T-Mobile Prepares In-Store Approach To Combat iPhone Release

T-Mobile is ramping up their “attack the iPhone” mode before tomorrows expected iPhone 5 announcement. T-Mobile believes that customers who come into their retail stores will be wiling to have:

”…engage in informative conversations with our customers. These conversations will include many details about T-Mobile Android phones and why our quality 4G nationwide network is a smarter choice for many customers. Use every opportunity to engage the customer, ask lifestyle questions and transition the conversation into ‘Why T-Mobile.’”

I honestly hope that T-Mobile’s entire “combat the iPhone” approach doesn’t rest on conversations with customers inside their retail stores. If so…just hand the company over to AT&T now. This is exactly the kind of poor approach that has caused T-Mobile and specifically the reps in stores hardship. This isn’t how you combat the widespread appeal of the worlds most popular smartphone. Saying “Android is better” isn’t very convincing.

Let’s go back in time for a minute to last November where T-Mobile CEO Philip Humm blamed the lack of the iPhone for poor US sales. Now let’s fast forward to the last 3 weeks which has seen at least three occasions where T-Mobile’s CMO has stated that the iPhone 5 is not arriving on T-Mobile. Some of you have hypothesized that this could mean the iPhone 4S is the expect launch device for T-Mobile given the specific use of the iPhone 5 name in the CMO statements. On that note I ask you? Why release this sheet to sales reps? Why prepare them to combat customer questions surrounding the iPhone if the iPhone is coming? Why combat your own device?

We’ll know all the answers tomorrow but I’m more convinced than ever that tomorrow will be a huge letdown for T-Mobile customers who had high hopes that this would finally be the time for Magenta to get some Apple love.

After 5 years with IOS I recently took advantage of T-Mobile’s 24 hour sale and swung on over to Android and 4G. Simply put, I’m loving the experience. While I definitley will be keeping my MacBook Pro, I have no intentions of switching back to an iPhone and IOS. Android is simply the better OS and T-Mobile is a much better value for me.

does anyone ever stop to think about At&t’s role in Tmo getting the iphone..At&t and Verizon are the biggest carriers in the US and as of now they are the only two with the iphone…with both of them supporting the At7t t-mo merger they are very likely to talk to apple about letting tmo get the iphone..if your two biggest customers are against you selling to another and are willing to pay you more for it ( likely something that is not talked about) then why would you sell to tmo and allow them to regain strength and not need the at&t merger anymore?

years I can almost assuredly say a conversation is all T-Mobile will pull out
    to ‘combat the iPhone’

Nothing Tmo does will help combat the iPhone, unless they offer it to their customers. I may be one of those Tmo customers jumping ship.

    • Tbyrne

Then as the Hip Hop group Kris Kross sang: “JUMP!” Van Halen too. Lol!

  • Richardthegrape

I was considering purchasing an Iphone, just for the experience and see what the hype is about, but not anymore. If Apple doesn’t see the potential T-Mobile has to bring more customers to them, then screw em!(their bullying through patent lawsuits isn’t helping either)

Thank you David (NOT Dave) I agree WHY combat your own phone  IF you were going to get it. I had held hope that perhaps just perhaps that T-Mo would get the iPhone 4S, however this pretty much cements the end that it’s very likely that all major carriers except T mobile will have a iPhone in one model or another.

I guess I’m one of the only people alive that couldn’t give LESS of a sh!t about the stupid iPhone. Hell, the lack of that overhyped, idiot-proof hipster toy is one of the reasons I like T-Mobile so much.

    • http://tmonews.com David

Great, you’ve made your point. There are people that want it, like me. Welcome to the world of choice and preference.

          hahahaha, nice burn.
          Question:
Is the fact that you have this blog holding you back from switching carriers, considering you love the iPhone so much? Or have you already secretly switched?

        • http://tmonews.com David

Ah but I use the iPhone unlocked on T-Mobile. In some respects that’s the best of both worlds even with EDGE speeds. I’m around Wi-Fi enough that it doesn’t bother and when I’m out, well I try and keep phone usage to a minimum anyway.

        • Anonymous

Thanks for giving me some perspective, I have always been curious. And while I admittedly on some occasions find those “icrap” or “isheep” comments somewhat comical, I definitely agree with you. Like many others have said, I’m not crazy coo coo for having an iPhone (I’m perfectly content with Android), but I would love for T-Mobile to have the iPhone

  • JBLMOBILEG1

While I must admit the iphone revolutionized the smart phone and Apple does make a quality built product.. I feel it’s more of a fashion statement now adays. For me Android is the better choice because it offers a lot more including a good selection of phones to run the o/s on. These of course are my opinions. But honestly if you want to spend more on accessories etc. or want to have a phone that everyone else wants or has then the iphone may be for you. Some may say the Android phones are rip offs of the iphone…. while that may have some truth to it… from my understanding the next iphone is copying Android in many ways. Both can be good depending on what you want and how you’ll be using it. Do you want flash, removable memory and battery? Then Android is for you. Or would you rather be able to sync nicely with your itunes have almost ANY accessory you could dream of but pay for the premium for it? Welcome to Apple. When it truly comes down to it the choice is yours.

I am very disappointed that it seems there will be no T-Mobile iPhone. This January will mark 15 years with T-Mobile, from Omnipoint days, and it will be my last.

After, a year with Android and just five months with iOS on my iPad2, there is no doubt hat Andoind is an inferior product to iOS.

After 2 years with android and trying a iphon4 for 3 months, Ill be putting the iphone4 on craigslist and using the money to get a galaxy s2.

      Ha haa…
Samsung galaxy s2 is far more superior to iphone 4 and equally good compared to iphone 5 also. I have tried s2 and its brilliant phone.
      Talking about Android vs iOS.
iOS5 which will be released next month still wont have all the features andriod has. Android is far more user friendly than iOS. A simple wifi or bluetooth ON/OFF feature you have to go thru so many options in iOS, while in Android its right there on home screen. Similarly, direct calling, weather, facebook, news, twitter and list goes on. These are just the few ones apart from notifications which will be introduced in iOS5 after sooooo many years in apple.

I got it Steve Jobs was so mad that T-mobile released the first android phone that he would make sure they would never get an iphone and would eventually kill the company. Genius

On a business standpoint wouldn’t it be wise to have the iPhone as another choice in tmobiles great phone lineup?

  • Anonymous

All I know is that the reps at the T-Mobile store doesn’t need to explain why Android is better than the iPhone or etc… because some/most people wouldn’t even bother stepping into a T-Mobile store asking why they don’t have the iPhone when they can go to the other three carriers that have the iPhone.

I want the iPhone and I’m going port three of my lines out.

  • J. Williams

The only thing I applaud apple on is their marketing.  They have really got people fooled into thinking they have a winner.  the iphone is nice, but as stated by many others here…there are several other phones that are better than the iphone.

    • IT Guy

I’ve said many times that Apple does a great job not just of marketing, but of putting together a device that people want.

Apple doesn’t target the bleeding edge techie crowd for their devices. They’re not aiming for the people who are trying to squeeze every byte out of the size of the operating system software, or the people who upgrade their phones 3x a year because a new one with a processor thats .1ghz faster is out.

Instead, they look for what most people want from a phone, make it do those things really well, and wrap it up in a nice, easy to use package.

So should T-Mobile be illegal to operate because they don’t have iphone?
    NO!

  • Sad Tmo Rep

not having the iphone hurts business. Actually having to have the conversation on why we dont have the iphone and how android is better hurts business. I have come to the conclusion that DT doesn’t want to give in to apples terms in regards to tmobile because they want out and are willing to tank the business to get rid of it. Will people get up and leave at a huge rate? no but to not offer as many choices as possibly especially when that choice is the best selling single smart phone in the US is not good business sense.

  • http://www.unscripted360.com Deacon

what they should do instead of saying that they don’t have the iPhone is tell them that “the iPhone 5 will work with TMO by buying this particular SIM right here”.  let’s face it .. millions of iPhones are already on TMO’s network.

just tell them hey go buy it, and use it on our network so that at least they’re getting something in the data plans lol

still a let down for people who want the device on TMO.  i’m not an iPhone fan but i know millions are and millions more that have TMO service are.

  • TmoEmp1

I am not an Iphone fan. I really do not like apple products, and have used several, from ipad, ipod, to macs… So I see a lot of resons to go away from apple and iphone.. But.. As a T-mobile employee, I can honestly say that customers have cancelled service and paid the ETF to go to AT&T and Verizon to get Iphones. I had a customer, who was given a gift of an IOphone 4, and wasn’t happy with the service on T-mo, so She cancelled and went to AT&T.

I hate telling customers we do not carry the phopne, customers act like we are crippled for not having it.
Worse are the customers who read the blogs and actully come to my store, saying they know we are getting iphone, and we are lying to them when we say we are not.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ONDU3ICZY5ZMA2LNECW66CVPIM All About Me

Maybe I’ll go in and ask if they’d like to stick my G2X where the sun don’t shine…tear up my contract and ETF along with it. I don’t want an exchange for the G2X, I don’t want their Sensation or any other TMO phone in the lineup. They screwed me/us with this crappy phone, and I’m leavin’ for the land of Apple.

    • Anonymous

If you bought a G2X, you will pretty much buy anything.  Enjoy the iphone.

      • Wilma Flintstone

Actually the newer models of the G2x are pretty solid devices and have the flaws of the early G2x’s fixed.  Leo Laporte from Twit has and LOVES his newer model G2x and you can’t possibly say HE’s not a Tech Guy.

    • Tbyrne

Well then go! Tell Ivan or Randall you’ll give them all your money to have this ONE device. Talk about shortsightedness and disloyalty. Sad. Just sad.

When customers walk in to the store it doesn’t matter is we give them a full blown speech on why the android platform might be better.. If the customer wants an iphone all they hear from us is no we don’t carry the iphone every other word is blah blah blah to them..

    • iPhone Killer

True, but the iPhone still sux!

      • Mopar6464

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AWWIKW6MNPUHOC4OVSHWUDWAHM Fabio

Well, this definitely proves that T-Mobile is NOT getting ANY version of the iPhone. And this idea of engaging in a conversation with the customer is not the way to go. I personally just find that annoying, I think the better way to convince a customer is to blind them with prices. Especially in this economy people want to save the most they can. That’s an advantage to T-Mobile and it’s a way to combat its high priced competitors. An Android device CAN and has very much of the same functions as an iPhone. That’s your cue T-Mobile USA.

  • Anonymous

And here is where Tmo shows us yet another epic fail. Quit trying to convince the unwitting consumer that your limitless android offerings are somehow better than the next Iphone. Phillip Humm, the message is getting old and boring…let the consumer decide whats best for them, and before you android fanboys piss in my cornflakes…get OFF MY LAWN! I still own the original G1 and have been holding out the slightest hope that Tmo might just get the Iphone…and yet one more time i’m dissapointed.

  • Pablo1215

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA this sounds exactly like something tmobile and corporate tmobile especially would do.  They take away every weapon or tool for their call center and sales reps to do well but expect more of them at the same time.  Good luck with that approach how’s that been doing for you the last few years?  Oh yeah you are selling out to att.

So if WSJ is correct Sprint will get the Iphone 5 exclusive until next year, this would mean that Verizon, AT&T, nor T-Mobile will be getting it. If you notice the above note says Iphone 5. T-Mobile had never mentioned the Iphone 4S. Why not? Would this suggest that the IP4S come to magenta? Sometimes it’s not what they have said, but what they have not said.
