Lumia 635 users, Windows 10 technical preview is available to download

A short while ago, Microsoft made the technical preview of its Windows 10 for phones available to download.

In order to install the update you have to be a “Windows Insider” and you’ll need the Windows Insider app installed on your device. As well as that, you’ll need to have one of the supported devices. You’ll also need a supported device. For the first wave, that’s the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 638, Lumia 730 and Lumia 830.

The only device on that list currently available from T-Mobile is the 635. So if you have one, and you meet the criteria, you can download the preview now.

Windows 10 for phones represents a major update for the mobile platform. Joe Belfiore, Windows’ VP took to YouTube (above) to show off some of the new features and changes. Those include the addition of full background images on the Start screen, better app organization, more quick access toggles in Action Center, quick reply on notifications, improved voice to text input and a whole lot more. Belfiore notes that there’s a lot more to come before the software is publicly launched.

You can download the technical preview here, and the Windows Insider app here. As always, let us know how you get on with the software. It’s early beta, so I’d advise against installing it on your main device.

I was planning on putting it on my 1520, but instead I just ordered a 635. Probably better that way since I do use the 1520 for work.

      And you’re with t mobile?

      • mattdistro

        Yes, I have a 1520.3 (RM-938) on T-Mobile.

You got the unicorn, every time I looked for that jewel on negri or newegg it was always out of stock haha, I too have a Lumia 1520 but it’s an att model

  • I like how Microsoft gets the update to non high end phones. Sweet!!

    • eanfoso

Because it was all non high ends that have come out the box with windows 8.1, that’s one of the requirements in the developer web site

This phone is available for less than $100 without any contract.
I was thinking of buying a fancy phone but got a 635 instead and saved a ton of money.
The speakers and driving navigation are great.
I occasionally miss the ability to run an android or iphone app but mostly i’ve been getting by fine.

Like what apps though? There’s this tool online that Nokia made to where whatever android and IOS app you were wondering if Lumia had it would look for that same app or something alike, by the way, you have to admit nothing is better than storyteller!

Win10 technical preview is able to run android apps as I write this ;)

I did install w10 preview on 635 and phone is just too slow, crashing and not working properly.

This phone was $30 on Amazon yesterday… I picked one up to just play around with. It’s very impressive for the price – obviously not an iPhone competitor (primary phone is an iPhone 6 Plus) but again for the money, this is excellent. If I was poor I could make due with this.

As I said to someone earlier – win10 is able to run android apps and developers said almost all of them can be run on the win 10 platform. if that helps.
