T-Mobile G2 owners should be on the lookout for a small update heading out Over-The-Air to your phones as of October 17th. The update provides a few minor improvements and will rollout over the next few weeks:

  • Google Security Patch
  • Google Skymap improvements
  • Battery life improvements

You can sit back, relax and wait for the OTA or for the “I need to have the update now” G2 owners amongst you, you can go to Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Updates and check for the update.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah I did this update yesterday at noon and my phone never turned back on! I tried a hard reset, the LG update tool, went to a store even used a technician at work (I’m a T-Mobile Employee) and still no luck. So I’m getting a new phone delivered today….And I will not be doing this update!!

Sir, this update is for the T-mobile HTC G2 not the LG G2x. So if you did this update on your LG G2x then I can understand why your phone screwed up.

      • Crey23

LOL…….made me spill my coffee!  2.3.4 is old news…I’m already running 2.3.5

        • Jnewman1991

          2.3.7 here.

        • Anonymous

and 4.x on the horizon. HTC is looking slow these days.

        • Yomomma

i got 2.3.8!!! let’s quit making up numbers here!

        • Anonymous

Which numbers are made up? ICS is 4.x. Honeycomb is 3.x. Latest CM7 GB is 2.3.7. You’re making up the numbers.

          Pass your drugs along.

        • Vican

Thats because you probably rooted. I rooted my g1 but I did not feel like rooting my g2.

    • BUA

WAKE UP !!!! I SEE WHAT KIND PEOPLE TMOBILE HAVE!!!

    • Mark Terry II

You’re a T-Mobile employee and you don’t know the difference between a G2 and a G2x? And the alleged technician you conscripted to assist you in your stupidity didn’t smack you in the forehead for being so stupid? And your phone is getting replaced despite that fact that you deliberately screwed it up yourself by attempting to manually flash a patch that wasn’t delivered OTA?

I’m calling shenanigans on this one. On the other hand, if T-Mo employees really are this dumb then maybe the AT&T acquisition isn’t such a bad thing after all… *facepalm*

      Lmao, that’s effin’ hillarious.

  • Jules097

Wait when we got the Gingerbread OTA update it said 2.3.4 when you looked at the settings

    • Vican

Yes, it is still 2.3.4 but the software version is being updated. It will still be 2.3.4 but with software version 2.16.531.5. What we have now is 2.15.531.3

  • sjsmr2

Anyone have a download location/update.zip file yet for this?

    • Vican

It seems like nobody has got this update yet. Over at the Tmobile support website, nobody seems to be excited about it…no big woop, i guess.

    • sjsmr2

I was able to manually install thanks to the Wiki over on XDA. They have the DL link from Google’s servers. 2.16 installed and works great.

If you root a corporate phone and use a mail client you will be hosed. If you root, you get the boot. So give a hoot and dont pollute!

BTW, the G@ has never received upgrades on time. Best way is to send it back on warranty and the dodo’s will send you a reconditioned one.

    Bring on ATT!!!

The main reason for this is to fix a glitch with Google Sky Map.  Since Gingerbread, when you try to update Sky Map, you get an error that it wasn’t signed correctly. The fix for this is to uninstall Sky Map, which can’t be done since it’s in the firmware.  That’s really all it is.

That guy may have read the article wrong but there was an update sent to my phone yesterday too for the G2X but mine didn’t kill my phone or anything im not sure what the update was for though

Thats just an LG thing Ive had an optimus a g2x and a gslate and they aaaallllllllll randomly shut off the G slate pisses me off more cause it cost so much but im a galaxy man now

A fix just for Google Sky? The first fix just hid it but the damn auto-update check box is check and can’t be uncheck until it updates. This one let’s it be installed?

How about a fix for the phone turning itself off and I have to pull the battery to fix it problem.

    • JBLmobileG1

I second your last comment. While it doesn’t happen alot it can be annoying. Plus my otterbox case is breaking because of that.

      • darkness

I received my case replacement from otterbox twice now w/ no problem!

    • TMoFan

Yes the random restarts issue needs to be fixed. My G2 doesn’t do it all the time but it’s really annoying when it does.

    • ihatefanboys

if your phone was restarting it means it was defective and u shoulda got a new one and not assume it was a software problem, and bitch about it on the internet….mine has never had an issue with restarting…

Thankfully I’m running CM 7.1 and I don’t have to worry about any of this. But kudos to T-Mobile for issuing a bug fix anyway :)

    • Anonymous

Right! With CM7.1 at 2.3.7, going to T-Mobile’s 2.3.4 is rolling backwards in time.

I wonder if this will fix the problem with my G2 randomly losing signal.

Sooo what about random  signal loss, phone shutting down and the clear tape suggestion for the battery to prevent any and all of the above.? They nave got to do better than this.

  • Johno

Haven’t done the first Gingerbread update on mine yet….   Anyone know of any major issues with it, or should I go ahead and let it roll?

  • x6369x

Got my update this morning, so far so good.  I haven’t experienced any power down/random re-boots, but then again I am using an OEM HTC battery from a HTC EVO (1500mAh).

  • Mark Terry II

I got my update the day after this article posted. I’ve seen no differences (other than the fix for the Google Sky Map updating issue). I never had problems with random restarts or poor battery life. In fact, my G2 has had stellar battery life which is the main reason I haven’t upgraded to anything else. I routinely get 10+ hours per day with moderate to heavy use, and over 24 hours with light use (a few calls, lots of texts, taking a few dozen photos). Battery performance on this phone has been absolutely phenomenal.

  • guest

Just received the update; don’t know yet what it will do for my phone. I’ve never had any problems or complaints about this phone anyway, and battery life is excellent already.

  • Vcan

Just got the update here in Georgia at 420am. That’s weird because I got the last update on the same night and around the same time.

  • Anonymous

Got my update just now. I was able to update Google Sky Maps with no problem. My signal seems better, too. Time to put it through it’s paces.

  • Vcan

15 hours after getting update, my battery is worse. As soon as I updated, my battery started decreasing quickly. Im gonna do a battery conditioning to see what happens and after that, I will report back.

  • Okn0003

This is odd,i just finally got the update just a moment ago. My phone when I had got it to actually update to gingerbread a while back, I had the same problem with the google sky map issue thing with it can’t be updated…but after a while it was able to update on it’s own anyways.it’s funny how I finally got this update and the problem has been solve already.battery likewise I have yet to find out.it better last long, with the way I’m using it, it just dies quick even though I try my best to not drain the battery life. Sighs. (Makes me want to turn to the iphone everytime I see my phone is about to die)
