damn! i spent 2 hours hacking my g2 last week to run ICS!!

      LOL

      • Deceptivesmiles

Lol, right. Talk about irony. I was going to do the same but didn’t have time. Glad I didn’t.

Not to just LOL but I feel your pain.  I started the process of just rooting my wife’s Sensation but quit when I saw how much was involved in the process.  My GS2 was a breeze to root.

For real. I have rooted everything from the g1 to the galaxy s to the galaxy tab. This was by far the worst :P

    • http://twitter.com/Foamy0665 Sir Spanks A Lot

How does ICS run by the way?

      • Anonymous

Almost perfect. I have a galaxy nexus too. just about identical performance. only thing that doesnt work is the camera.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wally-SirFatty/100002167236858 Wally SirFatty

Almost perfect… except the camera doesn’t work.  Right.

Many people never use the camera so that not working isn’t a big deal for them.  For you (or I) it might be a deal breaker but it’s hardly critical to the operation of the phone.

        • CT

          Flash doesn’t work either.

        • J-Hop2o6

Flash does work. It works for Stock & Dolphin (or all Webkit browsers). It doesn’t work for Opera tho. Which ICS rom on your G2 are u using? I’m using Andromadus Alpha 8. They got the camera working now on the G2, so the next update should be today or tomorrow.

        • Anonymous

For me because I have enough phones not to worry about the Camera not working on one of them.

    • Antoine M.

i just spent an hour the other day doin the same

    • Nick

      which ICS ROM?

      • J-Hop2o6

Andromadus or Quattro.. I use Andromadus. I read Quattro has graphical issue right now tho.

  • JQuest

I’m still rocking a MT4G… Hope they get around to that soon…

    • Anonymous

I will be SHOCKED if they update that MT.  We have one in our family so I’m crossing my fingers as well.

      • Hamster

I’d have agreed with you before this announcement, but I didn’t give the G2 much chance either. The MT4G is practically the same age as the G2, has better hardware, and, as I recall, a similar rooting process. The G2 getting unlocked makes me more optimistic about the MT4G.

        • J-Hop2o6

Both have been unlocked for a year now.

  • Anonymous

Since the bootloader is unlocked, does that mean that I can get root access on my phone, too without having to resort to any exotic measures?  My 1 year warranty is almost up and I’m debating about doing some tweaking/overclocking.

    • J-Hop2o6

The 3rd party unlocking way doesn’t void your warranty like the HTC way does. Just go over to the unlocker.com for a simplified version to unlock your G2. I’ve been unlocked for a year now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Vosko Jon Vosko

Has anyone gotten this to work? It says error wrong setup file or something

    • J-Hop2o6

Don’t use the HTC way since it will void your warranty. Head over to XDA or unlocker.com to unlock your G2. Unlocker really simplifies it for users. I’ve been unlocked for a year now.

      • Hcnguy

That doesn’t work with 2.34, the latest on G2s.  It worked with all previous os and Visionary + is obsolete.  To make it work, one has to downgrade back to 2.2. A real pain.  Might as well go the HTC way.

        • J-Hop2o6

          Wow, didn’t know that.

  • Anonymous

Most of you guys on this site are very tech savvy so can i ask? What exactly does this unlock mean? Can i download ICS on my G2 without rooting it?  Can I get most apps that were only limited to rooted phones? Thanks for the help.

    • Jgaleas2011

rooting is to android as jail breaking is to iPhone…. when you root or hack your phone you can change ROMs or just have more control over your phone. Theres no way to install ICS w/o root at the moment theres only test roms for ICS

    • J-Hop2o6

Oops, didn’t mean to +1 you. But u WANT to root your phone. It lets u run apps that request root/su like adfree, TitaniumBackup, etc. Bootloader unlocker lets you flash custom roms and kernels.

  • Nick

This was the first phone I ever rooted and it was very simple.  It took maybe 30 minutes from start to finish thanks to xda.

Glad that this phone is still on HTC’s radar.  I’m still curious to see if they’ll officially release 4.0 for it.  I’m thinking that it’s specs aren’t good enough though.

    • Anonymous

From what I’ve read the only major issue with 4.0 is the Camera driver(s) need to be updated by HTC. But I wonder if unlocking the bootloader = no more OTA updates?

      • J-Hop2o6

Has nothing to do with OTA updates.

    • Jgaleas2011

i think they might, well hopefully they do anways, im actually running ICS on my G2 its a beta ROM for virtous and it really just breathed new life to my phone. either way its always good to see them support the G2 imo its one of the best phones TMo has had in last 2 years

    • J-Hop2o6

I doubt HTC will update the G2/Desire Z/Vision. And the G2 is able to run ICS smoothly since im running the ICS rom Andromadus Alpha 8 right now which has True HW acceleration running. The next update today or tomorrow will have the camera working. They have proof its already running on the G2 & the Desire HD (which the original fix came from).

      • Anonymous

Thats awesome about the camera. I may need to do this once updated

      • http://diamondsdealer.net Professor Chaos

Can anyone explain me how to run Andromadus versions? There is not even a single wiki which explains this :( I am currently running CyanogenMod 9 which is not so stable

  • Anonymous

My guess is when they unlock the bootloader it basically means say goodbye to OTA updates and the possibility of getting ICS on the G2. Maybe I’m being negative, but that’s how I am reading between these lines.

    • Nick

No, that’s not what it means.  HTC is following through on a promise.  They’ve unlocked the bootloader for other phones that will continue to receive OTA updates like the Sensation.

  • Bravosfan1025

I can’t seem to get this to work. I get to the end when you enter the command prompts and it says command error. I downloaded all the files and followed the instructions. Anyone have any idea why this would be happening?

  • Bigtsphoneblog

Talk about too little, too late. My G2′s bootloader was unlocked like, a year ago. I think anyone who wanted this phone unlocked would have done so by now. I’m still rocking the G2 with CM7…and overclocked to 1516 MHZ, it still seems faster than some of the current phones running Gingerbread.

  • Dloera84

Whats steps are required to installing customs roms after I have used unlocked boot loader? Once I use bootloader does this root my phone?

    • http://twitter.com/GershonChapman Gershon Chapman

That’s what I’d like to know as well.

    • J-Hop2o6

Its root > bootloader unlock (via gfree — don’t do the HTC way) > install Recovery (CWmod or Ext4) > Flash custom rom via Recovery.

  • Smoovebcoffee

Does this mean I can finally scrape photobucket off of my phone? It’s the only crapware that I’ve experienced on the G2.

    • J-Hop2o6

If u don’t care for custom roms just root your phone instead, then install TitaniumBackup and uninstall the apps you dont want. Bootloader unlock is to allow flashing custom roms.

  • http://twitter.com/GershonChapman Gershon Chapman

Anybody else getting error 154 when trying this? It’ll tell me the image version from 2.16.531.5 to 2.16.531.5(which is currently on my phone). Then it’ll try to do the update for 3sec then gives me the error.

    • J-Hop2o6

Just use the non-HTC way since HTC will void your warranty (they will have your phone in their system).

      • Anonymous

Seriously, anyone waiting for this to root their g2 probably shouldn’t root their phone.

      • Brian Eng

Wondering why unlocking via HTC would void the warranty.  Given that this is the manufacturer itself that is providing the solution, wouldn’t this be the preferred method?

  • http://profiles.google.com/truckeemike mike s

    AWESOME!!

  • J-Hop2o6

? How? I said unlockr. I was just lazy to direct to the exact link, which isn’t hard to do. Meh.

  • YOLO

Ok I need a lot of help I want to be able to root my phone and delete the crap apps and be able to do screen shot but I don’t have the slightest clue in how to can anyone give me a step by step what to do to achive it thnks ill apreciate it

  • Sompom

My G2′s funky flex screen cable broke… I called HTC and they basically said “Sorry, we don’t warranty those because they break so often”
At least that saved me the effort of unrooting — I had to fix it myself :/

  • Awydidbdjdjv

It there a guide to root the g2? thanks

  • Awydidbdjdjv

Oh and btw does 4g speeds get affected with the roms?
