T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread Update List Of Improvements, Retail Stores Receiving Inventory

I am almost prepared to shed a tear as we’ve been receiving word all day that retail stores are on alert for shipments of the T-Mobile G2x that are alleged to contain brand new devices arriving with Gingerbread already installed. While we can’t confirm the installation of Gingerbread on these new devices we’ve heard from multiple sources that inventory is being replenished early this week. Things are looking very very good that we could see a total re-launch of the device this week as T-Mobile and LG prepare to alert customers on how to update their device and fix a lot of those nagging problems that have plagued the phone and caused this whole brouhaha.

While we wouldn’t say the update is “official” as of yet, we don’t see T-Mobile or LG doing much to stand in the way of people taking advantage of the LG Mobile Update updater and getting Gingerbread now. In fact, you should do that right now if you haven’t already done so. If you aren’t comfortable using that method bookmark the link at the end of this post as that is where we believe (according to this leaked shot we’ve obtained) LG will release the G2x Gingerbread update. From what we are hearing there might be a forced OTA but rumor has it you’ll have to do it from a desktop and the link provided below.

FINALLY AFTER I GOT TMO TO SHIP ME A SENSATION FOR FREEE 3 days ago

There are good arguments to say that (if the bugs get fixed), the G2x is a better device than the Sensation 4G.

        • http://profiles.google.com/drepope100 u m

I have both HTC Sensation and the G2X. Both are 2 of the best devices to-date, but I try not to compare because each one offers a different experience. As far as pure speed, the G2X generally feels faster, but the Sensation offers more features through HTC Sense overlay. It simply depends on what the consumer is looking for.

Problem:  no mention of camera app.  Sticking with the stock camera app would break 1080p video recording functionality, thus making the G2x spec sheet false advertising. It would also affect the pending class action.

No where in the small print does it imply they’ll be switching back to the LG camera app. The stock camera that they ended up including does 1080p just fine. I just tested it before making this comment.

      • zps

ugh, really?  then we probably won’t get an updgraded app.  is this something that could be fixed by a third party in the market?

Be careful regarding the LG Updater. It failed to update the baseband on my G2x.. and now my phone is a brick. I’ve sent it back to LG to have it fixed..

  • kasem wilson

never seen that phone in the wild must not be that good

  • Alvin Brinson

The upgrade price of the G2X on my EM+ account has jumped… :(… It was listed at $499 until now, and the Sensation was $549. Now they’re reversed, and the G2X is available online again for upgrade, but it is $549 and the sensation is $499… And sometimes the prices are different if you’re not logged in. I wish they’d settle on a price!

    • Anonymous

anyone on even more plus cannot put phones on payments anymore

      • Anonymous

Guess you have to go on the Value plan or buy the phone outright.  G2X was upgradable for a little while for $399, then disappeared then reappeared, as he said, for $549.  So I guess they think its $50 better than the Sensation now

If you are going to go anywhere away from TMO, go to Verizon.  They blow Sprint out of the water.  They are a little more expensive, but it is worth it compared to Sprint.

@David can you please inquire if LG is going to update the stock Gingerbread camera app, which most agree is far inferior to that contained on the official Froyo ROM.  thanks!

    • Charlieparsons67

Hey I do belive that this is not the final update it is a beta and there is an offical ota on the way if you look you will see that the kernal is still the same and some of the bug fixes are not final as for screen bleed your only otion is to do a waranty exchange i think anyway.  And I hear that TMO and LG are going to be restocking the stores as early as this week with gingerbread pre-installed so I would wait till that happens and exchange out your screenbleeding froyo build for a nice new hopfully bug free G2X.

If one of my line doesn’t have DATA service and I buy an unlocked SMART
PHONE from other source. Can I use that smart phone for my non data
    line?

I heared that if I don’t have DATA subscription on my line, I can’t use smartphones and it won’t work. True?

is it that I just don’t get data internet on that phone cos I don’t
have data subscription or the whole phone features won’t work?

    thanks

    • Anonymous

Yes, I think that’s how it works. The phone may try to get data anyway, and it probably will unless it’s blocked by the network. If it does get data I imagine the charges would show up on your next bill. What I would do to be safe is download a widget or app that allows you to turn off mobile data (unless you can already do that without a separate app), and just use wifi at home or where ever.

Just updated, the menu bar is small in size….also it’s a bit clunky when going through apps, seem that all is not fixed. What’s the big deal about Gingerbread, anyway?

    • Anonymous

A new UI, that’s about it. I think.

I don’t think there’s going to be anything big until ICS, and even then, if there’s no HW-accelerated UI, I’m out of the Android game for good.

      • Daniel7992

We don’t want you here anyway

      • Anonymous

Actually android does do alot of hardware acceleration – live wallpapers, games and youtube/videos are hardware accelerated (if the phone has a gpu and drivers).  From what I understand the new honeycomb UI is 100% hardware accelerated (everything is rendered on GPU).  For the standard phone (1.0 to 2.3) UI – everything is rendered as bit blt and then spit out as a rasterizeded image.  According to the Google IO sessions this was done for several reasons 1) early phones like the G1 didn’t have dedicated GPUs 2) people didn’t notice a difference (in speed or in visual quality) between hardware accelerated and software rendered UI.  They said most of the sluggishness was do to poorly written programs or garbage collection (causing the phone to stall).

But most developers argue that there’s a difference between the 3 homescreens of android 1.5 and the 9 screens with 3D effect transitions of today (to say nothing of the 3D UI’s of new phones like EVO3D and Thrill 4G) and so a fairly frequently requested feature is a hardware accelerated UI.

Since ICS is supposed to be based on Honeycomb I think it’s a safe bet that it will for sure have a HW accelerated UI, just like the Iphone.  But I also think it’s a safe bet people will still complain about the android UI.

Huh. Is that it? Confirmation anyone?

  • slammin

The “unofficial” from a few days ago is v1.0.1.5 (the downloaded file, not the actual FW)

The version from this link is v1.0.1.7 and a different date.
But same file size.  Need someone to try and compare.  I updated this weekend, all is working well and have the new baseband.   XDA forums is a good source of info

    • zps

are there bugs aplenty in these releases?  new cam app in the newest firmware or same as friday?

      • slammin

Does not have the same camera app as when first released.  Suggest that people interested in upgrades go to XDA forums and get directions for ClockworkMod recovery.  One can flash that to your phone, back up the stock version.  The upgrade, reinstall ClockworkMod and recover if you don’t like it – except that your baseband (deals with the phone radio part) stays updated.  Baseband change does not seem to be an issue for me, but can wait a week and see what others say.

Would guess the developers will get a custom ROM that will include the old camera app at some point.

But, this type of hacking may make some people a bit nervous.  If your phone works well and you are not too curious, leave as is.

        • zps

i’m still hoping they update gingerbread with the old app.  i am doing my best to retweet copying LG on every complaint about the junky new camera app on twitter.  i think that actually helps.  the question is whether this is the last update we will ever see.  if so i will be installing a ROM that uses 2.3.4 or .5 and that includes old camera.  if you can point me to one, please do!

Britt try rebooting the computer and the phone if that does not work uninstall the lg software updater and the drivers see what hsappens.  I have heard of this problem happening before and I originally did not have the problem but I had to go to work before I ran the update so when I got home I did a factory reset first and then it would not read my phone at all so I went through the whole process again.

I see it sometimes not too often though.  Just remember It is a small computer I have a dual core processor on my computer and it lags sometimes too, it has to do with how much is in the memory also among other things don’t just say its a dual core and it lags whats up?  that is ignorant All computers have problems sometimes

      • Anonymous

thanks for responding…what you said is absolutely correct.

my point however was that i had zero lag on froyo. when i say zero i really mean zero.  now, since updating i have had lag similar to the lag i had on the original mt4g and i have serious lag in the app launcher like when i swipe to scroll through the apps sometimes it moves only 2 rows down(only when i have live wallpaper).  was just wondering who else has this issue. thanks

Try backing up and then doing a factory reset.  I think you probably have some software installed causing the device to lag.  Just Remove apps you don’t need.  Anything that constantly checks the state of the phone like automation software, twitter/friendstream checking etc can cause the phone to lag.  You can also run a task killer to kill all the tasks in memory.  But dont constantly do this as it drains alot of battery.

Dude learn how to read. It clearly said the G2x might not get an OTA update. Manual updates really suck cause if anything goes wrong, your precious device is screwed.
