T-Mobile, HTC Update G2, myTouch 3G Slide With Minor Updates, No Desserts

Suffice to say that anyone getting their hopes up for an Ice Cream Sandwich update on either device should already be well past a point of understanding that may never happen. It appears that older devices such as the T-Mobile G2 and myTouch 3G Slide just aren’t on the radar for various treats such as Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean.

Be that as it may, there are still bug fixes to go around as both devices receive minor updates that provides the usual mix of security patches, and software stability updates.

The real lesson here is that if you are still in possession of either of these devices, you should be running a custom ROM, no questions asked. Otherwise, the links below will give you all the relevant details and instructions for receiving the updates.

Lol I put a custom ROM on my dad’s G2 but my mom won’t let me root hers…so this is for you mother! lol poor mom…

    • http://weevil.myopenid.com Weevil

Which ROM did you use for the G2?

      • Trevnerdio

        CyanogenMod of course!

  • Daughain

That was why I rooted mine the day I got it. The HTC Vision phones are far more capable than tmo or HTC seem willing to admit.

    • $21107870

Totally agree. Its a great phone and very under appreciated

  • galaxydude

People still have and use these devices.
    Time to upgrade people.

    • $21107870

Ever heard of a two year contract?

      • fixxmyhead

hasnt 2 years been over for that phone? no offence but cant u afford like 350$ even for an unlocked GN. its really not that much. this is coming from someone who pays all the rent by himself and gets low pay and doesnt rely on goverment handouts

        • $21107870

Not sure when these came out, but my contact ends November first, just a few months away. No offense taken.

        • fixxmyhead

oh ok. could of sworn it was already 2yrs cuz its so old hardly anyone mentions it

        • butch81385

Congrats on “paying rent” (something I started doing at age 18). Does mommy and daddy still pay your bills for you though? For some of us, we own houses, and pay real bills (mortgage, student loans, car payments, utilities), and pay for everything else we do. Do I have $350? Yes. But it isn’t going to be spent on getting a brand new phone every 6 months. I have better things to spend $350 on.

        • Deadeye37

All depends on priorities.  Do I have $350 to buy a GN?  Yes. Will I buy it?  Probably not because that money would be better spent towards putting my kid through pre-school (not day care), or a family vacation, or fixing something in my house.

Free with contract extension (plus fees), is a big difference from $350.

        • fixxmyhead

yea i guess. good thing i dont have kids… yet but i do have 2 loveable  dogs as u can see from my avatar that i spoil soo much. there like my kids and are pretty costly cuz i buy them good food, only organic stuff none of that filler processed garbage. also have 2 red eared sliders, 2 bunnies, 4 hamsters and pretty soon a cat somehow i make it work

        • Mgmessner

Are you really calling out people that don’t have money? Congrats on paying rent, its called life.

        • fixxmyhead

thanks, surviving is the name of the game

    • MacRat

My G2 is only 8 months old.

  • Deceptivesmiles

Meh, big whoop. I don’t care about any updates at this point on my G2. Waiting to see what Google is releasing in November. I’m done with purchasing phones from my provider

    • fixxmyhead

get a real flagship next time. i know this phone was like big when it came out but at this point only real flagships are gonna get the latest updates. rocking official aokp JB on my branded s2 working pretty flawless with camera and camcorder working.

      • Deceptivesmiles

That’s true, however, I’m tired of the delay w/ updates bc carriers have to put their crap on it and slow down the process

        • fixxmyhead

thats why u root and flash. im rocking vanilla JB courtesy of aokp. also i actually love touchwiz and when JB touchwiz comes out im gonna try it out but until then im using vanilla JB. as long as u get a good flagship chances are there gonna be supported by the cm team

  • $21107870

Why bother with any sort of update on the G2 (an under appreciated phone) unless its to 4.0-4.1? My contact ends Nov 1st and it will be time to switch carriers and possibly get an iPhone.

    • Ford_Thundercougarfalconbird

Get and iPhone and pay for updates. Great idea!

      • $21107870

I have had an iPad for years and never paid for a software update. My wife has had iPhones for years and never paid for an update. So I have no idea what you are referring to. But actually I am inclined to drop T-Mobile due to coverage issues, not due to iPhone vs Android.

      • MacRat

There is no cost for iOS or the updates.

  • TMoFan

Still using my G2. It’s a great phone and don’t see a reason to switch to something newer before my upgrade. Waiting to see how the One X plays out.

    • http://weevil.myopenid.com Weevil

Agreed – great phone and no rush to replace it. I’m now on the Value Plan and will need a TMO branded phone for Wi-FI calling. If it wasn’t for this requirement I’d get a Galaxy Nexus from Google Play.

  • Deadeye37

I’m still sporting my G2.  I’m going to root my phone probably this week so that I can speed things up.  Any suggestions on a good ROM?

     I’m thinking of Mimicry 1.3.2.

My only qualm is that I don’t want to brick my phone since this is my only cellphone.

    • Sprite

Rooting is virtually idiot proof at this point. If you can follow directions, it is extremely easy. Don’t be afraid because of the potential danger. The experts have taken care of us.

      • Deadeye37

Its not the rooting portion that worries me, since HTC has an official method to do this for the G2.  However, loading a new ROM is what has me a little concerned (although it sounds pretty straight forward)

        • Sprite

It is extremely easy. Flash in recovery or flash via CWM. You seem to have done your research already. If one ROM doesn’t work, try another. it does get addicting, though.

    • Ford_Thundercougarfalconbird

Just don’t expect WiFi calling to work. If you need it, you’re SOL with any custom ROMs for the G2.

      • Deadeye37

It appears that they have WiFi calling working for some of the custom ROMs.

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664106

The reason why I’m going with Mimicry is because they use the Aroma installer and they have included that WiFi calling as a part of the package

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187

Basically, it looks like a safer installation process than some of the other ROMs.  However, if there are other ROMs out there that have a similar setup, I’d like to know about them before I pull the trigger on rooting my phone & getting a new ROM installed.

      • $21107870

This is why I haven’t rooted mine and also why I am leaving T-Mobile. I live on the west side of Las Vegas and have no coverage in my neighborhood, so I am 100% dependent on WiFi calling if I stay with T-Mobile. I really wish HTC & T-Mobile had done something to get ICS on this phone. Its a great phone.

        • Deadeye37

WiFi calling is working on some of these ROMs.  Check out my earlier post in this thread with the appropriate links to the XDA forums.  Mimicry 1.3.2 includes the WiFi calling updates as a part of the installer.

    • SP

glite 2.0.1 its based of the stock 2.3.4 gb rom, but its superlight, quick and amazing battery life. Good luck with the rooting process here are a few guides. I originally used the video from
( http://g2hacks.com ) to root my phone, but here is the most up to date method
      ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD )

    • Prof_Impossible

Mimicry is a great choice, though the camera won’t record 720p if that matters. I have been using IILWT for awhile and love it, probably best gingerbread rom for the G2. It also can use the aroma installer, though I prefer the txt-based method better. Also wifi calling works on it. However it is getting a little stale w/ dev work, so I will probably go to mimicry until the batch of google phones comes out this fall.

For rooting it has been so long for me, but I wouldn’t bother with the official HTC method, it seems cumbersome.

  • Grimbeaver

I put Virtuous G-Lite on mine before giving it to my mom.  Supports Wifi calling and 100% of the apps can be uninstalled.  Super lightweight.

  • jawash22

Speaking of old phones…tmo is selling the hd2 to value plan customers but listing them as new, although 3 CS reps told me they are refurbs. Using Value plan people who pay full price to unlawfully sell refurbs. They did same thing last week with the Astound too. If you are on Value plan check your upgrade page to confirm. I reported it but I doubt they fix it.scumbags.

  • SP

I had on GLite 2.0.1 on my g2 aswell , i had amazing battery life. One of my favorite roms. Wish virtuous team would release a lite jelly bean rom for the gnex.

  • Realest Ever

I wish they would either upgrade the G2 to ICS or come out with a G3 already. I mean its about time for the next iteration of this phone anyway stemming from the two year wait time period between the G1 and G2.  I love my G2 and really don’t plan on ditching it until its obsolete or they come out with a G3 because its best android phone out with a full qwerty keyboard and I do not want to transition to a all touch screen phone.
