With T-Mobile promising to roll out HSPA 7.2 by years end, and HSPA+ 21Mbps by the middle of 2010, a few lucky residents of Philly have already been blessed with T-Mobile’s ultra fast 3G network. A lucky individual over at jkontherun was kind enough to share his hands-on experience with T-Mobile’s HSPA+, currently live in the Philadelphia area. Using a T-Mobile webConnect USB stick the individual started out and tested T-Mobile’s current 3G network, which resulted in speeds around 1.11 Mbps download and 0.67 Mbps upload speeds. Then the individual used the same hardware in the HSPA+ test network, and noticed speeds noticeably increased, yielding, 5.58 Mbps download and 1.23 Mbps upload. That’s some blazing fast mobile speeds! The individual also tested the HSPA+ network out on the Nokia N900 which supports T-Mobile USA 3G bands. Earlier in November, reports were coming in of a few cities supposedly getting a taste of T-Mobile HSPA 7.2 speeds. Our friends over at AndroidandMe, reached out to T-Mobile, to confirm whether or not the HSPA 7.2 launch date had been adjusted and received a very good response. To summarize, T-Mobile is sticking to its previous statement, which was to roll out HSPA 7.2Mbps by the end of 2009. T-Mobile also states that they will be integrating HSPA+ 21Mbps into their 3G network in the next several months with “broad national deployment anticipate for mid-2010″. No specific date was provided by T-Mobile as to when they plan to roll out HSPA 7.2, but we think it will be just in time for Christmas! I don’t know about you, but this is some exciting news! Its time to show AT&T who really has the “Nation’s fastest 3G network”! Once again our old friend, SVP of Engineering Neville Ray spoke to Moconews regarding T-Mobile’s commitment to serving 200 million users with 3G by the end of 2009. Once again, Ray reiterated the promise of HSPA 7.2 and HSPA+ 3G services, both of which will start widespread rollouts next year.
There to defend the carrier’s role was T-Mobile’s SVP of Engineering Neville Ray, who also spoke to Moconews after the event. He said they’ll be serving 200 million users with 3G by the end of the year (which is a smaller footprint than both Verizon and AT&T). But that they’ll leap-frog ahead, by upgrading those markets to HSPA 7.2, which is already supported in most of the handsets being sold today. Then, the carrier will quickly upgrade to HSPA 21, which he said can offer 3-5 mbps with bursts up to 10-12 mbps.
One of the more interesting mentions here is the small jab at AT&T and their overloaded networks performance, courtesy of the iPhone. When asked if he thought T-Mobile could handle the iPhone users “thirst for broadband?” Neville responded with a resounding yes: “Absolutely. We could do it, for sure. We like to think that we would not have the same level of problems.”
I have to say we love that level of confidence from T-Mobile, who while committed to the Android platform has yet to speak out or publicly express an interest in placing the iPhone in their lineup. While rumors continue to swirl and analysts continue to predict, T-Mobile is staying tightlipped on whether or not they would even make a play for the idevice if/when the AT&T exclusivity deal runs out. Regardless, we’re glad to know that they are confident enough to handle the bandwidth users would gobble up and create a user experience that has plunged AT&T into such negative light.

We’re holding this in the rumor column for now, as it appears to be a real screenshot sent our way but we’re still working toward 100% confirmation. We have, what appears to be a list of 3G cities going live this year for magenta. Its a pretty compiled list and is sure to please quite a few of you who are still oh so patiently waiting for the greenlight! While we want to reinforce the idea that we haven’t confirmed this list, it seems pretty legit and unless its a cruel joke from an AT&T fanboi who just wants to tease us, this should hopefully give those of you left waiting for 3G a better idea of what to expect this year. Did your city make the list??

While its certainly been a while without any 3G launches coming out of T-mobile, that doesn’t mean they aren’t forging ahead to bring coverage to your neck of the woods. The boys at engadgetmobile caught wind of a T-mobile report “shoehorned” in with the Samsung Memoir launch that outlines T-mobile’s plan to cover 200 million Americans by the end of 2009 with 3G coverage.
Considering T-mobile had “more than 100 million American’s” covered at the end of 2008 a 100% increase in 3G coverage is most welcome. As engadget points out however, “more” than 100 million could mean higher figures like 150 million American’s covered but either way, 200 million people covered sounds damn good to us. I just hope for those that are still clamoring, still waiting for that 3G logo to appear in the upper corners of their phone that this comes as great news, that some day soon you will experience the joys of 3G voice and data coverage.
