OTA Update Arrives Without Issue For T-Mobile G1 Users

thumb_450_tmobile-g1-2

Well, it looks like T-Mobile delivered on its promise of releasing an OTA(Over-The-Air) update for G1 users by their self-imposed deadline of March 15th.  Even though this update only brings forth an improvement in call quality, it’s nice to see that is was able without issue; unlike the experience Motorola Cliq and Droid Eris users suffered. If you haven’t seen the update yet, you should be seeing it very soon. So, the next question is will the G1 get another update?  Android 2.1, here we come? Time will tell, but we hope so!

Motorola Acknowledges Cliq Update Fiasco

photo 3_wm

Well, folks, it seems that the Motorola is finally acknowledging the issues that the Cliq 1.3.18 update (you know, the one that transformed Cliqs into bricks) caused users.  In a statement made to the blog These Are The Droids, Motorola said:

Last week, the CLIQ 1.3.18 over-the-air software update began rolling out to consumers.  While the vast majority of updates were successful, a very small number of consumers reported a date error and found that, after factory resetting their device, their phone was not functioning properly. We have identified a workaround solution for these consumers, which can be found on the Motorola support forum (http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/us/support/tmo/index.html).

To our consumers, we apologize and are working swiftly to reconcile the situation. We are also revising the over-the-air software update so that this workaround solution is no longer needed. Consumers will be notified on their device when the revised update is available.

If you would like to provide more guidance to your readers, below is additional information for consumers:

To our consumers who downloaded the update and their device is working properly, no further action is needed. To our consumers who never received a notification to download the update, please do not take further action. You will be notified on your device when the revised update is available to you. To consumers who received an error or whose device date reads December 31, 1969, please visit the support site listed above for assistance.

Good to see Motorola reaching out to their customers.  Let us know how the workaround works!

T-Mobile G1 Update Rolling Out

G1_minor_update_wm

Let me  just start off by saying that this is NOT the update G1 owners have been patiently waiting for.  Instead, it’s a minor update exactly like the one the original myTouch 3G received earlier this month.  The Android 1.6 update (DMD64) OTA is rolling out starting today, February 26th, and will gradually make it to the masses by March 15th.  The update improves G1 user’s call performance and does not include any additional feature enhancements.  To receive the update, G1 owners must have the required Android data plan added.  G1 owners will receive a notification on their device giving them to choice to “Install Now” or “Install Later”.  After you install the update, the handset will reboot and you’re done! Enjoy the improved call quality!

CLIQ Succumbs To Firmware Downfall

funny-pictures-cat-moon

If you haven’t gotten around to downloading the new firmware 1.3.18, STOP!  As the old saying goes, ” if it ain’t broke…don’t fix it”.  In this case, if you haven’t updated yet, you may want to consider holding off.  For Motorola CLIQ users, T-Mobile has issued a warning advising users that have updated to the new firmware not to to use the MASTER RESET button (I know you want to).  It appears that ever since the intoduction of the new firmware, users have become overwhelmed, ambushed, and bombarded by freezes as long as supermarket lines, down landlines, and a host of problems that include time travel, taking users back to December 1969.  What we didn’t ask for was time travel, but the Motorola CLIQ gives it all: connectivity issues, barred access to MOTOBLUR, problems with display dimming, and keypad issues.  The guys over at Engadget suggest clearing your old messages to help with messaging problems but that’s all as far as solutions go.  For access to more solutions and how to get your life back…stay tuned to TmoNews, your number one source for all your T-Mobile needs.

Motorola Cliq Update Delayed

cliqupdate1

Update: Some users in the comments and via Twitter are reporting that if you do a manual search for updates, its available!

To say that a lot of you have been angrily awaiting the expected Motorola Cliq update this week would be putting it mildly. Frustration has turned to anger judging by the comments as Motorola Cliq fans all but demand their updates. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the Motorola OTA rollout timetable usually spanning across a number of days, there is a good reason it has yet to see appear on your phones. As it turns out there has been a slight delay, till the 22nd in fact. Counting today, that’s just four days and since you’ve waited this long for improvements, another few days really shouldn’t hurt. However, if you’ve been wondering just where the hell your update is, guess you’re waiting a little bit longer.

behold2updates

Just as I was preparing this story, @T-Mobile_USA went and spoiled the fun stating that the Behold 2 would be getting some updates soon. Sorry, just maintenance updates! The update should start rolling out between February 18th and February 25th. Customers purchasing the phone on February 26th or beyond should receive the update sometime after purchase, as it will be pushed weekly to new buyers.

Thankfully, our ninjas went to work and got us some info earlier this morning regarding this and here is what we have so far:

Known issues solved:

  • Bluetooth error: Unable to Pair or Unable to connect device
  • Battery indicator may display more charge than the phone has
  • Holding menu opens keypad, but does not respond, now goes to contacts
  • Phone constantly vibrates
  • Memory card un-mounts and re-mounts intermittently
  • Music plays automatically when accessing the music player
  • Incoming emails do not show the return email address
  • Corporate emails stop syncing

New additions:

  • Evernote application added
  • Where’s Waldo game added
  • Midnight Bowl 2 game added
  • Music Player auto-play upon launch corrected
  • “About” phone menu added to Settings, Quick List>Settings>About Phone
  • Boot screen animation change (now Samsung logo)
  • Delay reduction for proximity sensor while on a call
  • Battery icon status in notification bar now matches screen lock battery status

Small OTA Update for MyTouch3G

t-mobile-mytouch-3g-ofc

This is kind of a good news, bad news (well, mediocre) post.  Good News: anyone with a MyTouch should be getting an over the air update.  Bad News: this isn’t Android 2.1, or even 2.1.  Instead, this update is to make sure that you get a nice little notification for missed calls.  Not a huge update, but important nonetheless.  If you are getting this update, or just have some thoughts on the matter, sound off in the comments!

OTA Update For Motorola Cliq Today?

IMG00010-20091201-1103

Reports are coming in regarding an anticipated Motorola Cliq OTA update that hopefully addresses a number of lingering issues. Set to improve battery life, touchscreen and Bluetooth response, the Cliq is in need of a fast fix. With yesterday’s reports of less than impressive sales combined with a rumored shift from T-Mobile marketing buzz for the Cliq, Motorola needed to address these issues quickly. And while the Cliq may be overshadowed by the Droid in terms of marketing power right now, as the first phone to show off MotoBlur, we expect Motorola to address concerns in a more than timely manner. We can only hope Cliq users see benefits from today’s update and we’ll report back as we learn more.
