(Updated) Will T-Mobile Be The Only Big Four Carrier Without The iPhone?

Update: Apple fan site MacTrast has just posted their own rumored information regarding the arrival of the iPhone 5 on T-Mobile according to their own source. So there you go, maybe it will happen after all.

Further elaborating on the matter, the informant suggested that T-Mobile USA expects the iPhone 5 to launch sometime in early to mid October, whichcorresponds nicely with current speculation. He also expects the iPhone 5 to make a significant financial difference to T-Mobile. Our source was quoted as saying the following.

While the iPhone is a love it or hate it device the rumor mill went into a short tizzy yesterday after the Wall Street Journal reported that Sprint would be among the iPhone 5 launch partners along with AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile has been conspicuously absent from recent rumors listing iPhone 5 launch partners and we have to wonder why. Now before the Android fanboys get themselves all worked up into a frenzy we must remember that there are currently over one million unlocked iPhone’s currently being served on the T-Mobile network. Clearly there is demand for the device and we imagine (reasonably so we believe) that a T-Mobile iPhone that actually works on 3G would be in hot demand.

Now we understand the argument all too well that Apple may not want to supply an iPhone for T-Mobile given that they may not be around this time next year. However, given that it has long been rumored that Apple has considered a pentaband iPhone it would entirely possible and feasible for Apple to provide this and thereby allowing current iPhone owners to make a jump to AT&T with the same device if that became necessary in the next few years.

The bottom line is that T-Mobile shouldn’t be left out of the iPhone game no matter what the company’s future looks like. There is demand and and marketshare to be gained by Apple from a T-Mobile iPhone and we hope come September, October, December or whenever the iPhone 5 is finally launched that T-Mobile is among those who will see their names behind Steve Jobs during the keynote. Even if the iPhone is your sworn enemy T-Mobile customers deserve to have all the same choices their competitors have.

Sometimes I have to walk away from the keyboard. Sometimes I just shrug and move on, other times I vent on Twitter. Mostly I just laugh because 90% of the comments are just people who have on idea or understanding of the rhyme or reason as to why stuff is posted. There is a logic pattern to it and we post stuff when its relevant. If someone wants to claim we post it every six months, that’s because we deem it relevant. If the Sprint story hadn’t happened yesterday, I never would have posted this. It’s very simple. I see what posts are popular so I know what stories to keep covering that drives traffic but more importantly, what people are interested in. Even if the Android crowd tries to takeover T-Mobile iPhone posts, there are still tens of thousands of readers who read these articles caring about it.

Is T-mobile still considered one of the big 4 when its pretty much sold to att?

  • Tortionist

I know what you mean. I was never impressed by the iphone, but all that you just said is true. Tmobile might not have been sold had the they picked up the iphone, especially one running HSPA. It’s too late, but it will help tmobile and Apple in sales. I played with the iphone 3gs and 4, nothing impressive about them, maybe the iphone 5 will be different. Steve Jobs needs to bring in customization possibilities. That would make a world of difference to me and quite a few other people. Here’s to hoping.

  • JG01

You kow ATT placed those ads to reduce the resistance against the merger. The more people that sees the ads will give up on the fight thinking that it is a done deal and it is no point fighting. That is exactly what they want you to think !  Don’t give up so easy !  keep up the fight !

On the iPhone topic, it would be in Apple’s benefit to have every carrier selling the iPhone as there is a lot more competition. To have every carrier sell the phone , will give them a bigger market share.

If T-Mobile DOES get the iPhone 5, I MAY…..consider buying it. I’m a fan of my Android, but what’s wrong with trying something new for a change? I’ll just be pissed off if I can’t use my own ringtones and be forced to pay for them.

    • Anonymous

You have to use iTunes to sync your own ringtones to the iPhone there’s a ringtone tab on the left panel when you open iTunes.

Great post David, and spot on.  I think there is still a chance the merger will be stopped.  Even if it isn’t there is pretty good reason to believe that a condition of the merger would be the requirement that AT&T allow T-mobile to run as a separate business.  I can’t imagine why the iPhone would not come to T-mobile, unless AT&T made some back door deal to stop it (a dwindling T-mobile is in their favor because the merger would have an impact on fewer people).  I guess come October we will see.  Right now we will get the joy of reading all the android fanboys replies screaming bloody murder about your post.  That should hold us over until October :-)

I don’t understand all the hate apple is getting. You fanboys are ridiculous. What did apple ever do to you? I have a g2 and I’ve had android since the G1. I love android. But all the hate is stupid..I love webOS IOS and android so don’t think I’m taking sides. Apple could really help tmobile. If apple bring the iphone to tmobile with at&t bands so we won’t get left in the dark I’m getting it.

i think the hate is coming from the fact that most iPhone users do not know how to use them, the reason they want one is because everyone else has one. ppl who has one tend to be a bit cocky and show off cuz they think they have the best phone in the world. but seriously what do they do with it? Simply just talk and text without even knowing there is a front facing camera……that’s the messed up part…

        That’s not just iPhone users.

I’d bet that 90% of smartphone users don’t use their phone for everything it can do, and who says they need to? Get a phone you like that works for what you want it to do.

What really cracks me up is people who cry that iPhone users are sheep, yet they go sspend $500 every other month when the latest and greatest android device with a screen .1″ bigger than the last.

        • Polo1322

        • Tortionist

While I do agree with almost all of what you’re saying( you do have valid points). What’s wrong with smartphone users not using their phone to its full potential? Most computer users are lucky if they use 25% of its potential or car owners, home owners, etc. See what I mean?

    • http://tmonews.com David

      Mega-like this comment.

    • Ichigo

It’s not about hating apple, it’s about apple being like a little child. Suing everyone just to avoid competition. It’s just ridiculous. Plus the iPhone is just all hype. Cool phone but not the best. That’s why people get fed up sometimes with apple.

      • http://tmonews.com David

They aren’t suing everyone to avoid competition. That’s ridiculous. They are suing in their minds to protect their ideas and intellectual property. Even Apple isn’t as crazy to believe they can destroy the competition through lawsuits. If you believe that then I’ve got the winning lottery numbers for you.

      • AlealeG2

So what? Are they suing you? Apple is suing companies that have stolen their ideas sorta speak. I’m not gonna lie but have you seen the galaxy versions of samsung? Its a total copy of the iphone. I own the 7 inch tab and I have s spare galaxy phone so I know what I’m talking about. Let’s be honest here but apple has every right to sue. If you created something and you have another company copying you would you sue them too? Hell..even the lock screens on most android phones kinda look like the iphones lock screen by just the way you are swyping it. Let the iphone come to tmobile..More competition and it only benefits us. Customers are at a win win situation here with more variety.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tung-Nguyen/30600639 Tung Nguyen

Actually lawsuits hurt the consumer. Companies that lose lawsuits pass the cost on to the consumer.

The only thing I had against iPhone was that it was not officially available for T-mobile.  But if it keeps T mobile as a viable company, great! (I like android, REALLY like it)

Does anyone see the real reason here?  Android is killing it, for real because it’s available SO many places on so many carriers.  While Apple does appreciate a niche market and the profit from the niche market, there is a real new market. a real Pentaband phone (like nokia’s N8, C7)  Low prices, plus good data plans….Good market…

  • phonegeek

It only makes sense for tmo to acquire an iPhone 5. That would be instant sales, plus not everyone likes android or blackberry. I vote yes for the iPhone 5 coming to tmo.

Won’t AT&T use Tmo’s bands for their 4g?  If so, Apple might as well give them to T-mo.

Would a Tmobile iPhone be any different than an ATT iPhone”  Don’t they both run on GSM?  Just like don’t Verizon and Sprint both run on CDMA?  If all 4 carriers had the iPhone then t here could be at least some competition based on price and service.  Why not then have Boost which is Sprint have it too?

    • Anonymous

While T-Mobile is GMS, they use a different frequency for 3G.

Apple would need to support this frequency in the iPhone.

But my iPhone 3GS gets pretty zippy speed on T-Mobile’s EDGE service.

I want to see what effect a T-Mobile iPhone 5, would have on AT&T’s subscriber base. AT&T has always gained, because no other carrier sold the iPhone, prior to Verizon launching the CDMA version of the iPhone 4.

That’s why AT&T’s churn is so low. No one is leaving them in droves. I think, that if Sprint, and T-Mobile started carrying the next gen iPhone, AT&T will need to watch out.

Sprint and T-Mobile has way more attractive rate and data plans, than AT&T and Verizon.

People can’t afford to have cell phone bills that are $100 or more, just for one line.

  • hecg55

I would never purchase the iPhone for myself. And to be completely honest I’m kind of an apple hater,BUT on a business point of view if they sold it to tmobile they would make tons of money even if it wasn’t pentaband… Sell them then when and if the merge happens all the people that liked it will buy the next one..

Android users use more data….(I use get throttled every month at 5GB on my sensation), so if you want less data hogs then you’d want more iphone users. They really don’t do much with their devices. ;)

      • Tortionist

I don’t think that you can accurately say Android users use more data, same thing with the iphone though. It can’t be accurately said that iphone users use more data either. I’m an Android user and I use less data than most people. Most months(90% of the time) I use less than 200 Megabytes. It’s based off of what you do with your phone and how much of a life you have. If you have a real life, work, school, family, etc. then you probably text a bit, play some games, make some phone calls, etc. If you have little to no life then your constantly on your phone playing MMOs or watching movies, etc. Then you’re a data hog regardless of what smartphone you use.

For T-mobile, Apple engineering is 10x easier than Sprint:

    1. Apple/AT&T take AT&T version, add T-Mobile’s AWS band (1700/2100MHz).
    2. Existing 2100MHz band is kept for EU/Rest of the world roaming.
    3. 850/1900 is added for AT&T rural roaming.
    4. UMTS900 is removed for rural rest of world overlay roaming but
roaming is still possible with 2G (specifically FOR ROAMERS) of
    quad-band 850/900/1800/1900.

AT&T Version 1 already sold and upgraded (faster specs, v5, 85% of
    the world population): GSM 2G 850/900/1800/1900 + UMTS/HSPA+ 21.6 in
latest iphone v5 rumored 850/900/1900/2100MHz. Aka Americas standard +
    worldwide standard.

    AT&T Version 2 (t-mobile low cost death-child lol, t-mobile brand
VERSION): SAME THING AS ABOVE but replace UMTS 900 (overseas dense
rural+urban capacity add) with AWS 1700/2100MHz. You still have global
roaming but global roaming only on the main carriers (AT&T,
Vodafone, etc, etc). You have AT&T+AT&T rural roaming (850/1900)
everywhere in the USA+Americas + rest of the world. NO compromise
really because mobile networks abroad in Europe for example use UMTS2100
for macro and UMTS900 for in-doors. So if you’re roaming abroad you may
not have in-door coverage as Version 1 but you have in-doors WITHIN the
USA and while in Europe simply go outdoors or something. Very minor
issuance. Plus you’re traveling, SO EXPLORE SOME CULTURE OR SOMETHING.
WTF cares about the phone. Oh Google Maps works fine outdoors in Europe
    on UMTS2100. ;-)

CDMA2000 adds head-ache and inter-standard phones (like the VZW global phones).

    CDMA+GSM version: Bastardized version for VZW/Sprint + Certain Tier-1/2
Asia carriers running CDMA2000 of the Version 1 with CDMA2000 added.
    This increases battery life wastage.

Regardless, your T-Mobile phone purchased before the merger will continue to work as T-Mobile’s coverage will not cease, but instead be called “AT&T”. Similarly, you’re contract will continue as is until it’s expiration, however, you won’t be making your checks payable to T-Mobile, but instead to “AT&T”.

I’m an avid Android user on T-Mobile since the launch of the T-Mobile G1 in 2008. I would be extremly happy if T-Mobile began to sell the iPhone 5, it would give T-Mobile a much needed subscriber push and hopefully kill off the merger with the evil AT&T, then Google can buy T-Mobile !

  • hmm

If Tmo doesn’t get the Iphone there is just one word that sums it all up.  Collusion.

  • SlideandShuffle

I know a TMobile rep who works for corporate and he said a lot of changes will be coming in October…stay tuned!

    • Jarrod

Is that in a good or bad way?

I will wait a month or two more to see if this going to happen but if T-Mobile neither offer the iPhone nor a wider range of Android/Winmo devices I’m definitely out.
This has been a 9 and a half year relationship and until recently before 3G/4G appeared on the horizon I could buy phones from anywhere and that’s what I did in order to stay with T-Mobile because of the absolutely terrible choice of phones offered here but now with 3G/4G I cannot buy other phones because obviously they will not work with T-Mobile on the amazing exclusive 1700 frequency. It is good to be patient but…really.

No wonder they are selling to AT&T.

    And thank god for Carly.

    • OKDave

You made a decent case – right up to the point where you said “Winmo” devices. Then your credibility collapsed like a WalMart card table.

  • Minioninnc

Had it, unlocked it, jail broke it, still wasn’t enough, sold it, bought android, bought another android, and another android, this time, rooted & rom’d it, still with android…see a pattern here? iPhone 5, once again, another android will be purchased while iPhone 5 remains on shelf.

I just don’t get it.  Did you ever think that different people like different things?  Just because you prefer one thing doesn’t mean that someone else’s choice is stupid or inferior.

  • Robert Le

what is so good about the iphone? its just a phone..

    • Jarrod

Its a phone that changed the Smartphone category and added new innovative features. So to say that it is like every single other phone on the market would be a huge lie.

      • OKDave

Jarrod, I gotta tell ya, you sound just like Noel Shemsky, the crazy Trekkie on “Frasier,” Any time anyone said anything bad about Trek, he broke into this trembling, hysterical defense of it…maybe we should coin a new name for you guys, such as…”IPhonies…”

        • The ATL Guy

I think Jarrod’s response was VERY RESPONSIBLE.
Some of you Apple haters go ballistic at the mere mention of the Iphone.
          Its COMEDY GOLD!
          Keep up the good work.

Who said I hated the iPhone? I was blasting Jarrod for his Apple sycophant reply. It really did just remind me of poor old Noel. Apple’s fine, if that floats your boat, trendy appeals to a lot of people or Apple wouldn’t be so successful.

You’re absolutely wrong.  The Nokia 2190 is the best.

I’m all for the iPhone coming to T-Mobile cuz business is business. The longing for an iPhone is what I believe to be pretty crazy. They stand in line for hours (even days) for it. What exactly are you paying for when you purchase one? A high-res screen?…I guess. It’s a 3g device. Not very customizable. Not like Android anyway. You got a screen full of icons. I’ll give it that iOS does have more quality apps but nothing so unique that Android doesn’t have a similar app to match it. When it comes to speed and the smoothness of the device, in the beginning, iPhone had the upper hand, but Android progressed so quickly since it began that I honestly feel like Androids current lineup of phone is just as smooth (if not smoother) then the iPhone. And by the way it’s progressing, it’ll surpass what Steve Jobs plan for any upcoming future iPhones to the point where Apple has to catch up to Google. To be honest, I think it already started. Suing for ideas and intellectual property? REALLY? That’s like Tom from MySpace suing Mark Zuckerberg for the same reason. For the same price of an iPhone, I’d definitely get an Android device over it. I think some people need to really weigh both out before purchasing a phone and not go for a phone just cuz it’s an Apple.

Now I do believe there are iPhone owners that like the simplicity of the phone and know how to use it to it’s full potential and good for you. Whatever works for them. I personally like choice and customization that’s why Android is the way I go. I’m talking to the other iPhone owners that talk like there phone is superior and can do anything and everything. I do believe that Android has features that iPhone is only starting to incorporate in there next device. I’m just saying.

    • Tortionist

I couldn’t have put it any better.

It’s all about choices. T-Mo having the iPhone 5 is good for T-Mo, especially if it’s a penta-band phone. If the merger goes through then you get to keep the phone and use it fully. If it does not, you are still able to use it fully, and T-Mo increases their subscriber numbers. Most of us are on this site because we love T-Mo and if you have a choice of which carrier to be on, you want T-Mo.

Many people will go to a carrier just to get the iPhone and every carrier having it levels the playing field. Like others here I prefer Android but I like the equality in having all carriers offer the iPhone. That way users who desire the iPhone can base their decision on things like price, coverage, and customer service when choosing their carrier, since they’ll all have the iPhone available.

well said… people need to stop bitching iphone vs android.  no one can deny the popularity of the iphone. regardless if you like it or not, this is a great business decision by tmobile.

I know several long-term subscribers to T-Mobile who left and solely because of the iPhone.  It’s definitely because they got better service with AT&T.

      • Rush8220

ppl left for the iPhone when flip phones we’re the only thing you could get. it sure wasn’t because you got better service with at&t, the fact is the iPhone isn’t exclusive to at&t anymore. it very well could come to T-Mobile welcome to the jungle baby I think it will be interesting to see the iPhone fares with real competition.

I hate to say this, being an Android fan, but that sucks. Steve Jobs is Apple. Who knows what will happen after he leaves.
