iOS 9 officially released by Apple

appleios9

If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, it’s time to update, because Apple has released a major new version of iOS.

Yes, iOS 9 is now available for download on a variety of devices. Apple’s new software is available to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 4s, as well as the iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini.

iOS 9 adds several notable features to Apple’s mobile platform. Siri has been beefed up and will now present things like sports scores and weather after you type in what you’re looking for — for example, typing “Packers” will bring up the score of the recent Green Bay Packers game — and Siri will also suggest apps, contacts, and nearby attractions that it’ll think you’re interested in. There’s also a refreshed Notes app with support for sketching with your finger and including photos, an all-new News app (that includes TmoNews!), and an updated Maps app with transit info for select cities.

Also included with iOS 9 are some iPad-specific features, like Slide Over for bringing up small windows for apps like Messages and Notes on the side of the screen. There’s also Picture in Picture, which is exactly what it sounds like, and a new split-screen multitasking feature that’ll let you run two apps side by side. Some of these features are only available to specific iPad models, though, like split-screen multitasking only working on the iPad Air 2.

To check for the update, you can grab your iOS device and go into Settings > General > Software Update. Some folks are getting a “Software Update Failed” message when they try to update; if that’s you, just give it a bit of time and try again.

I GB ..wow that is a Lot… :-) will see…# minutes to go

      • Yea I saw that too. Lol. Have to delete a ton of pics off of mines to make room. Luckily I went with a 64gb on my 6s+

        • Jrunner

Still better than 8 and their bloated 3.5 GB download or whatever it was. That took some doing. I think if you hook it up to itunes on the computer it shouldn’t even be an issue as far as deleting stuff, correct?

        • RedGeminiPA

Correct. Updating through iTunes will rarely require any items be deleted if your iDevice is nearly full.

iOS 9 also brings features to help with this exact issue. It can automatically delete apps for needed install room, then reinstall them after the update is complete.

It’s very professional and clean looking IMHO.

  • take the good person test

Downloaded and preparing update on iPhone 6 Plus. In spite of the fact that I plan on getting a new iPhone 6s Plus anyways.

  • Deihmos

iPhone 6 us now laggy as part of the Apple strategy. Those saying iPhone are butter smooth are kidding themselves. I experienced the same thing with the iPad.

    • mins is running fine, truthfully

    • take the good person test

Laggy doing what? No lag here on 6 Plus.

    • KingCobra

Actually it gave the 6 Plus some desperately needed stability improvements. Way better than it was on iOS 8.

      • Deihmos

There are noticeable stuttering and it is even worse on the iPhone 5

    • RedGeminiPA

I found the exact opposite with my 6. Even older iPhones, like the 4S, 5 and 5S are more responsive than they were under iOS 8, and even 7.

  • SP_Jon_M3

Don’t forget about one of the best features in iOS 9, Content Blockers for Safari! The only ones I see in the US app store so far are 1Blocker, Blockr, Crystal, and Purify. I’ve read that there are good reviews for Purify, but I’m trying out Crystal since it’s free.

  • Derek

iOS 9 SUCKS!!! I hate the new multitasking screen. Hate the swipe right screen with the stupid news that I will NEVER read. Siri still sucks… I hate it all.
Luckily, only my work phone is an iPhone. Still enjoying Lollipop with much satisfaction on my superior Sony Xperia Z1s.

    • RedGeminiPA

Odd… it only took me a few days to adjust. I really like it now. I’ve been running beta for months, and it only got better by official release.

  • Genecio

Did anyone else notice that we’re unable to edit apn settings manually in iOS9?

  • KingCobra

Good news for T-Mobile users is that with iOS 9 we can now use Continuity calls without having to turn off Wi-Fi Calling.
