Free (Samsung) Phones For All!

untitled2

That is possibly our best graphic to date, wouldn’t you say? Anyways, time to bring our users some exciting news….that is, if you were looking at picking up a new Samsung phone along with a hefty 2 year contract. Starting on September 3rd, and ending on October 14th, all T-mobile Samsung devices will be free. The higher end phones will in fact have mail in rebates (MIRs), but in the end T-mobile will stick to their word by offering all their Samsung phones at $00.00. Does anyone get the feeling that T-mobile is trying to move through their inventory of phones they know they wont sell after the release of the 3G TM 506, Dream, Kickstart, ZiNE, and other great upcoming phones? With the Samsung T919 coming in November, and a high-end Qwert Samsung coming in early 2009, T-mobile isn’t dumping Samsung all together, but just blowing through the Old low to mid end phones, before starting a long-awaited push for high end phones. We know that the T109 is coming in October…but hey, prepaid customers need some cheap phones too! Here is the pricing info:

  • Samsung T219 – Free
  • Samsung T229 – Free
  • Samsung T339 – Free
  • Samsung T409 – Free
  • Samsung T429 – Free
  • Samsung T439 – Free

The HTC Dream WILL have GPS

untitled1

If the above picture doesn’t prove it, we don’t know what does. Recently we have been getting a lot ton of questions about whether the HTC Dream will have GPS or not. For a lot of people that will make or break the phone, and we’re here with some good news. From the looks of Google’s top 50 Android programs (PDF) from the Android developers challenge, it looks like a very large amount of the programs use GPS in some aspect. To view the PDF of the top 50 applications, click here. If you look on pages 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 23, and many more, you will see a program that has integrated GPS, or is fully relient on GPS. This leaves no doubt in our mind that the HTC Dream will have GPS. That, and the fact that T-mobile plans on integrating GPS in most of their upcoming smartphones. October 13th can’t come soon enough.

T-mobile is scaring us…

motorola-motozine-zn5

T-mobile, what happened? You went from releasing phones like the W490 (three times, with new colors each time), and having the internet crawling with complaints about your phone selection, to having some awesome 3G and UMA phones being added to your lineup. You were just waiting to role out 3G before you unleashed your phone arsenal on us wern’t you? Here are two words you don’t hear often in the same sentance: T-mobile, and first. Well T-mobile USA will be the first carrier to offer a 5 megapixel camera phone in the United States. Make that two phones with 5 megapixel cameras. The Motorola ZiNE (ZN5), sporting a 5 megapixel Kodak camera, with a flash and autofocus, has a planned release date of November 3rd. Interestingly enough, the 5 megapixel, touchscreen, 3G, Samsung Roxy/Tocco/T919 also has a November 3rd release date. This far in advance these dates may change slightly, but remember remember the 3rd of November, as that is when these devices are slated to be released. Both phone are expected to be $199.99 with a 2 year contract, which we don’t see as a bad deal for a phone that can pass as a digital camera, music player, or cell phone. Of course this far in advance the prices are never set in stone.

For those that don’t want to wait, and plan on getting the upcoming, aGPS enabled, Sony Ericsson TM506, it was just added to T-mobile’s site. It also looks like DigitalBurn got their hands on TM506 last night and got some nice unboxing pictures and a video. Check it out here. On its release on September 3rd, the TM506 will be $79.99 with a 2 year contract, with significant price drops in both October and November.

Do you like e-mail? Take a peek…

8-20-08-peek-email-handheld

Well here is a great phone gadget if you like E-mail, and nothing else. Peek, a startup company trying to gain traction in the wireless industry, has made a slick e-mail only device for users that haven’t discovered Blackberrys yet. The Peek will run off of T-mobile’s network, and charge $19.99 a month for unlimited e-mail. Notice the lack of any start or end call buttons? That is because the phone doesn’t make calls. Like we said, e-mail is all the Peek device does. If your interasted, stop by Target next month to pick up the Peek for $99.95.

Feature of the week: SkyDeck

skydeck

At TmoNews we strive our best to bring our readers the best and newest features available around the web. That is why last time we featured YouMail, and today we are featuring SkyDeck. SkyDeck is a unique service, that provides something that mobile phone companies should have provided years ago. In one sentence, SkyDeck takes your cell phone activities (from MyT-mobile.com), puts them into their own easily navigable list, and analyzes them for you. Here you can see user specific stats:

skydeck2

Not only do you get slick specific stats, users will also get a SkyDeck toolbar that contains a status bar of how many minutes and texts you have used on your current billing cycle, and how many more you can use. I have been using SkyDeck for the past 3 days, and it has worked flawlessly to bring me all the stats I could dream of and more. Do you have MyFaves plan? What better way to see who should be in your Fave5 then by seeing all your contacts listed in order of how often you call them (Picture). SkyDeck also tracks texts, gives you the ability to tag them, and search them (No, you cannot read your texts online). Although they do go into your MyT-mobile account and download your bills and current usage, SkyDeck has a strict privacy policy, which is good enough for me. After talking to Jason, the CEO of SkyDeck, it sounds they are working on some great new features to add on to a service that is already on the forefront of wireless minute and text analysis. MyFaves analyzer anyone? Overall I am very impressed with everyone behind the company, and the endless (and sometimes scary) insight that they give you into your own cell phone usage. I would strongly recommend SkyDeck to anyone. Even if you are one of those lucky few that stumbled across TmoNews and don’t have T-mobile, SkyDeck supports all 4 national carriers. We completely missed the best part of the service: It is free. Head on over to SkyDeck.com to check it out.

Android Info Galore!

untitled

Patient TmoNews readers, may we present to you, the HTC Kila, errr we mean HTC Dream, or the G1, aka the first android handset ever! When we posted this rumor a couple days ago, we had our fingers crossed. Now with visual confirmations, this is all set in stone, give or take approval of the handset by the FCC. Keep in mind that the iPhone was approved 1 day before releasel. We have confirmed that the Android device will be available for current T-mobile customers online, for pre-sales, on September 17th. The Pre-sale will last for one week, with the device being delivered on October 13th, which happens to be the national public launch of the device. Get this, a “current” T-mobile customer only has to be a T-mobile customer for 24 hours to be eligible for the upgrade. This is where details get a little fuzzy; we cannot tell if the phone will sell for $149.99 to all customers, regardless of upgrade eligibility, or for $149.99 to those customers only eligible for a full upgrade (there is also the possibility it will sell for $99). Regardless, we do know that the HTC Kila will sell for $50 more then pre-sale price when it is released nationally on October 13th. You want more? Well the Kila will come with 2 data plan options: Unlimited data and 400 messages, or Unlimited data and unlimited messages. Prices will be in the $35 range, which seem more then fair to us, especially considering both plans will be free for the first week (pre-sale customers only). With multiple upcoming touchscreen phones, both with 3G AND Wifi, two 5 megapixal phones, the Kickstart, national 3G, and many more devices all being released by 2009, things have been definitely been looking up for the smallest national carrier in the U.S. (Quiet down Alltel, we said national ). Here are the specs on the HTC Kila:

· Touch Screen

· Full Qwerty keyboard

· 3G/ WiFi

· Full HTML internet capabilities

· Easy access to all Google applications (Gmail, Gtalk, search)

· Maps

· Street view

· YouTube

· Phone

· IM/Text

· Email

· Camera 3.0mp; no flash

· Video (playback only, no recording)

· Music player & 1GB memory card pre-loaded

· Applications, all available in Google marketplace (icon on the homescreen)

T-mobile Experiences Data Outages

outage

Across the country T-mobile users have been experiencing issues with text and picture messaging, as well as data services such as EDGE and 3G. According to Reuters, the outage is only through out the eastern United States, however problems have been reported across the US. With SMS delayed, data inaccessible, and some reported call problems, T-mobile users may be wondering why this is happening. Ah well that is what we’re here for. At least a piece of this is due to a power outage at a large data center in Atlanta. Services ranging from Callertunes, to T-zones, to messaging, to logging into your T-mobile account have been affected. Reuters reports that the outage was over at 7 pm on August 13th, however users are still seeing services plagued with problems. That said, most services are back up and running, maybe not at 100% though. We’d like to hear what kind of issues did our readers experienced, and where you were when your service was (or was not) affected.

Minneapolis, Dallas, Houston, and Baltimore getting 3G

usa-map

Anyone up for some more 3G news? Well lets start out with the Minneapolis, Dallas, Houston, and Baltimore markets, all launching before the end of August. Thats right folks, all four markets are locked and loaded to go live with 3G by the end of August. With Minneapolis rumored to have August 20th date, and the other markets with unknown dates, we’re going to have to count on faithful 3G testers to see when launches occur. Oh yeah, and for those not cool enough to live in any of those four markents, we have some good news for you too. By the official launch date of October 1st, T-mobile plans to have at least 23 of the 25 markets already launched. That means we will be seeing 16 markets go live during September alone, for those who are not math-inclinded. Las Vegas, Austin, and New York markets are all already live with 3G, and with 20 more planed markets in the next 1 month and 2 weeks (see the sidebar to the right for a countdown) T-mobile plans to drasticly expand their 3G coverage across the US. Upcoming 3G phones include a 5 mexapixel Samsung, 2 Sony Ericssons, the HTC Dream, and more. The remainder of 2008 is looking to be quite exciting for T-mobile users!
