Presenting “what’s happening in the forums” as it becomes a weekly (sometimes weekend) staple on a random day during the week. We’re bringing you all the fun that happens inside the TmoNews forums!
How about that Fender edition MyTouch 1.2 with Eric Clapton? Chalk up another celeb endorsement from T-Mobile to help bring in the customers. Perhaps you’re still looking for info on that T-Mobile 7.2 Mbps rollout? Other people are looking too; join them in your hunt for faster speeds. How about the Nexus One upgrade change/refund showing Google is actually taking customer complaints seriously and moving swiftly to rectify them. One of our exclusive stories this week was the rumor of a MyTouch “Slide” coming out. Though not everyone thinks it’s such a hot idea, do you? Lots of buzz this week in my in box surrounding the sudden disappearance of the Touch Pro2 from the T-Mobile website, don’t worry, we didn’t think anything of it. Of course, TouchPro2 fans everywhere should be ready for the Windows Mobile 6.5 update next week bringing all sorts of goodies. That’s all for now, unless of course you’re a Modern Warfare 2 fan, then you should check out this thread!
Here is today’s best news though. The good folks and friends of ours over at Phonedog have a “Pantech Blitz” going on right now for their One-Paw Bandit. They’ve asked us to help spread the word. It’s not a T-Mobile phone you say? I know but this is how I see it: win it, sell it, and put the money toward a Nexus One/HTC HD2. Simple enough right? Show some love to these guys and play the game, they’ve been among our favorite sites for some time!

Once again our old friend, SVP of Engineering Neville Ray spoke to Moconews regarding T-Mobile’s commitment to serving 200 million users with 3G by the end of 2009. Once again, Ray reiterated the promise of HSPA 7.2 and HSPA+ 3G services, both of which will start widespread rollouts next year.
There to defend the carrier’s role was T-Mobile’s SVP of Engineering Neville Ray, who also spoke to Moconews after the event. He said they’ll be serving 200 million users with 3G by the end of the year (which is a smaller footprint than both Verizon and AT&T). But that they’ll leap-frog ahead, by upgrading those markets to HSPA 7.2, which is already supported in most of the handsets being sold today. Then, the carrier will quickly upgrade to HSPA 21, which he said can offer 3-5 mbps with bursts up to 10-12 mbps.
One of the more interesting mentions here is the small jab at AT&T and their overloaded networks performance, courtesy of the iPhone. When asked if he thought T-Mobile could handle the iPhone users “thirst for broadband?” Neville responded with a resounding yes: “Absolutely. We could do it, for sure. We like to think that we would not have the same level of problems.”
I have to say we love that level of confidence from T-Mobile, who while committed to the Android platform has yet to speak out or publicly express an interest in placing the iPhone in their lineup. While rumors continue to swirl and analysts continue to predict, T-Mobile is staying tightlipped on whether or not they would even make a play for the idevice if/when the AT&T exclusivity deal runs out. Regardless, we’re glad to know that they are confident enough to handle the bandwidth users would gobble up and create a user experience that has plunged AT&T into such negative light.

Well somehow this skipped our radar yesterday but apparently T-Mobile laid out “aggressive” plans to deploy 7.2 Mbps HSPA through all 3G spectrum by year’s end. Even more noteworthy is T-Mobile’s continued discussion regarding an HSPA+ rollout in 2010 that would be a “fairly broad scale” rollout. T-Mobile continued to emphasize 3G coverage will expand to 200 million pops before the end of 2009 with 240 cities currently covered. This contrasts to the AT&T and Verizon plans to launch LTE in the coming 2010-2011 timeframe which allows for a competitive environment as the initial LTE launches will compete with HSPA+ for speed. T-Mobile is apparently emphasizing that it will not have to pour “tens of billions of dollars behind to achieve” these speeds and can do so with a relatively easy upgrade to HSPA+. Still, we know T-Mobile has plans for 4G but the HSPA+ speeds give them some leeway in rolling that out. Customers will see other carriers progressing with technology still, hear that “4G” phrase and assume other companies have better, faster service. It’ll be up to T-Mobile to disprove that.
Combined with this announcement was the release of the T-Mobile JET, the second USB broadband modem in the magenta arsenal. For customers still looking to hop on that contract bandwagon this little goody will cost you zero, zilch to pickup and $49.99 to run monthly. Want to run sans contract, $150 dollars will net you the Jet with that promotional $49.99 offering running through mid-January.
