Samsung Exynos Still A No Go For T-Mobile Bound Galaxy S II?

The question as to which processor Samsung and T-Mobile have chosen for the Galaxy S II has been picking at the back of our minds for quite some time now. The decision not to showcase the device at the recent Samsung event lent further credence to the rumor that Samsung and T-Mobile had opted for a processor other than the Exynos.

Well now a Samsung marketing manager has helped further the rumor that the T-Mobile version will be different. Philip Berne, Samsung’s marketing manager explains in a TechnoBuffalo video that the T-Mobile version will use a “different” 1.2GHz dual-core CPU. While there is no word from T-Mobile or Samsung as what “different means, plenty of speculation surrounds the Snapdragon 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm APQ860 processor. The Qualcomm chipset supports T-Mobile’s efforts to provide HSPA+ speeds of 42Mbps inside the Galaxy S II model while the Exynos chipset would limit the device to half those speeds. I’m happy with HSPA+ 42Mbps, are you?

Interesting. will it be harder to update since processor is different or does it make a difference?

    • Processor type has never stopped Samsung from not updating a device, don’t see why that would change now. ;)

the updates will be slower than usual, because of the different processor.

  • If it has the Qualcomm shipset, doesn’t that make it easier to port HTC Sense? That would be cool, I mean, I don’t care for Sense, even though I have a Sensation.. but still.

  • I just want a WP7 version of this phone regardless of processor.

    • i’m with you on that James.

No matter what WP7 Mango phone you buy, the only processor you’re going to get is a MSM8X55 Snapdragon.  That’s the single-core version of the processor that everyone here thinks will be underwhelming in the T-Mobile GSII.  It debuted in the US with the MT4G last November.

        • Then if anything LabattZ, you’re doing TMO a favor. They’re not taking a hit on subsidizing a handset for you and you’re still paying for service from them.

And when you say EPIC FAILURE, TMO, where did they exactly fail?

        • Anonymous

Sure, I’m still paying the MRC and they haven’t had to subsidize anything; but there’s a greater chance of a non-contracted account leaving for another carrier than not.  That’s not the subject here.

re: “epic failure” … IMO, increased clock speed doesn’t make up for a better GPU.  Once again, customizing the hardware of a handset to meet their particular “needs” or desires.  They pooched the first SGS with their special version(s) and are now following suit and pooching the 2nd SGS with their special version. Carrier customization (aside from Radios, duh) of handset hardware is a real pain in the ass, IMO.  Who else knows what they changed … GPS chip?

The processor matters, look at the sensation, slight lag here and there.  The SII EX processor, no lag whatsoever.  No one is getting 42mbps or even 21 mbps, should have left the Sammys chip in it.  Putting a older chip set is just lame. The 1.5 dual core phones HTC is bringning in the future, I’m sure EX will easily be at the same clock speed and work circles around the qualcomm one.

  • Auser72

If I can get an average of 16-24mbps, and decent everyday performance (no lag). I would consider it a fair trade off.

  • give it a chance guys. yes i know snapdragon is in the Sensation and its lags from time to time, but thats only because of sense 3.0….the skin itself is slow and now exactly “complete” so if this galaxy s2 uses snapdragon there might be a chance that its just as fast as the other Galaxy S2 models. Wait for someone to do a hands-on video and im sure it wont be laggy

    • TMOTECH

I have never had a bad experience with my sensation and I am a Field Tech that uses his phone all day with very intensive apps running. So IDK what your talking about.

  • Bb6h22lude4

you guys remember the hercules from telus pic that had a quadrant score of 3359? it’s possible samsung tweaked the apq8060 and made it so that both cores are running together at the same time instead of it only using the other core when it needs it.

    • Anonymous

They must have done something to it to get it up there.  Correct me if I’m wrong but we only have the HP touchpad using that chip and I don’t know of any benchmarks of it to shine some light on this dragged out mystery.

    It’s a ph*** in A BOX!!

  • There is something wrong with this article. The APQ8060 is for devices that do not require cellular connection. So it can’t be that processor.

    • Anonymous

      It has a separate modem.

      • Wouldn’t that be hell on the battery life? I mean the point of combining to two is to save space and keep power consumption down.

    • Anonymous

“Qualcomm’s MDM8220 dual-carrier HSPA+ solution, based on the 3GPP Release 8 standard, provides peak downlink data rates of up to 42 megabits per second (Mbps)”

4th paragraph up from the bottom.

      http://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2009/11/12/qualcomm-now-sampling-industry-s-first-dual-carrier-hspa-and-multi-mode-3gl

      • But they are saying it will be the APQ8060. It’s a AP-Only chipset made for devices that don’t need cellular data. So why would they use that for a cell phone? It makes no sense what so ever. This information has to be wrong. Even if they changed the clock speed to 1.5GHz it doesn’t change that this chipset can not access any type of cellular network.

        • Anonymous

The MDM8220 is the radio. The APQ8060 is the cpu.

    • Yyy

or this could be the 1.5ghz version ?

      • The APQ8060 can run at 1.5GHz. But it doesn’t change that it can not be used to access a cellular network. That chipset is make specifically for devices that do not need you receive cellular signal. So there is no way it would be the chipset in the phone.

    • Yyy

or this could be the 1.5ghz version ?

Could it possibly have a tegra 2 chip?

Who really gets 42Mbps anyhow? I live in Vegas, we were one of the first turn ups for 4G coverage because of CES. I drove by their towers to see what speeds I’d get.

I have an SGS4G, and I’ve never hit 21mbps…. 10up/3down at the highest. So in reality, I’d prefer the Exynos+GPU over the processor that supports 42mbps.

Have you seen the benches on the Exynos+GPU??? It’s INSANE! Super disappointed with TMO on this decision.

    • TMOTECH

If the Phone has 42 + capabilities it will get more than 21. We are averaging 30 on +42 devices  during nighttime testing. Of course this would go down during the day but you get my point.

      • Anonymous

Yes, quite true. Network traffic, congestion etc. all play into it. I’m certainly happy with my speeds the phone never lags. Also, its good to market the capabilities because TMO is leading in that area right now. Just wish they’d left the Exynos+GPU combo in there.

I’ll reserve judgement though till we see the combo that comes in the phone. Still gonna get it regardless.

      • BigMixxx

Completely agree there.  I have the G2x and I too live in vegas and I
get on Average 6 to 7 meg down during peak times, with a very low ping.
        (<– big key here)

IMO, giving up potential speed of device (because we don't know) for speed of network has been done before
(Droid bionic is a prime example, although the device was supposed to
have nvidia parts, it has TI for LTE, Tegra is faster)…

i think its stupid as hell to change the processor in this badboy, i mean shit that processor is already old and will more then likely not perform up to par with the exynos which = TMOBILE HAVING A ANOTHER SHITTY LAGGY PHONE!!! yay for nothing

  • scuzzbag87

im pisssed no exynos. this better have one of those new S4 snapdragon chips to make up for it

  • u m

I own both SG2 and HTC Sensation (only because I simply love technology). For some reason, people think they will never experience any lag at all…..ever! From Android, IPhone, Blackberry, Palm and Windows, I have owned them all at one time or another and have experienced lag and freezes. We can dispute what processors do what better then the other, but at the end of the day, NO SMARTPHONE IS COMPLETELY LAG FREE! Question is, how much lag is too much to tolerate.

    • Auser72

I completely agree with you on the unrealistic idea of never having lag on a smartphone. Most people are referring to lag in everyday use, not glitch related lag. As far as the HTC Sensation, the overwhelming disappoint stems from mediocre performance ln regards to it’s specs. It’s lags in comparison to other dual core devices.

      • u m

  • Nancyh23

Man does it feel good being on at&t have u guys heard att announced a samsung galaxy s2 with wp7 and yes an exynos processor. Also we get the regular s2 with an exynos processor. I know for a FACT a lot of people will start talking shyyt to me and I know why because they jealous don’t deny it u guys are. My boyfriend has t-mobile he was gonna get the t-mobile version of the s2 since we both live in good t-mobile and att coverage areas. But not anymore he will be cancelling T-Mobile and will be joining me in my att plan. I admit T-Mobile coverage is not bad at all over here in LA. BUT SERIOUSLY how does it feel for u tmo customers to always get screwed over wit awesome watered down phones? O I know it freaking sukz that’s why my boyfriend is dumping t-mobile cuz they messed up an awesome phone.. my bf is not leaving cuz of bad coverage he’s leaving them cuz of there crappy phone selection ..

    • TMO > ATT

you realize the reason that they aren’t doing the exynos processor is so the phone will do 42mbps right. meaning it will be faster than the AT&T version?

      • Megancockslut11

True that But then again half of T-Mobiles network is still edge lolz. Me being a t-mobile customer is angry that evrrytime I get on the i5 and go out of LA I fall back to edge or gprs on my g2x while my friend on att still has an h+ icon on her infuse. And that’s when atts 3G becomes faster than t-mobiles edge. Yes on major city’s I always have 3g/4g on t-mobile and I get much faster speeds than my friends on Att even tho they have h+ icon. But then again the advantage att has is they still have 3G coverage outside of major citys and highways while t-mobile only provides at best an edge signal. So yea dnt make fun of att cuz there network may be slower than t-mobiles but heck they have more 3G coverage than T-Mobile. And u gotta admit in those places T-Mobile only gets edge and att 3G atts 3G is much faster and ur still able to use voice and data at the same time.. which is almost out of every big city..

        • Shakirafan23

I agree with u even tho I don’t like ur screen name xD. I would rather have more 3G coverage on att even tho if its a lil slower than have crappy dial up speed edge on t-mobile when I go out of the city. Maybe I will switch to att soon and dump t-mobile lol. Btw atts hspa+ is not that bad I seen my friend hit 12 mbps on her infuse. Which if u ask me that’s not bad at all. Still not as fast as what I gotten on my g2x on t-mobile da most I gotten is 14 mbps. But yea like megan said only advantage is att has way better 3G coverage outside major citys. People on att are still able to get 4-7 even 12 mbps like my frend on her infuse outside major citys while us people on t-mobile get 768 kbps on crappy edge lol I kno cuz it has happened to me a lot.

People on att are still able to get 4-7 even 12 mbps like my frend on her infuse outside major citys while us people on t-mobile get 768 kbps on crappy edge lol I kno cuz it has happened to me a lot.

im in the same boat down here in atl

Judging by the “lolz” and other infantile words you chose to use in your post I’m not quite sure why I’m even bothering responding to you but I have both ATT and T-Mo and I’m pretty sure I travel a lot more than you do, ATTs connection is nothing to write home about, both voice and data. Sure there are times I get service with ATT while I don’t with TMo, like say underground while waiting on a train at Grand Central Terminal. For the most part however my TMo phones destroys my iPhone as far as call quality and data speeds. I routinely have people ask me to call them back when I’m on my ATT phone. So the whole “people are jealous” garbage is completely bs. This phone is not watered down at all, as a matter of fact when have tmo phones been watered down? Who has a phone like the Sensation? If anything ATT got the shaft having a smaller screen and a slower network connection. You haven’t even used a GS2 to bash or laud either of the chipsets. Its pretty obvious you dont know what you’re talking about.

Funny your precious At&t needs T-Mobile to stay relevant

      • YourMOM

You T-Mobile folks live in fantasy land I tell. you.  Nothing about T-Mobile’s network destroy’s anyone’s other than maybe Metro PCS’s lame ass network.

You guys either live in denial or some other dimension claiming everyone else’s network sucks but your own.

Reality check:  T-Mobile provides more coverage holes nationwide than any other 3 national providers.  T-Mobile’s network (from a geographic standpoint) is mostly GPRS and EDGE even as we are getting close to 2012.  T-Mobile is still providing T1 (1.5 Mbps) backhaul to cell sites that they claim are 42 Mbps capable meaning everyone has to share that 1.5 Mbps connection and will never ever see speeds over 1 Mbps at any given time.

        • Nancyh23

Finally someone that makes sense! Most people on here are in denial. I mean cmon its been proven t-mobile has the smallest coverage when compared to at&t, verizon, att look it up if u don’t believe me for those still in denial. Yes t-mobile probably works Better than att I don’t kno I have Verizon and would never ever switch to t-mobile. But that att has more coverage its a fact u must be in denial to not accept it. Like for example both my friends have t-mobile and another one has att. We took a road trip to Virginia and some parts of Virginia out in the woods t-mobile would roam on att that’s an example of how att has better nationwide coverage. Also in some parts of Tennessee we went to same thing t-mobile roamed on att. So yes your mom I agree with u most people on here are on denial! They just can’t face the fact that there precious cheap t-mobile doesn’t have a lot of coverage.

Sounds like ur bf should grow a pair and do what he wants instead of letting u tell him what to do….

Tmobile has more and continually progresses with 3g and 4g phones with better tech than the other carriers. FACT.

The reason is because the other carriers need to hold back progresssion of all phone tech cause they need to push the iphone all the time, if they offered as many android devices as tmobile their customers would have more choices that may impact iphone sales or show customers that android devices are actually superior to iphone.

Check your facts b4 u start talkin…..ur just mad cause ur bf said Carly was hot hahhahha…don’t worry she don’t want ur bf baby cause he don’t have a pair….

I’m confused, I know that there would never be any attractiove female replying to a tread like this. it leads me to believe that this is either some kid who thought it would make people question who they are less or something like that. look i can do it to, im a doctor and i say that the only perscription to your medicine is to dump at&shity, BTW why would they need to buy tmobile in the first place? oh yea its because they cant figure out how to program a gsm network without another company or the governments aid. enjoy your unimplimented lte and 7 meg 4g hspa+.

Strange that samsung doesn’t have a chip of its own that supports 42mbps…..someone correct me if I’m wrong, but arent the galaxy s 4g, sidekick and exhibit the only tmo smartphones that supports 21mbps…..while all others are 14mbps devices?

Now hold up, so what is this crap on Samsung’s website talking about a c210 processor that’s supposed to be an “americanized” version of the Exynos? (I googled it and that’s what it said the c210 was) that’s supposed to be in all three? I understand that everything is hearsay right now, but why change what works? 42mbps hspa+ is really worth removing exynos for a Qualcomm chip?

    • J-Hop2o6

Oh yea… Guess we gotta wait until some concrete conformation.. but maybe that was a typo on Samsung part? because they say the Exynos maxes out at 21mbps.. So if the Tmo version really maxes out at 42mbps, then it can’t be Exynos.

Why the hell do you need 42 mbps in your damned phone? Unless you use it as a hotspot who needs that kind of speed?

    • Meagan

If your mobile has 42mbps capability, and not plugged in, I bet the battery life will suffer and many peeps will be dumbfounded that expected 8 hour battery life.

      • Kevinmarchibald

Yeah, I’m betting HSPA+ 42 battery life will be closer to Verizon LTE battery life. Anandtech did a preview of the Bionic LTE that has a bigger battery, and the battery life is just about last in the two tests, along with the other LTE phones. I’d rather have the Exynos’s snappy UI/browser performance and HSPA+ 21. HSPA+ 21 seems to perform better on average than Sprint’s WiMax, so the T-Mobile SGS2 would likely be more attractive than the Sprint SGS2. For instance, one preview of the Sprint SGS2 in NYC had downloads of ~4.25 Mbps and uploads of ~1.5 Mbps. T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 21 phones average about 7 Mbps (Sidekick 4G performs closer to 5 Mbps). If I was T-Mobile I would have waited for the Nexus Prime to showcase HSPA+ 42, especially if ICS has improved power management. But T-Mobile’s desperate to maintain company value for the AT&T deal, so thinks they need HSPA+ 42 now as an extra hook to lock people into contracts, especially it doesn’t get the iPhone.

    • Have you ever used a Verizon LTE phone? HSPA+ 42 has similar download speeds. It makes web browsing, downloading apps, etc. much faster.

      • Stan Wilder

really?  are you kidding me?  my vibrant browses the web as fast or faster than most peoples home pcs.  I don;’t even have the vibrant 4g, just the orignal.  I get 4 to 6mbps with this and it is fast.  Most apps download in less than 10 seconds.  I would rather have a faster processor in my phone than a super fast data connection that will just get throttled anyhow.  It’s people like you that encourage the execs to make these stupid decisions.  “Hey, we can rehash the same phone, with “faster” data connection!”   It’s like if computer companys sold you on the idea that your pentium 3 computer is fast enough, you just need a faster internet connection, we’ll give you cable instead of dsl!  rather than improving the platform.
Unless you are using bittorrent or other p2p and your connection wont be throttled, there is no logical reason to keep on pounding more internet speed into these phones other than it must be more profitable than makeing the hardware better,

  • Anonymous

Hell no I’m not happy. We will never see 42 Mbps its just theorical. I rather have the exynos processor and notice the smooth experience on a daily basis. Very bad decision from tmobile.

Nice phone and excellent UI(Sense 3.0), but it doesn’t have the speed and fluidity I expected from a dual core processor. I actually like the phone and my wife loves it, but you have to remember that you are on a blog full of tech heads that scrutinize things well beyond the average consumer.

  • Frigadroid

Extra speed really isn’t important for me. My vibrant has yet to reach 6Mbps and can get the job done well enough. My complaint as usual is about the coverage and throttling. Who needs a super sonic phone when its being throttled or out of range on edge? I’m not upset about the change that’s what you come to expect from tmobil. Just another executive decision that keeps them where they are, instead of growing by expanding coverage and keeping it real unlimited.

  • rob

I gotta agree with people saying speed isn’t everything.  We are moving into the mobile data age but I can deal with 14mb download if they can get their 4g network to work all the time.  I’m not talking about network congestion or terrain affecting the signal.  I mean the stupid complete signal drops that happen daily with 4g devices.  Why some are affected while others aren’t make it harder to pin point the problem. I’ll take the phone with a better processor and gpu abilities over one with faster network speeds because of this issue.  Their own tech department can’t say the problem won’t carry over if I were to switch to a completely different phone.  I’m royally pissed to be dealing with this problem with my MT4G and it would put me over the edge to pay for a phone and service that continues to experience this problem.

I can’t even pull 1 Mbps down and I’m in an area where T-Mobile boasts its 4G HSPA + 42 Mbps network.  T-Mobile’s 42 Mbps network is more about marketing and less about substance because they haven’t and won’t provide adequate backhaul to support multiple users at real life high speeds.

That said I would be perfectly happy with a chipset that only supports 21 Mbps or even 14 Mbps download speeds being we can’t get anything real fast anyways and we’ll get a better CPU to boot.

Face it:  T-Mobile went cheap on us again.

    • Kevinmarchibald

Good point about the backhaul. Also, I remember reading a European study about the impact of mobile TV streaming on 3G UMTS towers. At the time, mobile streaming was just a tick mark European customers liked to see when they did phone comparisons, but very few of them actually actually used it. So they paid these testers to use mobile streaming for the study. The researchers found that it only took like 7-8 users streaming on the same tower to saturate it. That’s why I wasn’t surprised by AT&T customers complaining about network performance after the iPhone explosion, with iPhone users often into multimedia and streaming. Not sure if tower capacity has increased as T-Mobile went from WCDMA to each of the HSPA+ protocols to avoid similar issues. But you’re right; the bottleneck could still be the backhaul.

Ballz… I will be passing on this phone now, I was excited at fist.. but Tmobile went cheap ass and made a dumb decision.. Here’s to hoping they get suck with a lot of these phones in storage becuase not as many people want them .. (4.5 is pretty big for your average consumer, even tho most of em will have NO clue its not using a GOOD processor like the regular SGS 2’s…

  • OKDave

What a crappy decision. We’ve been waiting eight freaking months for this phone, and T-Mobile craps all over us with a crock CPU. How frustrating.

  • The Architect(of the Matrix)

I’m left scratching my head.. Imho Tmobile should have gone with the exynos chip for the sgs2 and used the snapdragon chip for the amaze 4g..

While the avg consumer probably won’t notice or mind.. The more tech savvy users will feel snubbed..

Most people followed and waited for this device because of the exynos chip with samoled + as an added incentive.. The same way most people followed and waited for the vibrant because of the hummingbird chip with samoled as an added incentive..

if both devices will use the snapdragon chip, and be 42mbps capable, I think I’ll opt for the amaze.. Shame too because samoled + is beautiful and I was open to trying tw4.. End rant

  • Calvin

Is the snapdragon really as bad as everyone is saying? Is it really going to make that big of a difference?

    • Cct Pitts01

The snapdragon processors from videos online shows the Snapdragon processor in the EVO 3D and Sensation easily are out performed by the Exynos hands down.

      • Calvin

Someone mentioned it earlier but would touch wiz have anything to do with the poor performance?

    • Phillip Schroder

No, snapdragon isn’t that bad, it’s the kernel that’s supplied for it. At least that’s the issue with the HTC snapdragon devices. Solution= root and flash a custom kernel and ROM. My Sensation 4G is about 20% faster than a stock SGSII.

im getting this phone im almost certain this phone will perform extremely well

  • ScroatFan

People seem suprised that tmo is going the cheap easy route. They always go the cheap easy route. They always short change customers on phone quality and selection. This is why they constantly lose customers even thoughthey have the best value rate plans and the best coverage for the price. att merger will fail and then tmo will be out of business.the management a tmo is a disgrace and the reason the company is in trouble.

  • Karlc

This phone will be awesome…period. It’ll be big, smooth, and fast! “you can’t please ALL the people ALL the time”. the executive decision is to build for the masses, and not just for YOU!

  • Anonymous

Wait, was that an attempt to justify the Exynos exclusion with “hey, we get 42Mbps instead of 21” or just a poor attempt to look on the bright side?

SGS II is not a SGS II with a different chip, it’s an entirely different phone. If there is a Tegra 2 version coming to T-Mobile then it’s basically a G2X with an AMOLED display.

Wow, i thought  we caught a bad break with the SGS but it only got worse now.

The “real” SGS2 spanked all other phones with the Exynos, replacing the Exynos is replacing the SGS2 with a phone that the SGS2 spanked yet still calling it SGS2.

If they put a Tegra 2 inside, someone should write a book about T-Mobile’s phone fails since 2008, plenty of material.

Why buy this SGS 1.5 over Sensation???

    • Realcool2000

What’s wrong with tegra 2 processor? Just wondering….

      • Anonymous

There is nothing wrong with Tegra 2 or the Qualcomm APQ8060 for that matter.

The point is that T-Mobile’s version is not a SGS2, it’s a worse phone phone without the Exynos since that chip spanked others, including the one that will be in T-Mobile’s version.

What are you crying about? You are basing your opinion here on quadrant benchmark test’s, are you kidding me? That bullshit app is’t even optimized for Dual Core Processors!!! Samsung’s Exynos is good but we have not seen a SGS2 with a 1.5 Ghz Qualcomm with all of Samsung’s mods to ANdroid 2.3.4 yet so chill and quit spreading  stupid rumors. Why are you hating on Tegra 2? I love this Processor in my Galaxy Tab 10.1.

        • Anonymous

First of all, no one is crying. Second, quadrant, or any other benchmark on it’s own means nothing but along with other tests and benchmarks, it paints a pretty accurate picture.

The replacement CPU is the same as in the Sensation, inferior to Exynos but that’s only half the story. The Exynos GPU is light years ahead compared to the T-mobile version. That GPU spanked everything else except the ipad 2. Exynos is the only chip powerful enough to keep animating flash content while scrolling around.

But it’s ultimately impact in real usage that matters, and the Exynos spanked the Sensation in real usage comparisons.

        • I think everyone is mad because people have been waiting a long time for this when they could have just bought the Sensation. But you are right about people only caring about benchmark scores, the Sensation is a really great phone, very fast and smooth.

I just think it should not be called a Galaxy S II, because it is not a Galaxy S II. It is not a bad phone, it is just not what they are calling it.

  • Meagan

Wow, Samsung wants to build the BEST mobile, and tmobile says tmobile customers aren’t worth the BEST, But tmobile customers will buy, second best.

  • Plankton

Really…you are happy…r u buying one or sticking with your iphone. Hoping among hopes that tmo gets the iphone 5.

If sprint is smart they will offer the $175 dollar cancellation rebate toward the iphe 5 and the cubbords will be bare.

    ABC you later

ARR! The crabby patty will be mine!

http://www.phonedog.com/2011/09/13/t-mobile-galaxy-s-ii-features-a-1-5ghz-dual-core-qualcomm-apq8060-processor-says-samsung/ Hmm, still hoping rumors are wrong. Always possible, too, that Samsung optimized the firmware, and didn’t just overclock it.

    BYE!! BYE!! TMO..
