(Update: Official) Samsung And Google Postpone Galaxy Nexus/Nexus Prime Launch, Ice Cream Sandwich Debut

Update: Samsung has just updated their global blog to reflect the postponement of the event.

In a move that at first glance (and based on their short press release)seems related to the passing of Steve Jobs, Samsung and Google are postponing the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus/Nexus Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich.

“Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.”

Probably due to the passing of Steve Jobs and the timing of the funeral.  Class move.

      all signs point to NO

Now where did you see those signs??? People are confusing Droid Prime with Nexus Prime, one made specifically for verizon and the other a pure google phone like all other nexus phones.

Ok, where are you all hearing this Droid Prime info?  So far, the NEXUS PRIME is a Verizon Exclusive regardless of what they are going to call it. Verizon gave up on getting the GS2 for the NEXUS PRIME.

Post a Link to where you are hearing about this Droid Prime is not the same as Nexus Prime info because I think alot of you are just in denial.

As much as I respect Google and Samsung moving their conference back for the loss of an innovative mind (which he was regardless of what you think of Apple products), the impatient kid side of me really wants to see the Nexus Prime and ICS now :(.

Anyone see on SlashGear that TMO is hosting a Amaze and sgs2 launch event 10/12 at night?
So does this mean these will not be released on 10/10 as we thought?

Totally unnecessary, in my opinion. Sure, his death is sad, but it shouldn’t change the business of other companies. I don’t recall the world stopping for the leaders of large companies that have died in the past.

    • Tweak222

True but I would think Jobs has a little bit more of a celebrity status than alot of other ceos and aside from that some respect towards his death may go a long way in the publics image of samsung and google. The delay builds anticipation and displays good moral standing.

      • Anonymous

It’s definitely a nice gesture. I just don’t think it was necessary, is all.

        • Tortionist

not only what Tweak222 said but also, you do understand that very few CEOs ever do even a quarter of what Steve Jobs did right? Steve Jobs didn’t create the smartphone, tablet, mp3 player, or computer, but they are where they are because of him, no one else. His innovation and push for excellence is why we have awesome electronics today. No one else can lay to that claim. You can’t tell me that that is not legendary or iconic. Steve Jobs is one in a billion. He deserves the credit he gets. So, waiting a week or more on a phone for Jobs is totally necessary. It’s only right.

        • Anonymous

Sorry, but I don’t worship the guy. His leadership skills were excellent, and his creativity was top notch. His death is sad, and he will be missed.

That’s no reason for the world to stop turning.

I don’t worship him either. I am an Android fan, but I do know computer history and Steve jobs is a reason for a lot of our innovation, whether directly or indirectly. So, he deserves the week and the respect.

Could be an extremely classy move.  Not many businesses have the ability to actually care about anything other than the bottom line.

On the other hand, it provides a good excuse to give them more time to, perhaps, “beef-up” the Nexus Prime announcement in some way.

This isn’t wishful thinking, just an observation based on the number of negative comments I’ve seen on the potential for the Prime having ‘only’ 1.2G processor and 5MP camera.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/CeeGee-Borela/100000183782060 CeeGee Borela

    Classy

Samsung(in spite of the patent issues) and Google doesnt want to announce a device that will put the 4S to shame in the week that the creator of the iPhone passes

  • Anonymous

i love this for one simple reason and that is despite apples petty lawsuits, its competitors (samsung and google) show respect for the former head of the company. Stay classy San Diego!

  • Enoel69

It makes sense to hold off the outing for about a week or so. We don’t want the outing date for the Nexus to coincide with Steve jobs funeral. A cynical move will be for ur competitor to have the funeral on the same day..that will sure damping the huge momentum the Nexus will have coming out of the gate. Each deserves a day of its own..i applaud Google and Samsung for their sensitivity.

  • Auser72

I can respect that. The man was a Icon in the field, and was primarily responsible for creating the market(not product) in which they all compete in.

  • Lee

To all of the impatient quacks out there, regardless of your insensitivity, Google and Samsung did the right thing. How many times have we questioned decisions made by big business that often trampled over common decency?

I’m not an apple fan personally, but jobs sweet the bar for the industry. I honestly think if the iPhone wasn’t created the smartphone popularity wouldn’t be like it is today.. I mean let’s be honest apple started the trends like touchscreen phones & tablets.. Whensomeone thinks of a tablet the default term they think is “iPad”… I love HTC & Samsung the most.. yet you have to give apple a lot of credit.. They sell what 2 key models of the iPhone iPhone 3Gs and 4 and it still sells a HUGE IMMENSE amount of phones worldwide… That’s like the HTC G1 still selling millions of units compared to the 3GS iPhone DVD the G2 Comparing to the iPhone 4… I hate admitting it but Steve jobs is a tech AND a marketing GENIUS! So giving the mans body a chance to be buried and the soil to settle is the right thing to do.. The nexus prime isn’t going anywhere.. Maybe they should wait longer to announce new phones.. I mean I bought the LONG ANTICIPATED Sensation.. then Boom! Sensation XL and HTC Amaze, and SGS2… Its impossible to have the flagship phone for more then like a month (not literally, but figuratively speaking)

    • Raul

Windows was first man….everyone thinks iphone was the first smart phone…..well nooo, I had a htc mda back in the 2006(windows phone)
They didnt have a market but u could purchase apps too!!

      • Anonymous

I didn’t say FIRST… I said they “Started the trends” and were responsible for making smartphones & tablets “the thing to have” but If I said “first” you would be correct..

      • Cycles

I had windows phone sx66 many years ago before apple. HTC was was the first with smartphones just didn’t have right marketing.

      • Dpro

Actually no Windows was not first. Apple brought out GUI based personal computers in the late 70′s. The IBM PC came out in the early 80′s and it was DOS based. Windows did not come till late 85. Which was already after Apple introduced the first MacIntosh.

Apple designed the Newton back in the late 90′s and it was actually on the market 99-2000. It was a tablet stylus based computer. It was premature. Apple shelved it. The team behind it left and founded Danger systems( T Mobile sidekick). Microsoft bought Danger. Members of the team then left and started a small company called ANDROID, which Google bought. The rest is history.

So yes Apple had a touch screen style unit before the other guys. Though it was primitive. Was HTC a pioneer in the field as well sure. But those phones were big heavy and ugly oh and you still needed a stylus. My friend had one.
Apple made it attractive and functional.

        • Dpro

Oh and yes there was a Windows phone before the Iphone but it was a piece of junk(IMO) that was stylus based.

    • Anonymous

I agree 100%!! It wasn’t until the Iphone came out that EVERYONE had to have a smart phone. In fact, until the iphone, everyone was looking for smaller and smaller cell phones. What made the iphone so cool was that is had a capacitive touch screen. You could use it without a stylus and people LOVED it! Regardless of your stance on Apple, (Love or hate them), it is impossible to ignore the marketing genius of Steve Jobs. Say what you will about the level of “innovation” in Apple products but they absolutely know how to make people believe they MUST have the new Apple offerings. Whether Google and Samsung did this

      • Anonymous

Thanks. Don’t forget apple is the greatest at keeping their products under wraps without any huge leaks.. Their secrets are like friggin presidential nuke codes…. Their employees pretty much think they’ll go to prison if they leak without permission.. That is a genius marketing strategy.. High anticipation… Apple announcements are like a worldwide event.. It makes petiole froth at the mouth waiting for a new product.. I.mean cmon the FBI raids ppl if they find out that they found/stole a lost apple prototype…

        • Aleale

I totally agree with all the posts! if it wasnt for apple we would still be using motorola razrs. They deserve a lot of credit. RIP Steve, you’ll be missed. Thanks for revolutionizing the industry.

        • Tortionist

Not only that, but if it weren’t for Apple our computers would suck as well. They practically forced Bill Gates and Microsoft to do better with windows through serious competition. Thank you Steve Jobs and Apple.

Yeah, and i’m sure his/her death would have hit the industry hard… The thing is jobs did and that imaginary person didn’t.. Plus the fact that he died at such a relatively young age. Is what makes it more of a tragedy… Its kind of a lesson in health is more important then $.. Im sure Mr. Jobs would agree.. He would of given it all away for 20 more yrs… Maybe even 20 more days

    • Chris

Hate to break your bubble but if Jobs didn’t. Someone else would’ve done it.

  • Trjcasper

I don’t think the delay is about respect. I think they don’t want to share the news space. Better to let Jobs have his moment, then get everybody’s full attention.

    • Anonymous

Yup, but hey this serves multiple purposes, it’s a win-win for them regardless of whether people think they are doing it out of respect, as they will have their undivided attention anyway. I wouldn’t have seen them as cold-hearted if they went ahead with it, because they have plenty of employees who have families and need the company to do what is in it’s best interests to succeed. If the even gets pushed back more than a week or two, however, I will be very skeptical as to whether they’re really just needing to work out problems with the phone.

  • phonegeek

Whoooooa actually being humane and not trying to care solely about money!! Good job to Google and Sammy, many things transcend money and a human life is one. Good show good show.

  • Wilma Flintstone

Good Move Google and Samsung.  I can respect this decision and hope you all (Including Apple) do well.

  • Derrickps3

what a good move. i think all the phone carriers/developers should do this and show respect for that man who lost his life

  • JBLMOBILEG1

While I find it nice to respect Mr. Jobs…. holding back your product because of his passing doesn’t seem like a bright idea. When they finally release it other phones may be faster and more powerful…. although none may have the newest o/s from Google. Maybe they feel the iphone 4S isn’t a big of threat as they thought it would be so they are enhancing their own. Who knows maybe with the bad press that the newest iphone is getting for not being too different from the last… maybe the next Nexus phones weren’t going to have that WOW factor either so they want to push it back.

    • JBLMOBILEG1

To further add to my comment… Jobs health didn’t keep Apple from announcing their product. In fact he was probably already on his death bed. I am sure he wanted his product to be announced before he passed… So while no disrespect to a great human being and innovator… I don’t believe they are holding back because of his death.

  • Aleale

does anyone know if the nexus prime phone while have both radios so i wont have to worry about the acquisition ? Like if it comes with att bands (for the future) and tmobile bands then I am buying it. Thats the only thing that holds me back from buying the device.

Steve Jobs passing is a hugh loss for tech. I’m a pc and android user but great competition help make all tech better. Mr. Jobs did not create the smartphone but he help push it to where it is today. I would like to add that with his vision, apps became so much more important.

no true global business would delay a product launch based on a death of a competitor’s ceo.  ”hey! lets take a loss of many millions of dollars and let people scoop up other competitors phones, because we wanna show some respect.”  thats all crap.
i agree with some of the comments below that they saw how crappy the iphone 4s was and can now take some extra time to work out bugs before presenting their product.  you don’t see apple corp closed, or apple stores shut down for mourning purposes do you? apple is chugging ahead, so should google/nexus.  but it is a brilliant cover in case they have some major bugs to work out with the prime, but if minions choose to believe it, i just laugh.  its like George Bush saying “no new taxes”…right.

This show of sympathy gives them a chance to grab some spotlight. The news will talk about Steve Jobs and a short blurb about a competitor of Jobs/apple showing respect by delaying their product on every major media outlet goes a LONG LONG way in the public’s eyes, minds and most importantly hearts. Now the public may be curious about what this great, humane sympathetic company has to unveil and they will tune in when the event does take place.

They are not gonna delay this for more than a week so its not like they get to make major changes to the product.
