T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread Update List Of Improvements, Retail Stores Receiving Inventory

I am almost prepared to shed a tear as we’ve been receiving word all day that retail stores are on alert for shipments of the T-Mobile G2x that are alleged to contain brand new devices arriving with Gingerbread already installed. While we can’t confirm the installation of Gingerbread on these new devices we’ve heard from multiple sources that inventory is being replenished early this week. Things are looking very very good that we could see a total re-launch of the device this week as T-Mobile and LG prepare to alert customers on how to update their device and fix a lot of those nagging problems that have plagued the phone and caused this whole brouhaha.

While we wouldn’t say the update is “official” as of yet, we don’t see T-Mobile or LG doing much to stand in the way of people taking advantage of the LG Mobile Update updater and getting Gingerbread now. In fact, you should do that right now if you haven’t already done so. If you aren’t comfortable using that method bookmark the link at the end of this post as that is where we believe (according to this leaked shot we’ve obtained) LG will release the G2x Gingerbread update. From what we are hearing there might be a forced OTA but rumor has it you’ll have to do it from a desktop and the link provided below.

FINALLY AFTER I GOT TMO TO SHIP ME A SENSATION FOR FREEE 3 days ago

    • Lucky you

      • There are good arguments to say that (if the bugs get fixed), the G2x is a better device than the Sensation 4G.

        • u m

I have both HTC Sensation and the G2X. Both are 2 of the best devices to-date, but I try not to compare because each one offers a different experience. As far as pure speed, the G2X generally feels faster, but the Sensation offers more features through HTC Sense overlay. It simply depends on what the consumer is looking for.

  • Problem:  no mention of camera app.  Sticking with the stock camera app would break 1080p video recording functionality, thus making the G2x spec sheet false advertising. It would also affect the pending class action.

No where in the small print does it imply they’ll be switching back to the LG camera app. The stock camera that they ended up including does 1080p just fine. I just tested it before making this comment.

      • zps

ugh, really?  then we probably won’t get an updgraded app.  is this something that could be fixed by a third party in the market?

Be careful regarding the LG Updater. It failed to update the baseband on my G2x.. and now my phone is a brick. I’ve sent it back to LG to have it fixed..

  • kasem wilson

never seen that phone in the wild must not be that good

  • Alvin Brinson

The upgrade price of the G2X on my EM+ account has jumped… :(… It was listed at $499 until now, and the Sensation was $549. Now they’re reversed, and the G2X is available online again for upgrade, but it is $549 and the sensation is $499… And sometimes the prices are different if you’re not logged in. I wish they’d settle on a price!

    • Anonymous

anyone on even more plus cannot put phones on payments anymore

      • Anonymous

Guess you have to go on the Value plan or buy the phone outright.  G2X was upgradable for a little while for $399, then disappeared then reappeared, as he said, for $549.  So I guess they think its $50 better than the Sensation now

If you are going to go anywhere away from TMO, go to Verizon.  They blow Sprint out of the water.  They are a little more expensive, but it is worth it compared to Sprint.

@David can you please inquire if LG is going to update the stock Gingerbread camera app, which most agree is far inferior to that contained on the official Froyo ROM.  thanks!

    • Charlieparsons67

Hey I do belive that this is not the final update it is a beta and there is an offical ota on the way if you look you will see that the kernal is still the same and some of the bug fixes are not final as for screen bleed your only otion is to do a waranty exchange i think anyway.  And I hear that TMO and LG are going to be restocking the stores as early as this week with gingerbread pre-installed so I would wait till that happens and exchange out your screenbleeding froyo build for a nice new hopfully bug free G2X.

  • If one of my line doesn’t have DATA service and I buy an unlocked SMART
PHONE from other source. Can I use that smart phone for my non data
    line?

I heared that if I don’t have DATA subscription on my line, I can’t use smartphones and it won’t work. True?

is it that I just don’t get data internet on that phone cos I don’t
have data subscription or the whole phone features won’t work?

    thanks

    • Anonymous

Yes, I think that’s how it works. The phone may try to get data anyway, and it probably will unless it’s blocked by the network. If it does get data I imagine the charges would show up on your next bill. What I would do to be safe is download a widget or app that allows you to turn off mobile data (unless you can already do that without a separate app), and just use wifi at home or where ever.

Just updated, the menu bar is small in size….also it’s a bit clunky when going through apps, seem that all is not fixed. What’s the big deal about Gingerbread, anyway?

    • Anonymous

A new UI, that’s about it. I think.

I don’t think there’s going to be anything big until ICS, and even then, if there’s no HW-accelerated UI, I’m out of the Android game for good.

      • Daniel7992

We don’t want you here anyway

      • Anonymous

Actually android does do alot of hardware acceleration – live wallpapers, games and youtube/videos are hardware accelerated (if the phone has a gpu and drivers).  From what I understand the new honeycomb UI is 100% hardware accelerated (everything is rendered on GPU).  For the standard phone (1.0 to 2.3) UI – everything is rendered as bit blt and then spit out as a rasterizeded image.  According to the Google IO sessions this was done for several reasons 1) early phones like the G1 didn’t have dedicated GPUs 2) people didn’t notice a difference (in speed or in visual quality) between hardware accelerated and software rendered UI.  They said most of the sluggishness was do to poorly written programs or garbage collection (causing the phone to stall).

But most developers argue that there’s a difference between the 3 homescreens of android 1.5 and the 9 screens with 3D effect transitions of today (to say nothing of the 3D UI’s of new phones like EVO3D and Thrill 4G) and so a fairly frequently requested feature is a hardware accelerated UI.

Since ICS is supposed to be based on Honeycomb I think it’s a safe bet that it will for sure have a HW accelerated UI, just like the Iphone.  But I also think it’s a safe bet people will still complain about the android UI.

Huh. Is that it? Confirmation anyone?

  • slammin

The “unofficial” from a few days ago is v1.0.1.5 (the downloaded file, not the actual FW)

The version from this link is v1.0.1.7 and a different date.
But same file size.  Need someone to try and compare.  I updated this weekend, all is working well and have the new baseband.   XDA forums is a good source of info

    • zps

are there bugs aplenty in these releases?  new cam app in the newest firmware or same as friday?

      • slammin

Does not have the same camera app as when first released.  Suggest that people interested in upgrades go to XDA forums and get directions for ClockworkMod recovery.  One can flash that to your phone, back up the stock version.  The upgrade, reinstall ClockworkMod and recover if you don’t like it – except that your baseband (deals with the phone radio part) stays updated.  Baseband change does not seem to be an issue for me, but can wait a week and see what others say.

Would guess the developers will get a custom ROM that will include the old camera app at some point.

But, this type of hacking may make some people a bit nervous.  If your phone works well and you are not too curious, leave as is.

        • zps

i’m still hoping they update gingerbread with the old app.  i am doing my best to retweet copying LG on every complaint about the junky new camera app on twitter.  i think that actually helps.  the question is whether this is the last update we will ever see.  if so i will be installing a ROM that uses 2.3.4 or .5 and that includes old camera.  if you can point me to one, please do!

    • Charleparsons67

Britt try rebooting the computer and the phone if that does not work uninstall the lg software updater and the drivers see what hsappens.  I have heard of this problem happening before and I originally did not have the problem but I had to go to work before I ran the update so when I got home I did a factory reset first and then it would not read my phone at all so I went through the whole process again.

most people that have updated said the updated solved alot of problems for them, the only bad thing is the camera is total garbage (lost 720p/1080p recording – you’re now just like the nexus S).

I see it sometimes not too often though.  Just remember It is a small computer I have a dual core processor on my computer and it lags sometimes too, it has to do with how much is in the memory also among other things don’t just say its a dual core and it lags whats up?  that is ignorant All computers have problems sometimes

      • Anonymous

thanks for responding…what you said is absolutely correct.

my point however was that i had zero lag on froyo. when i say zero i really mean zero.  now, since updating i have had lag similar to the lag i had on the original mt4g and i have serious lag in the app launcher like when i swipe to scroll through the apps sometimes it moves only 2 rows down(only when i have live wallpaper).  was just wondering who else has this issue. thanks

        • Anonymous

Try backing up and then doing a factory reset.  I think you probably have some software installed causing the device to lag.  Just Remove apps you don’t need.  Anything that constantly checks the state of the phone like automation software, twitter/friendstream checking etc can cause the phone to lag.  You can also run a task killer to kill all the tasks in memory.  But dont constantly do this as it drains alot of battery.

  • Dude learn how to read. It clearly said the G2x might not get an OTA update. Manual updates really suck cause if anything goes wrong, your precious device is screwed.

Oh I cannot wait till AT&T closes this deal cause T-mobile USA really needs help before loyal customers that going insane.

  • I am glad LG is stepping it up a bit…..BUT…for those with the testicular fortitude, I say really step your game up by rooting your G2x and put the MIUI Celebration rom on your phone.  Remember testicular fortitude is a prerequisite to rooting.

I don’t know what magic fairy dust landed on my G2X today, but the update that on the first day or two did nothing to remedy my phones problems is now working fine. It hasn’t rebooted all day, battery life has improved, and the phone is handling its heat issues (it cools off now, instead of needing a “breather”).

I don’t know what made the difference, but now its actually acting like the dual core phone it is. Its funny how phones are wonky after initially recieving an update, and then things work themselves out somehow.

Did a manual update yesterday and G2X is working better than before.  The battery life is outstanding now and so far no reboots.

    • Is this the official update from the link on this page or the other update? Does the 4G and reception bar turn green ? Thanks in advance

  • Jasonv27

On the lg updater it said my sagas will be deleted is that true

  • Scobra69

thanks now im the proud owner of an lg brick $200.00 down the drain

just spoke to someone at lg they told that they will indeed have OTA in the next two weeks also try the site to download it its not there anymore i rather wait two more weeks and get the OTA better hopefully the camera will be better

  • Rick Sibrian

Just got off the phone with LG after trying to upgrade my phone with their tool, guy tells me not to use this method as a OTA is coming very soon from TMOBILE. NOT LG.  Guy says it will be out 1-2 weeks. Yea Sure

    • Sarah_han

haha 1-2 weeks? ya right sounds more like 1-2 months at this rate

My issues that I had with both my G2x’s that I haven’t seen addressed are:

    A) WiFi keeps cutting out
    B) Phone either remains on 2G or goes to GSM only for no reason (all day long)

    • Anonymous

the update fixes issue A, issue B is a problem everybody on T-mobile gets, its not the phone’s fault.  That depends on what settings you set in *#*#4636#*#* menu and the coverage for T-mobile in your area (and if you’re moving around).

Already did the upgrade. I’m really liking everything except the smaller keys on the keypad. Phone was fast before now it down right flies. Even the battery lasts more than 15 hours now. This is a GREAT upgrade …:-D

  • Jamesleonard1982

My buddy updated his and got the new market. I did mine but no new market and I tried the apk but that wont work either! Any idea?

  • Jamesleonard1982

    2452 benchmark btw

  • DrG

So no big deal there…. Just scored 2350 pre-update. This is a replacement unit i got two weeks ago from Tmo. The old one froze then died permanently after gps/Google maps navigated me Phoenix to Carlsbad, CA. Sucked! Anyway… The new replacement is Froyo but no freezups/locks etc. Working well. Tried to update the new version but wont take….. Says running the latest version. Must be some newer blocked froyo version of 2.2. Battery life still sucks the bucket.

    • zps

use juicedefender.  honestly.  it will blow your mind.

  • Cameron W3st

SO…this STILL won’t update to 2.3 on refurb units?  I have a replacement device and EVEN THOUGH the updater now says model LG-P999DW, it STILL won’t take…what gives here and HOW DO I GET THIS UPDATED?!

Does ANYONE KNow how to do this?!

    • Supposedly have to wait for OTA. I’m starting to wonder if that will even happen.

  • chris23

The highest score that I received on quadrant standard was a little above 2700….the average seems to be 2534

  • Junieruiz

We are getting close all I’m asking for is a release date Gingerbread hopping for 2.3.4 I talk to a friend that runs a t mobile store told me he don’t no the date all it was told to him it coming out in 2 weeks and not to download the LG gingerbread t mobile had nothing to do with that LG did it because of all the heat that was coming towards them… I ask him did t mobile add any new features what’s the update he told me they fix all the bugs even made it faster making the phone brighter and more colorful more vibrant gingerbread keyboard copy and paste a app manager task killer faster web browsing faster bootup next week t mobile start sellin it online again with gingerbread on it I asked him what’s the deal with the camera he told me not to worry it’s still the same LG UI camera and that we will be seeing a G2X Commercial showing off the gingerbread features and the processor speed he said that’s all he knows 4 right now I’m glad I wasn’t desperate I’ll wait for t mobile gingerbread update the best part about the G2X IS THE LG UI CAMERA And THE DUAL CORE PROCESSOR This is still the fastest phone in the U S market :-)

    • zps

      i pray this is true!

    • This is official. T-mobile is sending it OTA.

  • Jamesleonard1982

So since I updated through LG I wont get the tmo update??

Just got an OTA!!!!!!! Hello gingerbread!

    • Anonymous

So, this Gingerbread update is coming via OTA updates as well? I will check my girl’s phone momentarily. Also, does the phone lose information during the update or is. It saved?

      • Msaxon20

        • Nik

yeah not bad at all! I don’t see anything messed up so far.

      • Scott

I did the update yesterday via the updater tool, and even though it told me that the data would be erased, it was all still there after the update.

Just got the update for mine and my wife’s phones.  Her’s just started downloading this morning.  Mine didn’t.  Thought I would check and went to Settings->About phone->Software update and there it was.  Yay!

Pros:  Like the UI much better.  Like the darker colors.  Everything is much much smoother too scrolling and navigating.  Like the interface on the camera better.

Cons:  When typing text/emails, double-space no longer inserts a period.  Can’t seem to find a setting for this.  Update randomly removed certain apps from my desktop (didn’t corrupt the apps themselves, they just disappeared from my desktop).

Have you tried T-Mobile?  I don’t know but maybe they have a specific solution for this scenario?

If not, you’re probably going to have to go to LG’s site and do the update manually.

NO such thing as FREE!  I’m getting a kick out of everyone who is excited to get a FREE G2x.  Do the math folks. T-mobile rolled out the value plans on Sunday.  Take for instance the Unlimited plus family plan.  It’s 140/mo with your free phone…  the same unlimited plus family value plan is the same plan without a credit towards the phone… 99/mo.  Over the life of your two year contract you pay $960.00 more for the exact same service…  So there you go with your free, excuse me I mean almost $1,000 new phones.  Get an EIP installment plan for your phone as there is no interest on the financing and stick with the value plans.

    • Anonymous

I should look over the value plans and see if my unlimited everything loyalty plan is a keeper. It’s a business expense for me, so a write off (for now).

TMO retention gave me a free upgrade to the G2X today. I just called to ask what they could do for me. I tried the G2X previously but returned it due to problems. We’ll see how it works out this time. When I looked at it compared to a Sensation at the TMO store yesterday, the display of the G2X was more vivid, and it was very zippy compared to the laggy Sensed out Sensation. Anyway, Retention assured me that the new device they are sending me is updated to Gingerbread. I have GB 2.3.4 on my Nexus One and the battery life is improved incredibly, so watch for that. I have never done an OTA update, only manual, and prefer this method, so don’t be shy once you know a good update is available. It’s very easy.

      • theWayofThings

If you’ve tried 10 times, then retention knows you’re not serious about canceling and just want something you’re not eligible for…

        • aren’t most people NOT serious when they call? I haven’t seen anybody call and cancel so far. and I haven’t been on contract for over 5 years.

        • Anonymous

I didn’t mention anything about canceling. I have a Nexus One and Nokia E7 and both are outstanding. I just thought I’d see what kind of deal I could get, and figured locking into my loyalty plan for a couple more years ain’t such a bad move. I was impressed with the G2x when I tried it before as I had none of the software issues, even though it’s a carrier phone with bloatware, but I shut down that crap and it was fine except for the screen bleed. I figured waiting to try it again AFTER GB update was worth a try, and then if screen bleed is bad, I can exchange for one with a better display that isn’t unstable. So I just told retention that I just wondered what my upgrade cost would be, and it was entirely their initiative to give it over free. I sure wasn’t looking to game any system but I appreciate the gesture.

I got a *free* one yesterday in the mail. Looks like everything is up to date with the gingerbread and all that. I’m not very experienced w/ Android, but I traded my Samsung Galaxy s4 for the G2x and it’s much much faster and stream-lined. Glad I made the switch! I didn’t know mine was all ready updated, so nice suprise!

Just hopped off the phone with LG. They’ve severed the connection between the LG Mobile Support Tool and their servers and taken down the new firmware. Turns out too many people have gotten their phones bricked. Also, TMO Care says that they’ve have issues with the OTA as well. Some people have had bricked phones, and (according to the support forums) a bunch of people also lost the camera software. I was advised to go to a retail store on August 5th, and have someone there run the update for me. this makes me a sad panda.

  • I did the software update and looks good but I did notice camera settings are different but does work.

  • ok. the camera sucks now.

To anyone that has applied the 2.3.3 update manually and is still having problems, perform a factory reset on the phone. I did the update manually a few days ago and it installed fine, however I still had the odd reboot and random shut down, along with blue tooth and wifi issues. Doing the factory reset immediately fixed the wifi and bluetooth problems I was having and so far no random reboots. Hope this helps, such a great phone on paper but LG/TMO really laid an egg execution wise…

Was thinking of doing this today. Just gonna back up my stuff before doing that. If this doesn’t work, I’m getting a Sensation. I want to like this phone but it keeps giving me reasons not to

Just did my update over 4g and it works really good. It seems a lot faster and I am really loving the green and black theme. Houston, Tx

I’ve updated the LG drivers for my desktop and downloaded the LG Mobile Support Tool.  It says that I have the latest version so no need to update.  I still have 2.2.2 any suggestions on how to dl Gingerbread?  I’ve already tried the software update.

Just received my new free G2X (not refurb) and it has GB. Still shows cell standby is high.

The new update….sucks…though only experienced random shutdowns very rarely….I have had camera issues much more often, stating camera cannot connect….what the f***….and the previous camera/video recorder on 2.2 was MUCH MUCH BETTER…why LG? why T-Mobile? I thought you guys tested and tested to make this phone better…not worst…considering switching back to my Vibrant, now this phone never lost the great camera/video recorder features….whats the point of 8MP and 1080i recording with so many limitations…very disappointed!!!!!!

  • i got my g2x from tmobiles customer service on 8-4-2011.. it came preinstalled with gingerbread and has been the best phone ive ever had. i sent back my sensation 4g since that phone was sooooo slow and laggy and the speaker sucked really bad on it. i played with my g2x and damn what a difference from the sensation 4g in terms of speed. ive had my phone for 4 days now and i havent had a reboot yet or any lag or any kind and my phone has never got hot at all. so maybe i got lucky or something. but i know not ever g2x has issues. i love gingerbread as well but im not gonna lie the camera app does suck pretty bad, but i went over to xda and put a the stock rom that was rooted on my phone and i put the green signal mod on my phone so the 4g and signal bars are green now, also took off bloat ware and also added the screen off animation that the nexus s has. i use an app called LG 2X/Black Notifications which is awesome since it makes my 4 led buttons light up when i get a text or a miss call. but u need root access only on the gingerbread update. if u still have froyo u dont need root access. so i got my phone the way i want it and i couldnt be any happier. oh and over at xda they got the lg camera app working some what so far and i love this camera app.
