Samsung Says No To Ice Cream Sandwich On Original Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab 7″ Line

Samsung has just dropped some news that is likely to upset a lot of original Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 7” owners unhappy. The company is arguing that because both devices lack sufficient RAM and ROM to run Ice Cream Sandwich, they cannot be expected to receive the update. This is a disappointing blow to owners of the original Galaxy S, who had expected their 1GHz Hummingbird processor and available memory would have been able to handle the ICS update. In fact, the original Galaxy S has the same hardware as the Nexus S, which is receiving the Android 4.0 update now.

Samsung says the difference between the two devices is software as the Nexus S runs the original basic Android OS, where the Galaxy S has to consider TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software and mobile TV.

For original Galaxy S owners, this is rightly disappointing and news that is bound to leave a bad taste in the mouth of Galaxy S owners. What say you original Galaxy S owners?

Score one for bloat and skin haters…

This is gonna be a huge mark against Samsung because companies like Sony will be putting ICS on similarly spec’d phones that also “has to consider a custom UI, carrier services, video calling software and mobile TV.”

    What a cop-out Samsung…

Well of course, sir! Great for them…..sucks for us….. ;(

        • Anonymous

Exactly, Shamesung’s idea of an upgrade is for you to buy a new phone.  It would matter less if they didn’t integrate their touchwiz into android.

because too much ICS will kill you.

I say other phone manufacturers might have record sales this Christmas because of this. I really hope they turn around and do the update.

    • Anonymous

You know Christmas is less than 2 days away right?

  • http://twitter.com/czarsuperstar Rodney Etienne

That is a bunch of bull. The purpose of 4.0 was to put an end to fragmentation.(i.e HTC Sense, Motoblur, and Touchwiz) So what is the problem. Do away with Touchwiz and join the defragmentation SAMSUNG.

    • Gsm1900

I dont think that was the purpose of ICS. I think the purpose was to combine tablet and handheld OS versions, but I did not see anything saying google wanted to do away with custom UIs. Source?

      • Anonymous

        People believe what they want.

  • AV

meh… wasn’t holding my breath for my phone to get it but I agree it’s a bummer that they did that when other makes are pushing out the update to older phones.  at least the S2 is confirmed to get it.

    • Anonymous

Yeah I bought this with 100% confidence that it will get ICS.

I knew the Vibrant would go from 2.1 to 2.2 but doubted 2.3.  This time around is no different.  I know the GS2 will go from 2.3 to ICS but I’m not gonna be hoping for Jellybean once the rumors start flying.

I think a good indicator as to whether or not the GS2 will get Jellybean will be the GS3.  If the GS3 has a advanced Dual-Core processor instead of a Quad-Core one then I can see the “old” GS2 receiving a second major update in its lifetime.

      • http://pharaohtechblog.blogspot.com/ Conan Kudo (???????)

Currently, the Galaxy S III is slated to have a dual core processor.

  • Anonymous

Wait, so basically they aren’t updating not because they can’t but because they don’t want to be bothered adapting Touchwiz? Not even that they can’t do it, don’t have the resources to do it or even the time to do it, they just don’t care to.

Nice to see Samsung’s recent success these last years hasn’t changed their attitudes towards supporting their products.

Shades of the Behold II anyone?
Feel sorry for the Galaxy S owners and fear the future a year from now for my S II.

    • http://twitter.com/dhsteeler David Herron

I’m considering buying a SII. I have the vibrant and because of things like this I’m also considering the Amaze 4G. Your thoughts now that you have a GSII?

      • Iterate

Same story for G2. GO WITH THE AMAZE.

      • Anonymous

It’s an incredible phone performance wise and the screen is gorgeous. Not fond of Touchwiz so I threw GOLauncher on there. Knowing Samsung’s propensity to discard supporting their products after Les than a year I almost went with the Amaze, which I’d recommend anyhow just for HTC’s always solid construction and support record.

Only thing that convinced me to grab this instead was a) I had a gift card so free phone without extending contract and b) i’m eligible for my full upgrade in August.

  • HSPA+overPCSeverywherePlease

Samsung says, “There is not enough space to annoy you with bloatware. We will annoy you instead by not updating to the new version.”

  • Jane johns

The gingerbread update has been helpful, I’m not certain if the Ice Cream Sandwich non update is really a software issue, or if they are pushing their newer line of phones. I will keep what I have (Galaxy S 4G) until I HAVE to replace it, then shop for something else that is current at that time.

  • Sakmaniac

Really? They can’t? I think it’s more likely they don’t want to. I’ve seen ICS running on the Vibrant. Just YouTube it… obviously it can run it! So much for that commitment of 18 months worth of upgrades!

    • Anonymous

Surely that Vibrant you saw was stripped of its TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software and mobile TV in order to make room for ICS…  Nah not really.

  • Robash_g

xda developers ftw.  Just let the devs over there do their magic and you will be running 4.0 on your Galaxy S in no time.

  • Anonymous

Wow, you couldn’t have seen that coming.   But really, why are you complaining, Samsung graced you with TouchWIZ, didn’t they.  Don’t be ungrateful.  Why in the world would you need ICS?  I mean, touch wiz lags your phone, locks up requiring battery pulls every day, locks when you try to load the gallery.  I mean really, why would want ICS under those circumstances?

Friends don’t let friends buy Samsung

  • Al Chandler

But yet the Nexus S with the same spec is getting ICS. The SGS can run ICS but it cant run both TW and ICS. That is why I did not get the SGS2 it is going to be the same thing for that phone. With the GNEX I know I will be getting at least two upgrades from 4.0.

  • Anonymous

My Vibrant was unusable from day 1 until I installed Team Whiskey’s ROM. Even then, GPS has never worked.  Then I was told (by T-Mobile) I’d be getting Gingerbread on my T-Mobile Vibrant.  That didn’t happen, so I didn’t really expect to get ICS on the Vibrant.  I’m tired of the misinformation, vague assurances and failure to perform to stated specs of these expensive phones. I like most of the specs of the new Galaxy Nexus (if it ever comes to T-Mobile), but it’s a Samsung phone so I’ll probably pass.

    • Fujitsujeff

Same as above. No more samsung phones for me.

    • Iterate

      Same here. No more Samsung

    • Anonymous

WOAH there! I don’t think anyone who buys a samsung product expects updates. XDA has a fully working ice cream sandwich build for the vibrant now though. Using it and couldn’t be happier. Try it out, and even though still being developed, the vibrant has one of the first ics builds out there.

      • Anonymous

And that is fine for those with the time and skills to root and install custom roms.  Most people do not have the skill, or time to learn it.  Even for those that do, if no Devs have developed for your phone then you are out of luck.  The Sidekick4g is stuck on froyo and no devs have been able to get gingerbread on it.

This is definitely the last shamesung anything for me.  Friends don’t let friends buy samsung.

  • Anonymous

To bad thy can’t adapt the OS for less capable devices, would make fragmentation less of a consideration when purchasing android devices ;)

  • Disconnect

Funny, since I’m reading this on a tab 7 with ics :-) no hw accel yet and it still works fine…

  • Mystrobiggz

Cyanogenmod!!!  I don’t need Samsung updates on my Vibrant!

    • Anonymous

Didn’t they drop support on the Vibrant due to lack of 911?

      • http://twitter.com/Poobank Bo Thomas

yes they did but you can still get it. you can also get ICS 4.0.3 beta which seems to be working fine for me now. everything works camera/video recorder/gps.. and so on

    • Iterate

CM dropped support for Vibrant. Without source code and drivers the phone is unable to make emergency 911 calls and no GPS location tracking. YOU NEED SOURCE without that developers can’t release a fully functional romantic.

      • Iterate

        Romantic = rom
        auto correct. Lol

  • 30014

At some point google us going to have to get involved with this skinning fiasco. This makes the entire android platform look bad not just the manufacturer. I can hear microsoft now saying “google can’t even guarantee your phone will get the latest android update.” Hell I’ve even seen youtube videos with the tmo g2 running ics. Because of the behold 2 debacle no one should be surprised by samsung. Now I wait for the samsung fanboys to justify samsungs actions. As long as I’m with android it’s nexus from here on out.

  • http://twitter.com/dhsteeler David Herron

Doing an in-store comparison I really like the Galaxy S II better than the Amaze 4G. I have a Vibrant now and things like this are making me re-consider the Amaze 4G. Any comments?

    • Eli Thomas

After what Samsung did to my Vibrant with the poor execution of the Froyo update, I decided to go off-contract and purchased the Amaze. I love it. I really struggled with the Galaxy S II because of its good reviews and pretty awesome specs, what finally made the decision for me was Samsung’s poor support of the original Galaxy S series. The Amaze does weigh more but it is a really nice piece of hardware, smooth and snappy. Samsung only supports its products until the next generation comes out, and since most people are locked into a 2 year contract it would sure be nice to see more than 8-12 months of updates.

Thank god I never bought one, but then again that goes for 99% of android powered phones, crossing your fingers and pray you get an update.

  • Tmosince2003

If I could remove the bloatware, there would not be this problem. Touchwiz is ok, but i do not use mobile tv or half the other crap they put on and I can’t uninstall. Color me annoyed, we have both devices.

  • Gun2hd

Easy fix. Only purchase Nexus line.

    • Anonymous

suck it up, and go Apple? I’m leaning in that direction since the Android UI people’s poor attitude that they don’t see UI issues to fix.

Saw this one coming a mile away…This is why I use a custom rom. I have been using passion rom for about 3 days and I am really impressed. It is android version 4.03 and runs pretty smooth. Being in beta it still needs some tweaks but is an awesome rom.

This is why Apple wins, I’m beginning to think. Had enough of fragmented OEM updates from the WinMob days.

      • http://twitter.com/josemedina1983 Jose Medina

I think Apple wins because is a US company with a US mentality with  itunes & app store that alone is a HUGE driving force. Samsung is a Korean company so since the symbian days their plan was to flood the market and somewhat copy the competition but on steroids.

        • Frigadroid

You can add to that samsdung doesn’t give a rats ass about tmobile or the american market in general. The average samsdung executive considers americans to be stupid & lazy enough to wait for what every leftovers they want to pawn off our way. That includes their manufactured defects and cheapo rebrands with features missing and lower specs.
I hope nokia & motorola will have something to get excited about by valentines day, because right now I’m not interested in any tmobile offering.

        • Anonymous

          Did Samsung hurt you?

        • Frigadroid

Naw I’m not nearly as angry as I make out to be. I just like to complain. Since they sold me a defective product and tried to make out like nothing was wrong I’m going to let people know about it as long as I live.
Thankfully tmobile replaced my first day vibrant with a better refurb after 6 months of troubleshooting. So now I’m over it since my vibrant is stabile 90% of the time. If samsdung hadn’t let me down I wouldn’t have anything to bitch about.
Besides if you research samsung corporate history & understood korean politics and social hierarchy you might understand why they are boycotted & considered one of the most corrupt companies in the world.

        • http://twitter.com/josemedina1983 Jose Medina

Not only Samsung if you look @ Motorola,Sony,HTC,BlackBerry they now have to spend millions of bucks on a team of developers something they didn’t really spent in the past. Nokia did the smart move they left it to MS to worry about updates they focus on hardware especially since they failed to update symbian until their maketshare was falling dramatically.

Im kind of disappointed with Samsung now Now Its Making Me Think About Getting Sgs2 :/ i hate Htc & Never would Get an LG phone & Nexus is and Ugly Phone i would never ever get that eww¡ Like BlackBerry Dont Like Windows Anymore but its okay Love My Iphone :D But I Love Android Way More!

  • JustThought

One more time company shows us that they care about cash in the pockets, not about quality of their brand. (That how Apple became largest, by quality of brand. Disclaimer – i am on Vibrant).

    • Anonymous

Stop crying. You weren’t promised or guaranteed any updates. Sorry you can’t afford a newer, better phone but stop blaming the manufacturers

      • Anonymous

:)  That is so, other than my behold II that Shamesung said they would update and did not do so (I still have a copy of the promotional video on my HD somewhere), Shamesung has never said they will update anything.

I can afford anything I want, always buy my phones outright.  At this point I don’t care if they update my wife’s SidekickFail4G,  I would just like it to actually work as advertised.  You know, little things like actually being able to answer a call without it locking randomly.  Or maybe look in the gallery at a picture to show off some stupid thing your kids did without it locking requiring yet another battery pull.

So when I talk badly of Shamesung, it is not because they are not upgrading me to a new version of android, it is because their implementation using touchwiz is so buggy as to be worse than most betas I have put on my nexus.

No surprise here who actually though samsdung would care? I knew the pitiful attempt at froyo was all we would get. That’s why I’m staying true to my word no samsdung products in my home, except this vibrant. That’s how they always do business little to no support. Low quality companies like samsdung and LG are hurting android and are leading people away to iphone and windows.

Additionally, the Sprint Galaxy S II has the same chip and RIL as the Sprint Epic 4G, so it has the same problem too. The T-Mobile Galaxy S II is not affected since they use a Qualcomm RIL that is well understood by now.

  • Bkidko

I thought they already released a list and it was not on it. This seems like they are just rubbing it in.

I can do without video chat on my Vibrant, seeing as how it lacks an important piece of hardware that would greatly improve the experience.

I do not understand this announcement. One would think that they would not want to re open old wounds.

Samsung is the GM of the wireless industry, cannot wait for them to shoot themselves in the foot.

        • Anonymous

Haha ok. Next week I am picking up the SGS2 for $129 via Target mobile. The Sensation will go to my wife.
Came real close to the Amaze but the killer price on the SGS2 sealed the deal.

      • Vim

Given that Samsung worked closely with Google on the Galaxy Nexus and thus had a head start on ICS, it would look pretty bad for Samsung if the S2 didn’t get ICS first.  But I’m fairly certain that the S2 will never see Jelly Bean while the Amaze will.

    • http://twitter.com/Cityboy10 Glenn Wimberly

Tmo emp’s know HTC is the way to go. For Samsung the Galaxy is their best effort so far but still behind others. Samsung has always dragged their feet for so long that they wait till its years later so they can say its outdated and never deploy new versions. F’em.
