LG G Stylo and LG Leon receiving Android 5.1.1 updates

lg g stylo leon

Entry-level and mid-range Android smartphones don’t have the best history when it comes to receiving major OS updates, but that’s not the case with the LG G Stylo or LG Leon.

Both the LG G Stylo and LG Leon are receiving updates to Android 5.1.1, which is the very latest publicly-available version of Android. The G Stylo is being updated to software version H63110e, while the Leon is being bumped to H34510e. Both updates are mandatory and include battery life improvements related to Wi-Fi calling and the devices’ displays.

These are sizable updates, with the LG G Stylo’s weighing in at 428.6MB and the LG Leon’s coming in at 316.2MB. They both began rolling out recently and are available over Wi-Fi. The updates become available for download over a cellular connection starting July 9 for the G Stylo and July 10 for the Leon.

As I mentioned earlier, sometimes lower-end phones don’t get big Android OS updates, so it’s great to see the LG G Stylo and LG Leon get bumped up to Android 5.1.1. That’s especially true when you remember that some higher-end phones still don’t have 5.1.1. Hooray LG and T-Mobile!

The LG Sytlo looks like a nice device. I am considering getting this phone. Do any retailers currently sell this phone for less than T-Mobile’s asking price?

    • Rgv123

Currently I’m not too sure if other retailers do. But I know the LG Stylo is a bit different then most carriers when it comes to what internal specs it has versus those of Sprint or Boost. I think the specs it comes with makes a good price range.

      • Mark

Yeah, the specs seem to differ between carriers and I don’t believe any retailers sell the T-Mobile variant as of yet unfortunately.

I got mine for free. LOLOL Turned in my Galaxy S3.. which gave me $300 credit.. sooooooooo :)

        • orlando duran

Where did u turn it in at. No one in their right mind would pay that much for a 3 year old phone

        • GPA

MetorPCS.. Since theyre part of T-Mo now… they upgraded their networks… Soooooooooooooo my S3 was still cdma… and they kept nagging me txts saying my phone wont be good after June 22nd.. Please come in and upgrade LOLOL Sooo I did! :)

      • JJCommonSense

Yeah the sprint version has like 1gb of ram and 8gb of memory. The TMO version has 16gb and 1.5 or 2 gb of ram

  • davetmo

I tried the G Stylo in a Tmo store. I’m coming from a OnePlusOne, my initial reaction was that it’s actually a nice phone. the screen and performance are both good (although I didn’t try very cpu intensive apps). One reason I wanted this phone was because of the stylus, so I can take notes and draw instead of typing everything. In this aspect, the phone works as advertised with its own app and included stylus. Two things I wish LG woulda gotten better (compared to 1+1) were: 1. FHD screen pleeeease? 2. Lose some bezel. Other than that, no complaints. Anyone else considering this phone? Anyone got some other impressions?
Maybe someone can help me figure out if the stylus specific apps can still be side-loaded if I flash a custom ROM. Thanks in advance.

    • JJCommonSense

I actually bought the G Stylo for my mom and played around with it b4 i sent it to her. It was quite impressive. Although, youre right, LG could have gone FHD on that phone.. it is 5.7 inches for god sakes. The 13mp camera was just so-so but could do from a few software bump ups. What matters though is that my mom loves it, coming from a Samsung GS3

    • gmo8492

The thing is you’re comparing two totally different phones here. Don’t get the OnePlus One confused with being a budget smartphone which its not. It is a phone that was sold at razer thin margins to in order to compete with other flagships. LG on the other hand built the stylo to be a budget smarphone with lower but respectable specs. Expect ROM support in the following months, as long as the boot loader is unlockable.

      • g2a5b0e

I could be wrong as well, but that’s not what I got out of his post. I think the point he was trying to make was that he was surprised by how much he liked the Stylo because he was coming from a flagship device. Also, at no point throughout his post did he compare the two phones.

        • gmo8492

“Two things I wish LG woulda gotten better (“compared” to 1+1)”

Um… I think you missed that part of his post.

        • g2a5b0e

          I sure did. Fair enough.

  • steveb944

    Bravo T-Mobile and LG.

  • Amil Avery

  • Android_God

    Do these have FM radios?

    • T-Mobile Cares

With our Music Freedom, there is no need for an FM radio on any T-Mobile device.

  • T-Mobile Cares

Just to update, the LG G3 update started rolling out to our customers today.

    • Amil Avery

When is the update for the g stylo Metropcs version coming out?

      • USA Laws need overhaul

        Its out already..

      • T-Mobile Cares

Unfortunately, we do not have updated information for MetroPCS phones.

        • Devin Caldwell

I received the update this morning. I have metropcs and the LG stylo

    • Jack Packlaian

The 5.1.1 update? The 5.0.1 is the only one I’ve seen this week and is what’s being reported on your website at this time.

  • William Kirschman

I have the Stylo. I’m coming from the G3. SG Note 3 previous. I am very impressed with this phone. Bright screen means good visibility outdoors. Call quality is excellent. Battery life about 30% better than the G3. I can’t see the difference in not having FHD or QHD.

  • Bill Short

    Hi Alex, welcome.
A friend just bought the Stylo at MetroPCS. Does this update apply to her phone?

  • Tmo Guy

both great phones for the price, especially the stylo. cant beat 13mp rear camera for under $300

  • Newb

So, I don’t have the update yet, I’m still on 5.0.2. When am I expected to get this update?

    • Denny Gregory Kushnerov

Don’t accept the update. Not only does it lock down your bootloader permenanfly, there are nearly no changes

      • Newb

Alright, I’ll keep that in mind, but still, when am I expected to get the update?

        • Denny Gregory Kushnerov

Newb, you’ll probably receive it in the next week. But do some googling “LG Stylo 5.1.1 Update xda” and you’ll understand why you wouldn’t want to accept it over the air.

        • Denny Gregory Kushnerov

You can manually flash the update and preserve your unlocked boot loader. I don’t understand why LG decides to restrict a phone that you own. Luckily I flashed the 5.1.1 update manually last night, and it’s perfect. Rooted, and unlocked boot loader which gives me freedom and control with my own phone

  • Dominimmiv

I picked up a Leon this weekend for my 10 year old. I am surprised the little phone works very well and jealous he now has band 12 and VoLTE, features I lack on my G3. There were several areas in the Riverside-Corona Ca. Areas where he picked up band 12 and I dropped to 4G or 2G. Already time for a new phone apparently.

    • Coocoo4cocoapuffs

The G3 does have VoLTE after you are on lollipop

      • Dominimmiv

Very true but the last update killed my G3 and T Mobile had to replace it. Now staying on KitKat waiting for Android M.

  • dontsh00tmesanta

Theres no development anyway on these

  • Need Alert

News Alert—T-Mobile was asked to turn over more customer info than its larger rivals..

  • Hi

I have a LG Leon, didn’t receive the update yet…is this unusual?

    • Andy Rico Vasquez

      Yeah it’s normal for updates

  • Walt

    Havent received the update. 7-11.
    Has Anybody?

  • Andy Rico Vasquez

I have the LG Stylo on Metro PCS and I haven’t received the 5.1.1 update yet. I’ve heard that it makes the camera faster and better battery life along with Wi-Fi battery life. Could be rolled out in stages so it doesn’t crash the software or system.

    • Walt

I called t mobile about the update. They told me its rolled out by the phones serial number. Why cant LG be like apple and update them all at once? There isnt that many stylos and leons out there to “crash” their server

    • 2D

I just got off the phone with metro and the rep told me there is no update planned for these phones. T-mo only?

      • Andy Rico Vasquez

T-Mobile owns Metro PCS so both get updates when there released. Metro don’t know anything because they have no resources or tools to look up the information.

        • 2D

I got off the phone with T-mo right after and their rep said that LG is pushing the update and that the carrier doesn’t matter so it sounds like you’re right. I’ll update as soon as I receive it. The wait is killing me

        • Denny Gregory Kushnerov

Nothkng to wait for. I have the update. Its almost entirely identical visually. There is nothing obviously different. Only the Android version # in the settings is the only manor thing. The battery life is the same. Camera and preloaded apps are all the same. There may be under the hood improvements and thats it

        • ShadowFalls

Actually no that is very often not the case. The Kyocera Hydro Life has Kit Kat (4.4) on T-Mobile while it was Jellybean (4.3) on MetroPCS with no option to update. The Galaxy S4 is the same. The Galaxy S5 got Lollipop for Tmobile while stuck on KitKat still on Metro. It is simply that LG is pushing these updates through and MetroPCS is just horrible at phone updates. It is ridiculous as these phones are basically identical to each other.

    • Denny Gregory Kushnerov

I manually flashed the 5.1.1 update and I can tell you that the camera is identical to the 5.0.1. And the battery life ia the same. The only different thing I notice is the Android version number in the settings

  • Genecio

Finally got the update last night 07/13. I have the LG Leon. I haven’t really looked at it yet. I use my Leon as a back-up to my iPhone 6+. I use the $30 Walmart plan on the Leon.

    • Walt

Great news! Thanks for sharing….anybody else receive the update?

    • 2D

      T-Mobile or metro pcs?

  • 2D

Still no update for me :(

  • gus

7/21/2015 (metropcs lg stylus) updated today woke up to see the system update so updated to the 5.1.1 from 5.0.2 baseband version mpss.dpm.2.0.c11-00014 to mpss.dpm.2.0.c11-00021 build number lrx22g to the lmy47v and software version ms63110a to ms63110d

  • ShadowFalls

This method is important if you ever want to do root. It is pretty easy, otherwise once you apply this update you never have the option again.

  • True Grit

There are no changes. battery stays same…display stays same. Only thing it does is lock out Foxfi, so you won’t be able to use Pda Net anymore. This update is for the benefit of the service provider, not the consumer. They lied to you. They will likely have the update in place already on new phones….sorry suckers

  • christopher paul

5.1.1 killed my battery life on lg leon i can watch the percentage just go down, i cant keep it charged up now

  • christopher paul

I am ready to throw this phone away and get a new one if i cant fix the problems 5.1.1 gave it , not useable now unless you keep a charger close by

  • 2D

Received the update this morning, finally. Leon LTE on MetroPCS

    • 2D

At first glance, the mute feature seems to have been removed and replaced by All Interruptions, Priority Only and No Interruptions, and the clock looks a little different. An Invert Colors option was also added to the quick settings. Battery seems to be draining pretty fast :(

    • HyperSilver Absolution

How’d you get it? I still don’t have it. I just got my Leon August 21st, 2015.

      • 2D

It was just on my phone one morning. I received a notification for a new update

  • Samuel Winchester

What about a stagefright patch for the Leon Like a fool on July 10, I plugged my leon into my PC so I could get the upgrade because OTA was not happening for me yet, so I upgrade but not more than a week after the upgrade I find that this version of Android has a flaw with MMS download that could cause me problems with bank accounts and important stuff like that so now I have a new phone with a new version of android but I can’t download pictures from friends out of fear they might be passing me a trojan horse that is used by A-Holes to steal money from mostly poor people. So is LG going to pass the buck and say any patch needed is T-Mobile’s problem and is T-Mobile going to do the same pass the buck saying any patch is LG’s problem or is LG going to demand that T-Mobile release the patch which they already have?
Oh unlike most here this update did help with battery life I’m getting around 18 extra hours of life out of a charge now so instead of having to charge every night now I can go 2 days between charges. But hey i’m like if I have a ringer why the F would I need to keep vibration on? And if I’m inside not out in the bright sun unless I’m blind I don’t need screen brightness at 100% inside the screen looks good and is readable at 25% Also Volumes if I’m not watching a video or listening to music then I don’t need media volume on, I don’t use notifications so I don’t use the volume ethier. WiFi only use it at home and anyone who is uses wifi on a public network is asking someone to steal there money. I’ve known some idiots out there who have had their bank accounts drained more then 4 times and they still use the free wifi at starbucks

  • Joan OBrien
