Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus offer upgraded cameras, new A10 Fusion processor

appleiphone7and7plus

As expected, Apple today took the wraps off of the iPhone 7, its latest smartphone.

While the iPhone 7 looks similar to the iPhone 6 before it, Apple is touting several new features of the iPhone 7. That includes a new 12-megapixel camera on the iPhone 7 that offers optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 aperture that’ll let more light onto the sensor.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 Plus packs dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, one 56mm telephoto lens and one wide-angle lens. With these two lenses, you can get 2x optical zoom, and the iPhone 7 Plus also offers a Depth Effect feature to add bokeh to your images.

The front-facing camera on both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is of the 7-megapixel variety.

Another major change to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Yes, the rumors were true. Apple will include Lightning-equipped EarPods headphones with every iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but if you’ve already got 3.5mm headphones that you like, you can use the Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter that Apple will also include with each new iPhone.

Keeping up with the audio focus, Apple is throwing in stereo speakers with each iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. One speaker will be located on the bottom of the phone, while the other will be up at the earpiece above the display.

Below the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus display is a new pressure-sensitive Home button. This non-moving Home button is customizable for different things like Quick Actions, notifications, messages, and more.

Apple also highlighted the upgraded displays of both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While they’re the same size and resolution as the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus — 4.7-inch 1334×750 and 5.5-inch 1920×1080, respectively — both displays now offer a wide color gamut and are 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus screen.

Rounding out the new features of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are new quad-core Apple A10 Fusion chips with two high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, improved graphics performance, better battery life (on average two hours better from 6s to 7 and one hour better from 6s Plus to 7 Plus), and LTE Advanced that offers speeds up to 450Mbps.

For all the nitty gritty spec details, you can hit up Apple’s iPhone 7 spec page here.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available for pre-order starting Sept. 9 and will launch on Sept. 16. T-Mobile will carry both models, and there’s already a pre-registration page on T-Mo’s site.

Here’s what the pricing for the new iPhones looks like:

  • iPhone 7: 32GB for $649, 128GB for $749, 256GB for $849
  • iPhone 7 Plus: 32GB for $769, 128GB for $869, 256GB for $969

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in high-gloss Jet Black, matte Black, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold color options. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that if you want a Jet Black phone, you’ll need to spring for a 128GB or 256GB iPhone.

appleairpods

Apple today also announced AirPods, its new wireless earbuds that have a microphone, double-tap for Siri, and the Apple W1 chip, which uses accelerometers to know when the AirPods are in your ears and can play and pause music when you remove or insert the earbuds. The AirPods offer up to five hours of listening on a single charge and come with a charging case that can recharge them while you’re on the go.

AirPods will cost $159 and launch in late October.

what can i do with the iphone 6s plus i upgraded last year? Can I swap or upgrade for the IPhone 7?What happens to all the payments I have made for the 6s plus in last 14 months or so whenever it was released? The pricing will be?

    Thanks

    • TBN27

If you have Jump then use that, if not then trade it in and use what value you get from the 6S to help pay for the next phone.

      • Dean Smith

i think it was the jump, what will that do? save me some if i exchange it?

        • TBN27

You go to the store or call T-mobile and what will happen is jump will pay off the current phone if you still owe on it and start a new EIP. If it is jump on demand then it’s a little different because it’s like you leased the phone. So consult with a T-Mo rep

  • Jack Devainy

I can’t wait for T-Mobile to once again drop the ball on the launch. Will it be the web site that goes down again, or ground shipping instead of overnight?

    • Hoggles

They haven’t dropped the ball yet. Aside from preorders for the N7 not going out early (well, only a day early)…Tmo is and has been the consistent leader in getting preorders out before any other carrier

Any website glitch, or a few people receiving ground instead of the normal free overnight, is very minimal.

    • FryChickenIsha

Is it me, or this happens whenever a new iPhone comes out.

      • JG

First time it happened I was convinced it was because TMobile gets the last of the iPhone orders after all the other carriers.
2nd time it happened, I’m still too bothered by the lack of customer service that I can’t figure out who was to blame, Apple or TMo. Probably a little bit of both. Apple launches are getting tiresome to me.

        • FryChickenIsha

If that’s the case, then I’m going to pre-order through Apple’s Website.

        • JG

Honestly, that is probably the best source to get one from in my opinion. I remember talking to Apple reps and seeing T-Mobile iPhones in stock on Apple’s website as I was waiting for 4 of mine that were held up in the T-Mobile ordering process. I ended up contacting John Legere’s email address and got an ‘executive’ account rep to handle my orders. They still came pretty late. If I were to do it again I’d go through Apple.

    • JG

I was there Jack. Twice. First time was at the physical store for iPhone 6. After waiting all night, we were greeted at the door by the manager telling us they received zero phones, but they would put our orders in first and have them overnighted. So we all waked in obeyed. The next two months was filled with follow up calls with the call center as they told us they could see an order but since it was placed at the store, couldn’t do anything else with it.
2nd time was with iPhone 6s. It was painful. Website went down at midnight. I called in at 12:04a. Was assured I was ‘first’ in line, but that the computers were down at the call center too so my order would be hand placed. Next day, called back in to find out that my order (4 iPhones) were lost and not entered. In fact, those who ordered on the web later that morning became first in line because the call center hadn’t placed any of the hand written orders by that time. Needless to say, if you plan on getting a phone, plan on having a lot of patience.

  • Drewski troll

Take my money now!! hopefully Tmobile has some incentive for preordering

    • FryChickenIsha

      I hope so too!

    • Walt

      Drewski doesnt like iphones

    • Andrew Singleton

There’s never incentives for preordering an iphone :(

      • lomsha

The privilege of getting a mighty holy artifact like the iPhone is the incentive lol.

  • Hoggles

I’m sure these will both be available through JOD. And hopefully it’s available for preorder this Friday.

  • FryChickenIsha

I’m getting the iPhone 7 Plus 256GB. The black matte looking is my favorite. The AirPods are $159? WTF.

    • AnthonyReyes

Yeah once he announced the price I was well I’m never going to have those. Gonna have to wait till some crazy sale because that is too much.

    • Andrew Singleton

they better be bomb quality for that price. samsung’s new audio products are killing it and the same product but way cooler looking is 199

    • Zacamandapio

      If you’re going to spend $1,000.00, what’s another 150.
      :D

    • ITALIANNYC

Buy some real cans if you are going to spend 160 on apple garbage. I am speaking directly to people who think earbuds sound good. I highly highly doubt these will sound any better. Get some VMODA wireless

  • Tim

Same screen size/resolution? No thanks. Waiting for next years iphone :)

    • Acdc1a

Maybe time to broaden your horizons? I was a Samsung flagship fan until I got the black Friday Nexus 6 special. Now I know what I can get with my money. Broke a lot of bad habits like EIP :)

  • Hoggles

Legere just tweeted 12:01pst this Friday morning for preorders.

  • Acdc1a

Finally Apple puts 32GB of storage into a $650 device! It’s about time!

  • steveb944

AirPods look interesting. I assume/hope they work with everything.

    • Tinger12

Apple wireless tech. Unless others license it I don’t see it beyond Apple for the time being.

      • steveb944

It’s too bad as I enjoy my Beats Wireless, but I don’t think they would adopt this into that line.

        • Tinger12

They actually announced today new Beats branded gear with this tech.

        • steveb944

I see. Apparently CNET says all of them including the AirPods are compatible with anything Bluetooth, not just iPhone. We’ll have to wait and see.

  • Dean Smith

have the 6s plus, love it for web, better camera but so uncomfortable to carry with you when you go out. just heavy big and gets worse with cases. more likely will go for the 7 and not the plus, will I be unhappy?

also, if i got my 6s plus thru Jump or jOD can’t remember which, do i save by upgrading. exchanging it for the 7?
    Thanks

    • Andrew Singleton

      your question doesnt make sense

    • JG

I have a friend who started with the 6s+, felt it was a little too big, went to 6s, and is happy with it. I have 6s+ and I’ve never looked back. Personally, I don’t feel like it’s too big to carry around. So… with the logic of personal preference you’ll probably like the smaller size if you think the plus size is too big.

As far as the Jump or JOD, if you bought on the Amp’d promo like I did you’re still getting money off your bill for the next 6 months. It is to our benefit if we stay with the same phone until pay off. However, TMo may give a promo with those of us in mind and make the upgrade path look more enticing.

    • Acdc1a

Get a low cost Android with a 5.5″ screen. It sounds like you like the screen size, hate the phone size. Apple is pretty much alone with the huge bezels. If you saw what my $125 Moto G4 can do you’d hate Apple for life (maybe not but you’d have nothing but respect for it I promise).

    • FryChickenIsha

The only differences between the 7 and the 7 plus is the camera and screen size. I think the 7 is going to feel smaller at first but you’ll get used to it.

  • Anonymouse

    I wonder if it’ll support 3xCA, 4x4MIMO and 256QAM?

    • Came specifically here to ask the same question. Hopefully we can get confirmation.

      • master94

No to 4x4MIMO and 256QAM, yes to 3xCA. For all three, get a galaxy s7 or edge

    • David Freeman

      Yes, no, no.

  • Adam

Will AirPods work on people who are big headed? My current Bluetooth headphones only work when my phone is on my right side, the one with the receiver. If I move the phone to my left side, my head blocks the signal, causing the sound to stop. From the photos, it looks like each pod has its own receiver, which makes me worries that no matter which side you put your phone on, the other side will get it’s signal blocked.

    • Michael Black

Just how big IS your head?

      • Zacamandapio

        LOL.
If it’s under 30 feet he should be fine.

      • lomsha

        Lol

  • Spanky

The lack of a headphone jack is a 100% deal breaker for me. I sure hope that this is not the direction that phone manufacturers will take, similar to what happened with non-removable batteries.

    • SurvivingSunnyvale

Go look up the Moto Z.

      • Zacamandapio

I agree. At least you can wireless charge the moto z while using the port.

  • pda96

I’m no fan of Apple. But kudos to them for putting stereo speakers on their phones!! Samsung…are u listening??

    • thepanttherlady

I wish more phone manufacturer’s would do this!

      • pda96

You know, if Apple carries this feature thru all their future phones, then I’ll bet more and more Android OEMs will follow suit. I don’t use earbuds, so I don’t care about the lack of a headphone jack. Thanks, Apple!

        • thepanttherlady

I’m not an Apple fan myself but if they are able to start this trend I’d be one happy phone buyer! :)

        • Kaulana1989

You have an axon 7 you should be very happy front facing Dolby surround sound speakers

        • thepanttherlady

I am. I don’t usually keep a phone for very long so it would be nice to have more options to choose from moving forward.

    • master94

buy oneplus or htc if thats important to you.

      • pda96

I’m using an M9 right now. But I’d like something a little bigger

  • Raiden8816

Anyone have an idea how much monthly one would be looking at for 128GB Jet Black? A price of $869 which is more than the Note 7 I’d imagine commands a $40-$45/mo price?

    • Tinger12

Tmobile will most likely make you pay a down payment so the lease amount is around $30/month like they have been doing the past 6 months or so.

  • ITALIANNYC

Question. I have jump 1. I know you get two trades a year I believe. I used one back in Jan. Now if I use one now, will I have to wait till Jan to get another?

If so, screw it ill just use it. I currently have the 6s. Came from the 6 edge. Want to stay away from Samsung for a little while longer.

    • thepanttherlady

The original Jump! is 2 trades within a 12 month period so, yes, you’d have to wait until January 2017 for your next one if you use one now.

ETA: You might as well use it because they don’t “reset”.

      • ITALIANNYC

Seems like a good thing then. By December I will get the next galaxy, then back to iPhone 8 when they finally make some big changes. The screen to be is the biggest issue. I miss me some amoled

        • thepanttherlady

If you use your Jump! now, you won’t have another one available until January 2017. If you want the Galaxy you’ll either need to wait until January to get it or use the Jump! you have available now in December. Just keep in mind that if you Jump! in December, that resets the clock for your Jumps! in 2017. Reset meaning you’d only have one more Jump! to use until December 2017.

  • Brian Richards

Is there new lower pricing on the 6s? Buying a phone that can’t use $10 Target ear buds is a problem if you have teens. They go through them very quickly simply because they use them so much.

    • HienP

Yes, price should drop by $100.

  • Brandon Giorlando

Can you pre order using JUMP?

    • HienP

      Yes.

  • Fuuuuuuuuu

So, let me get this straight.

No 3.5mm port = lightning-to-3.5mm adapter included with every phone.

Lightning port is used to charge phone.

What if you want to listen to music while your phone is charging, but you don’t have wireless headphones/earbuds?

What the hell is Apple doing?

    • livewire1981

I assume the answer is to by the Air Pods or get Bluetooth headphones.

      • flyincloud

I guess you didn’t read his question properly

    • Dean Smith

that’s the trick, that will be upgrade on iphone 7s next year. dual edge speaker for iphone 8 in 2018.

    • Adam

The lighting-to-hdmi adapter, has both lightning in and out to charge your phone while watching XVideos on the big screen. Hopefully, Apple is consistent with the lightning-to-3.5mm.

      • Fuuuuuuuuu

I would hope it has charging pass-through. That would be the most ideal outcome in this.

  • HeatFan786

Anyone know if it will work with the new LTE speed tech?

    • Lit

I would like to know this as well.

    • Joe

No. It won’t, unfortunately. It will support 3 way carrier aggregation, but all other features like 256QAM on the downlink, 4×4 MIMO, and 64QAM on the uplink will not be supported. The highest speeds you can possibly get, and this is if you’re in a spectrum rich metropolitan area, is 300Mbps down and 50Mbps up. But you’ll never actually see those kinds of speeds.

Apple used Intel’s 7360 LTE modem instead of QualComm’s MDM9645 LTE modem due to battery consumption concerns. Higher modulation and more special streams over the airwaves requires more power and Apple wanted to focus more on conserving battery life than adding hardware that could deplete it faster.

      • HeatFan786

So the S7 is the better bet based off this new tech?

        • Joe

In terms of LTE speeds, yes.

      • Tmo_fan

Thanks for confirming, I was wondering this as well. Does this phone support the new T-Mobile LTE advanced upgrades as I was hoping to have better call quality, reception, coverage from the new iPhone 7 however I don’t believe it does. This years new iPhones makes no difference. I think I would just stick with my 6S and wait until 7S or whatever it’s going to be called next year.

        • Joe

In regards to whether or not the new iPhones will support the new upgrades on T-Mobile’s network or not, the answer is mostly no. I outlined why that is in my prior post. You won’t see an increase in signal. The same signal you get now on the 6s/6s Plus is the same signal you’ll get with the 7/7 Plus. The only difference in LTE performance you may notice is a slight boost on the download speed.

        • matt

apple says this phone is capable of 450 mbit. its likely the GSM model is an intel modem and the GSM + CDMA model is a Qualcom modem

        • Joe

Considering that QualComm doesn’t have a standalone LTE modem for OEMs to add to their devices (MDM9xxx variants) capable of those specific speeds, I don’t know if that’s accurate. The 6s/6s Plus was loaded with the QualComm MDM9635 LTE modem, capable of 300Mbps down (via 2 way carrier aggregation) and 50Mbps up. The next step up is the MDM9645, capable of 600Mbps down (via 3 way carrier aggregation, 256QAM, and 4×4 MIMO) and 150Mbps up (via 2 carrier aggregation and 64QAM). There’s no in-between model among those two modems that achieves Apple’s advertised max of 450Mbps. Either Apple is keeping details on Verizon’s model hush hush, or they’re using a different manufacturer’s LTE modem, besides QualComm and Intel. Another possibility is that they are actually using QualComm’s MDM9645 LTE modem, but a modified version that rids features from it, such as downlink 256QAM, downlink 4×4 MIMO, and uplink 64QAM. Only time will tell as people get their hands on the devices and rip them open.

      • J A Smith

        Joe,

Do you know whether Tmo’s LG V10 will benefit from their newly announced LTE speed tech?

Is there a list of phones likely to benefit, or definitely will not benefit from the speed tech?

        • Joe

The LG V10 is powered by QualComm’s all in one processor, the Snapdragon 808. It comes loaded with a category 9 LTE modem, which means it’s capabilities are similarly limited as the iPhone 7/7 Plus’ are. The most you can theoretically get on the download is 300Mbps and 50Mbps on the upload.

There’s no list that I’m aware of, but the latest Samsung Galaxy devices are officially cleared by T-Mobile to support the new network upgrades. I’m not aware of any other devices.

        • J A Smith

Thank you for your informative reply, sir.

  • J.T

Just got some info. TM customers trade in 6 or 6S to iPhone 7 for free/ 7+ $120

    • Denaaaa

Where did this info come from if you don’t mind me asking? Did you call up TM and ask? This sounds different from how they did the trade ins from last time I did one (traded my iPhone 5 for the iPhone 6)

      • J.T

TM CEO going to release info soon

        • Denaaaa

          Okay, thanks

  • dontsh00tmesanta

    Woot

    Finally caught up

  • Tim

With the relocation of the antennas, i wonder if signal will improve

    • FILA

You are once again holding it wrong

    • FryChickenIsha

Probably not, we’ll just have to wait and see. For some reason, iPhones have weak signal when compared to other phones.

  • Tuna

I can’t wait for the 7S so we can use our wired headphones and charge at the same time. Must have feature there probably add in later, (2 lightning connections)…

By the way this is a sarcastic statement~… eom

  • macandcheese

I’m getting tired of the round corners, it’s still slippery for the Plus version.
Hope they do actual re-design instead of just internal upgrades. This design is 3 years old, since the 6 came out.
