Senator Al Franken Says AT&T/T-Mobile Deal Will Kill Competition, T-Mobile Says Nuh Uh

While Senator Herb Kohl has already come out in opposition of the proposed AT&T/T-Mobile takeover, his colleague Senator Al Franken has now responded in his own 24-page letter to the Justice Department and FCC.

“The merger of AT&T and T-Mobile would be a major step towards the creation of an entrenched duopoly in the wireless industry,” Franken writes in a 24-page letter to the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission. “It would concentrate enormous power over the entire telecommunications sector in the hands of only two companies, and it would incentivize AT&T and Verizon to coordinate prices to the detriment of consumers.”

Furthermore Senator Franken says that the emphasis in the wireless industry right now should be innovation through competition and not buying up innovation through mergers:

“American consumers rely on the DOJ and the FCC to protect competition,” Franken writes. “It is only through competition that wireless spectrum usage will become more efficient, handsets more innovative, customer service more responsive, network coverage broader, and prices lower.”

T-Mobile reacted in their own right to respond to the Senator from Minnesota’s comments:

“While we respect Senator Franken, his analysis of our pending transaction is just wrong,” T-Mobile said in a note to the press. “The combination of T-Mobile and AT&T should be approved because it will deliver what consumers are looking for in the age of smart phones, tablets and mobile internet – speed, service quality and reduced costs. As is documented in our government filings, the combination of our two networks creates significant efficiencies that will trigger strong benefits for consumers. We are confident that a thorough review of the record will demonstrate the transaction advances the public interest.”

Why don’t they just open up the frequencies for all of the carriers and then let the real competition begin?

  • Qvcu11

America consumers be VERY AFRAID if the merger att/tmobile is aprove, the reason why consumers  are buying prepaid phones is because they want to save money because they have cheaper prepaid plans this is thanks to competition without compettion you will be paying more. a duopoly att/verizon most like it will cause an increase on plan prices. are you americans phone consumers willing to pay more of your hard earn money. senator Al Franken is against these merger and so do I. the justice department and the FCC should protect consumers and vote against these merger, wealth is build by saving money and no by spending it on expense plans

      YYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN.
Plenty of low cost phone service.
Thankfully a capitalist market allows CONSUMERS TO DECIDE instead of tree huggers crying about mean old businesses!
GET A CLUE….its not a duopoly so stop acting like you know what you are talking about.

And when Verizon an at$t own the spectrum there goes cheap prepaid plans as well.

Dude…stop trolling. It is practically a duopoly if you include TMobile with AT&T…that would mean that 2 companies own 84 % of the mobile market…what part of INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS are you missing ? Oh…sorry..the part where REALITY kicks in.

what the FTW are you talking about. Most of the time I would agree with you about Franken, he’s a weenie. But on this subject, he’s absolutely right….what the hell progress are you talking about ? The degradation of our mobile services down to that of AT&T ? People who treat you with disdain and apathy?
Look……get a point of your own, make it with substantive information to back up your points, and THEN people will take you seriously.

The merger of AT&T and TMobile will be BAD for the industry and the american public at large…period.

Big government must protect the consumer form big corporations. That’s why we have government… collectively to serve the public. Today republicans and many democrats are slaves of corporations ONLY progressives and left wing politicians like Dennis Kusenich, All Franken and Bernie Sanders care about consumers…  without government regulations you would still have one monopoly Bell System as your phone company… and guess how much you would be paying?

How the heck did ATT get back into this fray? The DOJ broke them up once before, when cell phones were a distant dream in Science Fiction movies. They are the worst in nearly every category, especially customer service. Apple should take over T-MOBILE, then charge ATT to use their spectrum.

People there are still many choices out there! ! Me da only reason I have an infuse 4g with att is cuz att works in Mexico. I had Verizon, sprint a thunderbolt on Verizon and an evo 4g on sprint I liked both services only thing I didn’t like was that they didn’t work in Mexico they only worked in Tijuana and ensenada. Once I went deeper to mexico to michoacan and Mexico city they both didn’t work half of da time I was pissed off cuz I had activated international roaming on both of them nd da lady at da store said they wud work well they didn’t work half of da time I had no service. Switched to att got an infuse now everytime I go to Mexico it roams on telcel Mexico and I get much better service everywhere I go I have service were da Verizon nd sprint phone didn’t work also I get 3g/4g cuz my phone always has an H+ icon even tho its roaming . So yea I’m happy wit att cuz my job requires me to go to Mexico a lot nd its a good feeling being able to stay connected everywhere I go. I wud of switched to T-Mobile cuz I heard it also works in Mexico da only reason I didn’t was cuz T-Mobile only gets edge in Mexico. I agree with u 100% Nicole, some people gotta calm down if they don’t like how things are going why are they still with t-mobile? I’m pretty sure there are other choices available were they live.. they dnt have to go with at&t but I’m sure more choices are available .. anyways I’m happy ur happy with at&t. I’m also an at&t customer and happy cuz I go to Argentina a lot and at&t also works and I also get 3G even tho I’m roaming. T-mobile on the other hand only gets crappy edge lol. I guess its true what they say about at&t in the commercials that they have the best international coverage lol cuz they do! That’s why I’m sticking with them..

      • Realcool2000

Its great that you two are so happy because you receive coverage where you need it, but you are both missing the actual issue. The issue being observed is that when two companies or less, control an industry that is very large, very influential and makes vast amounts of money, then peoples rights tend to suffer.

When the company involved that is most likely to gain control is one that has a history of taking advantage of consumers ( that means you ), then it is more than likely they will continue with their trend of doing so.

People are happy or not happy with their services through one or another carrier and that is irrelevant to the real issue., which is that a company that is known for not caring about consumers and manufacturers is about to be the biggest access point in an industry that influences and controls communications.

Other issues are that there are anti trust laws that have been written to keep this kind of thing from happening. Question being raised here is that if there are laws then why arent they being observed? When this kind of thing happens, again, the peoples rights are cast aside.

Another large issue is that the innovation produced in the last 3 years due to cell phone company and manufacture competition is incredible….you like your I phone or android phone …thats great…well think about this..if there was no competition driving the innovations then manufacturers and carriers would be content just to sell the same old boring phones and services at the same old speeds ( and FYI when theres  no need to innovate and theres no competition then the pricing set for these features will be and has been very high and unnecessarily taxing to the consumer, again thats you )

Also, innovation that comes out of these situations goes over to other industries and fields such as aerospace and medical and automotive, etc. Really…. stopping innovation is to slow the acceleration of all of these areas, which is to slow down our technological acceleration as a country, and as a people.

So the scenario is set to give a company ( that has abused power in the past ) the power to take advantage of the communication industry, its customers and its manufacturers.

These are some of the REAL ISSUES at hand.

You say you are tired of people complaining or saying that they dont want the merger/takeover/sellout to happen and you are happy with your situation and happy with what you think will happen after a duopoly is formed.

Well, its just the same as children saying they are happy with their barbie doll and they dont care that the company making it dumps raw sewage into their own water that they drink. You dont know the real issues or care about them. You just want what u want and dont care how you get it or how you get affects others.

Im sure you and many others dont care or dont understand, but the issues involved here are important and much bigger than whos phone is faster or where someone does or doesnt get service.

      • Realcool2000

      • Unbearablepleasures

Your totally missing the point of the debate. It has nothing to do with who has better service. This issue has to do with the lack of competition in the wireless industry. America’s economy is based on capitalism. In capitalism more competition in a given industry helps to promote better prices for the consumer and also helps to push companies to innovate and so that they can then stand out with placed side by side with the competition. The debate of the merger has NOTHING to do with what company provides better service.

Exactly! Finally someone that understands!! People are always bitching! They never happy so if they don’t like the way things are going right now with t-mobile, why are they still with t-mobile?? All they do is bitch like lil gurls. It used to be funny at first but now its just annoying btw I have boost mobile I admit its service its crap! But u don’t hear me bitching. And I know a lot of people will get mad at me but u guys know its true. I come on here every single day because I had plans of switching to T-Mobile but godam every single comment is something like ” I don’t want this merger to go tru” or something like ‘” at&t sucks ” .. like cmon seriously grow up. U don’t like what’s going on make the dam switch. Btw I will be going to at&t now, screw t-mobile..

Idk dude she said she’s happy wit att cuz she likes da service, but she also said if PEOPLE are not happy wit there provider then they shud stop there bitching like u and switch. Like that other gurl said there are many choices out there. Btw Mexico is not stupid. Ur just ignorant if u think Mexico is stupid. But anyway getting back to topic like they both said ur not happy make da dam switch already and quit ur bitching . There’s something out there that has to suit ur needs.

If you were smart enough you should have looked up cell providers in mexico and realized telcel broadcasts on 850 / 1900. The ONLY choice would have been att. Your handset has to support it too… LOL

Yes smartazz I think what she meant was only at&t gets 3G in Mexico. I have T-Mobile and have also roamed on telcel successfully on mexico in my g2x because it also supports those bands but guess what? I get a big ass E icon next to the signal bars. So it sucks I only get edge. My friend on the other hand in her at&t blackberry torch also roaming on telcel has a big ’3G” icon next to the signal bars.

AT&T provided the technology for Bush administration to illegally tap into their network without any warrent and listen to any conversation. Unconstitutional act was never punished and it is never been made clear if AT&T  still allows these practices. What do you think will happen if you as a T-Mobile customer become part of the AT&T network. Prices will go up…. customer service will suck and you will have a visit from gestapo if you make any comments that tea party patriot do not like.

T mobiles response by saying beyer quality service and reduced costs…….uh yeah for you guys, not us! Like most I only see our costs rising and the quality of service sucking! I agree with sen. Franklin, competition drives down prices, a monopoly does not. When t mobile lowered their data plans, everyone followed. I also agree with verizon in saying that ATT does not want to take to time to build their own network up

  • MT3GS

If this was like Europe, where there is a standard a bunch of companies follow and its easy to switch providers, then i would be absolutely down with it, one company merging with another wouldnt make a difference, but when youre talking about a monopoly of GSM service thN it really starts to piss me off! I need my phone to work as soon as i am wheels down in europe, brazil or everywhere else i go. God help the poor suckers that come to the us to roam from overseas and get infected by at&ts crappy roaming rates “just cause they can” droids and evos are useless to me unless they have UNLOCKED gsm radios, and anybody thats seen Sprints and VZWs selection of global phones knows they suck (except for the droid 3 thT has a locked gsm radio for us frequencies)

Wireless in the us sucks more than ever nowadays, CDMA and WiMax can die for all im concerned.

    T-Mobile just being wrong again!!

  • Demig0d1

It would make the most sense to have one series of companies who makes and leases towers and another set that supplies airtime to consumers. It would keep the consumer market set up to encourage competition while allowing the engineering market built to innovate and coordinate. Then this type of merger wouldnt be such a bad idea. With things like they are its impossible to have a company build up to provide competition in the normal way. Its worse then the Bell’s of telecom past.

Is it that you don’t won’t to or your just being CHEAP and GREEDY !!!  We know you got the moeny so use it to better you netwrok !! Sprint isn’t dispatching engineers to your cell sites for nothing… AT&T sucks !! T-Mobile is turely pure competiton…

    • MrBonez

I agree, if at&t would spend the money on fixing and upgrading their crappy service for their customers then we wouldn’t have to worry about our great T-Mobile service getting screwed up if this deal goes through. Down with the “merger”!!

All of your comments are stupid, isn’t it obvious that Senators know everything.  Hell, they can even predict the future.  Al Franken says the merger will kill competition.  How, he knows what may happen in the future is pure speculation.
Wow, if he is so smart wouldn’t you think they would see the 14 trillion ($14025215218708.52) debt coming?   Congress is a joke.  T-Mobile will get billions paid to them from ATT if this doesn’t go through.  Congress is all about lining their pockets with money and they sure will get rich of this one.  Either get rich by supporting and getting paid by Sprint and others or ATT later.  ATT has the deep pockets and a lot to lose so they will when.  Money always wins.

It is a joke that this clown was elected to the senate. So if you buy into what he says you local mental health professional needs to see you, STAT! AT&T needs all the help they can get!

Al Franken is one of the most perceptive, no BS minds in the senate. He’s actually looking out for us, not denying capitalism or whatever you think is going on.

    • MrBonez

Your a complete moron Jason and you must obviously be working for at&t to be making a comment like this. I hope that at&t gets put in their place and ISN’T allowed to acquire T-Mobile so that us consumers aren’t screwed over in the end!

I was with AT&T for one year, then I went to T-Mobile and have been with them for nearly 10 years.  AT&T had terrible customer service and greedy roaming charges!  I am appalled to see that T-Mobile is selling out to AT&T, I will probably go to Verizon.

Senater Franken is correct, there will only be AT&T and Verizon, a duopoly is what it will be, and yes, just like the gas giants did, they will coordinate their prices to the detriment of us consumers.  They wont be able to resist, there is just too much greed in our society for them to not do this.

I don’t normally support Sen. Franken’s views, but he is right-on regarding the pending possible T-Mobile merger with AT&T. AT&T is already a bully and they would become more so in the marketplace. The very idea that they are running commercials depicting the two companies already merged is outrageous. The fact that the FCC put the merger on the back burner so that AT&T could regroup and come up with more-believable lies is also outrageous. Our legislators broke up AT&T into baby-bells decades ago for a reason.

As someone that’s from Minnesota, I totally hate Franken, as he’s extremely liberal.

However, in this situation, I agree with Franken.
