We knew it was a rumor all along, but it looks like this rumor just didn’t turn our way. The Dell Mini 5, or Streak, was once thought to support T-Mobile’s 3G network, but probably not supported by T-Mobile (like that good ol’ N900). Dell has said themselves that the Streak “will not be certified [...]

We knew it was a rumor all along, but it looks like this rumor just didn’t turn our way. The Dell Mini 5, or Streak, was once thought to support T-Mobile’s 3G network, but probably not supported by T-Mobile (like that good ol’ N900). Dell has said themselves that the Streak “will not be certified for T-Mobile operation overall.” I guess that means that no AWS goodness will be thrown in, EDGE maybe (but who wants that). If you still want the Streak, the good news is that it will get FroYo this year. Seriously though, who’s looking at the Dell Streak when so many other great Android phones are out (or on their way)?

T-Mobile has made it very clear that their strategy is to promote friends and families. What better way is there to stay connected with these friends and families than by using those crazy social networks that the kids seem to love these days. Oh, right…I guess we could make some phone calls, but who wants to do that (it’s the 21st century people, I mean really). Anyways, T-Mobile is getting into the social network game by introducing a new Android App, aptly called Social Buzz. This app combines Facebook (become a fan of us) , Twitter (follow us), MySpace (wait, this is still around?) and Flickr, all into one simple app. Speaking from some first impressions, it is pretty nice and convenient, though a widget would make it great. The downside? This app is only for Android 2.x devices, so some of you will need to wait (or root). So go ahead and give it a try, then leave your thoughts in the comments!

Some said it couldn’t be done, but the good people behind the famous CyanogenMod just took that as a challenge. This time they are serving up a nice helping of FroYo to all those rooted HTC built T-Mobile Android phones. CyanogenMod 6 will run on the G1, the MyTouch 3G and, of course, the Nexus One. This Mod will give you all the rooted goodness, but does have it’s share of bugs (like no Flash 10.1 and force closes in the Android Market). All in all, this is a pretty stable build and might be the way to go. Saying that there hasn’t been very many updates regarding FroYo on the G1 and MyTouch, this may be your only answer. As always, proceed with caution and leave your thoughts in the comments!

Now that almost everything about the Charm has been revealed, let’s dive in deeper to see what really makes this thing tick. Under the hood you will find a TI OMAP3410 600 MHz processor with 512 MB RAM and 512 MB Flash ROM. User storage for apps is limited to 150 MB until the Charm is updated to Froyo, then you can take advantage of the extra 32 GB available in the MicroSD card slot. The screen is a disappointing 2.8 inches with a 320 x 240 resolution (QVGA), but it works with the form factor. With other bonuses like the BACKTRACK rear touchpad, Adobe Flash Lite 3, Kodak Perfect Touch imaging and what looks to be a decent keyoard, the Motorola Charm will certainly find a home somewhere. Head on over to the Motorola site to get the real dirt on the specs and, as always, leave your thoughts in the comments!

Well, it hasn’t been long since the Motorola Charm rumors first started to pick up speed. Since then, it seems like we have learned more and more every day. Now, the entry level Android phone has been officially announced by Motorola. It packs everything that we told you about before (you know, the 2.8 inch screen, backtrack navigation, Android 2.1 with MOTOBLUR and so on) but it also has a few other tricks up its sleeve. The Charm will also have the standard Android Google Suite, Crystal Talk Technology (the whole two microphone deal), a 3 MP camera with Kodak Perfect Touch technology and full Adobe Flash enabled web browsing (shocker!). Still no word on the official price, but that can’t be too far off. Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Libertyville, Ill. — July 7, 2010 —Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announced the upcoming availability of Motorola CHARM™, a touch screen smartphone that packs a social networking punch with Android™ 2.1, MOTOBLURTM enhancements, a compact design and a BACKTRACK™ feature that makes screen navigation even more intuitive.

Motorola CHARM is expected to be available this summer exclusively in the U.S. for customers of T-Mobile USA, Inc.

“Motorola strives to provide an increased customizable user experience, which is enabled by our latest enhancements to MOTOBLUR and featured on the new Motorola CHARM,” said Jean Pierre Le Cannellier, vice president, Americas Marketing, Motorola Mobile Devices. “Combine that with a compact design, easy handling and all the features you would expect from a smartphone, and we believe that CHARM with MOTOBLUR adds the social ability and workability consumers are looking for.”

Motorola CHARM provides consumers all the features of a smartphone with the intuitive navigation of a 2.8 inch touch screen – all in a compact, pocketable design that makes messaging a snap using the combination of a full QWERTY keyboard and touch screen. The BACKTRACK navigation pad, located on the back of the smartphone directly behind the home screen, is similar to a laptop touch panel and enables an unobstructed view of the Web, texts, e-mails and news feeds. Plus, with Android 2.1 and enhanced MOTOBLUR features, CHARM offers new customization and filtering options.

“Being social with friends and family comes naturally for T-Mobile customers, and we think mobilizing their social experiences should be effortless,” said Saj Sahay, director of product management, T-Mobile USA. “With the new Motorola CHARM and enhancements to the Android and MOTOBLUR experience, we’re bringing more social skills to our broad portfolio of Android-powered smartphones.”

Motorola CHARM will be the first device in the U.S. to feature an enhanced version of MOTOBLUR built on Android 2.1, which syncs contacts, posts, messages, photos and much more in easy to manage streams — from sources such as Facebook®, MySpace, Twitter™, Gmail™, work and personal e-mail. MOTOBLUR now allows for even greater customization, providing users more options to follow who and what really matters.

MOTOBLUR filters can be selected from a single social networking account, contacts, group or messaging account so that users can select only the information they want to stream live to the Happenings and Messages widgets. Users can move and resize pre-loaded home screen widgets to personalize up to seven home screen panels for an even more custom experience. Lastly, consumers can manage their phone’s battery consumption by selecting different power modes to conserve battery.

Contacts in MOTOBLUR are automatically synced to the phone from personal and work e-mail and social network accounts. MOTOBLUR will continue to provide convenience and peace of mind, as lost devices can be located from a secure personal information portal and even remotely erased if necessary. In addition, one user name and password brings back contacts, messages and connectivity to previously configured networks and e-mail providers.

Last, but not least, Moto Phone Portal enables you to access and manage your phone’s data from any browser through a USB or Wi-Fi connection. Edit content and view important phone information while at home or on-the-go. Leave pictures on a friend’s PC, share a video at the local Internet café or share a presentation during an important business meeting.

Additional features on Motorola CHARM include:

Adobe® Flash® enabled Web browsing experience to view most of today’s content-rich sites

Full suite of Google™ services including: Google Search™, Google Maps™, Gmail™ and access to thousands of apps on Android Market™

Pinch to zoom functionality and two-finger swipe to easily surf the Web and sort through photos

Capture sharp photos with a 3MP camera and KODAK PERFECT TOUCH technology for better, brighter pictures

One-touch social media uploads to Facebook®, MySpace, PicasaTM and PhotoBucket®

CrystalTalkTM PLUS for enhanced audio and call quality with a second microphone for increased voice quality while filtering out background noise

Corporate email pushed immediately to the device for instant inbox updates

As Independence Day looms, you may be realizing that the summer is almost over. Some may be dreading it, others won’t care, but we can all agree on one thing, back to school promotions are great. What does T-Mobile have to offer for those school going folk? Well, a nice free messaging phone for those text-savvy (see what I did there?) back to schoolers. More to the point though. From the picture, you can see the Samsung , Gravity 3 and the Gravity T. Then, way in the back, you can see the upcoming Motorola Charm. Everyone’s favorite Android powered, portrait qwerty phone is coming, there is no denying it now. Also, free for back to school? Sounds like a good deal to me. The Motorola Charm, and these Samsungs, will surely make some people happy. I’m sure we will hear more soon, and don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments!

Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg (yes, him), took some time out of his busy Apple dominated schedule to review the less interesting parts of wireless networks. That less interesting part being the actual network. In his test, he compared the new 3G iPhone 4 with the MyTouch Slide and the webConnect Rocket with Verizon’s UM175 modem. He found that T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network beat the competition in all the tests. His results are as follows:

In each spot, I did 10 tests of the devices and averaged their speeds. At the first location, the T-Mobile Slide barely edged out the iPhone, with a download speed averaging 2.84 mbps versus the iPhone’s 2.74 mbps. At the second location, however, the Slide’s edge grew, with an average download speed of 4.26 mbps versus 3.65 mbps for the Apple product.

The laptop tests were much more dramatic. At my first test location, the T-Mobile Rocket drove the ThinkPad to an average download speed of 4.88 megabits per second, versus just 1.36 megabits per second for the Verizon data modem. At the second location, the Rocket achieved an average download speed on the laptop of 6.15 mbps versus 1.58 mbps for Verizon’s modem.

The only disclaimer is that these tests were performed in areas were T-Mobile’s network is strong and HSPA+ ready. I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to the development of this network and a real HSPA+ phone. Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Maybe you aren’t digging the MyTouch Slide or the Samsung Vibrant. Well, it looks as though Motorola will be giving T-Mobile customer’s another Android pick, and it might be charming. Dubbed the Motorola Charm, which we think might be the Motorola Basil from a while back, this portrait qwerty, candybar Android phone will surely make some people happy. This is reportedly running the new and improved Motoblur, with scalable widgets and enhanced Facebook and Twitter integration, all powered by Android 2.1. This new Motoblur should hit the Cliq and Cliq XT as well, so look for that in the future. Aside from that, not much is know about this phone. Stay tuned for more information and, as always, leave your thoughts in the comments!
