Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL with Windows 10 now available

alcatelonetouchfiercexl

T-Mobile’s Windows phone lineup is officially a bit larger today, because the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL with Windows 10 is now available.

The new Windows 10 version of the Fierce XL is listed with a price of $0 down 23 monthly payments of $5.84 apiece, and 1 payment of $5.67, which works out to equal its $139.99 full retail price. T-Mo has said that the Fierce XL will be available in stores in addition to being sold online, so you should be able to swing by your friendly neighborhood T-Mo shop to check one out in person if you’d like.

fiercexlw10pair

As for its specs, you’re looking at a Windows 10 phone with a 5.5-inch 1280×720 display, 8-megapixel rear camera with flash, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB of built-in storage, and a microSD slot for adding more storage. The Fierce XL also touts a quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 2500mAh battery.

The Fierce XL is T-Mobile’s first Windows 10 smartphone, and it’s nice to see another Windows handset hitting T-Mo’s shelves. It may not be a super high-end device, but it does bring more variety to T-Mobile’s lineup of phones. I’m also liking its bright blue backside, which is reminiscent of the cyan Windows phones that Nokia used to offer.

So now that the Fierce XL is finally available, are any of you going to pick one up?

Of course. Thanks for the tweet Alex. I’ll let you all know how it is “Hands On” in a few days.

  • beachtrax

I hope they have these in store to avoid the shipping charge. I’m sure going to find out today.

    • ashley

We do at our store! So I have to imagine that would be the same way at most corporate stores nationwide! It is turning out to be a popular device so it might be worth calling your local store to make sure they have one for you!

      • beachtrax

Thanks Ashley :) What I ended up doing was ordering online anyways. I got free overnight shipping plus it saved me a trip. Order just got confirmed waiting for tracking # :)

      • timmyjoe42

Not to sound cynical, but the 2 words “Alcatel” and “Windows” make it hard for me to believe this is popular.

My wife was looking for a new Windows phone because the 635 was a piece of junk and the 640 was taken off the shelves after 2 weeks (?). T-Mobile hasn’t had a Windows phone in months. I got her a Moto G instead and she is very happy with it.

I’ve always liked the Windows OS, but the app store is terrible, not just in quality apps, but the navigation of it and searching is mindbogglingly bad. You have to know the exact name of the app you are searching for or the results aren’t smart enough to show similar apps or the likely one you are looking for.

        • tmoashley

There is definitely a specific market for the windows phones. I wish that we would carry more windows devices and specifically offer some higher end models.

The biggest draw I’ve been seeing to the phone is that it is less than $150 and has a 5.7″ screen. Mostly drawing attention from current windows users using old models like the 710 or smaller models like the 521.

  • Steve Griffin

I’m calling Tmo on my lunch break and ordering it. They never charge me shipping charges. I guess you have to have longevity.

    • beachtrax

I ended up with free Shipping: 02/11/2016 via UPS Expedited Next Day Air – Free $0.00 .

      • Steve Griffin

Wow you got overnight for free? Way to go! I was running out of time on my lunch break, she said ground, I said ok. So I’ll have mine in a week or less.

        • beachtrax

Might have because I was using a JUMP upgrade and I was doing the entire process on my laptop. I was just about to select ground when I saw the fast free shipping ” box”. I selected it and watched to see if it was shenanigans but they did not change my debit.

  • David Timothy

Hmm… Not sure if the upgrade in RAM over my Lumia 640 would be worth the money. Is there anything special about it aside from the RAM (2GB)?

    • eanfoso

      Windows 10

      • David Timothy

Running Windows 10 TP right now on my Lumia. In fact, fiddling with the tech preview is the chief reason why I bought the 640 I’m the first place. I noticed when in the MS store that the Lumia 950 that launched with Win 10 is running an older build than the latest TP so I wonder which build this phone comes with…

        • tmoashley

          Version 1511
          OS build 10.0.10510.23300

        • David Timothy

Thanks for the reply. I believe that is the same build (10510) as I saw in the 950. That must (just a guess) be their “stable” baseline for W10 phones for now. The technical preview for phones is on build number 10586.71, not that there probably is much difference between 10510 and 10586.

    • ashley

16gb internal memory. (Though sd can only be expanded to 32gb vs 128gb in the 640)

      • kgraham182

I never had a device that didn’t support more than 32GB, and I suspect this will to. I think 32GB is a generic limit.

        • jamssx1

640 supports 128G. 950 supports 200GB (odd number but that is what is on the spec sheet)

        • beachtrax

I have a 64GB Samsung class 10 micro SD installed in the Fierce XL with no problems. Another poster on a Windows site I visit has been using a 128GB micro SD.

      • David Timothy

Thanks, I missed that. I wonder if it is truly limited to 32 GB or if it is a typo. I’ve got a 64 GB card in my Lumia right now…

        • eanfoso

I believe the lumia can take FAT formats of memory cards.

        • tmoashley

All three of the phones launched today state that they only support up to 32gb. Fierce XL, ZTE Avid Plus and LG K7.

    • todd

      Does the 640 have LTE?

      • eanfoso

Of course it does, even b12

        • David Timothy

Yup. Its LTE performance is pretty good.

        • NewDCFan

          plus its 50 bucks

  • eanfoso

Guys please post if it has continuum

    • It does not.

      • eanfoso

Fuuuuuuck I guess then that lumia 950 is my cheapest bet for continuum then :/

        • Ordeith

Yeah. I don’t like that situation either. Japan gets continuum capable options for ~ $400, but here in the US the 950 is the lowest cost of entry. It stinks.

        • One of the Asian Windows 10 phones is supposed to be going worldwide soon, according to WMPowerUser.

      • NewDCFan

whats the difference between project my screen app and continuum?

  • I’m friend of friend

I’m strictly android user (Note 5) but I might just pick one up just to try out a new OS.

    • David Timothy

That’s exactly why I picked up the Lumia 640, to try out something different. It’s been fun and if it had a couple more apps it would be my daily driver. If you’re a big hangouts/G+ user then fully migrating from Android is going to be hard but there is little else I haven’t been able to find an app for. Sadly the lack of hangouts means I keep an android tablet on my desk to get those messages.

      • Ordeith

and Google’s proprietary shackles strike again.

        • David Timothy

Truth. If Hangouts/G+ weren’t practically required to participate in Ingress communities I never would have adopted them. One day Ingress will be gone and I’ll be glad to be rid of Hangouts especially. Such a load of crashes and problems.

    • Mike

If you’re coming from a Note 5 why would u try it switching it’s obviously the Note 5 is the better phone. Try waiting til windows 10 gets a middle to high end phone.

  • On the way to get this today!

  • ashley

The final payment is $5.67 which makes it come out to exactly $139.99.

    • beachtrax

If i think about how much I spend on coffee the monthly cost for this phone will be a piece of cake donut ;)

  • David Timothy

Has anyone seen the display on it, to compare it specifically to the display on the Lumia 640? The 640 had a nice display for its price range…clearblack with IPS made it quite usable even at 720P.

    • tmoashley

If you look really closely you can tell that the pixels are there but you have to look for it. It does have less ppi than the 640 but that is going to happen with the significant size increase. The only thing screen related that I’m not super excited about is actually the feel of the screen. It almost feels slightly tacky? A screen protector obviously would take care of that but it’s strange. Hard to explain really.

    • todd

It’s kind of humongous quite a phablet.

  • x

I’m not sure about the 1.1Mhz processor with a 720p display. It could be the weakest link of this setup. What are your thoights?

    • David Timothy

The snapdragon 400 performed very well in the Lumia 640. The weakest link was easily being stuck with 1GB of RAM on the 640.

    • Mike

The phone retails for $139 what the heck do you expect ? You want better specs stop being cheap and spend more money then. This phone is for a normal everyday person who just needs a decent phone .

  • Mike

I’m willing to try a windows 10 phone but I’ll wait til a higher end windows 10 phone comes out.

    • Acdc1a

Actually this is a great way to try it. WP does not require the resources Android does to run well.

      • Mike

I rather just wait until a flagship WP 10 drops. I have a Note 5 so it makes no sense to downgrade. I need a phone with a great camera and hopefully it will have xda support.

  • Howard Abraham

I bought this to replace my Lumia 925. I prefer the metal body of the 925. The 925 also has a wider viewing angle. The Fierce XL is easier to hold than the 925 (without cases). The 925 seems more responsive, but I don’t know if that might not be a fair comparison because my 925 isn’t running Win10. NetFlix doesn’t work on the Fierce XL. It says there is a driver issue. There is no camera button on the Fierce XL. I haven’t done extensive tests with the camera, but initial tests show satisfactory results. Streaming video is fine. For a $139 phone, I’d say you could do far worse. This gives me a chance to play with Win10 until the Surface Phone comes out.

  • x

Does Microsoft have a website for WP apps, like Google has the play dot google dot com? I want to see what kind of apps it has.

    • teabaghater

      yes they do

    • beachtrax

Yes . But as I’m finding out a number of the things that I normally download on another phone are already baked into the operating system and seems to work rather well.

    • NewDCFan

its called the microsoft store, then you click on apps. you won’t find anything google related because google said a while back that they would never support any windows mobile phone. there are knock off youtube apps that work better than the official youtube app on android though. windows mobile 10 is quite stable(on my lumia 640).

  • beachtrax

I have my new Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL in use. I already miss the Nokia L640 Glance screen, tap to wake and the much louder alarms/music/ringer. All volume settings all the way up is not enough. The screen is very acceptable and switching around between apps apps is smooth. Hold onto those Lumias. (I already bought three AT&T L640 phones real cheap.) I know I can return it but will give it some time. I do like the Windows 10 experience as it progresses. Maybe I can find a fix for the volume :)
    UPDATE:
As it turns out the volume if left alone will go up by itself during an alarm. I wasn’t giving the phone and the software a fair shake. This phone and Windows 10 Mobile OS is definitely growing on me.

  • Brian G

Does anyone know if this handset will show up as a T-Mo Simply Prepaid device available at Walmart? Walmart has the onetouch fierce xl listed as an Andlroid Lollipop device.

  • todd

When the spec says “16 GB ROM” on T-Mobiles website, is that a mis-nomer? ROM is read-only, is it not?? I am reading this wrong.

    • Brian G

16 GB ROM is the total storage including the onboard operationg System. For example if the OS uses 6 GB, you will have about 10 GB for onboard saves of pictures, files, music, etc.

  • jay

I picked this phone up yesterday. My main phone is the Iphone 6s. Sure the apps aren’t not as abundant as android or ios. So far its a decent phone. Obviously its not a flagship, and i’m actually liking the windows 10 software. The screen is ok, look this is going to be my back up, bored with ios phone. For a cheap phone its fine, bonus is it works with Band 12. No laggy swiping either at least in my use. One BIG thing i noticed is the reception of signal is way way better than my 6s. At my parents house, it was always no service with my iphone, But with this phone I have LTE throughout the house. I do not know if anyone else has noticed that or its been confirmed that iphones do not keep a solid signal or not but I actually streamed netflix on the windows phone inside without a problem. My iphone was nothing but no service unless i stood by a window. I mean put the iphone on the ledge next to the window. So the signal alone made me a fan of this phone,

    • beachtrax

You are so right about the band 12. It’s getting great signal . My iPhone 6s Plus signal is not as good.

      • jay

Is it all iPhones that are horrible with the signal? I know it’s not band 12 at my parents. But my iPhone is so horrible when it comes to holding lte or anything. I’m constantly having to cycle through airplane mode just to get it. Put my iPhone in my pocket and it’s no service. Yet this cheap Windows phone keeps the signal solid. If there isn’t lte at least it keeps a strong 4g signal. My iPhone just drops service. Really annoying.

  • Karyn

i checked it out on Wednesday in Santa Monica CA, for what I need a phone it is perfect fast browser, hopefully timely security updates, though it is only available on simple choice plans $50 not simply prepaid $40 judging from the web, store staff wasn’t sure because phone was on display but not for sale

  • Cornelius Hardy

I went to check it out yesterday because my son cracked his 640. I was surprised to see it mixed in with the other phones. As far as I can tell right away is I like the screen on the 640 better. This one was damaged. The clips they hold the phone to the wall with were on so tight the screen was damaged and side of the phone were cracked. So the screen isn’t good or an amateur installed the phone. I tested the screen a little but it wasn’t responding well. I need to see a good one to judge fairly. Love the blue color. It’s cheap so I’m not expecting it to perform like my 925 or 950xl.

  • x

I’m sorry, I have a bad news for those who got the XL.

And I love giving bad news to good people, assuming you’re good people… Wal-Mart has this phone for 120 USD.

    • beachtrax

That one is the Android version. It is not the T-Mobile band 12 version that’s in my hands right now.

      • x

I said I was sorry. Jk.

But you’re right, I didn’t know there was another phone with the same name.

Are you liking this phone? A friend needs a cheap (price) phone like this, that’s why I was checking Wal-Mart and Best Buy websites to see if they already have it.

        • beachtrax

I like it so far. But I would need to spend more time with it to see about battery, camera and call quality before I would fully recommend it. There are very few reviews on the Windows version to go on.

        • x

          Thanks for sharing that.

        • beachtrax

By the way the signal in places where I had NONE is stellar! In regards to the camera the camera its not up with higher end phones but its it acceptable for daytime photos. Battery is okay so far. I am having fun with this phone. I got a great case for $6.00 on Amazon Prime that is very protective so I can take the phone most everywhere.

        • x

          Thanks.

        • Mike

Don’t expect too much remember this is a budget priced phone. Personally I’ll try a windows phone if a flagship one releases.

        • beachtrax

I just sent back my non Windows $$$ device and I am having more fun for way less investment which is more than I could have expected. Windows 10 on mobile doesn’t seem to need flagship horsepower to run well.

        • Mike

Camera , battery life, and screen resolution to just name a few my note 5 doesn’t lack in that department . Community support on XDA is always a plus as well.

        • beachtrax

I think Alcatel confused more than a few people by doing that. You were just trying to give everyone a heads up on a better price. Thanks for that. That better price may happen if the Windows 10 version does hits Walmart. I think T-Mobile has the exclusive for now.

        • x

If they package the phone for prepaid it may show up for around $100.

  • jimjwilliamson

stopped by the T-Mo store closest to my office on lunch today.. the kid working there informed me they don’t have Windows phones… but he could sell me a Blackberrry…
I wasn’t even going to bother with him, I left…

    • Ordeith

They should be consistent and try to sell you service with ATT or Verizon while pushing you away from T-Mobile, since they seem to love perpetuating duopolies so much.

  • 5.5 inches is not XL for a smartphone in 2016.

    • Oh Well

Hell, It’s big enough. Might as well carry around a lap top
