Hurricane Irene T-Mobile Service Update

T-Mobile provided a quick update to their service restoration efforts letting all of their customers know that they are working hard to keep the network up and running for all the areas affected by Hurricane Irene. As of 1pm Pacific Time they were running at 85% operational service and we imagine they’ve already increased that number since the press release was issued.

How did T-Mobile service work for you during Hurricane Irene?

T-Mobile USA, Inc. today issued an update on its efforts to restore its wireless network in North Carolina, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions affected by Hurricane Irene.

Following is updated information from T-Mobile as of August 28 at 2:00 p.m. EDT:

  • T-Mobile’s Disaster Response Team has been deployed to areas first hit by Hurricane Irene throughout Virginia and North Carolina to conduct onsite recovery efforts. The team is deploying dozens of generators to restore service to cell sites that lost commercial power.
  • On average, 85 percent of T-Mobile wireless coverage is operational throughout the Northeast.
  • More than 97 percent of T-Mobile’s cell sites in North Carolina are now operational.
  • Virginia and the Washington D.C. markets are experiencing the highest impact due to widespread commercial power outages affecting millions of people.  T-Mobile crews are visiting sites and bringing in additional generators to the hardest hit areas. T-Mobile has mobilized resources from across the country to support the recovery efforts.

For customers in these markets, the following T-Mobile stores are open for customers to visit in order to place calls or text messages to friends and family:

  • Rfgenerator

Lost service this morning here in Spencer, MA. Area wasn’t even hit that bad. Suspect power is out at tower as they have no backup power source. Service stillout at 8PM.

I think we’re all going to have to go with flare guns or smoke signals. systems just can’t handle the capacity.

Hey I have a trusty Carrier Pigeon named Pesto who can get any message I need delivered on time. He’s the fastest, cheapest Airmail Express Service I’ve found.

Me: “Good Pesto, want a cracker?”

Pesto: “That’s Polly the Parrot you imbecile!!!”

      Me: O.O

Never lost service once here in NYC

  • Hrose1965m

Hell the way tmobile is now a small gust of wind knocked my cell coverage out not no more though I’m ATT as of 2 days ago was with tmobile 11 years goodbye old friend

    • Anonymous

If you hate T-Mobile so much, why are you reading this article?

      • Hrose1965m

Never said I hate them there service is going down hill with the earthquake last week I had no service for 10 hours all my fellow coworkers had service I then knew it was time to leave tmobile

        • the_truth

Put your cell phone in a box and hide it from yourself. It’s too much for you.

    • the_truth

Small gust of wind? Heck I’m far northeast and I have 1/2 tree on the ground in my backyard. What chance has a cell tower???

  • Sal

What really amaze me is that tmobile does not have any update posted in their web sites. I had to use friend’s phones with Verizon service in their phone to communicate with family in NYC. This experience makes me think about the role of tmobile in a future emergency.

You need to take a deep breath and get serious.  Storms that don’t happen very often are no indication on the quality of service.  Other mobile operators also had problems.  Don’t fool yourself.  If it makes you feel better find another carrier but don’t be surprised when that carrier is not up 100% for every natural disaster.

    • http://tmonews.com David

Which is amazing because none of the carriers have updates on their websites. Perhaps if you had tried to use their Twitter and/or Facebook pages you would have seen the updates as they suggested you do to stay in touch with them.

    • Sutton1626

NO Tmobile service here in VA following the hurricane. Power is back on, but no cell service for 24 hrs so far> EVERYONE that I know that are with other carriers never lost their service. May be time to pay the cost of changing my cell phone service. Finally borrowed another cell phone to call Tmobile-after speaking with someone in another country for 30 minutes, we still dont have service.

      • the_truth

Calling customer care and tying up the line with them won’t make the engineers work any faster. They do the best they can. God–what did you people do before cell phone? Act of God people.

      • Round-the-World

Maybe you should state which location in VA does not have service as there is service in the majority of TMO’s service area across the state (or commonwealth to be more precise).

      • Whodunit

bc calling customer care helps the situation I’m sure…

  • Thompc82

I live in New Orleans, in 2005 I had coverage from t-mobile through Katrina when Sprint, Nextel and at&t failed family members. My whole family switched during that time when T-mobile partnered with FEMA to deliver free phones and service for that time period. Tmo for ever.

    • Chatter

I didn’t know about this – thanks for sharing.

    • TheWayOfThings

This is true.. during Katrina, T-mobile was one of the only carriers up and running in the area… and if memory serves me correctly, I believe T-mobile also was very forgiving of overdue bills and usage for the victims of Katrina…

      thats pretty cool of Maggy.

no service in ct for HOURS.  We never lost power, or cable, almost no storm effect here.  Hasn’t even been windy since this am, and my service just went out hours after the end of the storm.

.-ì just got an iPad 2-32GB for $ 22.54 and my girlfriend loves her Panasonìc Lumìx GF 1 Camera that we got for $ 38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 657 which only cost me $ 62.81 tobuy.

I guess I cant really tell the difference with this HD2. I may have lost signal but I’m so used to not having any signal on this phone anyway to where I didn’t notice any difference. In Atlanta Ga btw.

  • Gbarry1944

Have no service in Davidsonville. Tried to visit the store at the annapolis mall yesterday. Store was close. Sprint was open. Not a happy customer

  • ShawnD

In western suburban Philly, no problems with service at all. (The earthquake knocked us off the air for half a day, but not the hurricane.)TMO was our lifeline, since we had no power for 30 hours. Had to charge our phones in our truck, but otherwise service was great. Wish the myTouch 4G had better battery life!

No service during storm and still have no service in Boston.

While I’ve been miffed at T-Mobile for a lot of things lately, this isn’t one of them.

Getting things up and running after a storm like this can be tricky. Flooding, downed trees, power outtages, etc are a pain to deal with. So is getting technicians to the location.

Also, try powering your phone off and on now and then if you still don’t have service. Sometimes they don’t automagically find a signal after a tower has been brought back online.

  • TMoFan

Service was fine for me until the late afternoon. Since then my G2 has been cycling between a few bars and no service, and I have no data connection at all. Not even edge. At least I had a bar to make a few phone calls. When I left this morning it was still doing to same thing, and now that I’m in the city coverage is perfect.

    • IT Guy

Out here visiting Virginia Beach, mine was flaky for a couple hours, then dropped out completely for another 2-3 hours but came back up working. Data was intermittant for a bit, but that came back on too.

  • mattyrugg

None in Newport, RI either. Went out about 20 mins after we lost power. No signal until you get off the island. Every other carrier has service except tmo. I called customer service yesterday to let them know, and they were totally rude and denied any sort of outage. 12 years with them and their customer service is a sinking ship. They used to be the best.

    • Americorachel

Same Here MATT…had it on Brenton Point….doesn’t help on Bayview Ave..lol

Little in Lakeville, MA at my house where I usually have full service. Haven’t had it for nearly a day!

  • Phero54

No service for 5 days and I friggin live in Washington State

      !!!!

You should probably get ahold of T-Mobile. Or make sure your device is working properly.

I’ve had spotty service at best. Saturday in Chesterfield, VA, there was small bursts of service where I would get a bunch of texts all at once and send out a bunch but then have no service at all. Even if I didn’t move my phone. I feel like the might have been doing some sort of round robin approach to people getting their messages. Sunday was spent driving around the county looking for any coverage and when they restored power to a couple of the neighborhoods (around 7:30PM EST) my service picked up a great amount. Of course now I’m at work by the Chesterfield airport and can’t find any signal to save my life. And when I do get it, it’s two bars on Edge. Not horrible, just really annoying to have to find a single spot in the building where I might get a bar to send out texts / make a call.
