Samsung Galaxy Note 7 branding and spec details leak out

galaxynote5

The past five Samsung Galaxy Note flagships have appeared on T-Mobile, and so it’s not crazy to assume that the next model will, too. And thanks to some new leaks, we may have some details on what that new Note will have to offer when it hits T-Mo.

Several leaks detailing the Galaxy Note 7 have been posted by Evan Blass. First up is the name itself, which leaked branding indicates will be “Galaxy Note 7” and “Galaxy Note 6,” even though this will be the sixth Galaxy Note flagship. It’s possible that Samsung is skipping 6 to go to 7 so that the numbering of its Galaxy Note and Galaxy S flagships are the same, making it clear to consumers looking at the two phones in the store that they’re both Samsung’s latest hardware.

When it comes to the Galaxy Note 7’s feature set, Blass tells us to expect features like a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 Super AMOLED display, 12-megapixel Dual Pixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera (like those found in the GS7), and IP68 water and dust resistance. There will reportedly be 64GB of storage internally, but unlike the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy Note 7 is expected to offer a microSD slot so that users can add even more storage if they’d like.

One other notable feature that’s rumored to be included with the Galaxy Note 7 is an iris scanner. Samsung has offered fingerprint readers in several of its past Galaxy flagships, giving users added security, but an iris scanner could take the Note 7’s security up another notch. Exactly how well that iris scanner works is something that we’ll determine when the Note 7 launches, but it could make for an interesting addition since we don’t see many iris scanners on smartphones.

As for when the new Note might launch, rumors have suggested a mid-August launch. If today’s leaks hold true, it sounds like the Galaxy Note 7 will adopt several of the Galaxy S7’s features, like its 12-megapixel camera and microSD slot. Considering that the Galaxy Note 5 lacked a microSD card slot after its predecessors all had one, the Note 7 could be a welcome upgrade for fans of the Note series.

Return of the microSD card slot? Hmm, depending on the reviews I may pick this one up. Of course, I’m going to wait a few months for the price to drop. Nobody has any business paying $880 for a phone. I wonder if the Note 7 Edge will be IP68 as well…

    • Mr. Mister

This is as powerful as a pc and it’s not worth the price?

  • B Brad

I’m quite fond of my note 4, once I installed cyanogen to get rid of the home key lag and aggressive killing of background apps. I’ll definitely upgrade… if there’s a replaceable battery. After 13 months or so my battery would go from 50% to zero, $25 later I’m good. No way am I going to buy a >$600 flagship phone if I have to replace it when a $25 battery dies.

    • Jsun

That’s exactly my point with the battery. Even if I can get a battery pack I would rather switch a battery than have the phone attached to an external battery pack. Plus with new batteries I know that it won’t randomly shut off below 50%. Plus don’t tell me I have bad charging habits but I have had times when charging was disrupted.

      • T Redd

my note 4 battery went to crap 6 months after purchase.

    • T Redd

      does your gps work?

      • B Brad

It was mostly good, occasional issues. I use it heavily (daily). After a year or so it got terrible. I googled around and found a suggestion to remove all the rear screws (14 or so) and ever so gently twist it, then reassemble. It works great. I went from 2 days of only call based location (very crude) go consistently quick/accurate GPU locks.

I was close to replacing it, glad I tried the fix.

        • T Redd

one i insalled cyanogenmod on my note 4 i couldn’t get the gps to work. i went back to n5express.

    • Phone Guy

Have Samesung replace the battery. Easy. You may pay $100 but you will be back in the game.

  • Benben

Nexus 6 150$ and no need for a mortgage there’s nothing new with cellphones anymore they all the same

    • steveb944

Dang my N6 is only worth $150? That’s terrible for such a great device.

      • Benben

It was on sale on Amazon

  • George Salcedo

Tell me the lag will finally disappear, was playing with my friends Note 5 and that thing lagged horribly.

    • B Brad

Cyanogen cures it. I’m pretty sure they aggressively kill off background apps so they get slightly better benchmark numbers. With cyanogen even the note 4 feels quite snappy. With the stock samsung it felt slower than my nexus 5 (despite a better spec), now it feels significantly better.

      • George Salcedo

It should run good without a custom rom installed.

        • Phone Guy

          Should, but…..

    • My Nexus 6P was the same way, that’s why I’m mostly iPhone now after years of Android. There are absolutely issues with iOS, but for me, lag isn’t one of them.

    • Phone Guy

My Note 5 lags horribly when I use another launcher. When I use the stock launcher, zero lag, but who wants to use the stock launcher.

      • John Wentworth

I use the stock launcher and have no problems, it’s really not that bad once you add a theme to change the look and other than the apps button being in the wrong place (which you get used to), I find it works fine, no lag

    • Hector Arteaga

I have an iPhone 6s Plus and a Note 5. What lag? I don’t notice any on my Note 5.

  • steadymobb

    Meh

    • Matt

I am with you there. I don’t believe in paying more than 150.00 for a phone.

      • Jsun

You should have realized that it would cost more than 150 before clicking on an article about a note. However, I feel meh about the phone.

        • Phone Guy

The is the year the phone will finally get good. The S7 camera is amazing, so it will have an excellent camera (leave my slr at home for trips now), waterproof, and a memory card slot. It finally will have everything, and should last for several years.

        • Matt

Oh I did. I was just reading for the hell of it. Reading the article actually prompted me to leave the comment.

      • It’s funny, because a $150 phone can do almost everything a $800 phone can, just like a $15K car can get you to work in the same time as an $80K car can. The devil is in the details. Everyone’s needs and budgets vary.

        • Phone Guy

And cheap no name medicine may cure your headache, but I still like Tylenol. Devil is in the details. Wonder if Matt pays full price for his phone service or gets that discounted too.

        • Hector Arteaga

I disagree. The level of precision of the Note pen allows me to use it for schematics and prints in my field. Also writing on pictures has become extremely useful for troubleshooting of components on aircraft simulators. I tried the LG G Stylo to see if I could replace it with that, but it just can’t do the exact same things.

        • You’re an edge case; not a common scenario.

        • Devil

What are you talking about? I do not even exist and you talking ’bout me?!

        • Matt

I doubt that the vast majority of people out there need a Galaxy S7 Edge. I would call it more of a “want” than a “need.” It is amazing what you can do with a low to mid-range phone. I am looking forward to the LG Stylo 2 Plus which is reputed to have 3GB of RAM and an octa-core processor. This should be a nice boost for running Marshmallow.

      • steadymobb

To each his own. I can’t do mid range but these specs don’t blow my mind in comparison to the 7edge

  • Claire Pieterek

Anybody know if this will do channel aggregation on T-Mobile? I’ll put my S7 Edge w/o Gear VR up on Swappa if it does.

    • John Wentworth

I’m sure it will, my note 5 supports carrier aggregation on T-mobile
But it only supports 2 channels at once (which is really all you need)
But, I think the new 820 Soc support three channels at once.

  • Jose Lugo

The price better be right about this one, the edge piece always gets a higher price. I’m surprised that there might not be a flat version of the device. If the camera is the same as the S7 then I might not jump on this too quick.

    • Phone Guy

Do you not like the S7 camera? The photos I have seen from friends are “sick” compared to the crap that comes from my Note 5.

    • Omar Ben Sassi

in other words you are saying if note 6/7 comes with the best camera on the market you will not buy it?? lmao

  • Philip

Basically is just the same as the S7, except its bigger+s-pen and the iris scanner. The Note 5 is a big upgrade from Note 4. I think I will just stay with my Note 5.

    • Do Do

I don’t agree, that’s why I stayed with the note 4 and probably still won’t upgrade unless they make drastic improvements with battery life with the note 6/7

      • Phone Guy

Why wait. I have a super slim battery case that adds 60% longer time and I can enjoy a long life or go with a regular slim case. No need to wait. Plus you will never have a removable battery every again on it, so might as well get a battery case for those days you will be away from the wall.

    • Omar Ben Sassi

      the same as s7…no : …bigger battery…iris…6gb ram…better proc…usb C…what same???
      if we compare with note 5 : bigger battery…fast usb C…micro SD…ip68…better ram…better processeur…better camera…and combined spen with edge sexy screen…it’s bigger update than from note 2 to 3 or 3 to 4 or 4 to 5

  • Jake Fitzpatrick

Looks awesome. But my Note5 still works great (aside from it being 87% full)

  • Randy Morris

I can only hope that it doesn’t only come in the Edge variant as rumored.

    • Chris

Yeah I won’t even consider this if edge only. The S7E is annoying.

  • shawn

is tmobile getting any sony phones?

    • Guest

No. Buy unlocked Sony’s at Best Buy or Amazon. The X Series are available now.

  • TheRealKingSen

Anyone not buying this if it is unrootable? Would buy this instantly if it is root able. Otherwise I will cop the next nexus device

  • Glenn Yudenfriend

    what about Android N?

  • I pretty much dislike Samsung. I don’t like their culture; their policies aren’t consumer friendly from their unwanted Samsung bloat ware to unlocking to repair. If it is Android, it’s Nexus for me.

    • no2apple

      Bcoz nexus is cheap??

      • Cheap in what way?

      • iCrap

6p price is affordable, and priced well. it is by no means cheap though.

    • Philip

Yes. Samsung abandon their things after 1 year. But they are the leader in panels and I like OLED.

  • mrpickem

bring it on! I’m ready yesterday

  • Dean Zeng

Who can tell me which Soc will Note6/7 use?

    • John Wentworth

It should be the 820 in the US, probably exynos in europe just like the S7

      • Dean Zeng

Emm, the US variant may use SD821(MSM8996 Pro), do you agree? Samsung Note series always feature more powerful hardware spec than S.

        • John Wentworth

It’s possible but it doesn’t always have a faster CPU, just more ram.
Rumors have pointed to 6 GB of ram
Last years Note 5 had the exact same SoC as the S6

  • mreveryphone

Specs look good, still a day one purchase for me… Looks like I’ll need to invest in usb type c cables if that’s what they’re going with…

  • Scott Hare

Anyone actually consider how much this phone would cost and then think last year’s model is good enough because it is more affordable.

    • John Wentworth

Obviously we haven’t seen the Note 7 yet, we only have rumors, so a true comparison cannot be made yet.
But I can tell you as someone who has a 64gb Note 5, Nothing so far in the leaks has made me feel like I need to upgrade, my Note 5 runs great, gets good battery life and performs like a champ. I’m likely skipping the Note 7 and keeping my Note 5 for an additional year.

But with Mint Note 5’s available on swappa starting at $410, you may well be better served buying last years model but if your not in a dire need for an upgrade I’d wait until the release is at least announced so you can make an informed decision, plus the prices on the Note 5 are only going to get lower and lower so you lose nothing by waiting.

WARNING. This phone will be sold on T-Mobile with a lock bootloader!
    Your welcome

    • MadJoe

One does not typically own a “welcome”.

      • druff

        My welcome

  • mavricxx

Waiting on a phone with 1080p at 120fps, 4k at 60fps. Zoom that doesn’t blur or look crappy when you do zoom in when recording video and a removable battery

    • There aren’t even many devices that play 4K at 60fps, let alone 4K at 30fps for most people. That’d be a waste. Also, because you’re recording and cropping/stretching the image when you digitally zoom, you’ll never have a true lossless quality zooming experience unless you use optical zoom.

iPhone records slow mo at 1080p at 120fps. Few people have devices that work past 60fps, and most TVs only simulate the 120, or 240Hz rates.

  • iCrap

the s7 edge fingerprint scanner leaves much to be desired. my 6p fingerprint scanner never fails (unless i don’t dry my hands properly after washing, but that’s no fault of the device). i get a ton of errors trying to unlock the s7 edge

    • Stigasawuswrecks

My S7 fingerprint reader works fast and flawlessly.

  • that_guy

    12MP camera? [Thumbs down] #StopFollowingApple

    • Stigasawuswrecks

Because Apple was the first and only company to use a 12 mp sensor. SMH.

      • that_guy

When you go from 16mp to 12mp after Apple. You are following them. #StopFollowingApple.

        • Stigasawuswrecks

Or you could just have found a better sensor. And Apple isn’t the only company with a 12 mp sensor. #stopbeingadumbass.

        • that_guy

The writing has been on the wall. Samsung has been following apple for years. That might be too hard for you to see or understand so it’s ok. Or maybe that hurts your feelings. #StopFollowingApple

        • Stigasawuswrecks

And Samsung will just make more money off of Apple by making their processors and RAM. Sorry you’re a poor apple fanbaby.

        • that_guy

Actually I’m not an Apple fanboy. I prefer Android that’s why I hate that Samsung is following apple. I guess you’re just too quick to pull the trigger. Shoot first ask questions later much?

        • Stigasawuswrecks

Got it. So you’re just an idiot then.

        • that_guy

Actually you’re the idiot here but you’re too stupid to see it so…

  • justin l

Ummm, what happened to the Note 6? Is common core math happening here?

    • almost_happy

I see you looked at the pictures only instead of reading the text of the article.

      • justin l

Oh I read it. Just thought it was dumb. Gonna cause mass confusion in the future. People are dumb animals ya know
