thing anyway, who actually makes calls on their phones these days anyway, right? Regardless, if you’re into that whole “talking to other people” thing and they happen to call you, the decision to answer a call (aside from simply accepting with the TALK/SEND button or rejecting with the END button) can be made by a full swipe to the left to answer, a full swipe to the right to reject, or a tap on the “Mute” button to simply silence the ringer. Interestingly enough, thanks to the internal G-Sensor, the phone can also be muted simply by placing the phone face down on a flat surface. Incoming call from Aunt Jemima? Take her smiling, syrupy face from your photo caller ID and place it face down on the table… that’ll shut her up. Then again… if you’re having waffles…

And for those of you who love conference calling, this phone is definitely for you. What with the dedicated two-way speaker on the back, complete with dedicated mute button, and plenty of options for calling contacts for conference directly from text messages, emails, and contact lists… you’ve got it made. The only question remaining is: Will the Touch Pro2 somehow override T-Mobile’s limit of 3 calling parties per line? (That is, each caller can only connect two people into a conference at a time) A page directly out of the manual clearly shows 5 people in a conference, all dialed from the same phone (well, okay so it’s implied, following pg 65 which showed 5 contacts checked for dialing). Again, only an observation… and this coming from the T-Mobile manual… something that would be nice if it actually worked. Well, for those who call lots of people at the same time (unlimited loyalty ftw?)

Below we have an image proving the TP2’s TV-Out capabilities for those who didn’t know, as well as an image of the customizable programs tab – like a start menu for your apps.
