TmoNews Reviews The T-Mobile G2x

When I finally got my hands on a T-Mobile G2x review unit from T-Mobile, my first thought was one of fear about how my time with the handset would go based on some of the current discussions surrounding the device. As it turns out, my experience didn’t suffer from many of the troubles that have plagued G2x users from the start. T-Mobile’s first dual-core phone expectations for the G2x were high and the phone doesn’t disappoint. The unfortunate part of my G2x review is that my thoughts and experiences were somewhat tainted out of concerns that the phone would freeze, reboot or suffer from some kind of malfunction. With none of that taking place, let’s dive right in.

Specifications:

  • 4″ LCD screen
  • Android 2.2.2
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • 1.3 megapixel front facing camera
  • 4G HSPA+ 14.4Mbps capable
  • 1 Ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor
  • 1080p video recording

Pros:

  • Fast 4G data speed
  • Dual-core processor means fast
  • 8 megapixel camera takes good photos
  • Strong signal strength
  • HDMI output

Cons:

  • Reported to suffer from reboots and freezes
  • Box shape design not always comfortable to hold
  • LCD screen not up to par with alternative Android models
  • No distinguishing features outside of dual-core processor
  • Screen resolution could be higher

Hardware:

The G2x hardware is a mixed bag as far as my own personal usage, but from talking to readers the form factor is clearly personal preference. I’m a big fan of a rounded design as I feel that form fits a bit more to the contour of my hand so the box design of the G2x wasn’t my favorite. That being said, the build quality of the phone didn’t leave me concerned. I wouldn’t say it’s the sturdiest device around but I didn’t have any concerns it would fall apart in my hand.

There are only three tactile buttons on the device, the volume rockers (up and down) on the right-hand side of the device and the power button on top. The front of the device shows the standard Android layout of Menu, Power, Back and Search capacitive touch buttons. The top of the device next to the home button also belongs to the HDMI port for those moments when you just want to display something on the big screen TV.

I feel compelled to throw this in as I simultaneously write the Sensation 4G review and say that in terms of hardware, form factor between the devices is absolutely personal choice. The two devices distinguish themselves quite well based on screen size and physical hardware shape so it’s definitely a try before you buy deal. At the end of the day, your choice will come down to as much size as it does Vanilla Android versus Sense 3.0.

The G2x screen isn’t going to win any awards but it’s certainly not going to torture you either. I wouldn’t begin to compare to Super AMOLED or Retina Display but it can hold its own. However, just fuggadaboutit in sunlight. We wouldn’t have any problem with a slightly higher resolution screen that might make better use of the G2x’s excellent media capabilities. The 4″ IPS display maintains an 800 x 480 resolution and it definitely works better on paper than it does in the real world. We don’t expect anyone to be disappointed with the display but, as we said, if you put the G2x up against a Super AMOLED or Retina Display, you’ll feel instantly jealous.

The matte soft-touch back feels great in the hand and the device definitely wouldn’t be considered heavy. The bottom of the device takes a design cue from the iPhone and places the charging port between the speaker and the microphone.  Perhaps this was just on our own unit but light presses on the touchscreen didn’t seem to register, quickly leading us to believe the touchscreen is slightly less sensitive than other Android models.

The one place where the G2x truly shines is under the hood. This phone has plenty of horsepower. Nvidia’s 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor partnered with 512MB of RAM and this phone comes ready to play. The G2x certainly feels fast and we didn’t experience any noticeable slowdowns when running multiple applications.

Software:

Vanilla Android fans will find a lot to love about the G2x with Android 2.2 Froyo paired with the dual-core processor as the G2x is blazing fast. Opening and closing applications happens without delay along with the overall feel of the device is just…fast. T-Mobile added in a few of its own applications but, by and large, this phone is bloatware free. No skin or UI customizations here and that’s exactly what some of you want. Others will prefer the extra customizations allowed by devices like the Sensation 4G and Sense 3.0.

The G2x is running Android 2.2.2 and while T-Mobile has promised Gingerbread quite a few times, we’re still unsure exactly when that will happen at the time of this writing. In the meantime, the G2x’s plain vanilla Android comes stocked with Need for Speed Shift, a Gameloft Nova Demo, T-Mobile TV, TegraZone games, Qik Video Chat and Zinio reader. T-Mobile also includes both Swype as a keyboard option and the Wi-Fi calling app for piggybacking on a Wi-Fi connection for voice calls. The phone doesn’t feel cluttered and, while T-Mobile included some of their own apps such as their My Account and App Pack applications, there definitely is nothing here that makes you feel like the phone is inundated with bloatware. This phone will be an easy transition for owners of previously stock Android devices such as either the Nexus/Nexus S or the T-Mobile G2.

So we know the hardware performs well with the Tegra 2 dual-core processor but how about its impact on software? The G2x feels snappy and, just like our comments on the hardware, the phone runs without any noticeable slowdowns. On a day-to-day performance aspect, you’d be hard pressed to notice any differences between a single-core and dual-core processors until you start launching multiple apps, games or playing around with benchmarking apps. That being said, the opening of applications is still noticeably faster on the G2x especially when you already have an application running in the background.

The G2x really showed its power on the Quadrant tests with scores that were averaging right around the 2400 range, easily besting the Nexus S and DROID X by over a 1000 points. Even the Sensation 4G came in a little lower at around 1900. One thing is for certain. When the G2x finally receive its Gingerbread update, this phone should fly.

Media and Camera:

The G2x shines when it comes to media playback especially with the Tegra 2 chipset allowing for HDMI mirroring on an HDTV. Everything you can see on the phone’s screen can be thrown up on your HDTV and you can enjoy the fun with the whole family. The G2x comes with 5.4 GBs of memory along with a Micro-SD slot under the back cover which perfectly accepted our 16GB card.

Videos on the phone played beautifully especially the perfectly rendered original Transformers movie included out of the box. 1080p was a little choppy, especially playing back on the computer. Scaling the video down to recording at 720p made the world a better place and they played back without a problem.

The G2x has an 8 megapixel camera and the images are ok, decent but not wonderful. As you can see in the sample photos, the colors look a little washed and while I’m by no means a professional photographer, I wasn’t terribly impressed by the quality of the images. Low-light pictures were grainy and disappointing as the phone tended to work up its ISO to avoid any blurring. The 1.3 megapixel camera on the front worked nicely although we only tried one Qik video chat call and it was just a few moments long. We’ll reserve judgment on the front facing camera until we can get our hands on Google video chat that comes with Gingerbread. You can see a bunch of shots we took inside and outside using the G2x in the gallery at the end of the post!

Phone and Coverage:

One area that I had absolutely no problems with were phone calls and the G2x held a strong and constant 4G signal in the Palm Beach/Broward county areas of South Florida. The phone had plenty of volume in the earpiece which is always something I look for along with the speakerphone being quite loud as well.

Wi-Fi calling worked flawlessly as I expect from the folks at Kineto Wireless and, while I didn’t need the signal improvement, I still enjoy having a fall back option for bad coverage areas.

Conclusions:

My first impressions of the G2x at CES in January was a “wow” factor and that didn’t go away as I spent a little under two weeks with the phone. The Galaxy S 4G and Sensation 4G’s have better displays but you accept a tradeoff with both of those devices. With the G2x you’ll get a plain vanilla Android experience against Sense 3.0 on the Sensation and Touchwiz on the Galaxy S 4G. The Galaxy S 4G also brings faster HSPA+ speeds of 21Mbps against the G2x’s 14.4Mbps and that difference can be noticeable in the real world. The G2x is a great balance of quality hardware, speed, power and plain vanilla Android. If we could make one significant change to the G2x, it would be an increase to the screen resolution to give some ability to see the phone in direct sunlight, a necessary evil for us in South Florida.

The biggest problem with the G2x is the amount of hiccups that have been caused by a bad launch experience, with a large swath of users plagued by various software troubles. I tried to be completely objective during this review but it was hard knowing in the back of my head all the troubles I’ve been reading about from TmoNews readers.

Still, I truly enjoyed my time with the G2x as I didn’t experience one problem with the device and I would not hesitate to recommend it post-Gingerbread. As it stands now, the phone is a great product but the current problems make it hard to give it a stamp of approval. With that being said, the G2x has a lot going for it and as soon as the phone gets an update to solve all of the lingering problems, it’ll remain one of T-Mobile’s best offerings.

Good Job. I hope you get to do more reviews like this in the future.

  • I, too, rarely encountered the bugs most users claim to suffer from. As for now, I’m running the 2.3.4-based CM7 nightlies and loving it. Are there some things that need work? Yes. The battery meter is still a bit inaccurate and the GPS is way slower getting a lock than my Nexus One. But overall, it’s a fantastic device. The Sensation 4G is dead in the water to me for Sense + locked bootloader + actually printing “with Sense” on the back of the device. No.

your nexus one says with google on it..

      • Good, that’s what I want it to say.

        • DREW J

          lol ok.. big difference there..

        • Zifnab2k

There is. With Google implies that it is a Vanilla Android device. With Sense implies that it has a gross HTC Sense UI f’n up the phone.

        • DREW J

Lol oh ok , cause your opinion is a fact right? I think vanilia android sucks and sense polishes it up quite nice. Ill take the lack of ram any day for sense over vanilia.. Fyi 80% of people domt root or know what rooting is and would rather have the features of sense over vanilia.

I actually like unique back designs and the G2x and the HTC G2 have the two coolest backs of any phones out there in my opinion. The back of the g2x with the strip and the “8M” looks gorgeous

    • Actually.  The issues you are having are bugs from CM7 being a beta rom.  None of those issues on my stock

      • Jeff Fuentes

How is a stock version of gingerbread better than CM7? I can do more with CM7 and its stock(AOSP) with added features and customizations

    • Zifnab2k

Sense boot loader is going to be unlocked soon according to response from HTC after their “We will not be locking boot loaders” announcement. As for the “with Sense” logo, you cover that with a case!

I wanted to buy another one. But, the guy at the T-Mo store said he had 20 devices he couldn’t sell in the back because T-Mo put a freeze on them.

Makes me want to switch carriers.

    • Bassplaye555

Makes you want to switch carriers because they hold on to them for a fix in the near future…? I was in Canada during the time the BB storm was launched. Rogers wireless pulled then off the shelves due to too many problems, while verizon was still selling them like crazy. Id rather wait for a proper working model instead of getting it now and having a headache. Seems like a better customer experience to me

Sorry it took me so long to get back… bought the phones from another carrier, then went on a camping trip…

I have a G2x, I wanted another one… that works, like the first one I got. I go to a store, that has 20 of them in the back, but won’t sell me one, because the ones they have are broken… or people have ones that are broken, or something also ridiculous.

I want to switch to a carrier that doesn’t stock defective phones.

        • Zifnab2k

Lol, they didn’t stock faulty phones on purpose. LG sent them over that way. I assure you the managers at T-Mobile have no desire to have faulty phones in their stock. It causes huge return rates that cost the store money and looks bad to corporate. Just be happy they held them instead of handing you a bleeding screen or worst.

This was a great review..  i already have the phone but i would buy it  if i didnt.  How far in advance do you get the phones for review?  I wish this would have been out 2 weeks prior to the phone coming out.

  • The Retina Display is an IPS LCD display although not comparable in the resolution department the colours definitely should be similar especially since LG did manufacture both IPS LCD display on the G2x and the iPhone 4.

Did the phone suffer connection issues once inside a building? My phone can’t seem to grab a connection but i am not about to return my phone for a refurbished one.

    • Zifnab2k

That’s a T-Mobile thing. Building penetration has always been pretty poor. That’s not a qualifier for a return imo.

    • No 14.4.

    • Zifnab2k

Only Samsung is rocking those right now. Either way, I don’t think i’ve met anyone getting 14.4 or 21.1 even in areas that claim to run 42.2. If you’re getting over an 8, you should be ecstatic because your’e exceeding most of the population’s mobile speeds. Only Verizon in a 4g LTE area compares, but then you have to deal with the batteries draining faster. That said, a 800 mile trip up the east coast proved that T-mobile’s coverage is still pretty drab. I spent 80% of my time on 2g or G.

  • g1andonly

Hey how bout you compare the two screens together and you’ll see a difference in color, try watching Charlie the unicorn 2 and then write your review of screens. Super amoled is not as colorful as the g2x, I’ve compared

    • More Saturated but not as bright or color accurate as the G2x.

    • Zifnab2k

Yea but Super AMOLED doesn’t bleed on the edges! I’m sure the IPS would be wonderful if they could QA the damn thing. So far I haven’t seen one.

Because we don’t get review phones right away, our focus is news with a speciality in links. Also, the phone has only been out a month and 8 days, so please don’t say it’s been two months.

    • Scarf22

It is 2 months because if you read “EVERY other gadget blog”, you would know this was pulled from sales for a period of time due to software issues, which have been fixed apparently.  Now an accurate review can be done. Really?? Gadget blog??? funny

Oh yeah, i forgot to add that David said he finally got his  hands on a review unit from T-mobile so that is another reason why it took 2 months….first sentence of the review on this “gadget blog”.

    • Why is it a big deal? I’m sorry we don’t get review phones as fast as other websites, instead we focus bringing you news first, reviews second.

      • bobo

you’re right David it’s tmonews not tmoreviews

        • Exactly, I don’t post reviews for pageviews here, they aren’t my most popular posts and I do them because a lot of people enjoy reading them but reviews aren’t a big priority for us. We’d love to do more, and do them early but we aren’t at that point in our relationship with T-Mobile to get devices before they launch every time.

  • I personally think your take on the screen is considerably wrong. I came from the N1 and I can say the IPS screen is absolutely gorgeous comparatively. Sure, it’s no retina display or Super AMOLED, but even compared to my N1’s AMOLED this screen whoops that @$$. And in daylight it’s 100x more readable than my N1 ever was and one of the things I’m enjoying most about it – I can still see every detail of the screen while, say, in my car wearing sun glasses whereas w/ the N1 it was always a struggle

Interesting I saw a comparison on youtube that some guy did between the G2x screen and the Galaxy S 4g and he said he liked the G2x screen better because he said the colors are truer. I really don’t have a preference…I mean the Galaxy S phones have beautiful, colorful screens. The Sensation’s screen has slightly duller colors but pictures and text look very crisp. The G2x is sort of a combination of the Super Amoled and the QHD screens in a way, it is bright and crisp but not as colorful as the Galaxy S and not as pristine looking as the Sensation. It’s all subjective and there are people who have said the G2x’s screen is among the best they have seen. Personally I rank them like this: 1) Samsung Galaxy S2 2) Iphone 4 3) HTC Sensation 4) LG G2x 5) Mytouch 4g….all of them are beautiful though and all within a hair of eachother in terms of quality

    • The ATL Guy

“whoops that @$$” we need more lines like that in phone reviews.
      ;)

    • Zifnab2k

When did you buy the Nexus One? Before Samsung pulled their displays, or after? That makes a huge difference. I’ll admit the colors were more realistic on the g2x, but the screen bleeding is pretty bad. Despite popular commenting, my OCD allowed me to notice the bleeding even in well lit rooms, not just in dark room on a black screen.

I love the G2x. I am still in my 30 days so I could exchange it for the sensation but to be honest I think I prefer the G2x, it seemes faster and has less lag and I like vanilla android. Luckily I have had no reboot issues and screen bleed is very minimal on mine.

  • Kitpogi

The camera on this phone is slow on taking pics. And I was able to sell mine for $400.00 because I’ve returned and exchanged it twice and still reboots randomly. I read some forums that LG was going to send and OTA update to fix this issue. I ain’t about to what a life time for that. Too bad, I actually like this device due to its speedy processor, just not as sexy and smooth as my new HTC Sensation.

  • Technically there is a very simple way to fix the rebooting/freezing but it kinda defeats the purpose of owning a smartphone.  If you drain the battery fully,,,, then charge it completely and do a factory reset it fixes a problem with the battery getting hot and draining and the overheating making the phone freze up (kinda, but not completely).  Then you’ll wanna root and remove qik video and not install any third party apps.  Looks like a lot of the problems are due to the kernel, but the apps that aren’t yet compatible with tegra 2 cause issues and the phone itself freezes when the cpu is idle and an app attempts to do anything.  So freezing qik and not installing any apps eliminates that.

    • Bobblehead

      This is not a fix.

  • Lothinator

Reading your comments about the screen makes me wish I’d never bought my Samsung Vibrant. I remember what screens looked like BEFORE and I know I’ll never be able to GO BACK. I guess I’m just stuck waiting for either TMO or Sprint (I’m willing to switch) to release the SGS II or something better, so I don’t have to give up SuperAMOLED.

  • I love my G2X. I have had more problems with my many blackberrys and Vibrant than this phone.

I am a happy G2X owner and I can say the screen on my G2X is better then the GS4G my friend owns. At least in his and my opinion. I would not trade my phone for the sensation even when offered, but I am hoping the update will roll out soon so people quit bashing this phone and it gets the respect it deserves.

Uhm, i’m sorry but you can piss right off. I lived in South Florida for the first 24 years of my life and assure you I could easily run circles around you in any academic or professional setting. First off, if we’re going to be grammar Nazis on a tech blog, your gramar and punctuation abilities are quite indicative of someone that doesn’t know their ass from their elbow. If you’re concerned with ethics, please do not offend the entire southern half of a state that is primarily populated by people from New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Michigan.

Yep, the reasoning behind the two grills is just to maintain a nice symmetrical look. Just like the iPhone 4 it has just the one speaker. I personally only use my phones speaker for the occasional game and notifications. Why anyone would use a phone speaker for anything more I just find silly.

When this phone works properly, it is the best phone in the u.s. Too most of us received bad units. Tmobile perhaps has the 2 best phones in the u.s. however they blewa big opportunity not marketing any of them, smh.

Like others, I would also have to disagree with the review of the screen. The colors on this screen are beautiful and better than ip4. So is the brightness. idk if its better than the retna but its certainly top notch. I think the camera takes great pics and video.

the 1080p playback on my computer was choppy as well. However it was beautiful on an hdtv. I agree with someone above who says the camera is slow at taking pics. Lastly I agree with the review that there is not 1 particular feature that stands out over anything else…except for those who love stock like me. Overall a great phone when working properly

    • Zifnab2k

I couldn’t even notice if the colors on the display looked good, all I saw was the spot lights shining out of the edges in various spots, depending on the unit I was getting ready to return.

So what, some people might value Davids opinion over others. And who made you the official review monitor?

        • J. Williams

Please go away with the childish comments, find some business.

        • Auser72

Nothing childish about pointing out the irrelevance of you mentioning the fact that there are other reviews of this phone. This is a fairly new phone with a good about of people still interested in this phone. And I chose to make your comment my business and if you have a problem with that you shouldn’t make comments in a public forum.

        • Dude seriously? You of all people who spend plenty of time around here should know better that we don’t get review devices right away. I’m incredibly disappointed that you felt the need to comment on that especially when you enjoy a privilege most don’t get to enjoy on this site, an inside line to me via email. You don’t like the review, don’t read it, but don’t criticize either. I’m posting the Sensation 4G review Monday, a number of sites posted them this past week. I’ll be prepared for your comment again.

        • J. Williams

You’re kidding right? Lol. You guys are crazy. I’m supposed to be happy about your email address? Lol you will be ok.

        • I expect that people who frequent this site understand that our reviews are often timed a little later than most because of the timeframe with which we receive review phones. I have that expectation and that you will appreciate the time and work that goes into it. You don’t think people enjoy reading a review even if its a month or two late? Especially a high-profile phone.

        • E_suavo

Yeah! If you don’t agree, then get the heck out of here! This site isn’t about honest discussion, it’s about getting free stuff. If you have an opinion that isn’t conductive to David getting free stuff, then just go away!!

Also, don’t question David. The David giveth, and the David taketh away. A review, even a late one, is so obviously unbiased and fair that you can only be a huge jackass if you disagree. So don’t be a jackass, and listen to David, because he has absolutely *no* ulterior motives.

        • Zifnab2k

          lol

        • J. Williams

          LOL…LOL

        • What exactly do you find funny in that? What exactly is “free” about what I did? Getting a review phone to try for 2 weeks isn’t free.

        • J. Williams

My goodness David. Why are you so upset? I am laughing because it does appear that if someone doesn’t agree with what you put on here, you get offended. That other person typed that, and I think it’s funny.

Look at how this all came about. A simple comment, and it gets blow way out of perportion. Its not that deep. people like your site, I like your site. But you should not attack people directly like that because you don’t like what they are saying. Leave that to the guys that stop by just to bash, and then remove their comment. I see several people on this thread stating they feel it’s a little late, but it’s just that. A statement, and that is it. Why turn it into something it’s not huh? A know you are the CEO, but I don’t have agree with nor like everything that is posted. Furthermore, my original comment was not rude at all. All I said was it was a little late. Then all these other people silly rude comments to me, and you try to come at me! That’s funny. Again. Your site is cool, and I unlike some people in here buy nearly every phone they bring out. I do YouTube videos which you have seen, and posted in your threads. So why be sour about it? I feel some things are blown up tok much, by these otter guys can come in here and bash away….it’s funny.

        • You go away you made the dumb comment….and now since no one is agreeing with you….you got attitude. Go cry to your mother or someone else who cares about a cry baby. If you had business you would not have made a dumb comment. Now live with it.

Not really. A lot of people are thinking about getting this phone and will read this to consider whether they want it or not.

    • Speak for yourself……from my point of view……Perhaps you were a little to early to make a purchase. Just think if  it were a car would you buy it as soon as it came out or would you wait a year and let them work out the bugs? So now because it is a phone it is okay to run out and buy it unproven? That is dumb.

  • Ok so I’ve had this phone for over a month now and I must say I really do enjoy it, sure there are some bugs but nothing that has kept me from fully enjoying this device. This phone not having Gingerbread is not such a big ass deal to me, The only issue I’ve had with this phone is the touch sensitivity is kinda weak, i have to double tap or even triple tap sometimes but that’s about it. This phone is really fast, powerful and handles anything I throw at it. I came from the Mytouch 3g so yeah it’s a huge transition. Overall I’m very happy with this phone, the camera is amazing, speed and the sleek look, DAMN I love this phone!!! People taking crap on LG and this phone for not having Gingerbread are sore losers. Buy this phone if you want, don’t let others keep you away from this bad ass device.

You assholes cant admit that these phones were defective on a national level. Oh your phone didn’t automatically reboot. Well everyone elses did. How about an apology. fucking prick. selfish
this is why i left tmobile. I think T mobile needs to slow down on their phones and fix the ones that are defective
This was a recall G2x in that it kept shutting off, but noone at T Mobile USA wanted to admit their ahead of the competition phone was a duzy. Guess what T Mobile. Your ethics speak for themselves. Greed. Target all the immigrants take advantage of them trying to be american. put fancy looking phones in their pockets. Your phones don’t work. Bottom line.
Slow down and make efficient 4g high speed phones.
Come on T MO News I am highly dissappointed. Extremely dissapointed. Why can’t you admit that the G2x had serious problems and that the reason it was out of stock is that powering issue. Fuckheads. WHy cant you admit when there is a nationwide problem going on. Because you are afraid it will hurt your image. What is worse acting like oh its just a few handful, or acknowleding that your phones don’t work and recall
Complete liars. You  T Mobile don’t care about people. You care about T Mobile USA image and getting people to buy your service, at whatever cost.

if you have tmobile and you had a G2x affected by the powering off issue email me at
    christovercame@aol.com G2x subject

I admit, I was looking foward to using all the features on the G2X, cool sounding
and cool looking phone. powering off automatically completely made the phone unusable. not one person at tmobile store customer service technicians customer loyalty department would admit this

  • Bought a dealer unit pre launch Zero problems still  . Feel for those who got a bad batch since the hype was so high on this phone . If price non contract came down to 300.00 this would sell with fixes in place and Gingerbread installed. There is still time…

  • Christovercame

The reason the G2X has been out of stock is the powering off issue that everyone of them experienced.
T Mobile kept this hidden by not doing a nationwide recall and lamely saying they are going to send your phone software to fix it. I am sure the new batch being released don’t have the powering off issue and gingerbread will soon be available for it.
Sucks that you had to find out on your own this $600 phone had a crazy internal defect automatically powering off etc, sucks especially if you bought it on Ebay or similar site. TMobile could have admitted the problem and apologized to the people who gave them a right to be in this country, the customer, but they didn’t. T Mobile choose to let you the customer findout on your own (after they possibly knew the issue was applicable to every G2x potentially) to this day no apology has been publicized.

    • Now that is a flat out lie. EVERYONE is not having YOUR issues. You suck for generalizing. There is no, nor has there been a NationWide RECALL of this phone. The phone has remained steadily available through several sites.  T mob did not stock it but they are not the only supplier of this phone. YOUR knowledge and your experience is limited to YOU. There is a whole world out there that knows nor care nothing about your myopic views.

      • Mastrorj

UR RIGHT! there is a whole world out there—- speaking of the other sid of the world – i was on a droid site the sec this phone came out and i had it in my hands – i too was having this issue – I read a post that was over a month prior to the G2x’s release date and someone from Europe had said” man i hope that tmobile or LG or who ever gets all these issues fixed before this phone is released in the states in a month or so from now – im tired of rebooting my phone every 10 min”  – SO I  call  BS on tmobile and LG for know this phone had problems in Europe and yet they still went ahead and released this phone bc they dont care! They cherry picked phones that worked fine to give to review web sites so eveything looked fine – how do i know bc well dont u think its odd that not one reviewer had that problem with this phone yet it seems like every 4-5 people i talk to have this issue –

  • Christovercame

the Author David you are a duche bag for acting like the G2x powering off issue was only to a select few. Do your research. I am sure every T MObile employee and T Mobile customer, not including you, had an issue with the G2x powering off.
Your language is offensive when you said only a handful had this issue and your wording implied that only a few were effected. Shallow to not be able to admit a problem, when more than several G2X were effected in not all (except yours) I hope you enjoy your G2x and if at anytime when you realize your g2x is automatically powering off, feel free to let the world of T Mo News know (the truth). Please don’t promote a faulty product. hopefully uou fix the nationwide issue. On a serious level. Your a duchebag (with lots of $$$$$$$)

Posting under a different name doesn’t make you any smarter for this ridiculous tirade of foolishness. Why should David apologize? He gave his thoughts based on His experience. And furthermore, how do you expect him to fix the issue with the phone? Did he make it? Did he send out some mass virus that corrupted yours? Most importantly: DOES HE OWN OR EVEN WORK AT TMOBILE?
If the answer is “no”, then you should sit back and shut up.

      • G18industries

haha,  you guys are all so stupid,  the LG is a great phone!  yes it has a few glitches.  Wait,  wasn’t it the first LG smart phone on the market?  what did you expect.  when I go buy a boat or a snowmobile, and it is the first model of its kind,  what do i expect?  issues!  but if they work to fix them,  I am ok.  If they fix them I love this phone,  if they don’t they are just like HTC.  HTC released the my touch 4g and the HTC HD2 to the public,  and both of those phones had more glitches then the LG.  Also neither of those 2 phones were the manufacturers first smart phone to the market.  Next time I suggest you wait if a new phone provider releases their first smart phone.

        • G18industries

    • CactusCat

Edible, you are incorrect. I have owned the G2x since early May and have not experienced a single flaw on the phone. Not even one reboot or powering off issue. And I have spoken with others in the XDA group who use the phone and none of them have experienced the issues either. So to make a statement like yours is nothing more than reckless and irresponsible since you cannot speak for anyone other than yourself. Yah, I’ve read the problems others have had, but it ultimately comes down to your own experiences and mine has been flawless so far. As with most things too, the only times you hear anything on a phone is when someone has a problem. When we don’t have problems, no one says anything as there’s nothing to talk about. That would explain why the only things you’ve read are negative. So here’s one for the positive side.

      • Zifnab2k

I hear ya on the “only negative people post reviews”. However, I personally opened 23 boxes and found that every single one has a bleeding screen. The random reboots doesn’t bother me as much, a root or an update will fix that. Faulty hardware can’t be fixed with an update. If you got one that doesn’t bleed, you won the lottery! If you do have bleed and you’re just accepting it, well then you’re a very complacent person, and i’m sure LG and T-Mobile applaud your acceptance.

    • Well the issue certainly is not EVERYONES problem you idiot. If he did not experience it then….then he did not experience it. It was his review about HIS experience not yours Moron.

    • Timman23

Yes I must agree, not everyone is experiecing those problems however I hope that Tmobile is addressing the issues a lot quicker. For the most part the phone is very good phone and powerful, and I how they can build upon that??  Correct and perserve a good product. But first things first!! Build it correctly and the customers will buy it!!

the Author David you are a duche bag for acting like the G2x powering off issue was only to a select few.

Edible? You can totally disagree with the author but do you need to get vicious by calling him a douche bag? C’mon, we all adultsin here…i hope.

    • How do you disagree with his perspective or call it wrong? It is his experience not yours or anyone else’s. I know people who love the phone and never had a problem. So you see it differently perhaps, but how do you criticize his experience. You were not there with him, using the phone he used, so what is your basis for contention?

  • Nice review.  What is that Nokia model in the photo?

  • Hey David, nice review, I was curious about your take on the G2x. When you say the device doesn’t have any distinguishing features outside of a dual core, I think you should have listed Vanilla Android instead. With so few devices running a stock Google experience when one comes along its a definite distinction in my book. You also said, “…extra customizations allowed… Sense 3.0” it soulnds like you’re saying Vanilla doesn’t allow extra customizations. I know, that you know, that Vanilla is just as customizable. Just about every ‘extra’ Sense offers can be achieved through Market apps, like launchers and Widgets.
Nice review though, and thanks for hounding TMO and LG about their terrible update communication.

  • Very nice review David, i too own a G2X and i am the lucky few who’s G2X is not buggy. Hoping you write another review for a future phone, maybe the Nokia N9 ;)

I guess I am one of the “blessed fortunate” as well, as I have had my G2x since the first day of release, and have had ZERO issues – no freezes, no reboots. The only minor issues is that occasionally I have to turn off and back on the Wi-fi, but that may be because of my network and not the phone. I’m a power user, I download and try a TON of different apps from the Market, and I use the Wi-fi hotspot feature quite a bit with my laptop. I also use an addon keyboard, Swiftkey X (which is awesome!).

Overall, a fantastic phone – at least for me.

Finally went into T-Mobile to compare the G2X in person to my recently purchased Sensation (and to their Sensation). I gotta say that the G2X has a better screen “appearance”… maybe because it’s only 4.00”? That’s all, just sharing.
Device looked great and impressed me, after all it’s problems I’ve read about.

Alright so I’ve had my sensation for a little over a week now, and just within the first couple days I experienced some sudden rebooting issue. Now today I it has seriously been lagging like a b#*%h. Almost threw the damn thing cause it was it making me so mad. Anyone else experiencing these problems??

    • kir

i’m loving mine. no rebooting or lag. i would try adw launcher. turning off auto sync might help too.

    • Anthonyjaustin94

yes my sensation reboot then say loading for about a min then wen it come on you have to reset the weather and internet connection but i have the g2x REFURBISHED and run perfect it lie the opposite lol

I would like a clue. Unfortunately, my bank does not cash TMO checks, so you may have to pay me by another method. Do you have any legit non-slush accounts? Anything that is not paid by ATT for services rendered? That would be most helpful. PS, your attempts to be clever are not so good. Why don’t you stick to writing paid opinions and leave witty banter to witty people?

When will we learn that ALL new phones have issues? Some more than others but not one is perfect out of the box.
We want everything on release day and then bitch about all of the issues and glitches. The G2X is a great phone that will have the issues fixed….it’s software related. It will get done, just not when we want it. The Sensation has the same issues that most HTC devices have….why are we shocked?
The ones that should piss you off are the issues that both the carrier and the manufacturer know about and do nothing to fix them. Remember MotoBlur? We called the Cliq a boomerang because it always came back after we sold it. That was a POS from the start.
I have had A LOT of new phones at launch and before launch and I am as bad as the next guy…I find every little thing that I don’t like and dwell on it, but then I get used to it. I have to remember that these are PHONES and what they do is remarkable. We are all so spoiled !
My wife’s Galaxy crapped out so while we  were waiting for the replacement,so she had to use my old MT 3G. WOW !!!!! that phone is slow as hell, laggy and the screen is terrible but I loved that phone ( probably the best I ever owned) when it was current. Now, I would be embarrassed to use it. I rocked that phone up till last year.
In our rush to have the latest and greatest, we have to ask ourselves, “is this phone the one, or just the next one”?
Carriers also need to slow down on releasing phones on a weekly basis.Give us a chance to get used to a phone before the “next one” comes out. They also shoot themselves in the foot here in California because we have a 30 day return policy and people use that as a test drive. Carriers only get a fraction of the phones cost credited back to them on non defective phones. Buyers remorse returns cost them a grip… but you know who ends up paying for it.

  • G2x could be a great phone if the issues were fixed. my friend has one which he has not had any. i still love my sensation better though, just waiting for root.

  • JB

The HTC Sensation does NOT have a better screen than the G2X! I work at T-Mobile and play with the phones constantly. I have the Sensation and the G2X side by side and have campared numerous pictures and videos and the G2X’s screen is superior over that of the Senstation. The Senstion has a good screen but it doesn’t compare to the G2X.

    • Zifnab2k

G2x screen might look better color-wise, but the HTC sensation doesn’t have light bleeding into the corners randomly on every device. It also has a higher pixel density, which was definitely noticeable. That said, I did notice the Sensation has quite a bit of yellowing, and it a bit more desaturated than the g2x. I guess after 2 years with a samsung display nothing will cut it.

      • RUcerious

I have the G2x and I don’t have any screen bleed, so your superlative comment of *every* device is inaccurate…

I bought a Sensation to replce my Nexus s about 2 weeks ago (love it) at the same time i got my wifey a G2x.. About a week ago it began to reset and shut off all by itself, randomly.. it has become consistent, happening about 4 or 5 times a day now. The phone is sick when it is working. Super fast, I almost brought my Sensation back for it.. But it is unusable now.. So it is going back tomorrow and i will get her a sensation. I understand new phones come with issues but constant reboots and general reliability is unacceptable.. Phones most basic funcntion is communication and you cant do that if when you need to use it . ITS OFF ! to bad cause when the phone works, its awesome !

    • Craibailey

When you say the phone is sick when working are you talking about the speed of the phone? Because I had both phones and I didn’t notice much of a difference in speed, so I guess I like the Sensation design.

  • Zifnab2k

Dave must have got lucky and received one of the “Good ones”. I wanted to love the phone, but the display leakage just nagged at me every time I turned the thing on. I had reboots, but not nearly as severe as others have reported, and recognize rooting and updates will fix that. That screen bleed though is just unacceptable, its the thing I stare at most on the phone.

I’ve had the HTC Sensation for a week now, and i’m on the fence about returning it too. SOOO many UI bugs and it’s driving me nuts. This has been my first dive into a manufacturer skin, i’ve always stuck to Vanilla. I guess i’m not surprised, it runs as bad as I expected. With out diving too far into it, the bugs are border line debilitating requiring manual reboots to fix the issue. So then I ask myself, is it better to manually reboot, or just reboot at random all on its own? LOL! Actually, the UI constantly reboots on the Sensation too. Not a full reboot like the g2x, just a nice HTC logo and a 45 second reload of the interface.

I’m starting to realize i’m just an unhappy cellphone buyer! Perhaps it’s time I join the me2 iphone users. :P

    • K3redwood

wats up with the ui bugs?why do you have so many?

you must do porn or something!!

  • Sensationrules14009

The Sensation has the best design of any Android phone I’ve ever seen and coming from a vanilla phone (Droid X) and being a vanilla fanboy, I have to say that Sense 3.0 is great. Beats the crap outta Touchwiz, Blur, and LG’s cheap UI.

    • fandroid11

I agree. I have both a Sensation and EVO 3d. I used to have both the Droid and Droid X. I’ve played with multiple Android phones including the Galaxy S2. The Sensation is my favorite. Sense UI is actually just as good, if not better than vanilla imo.

So I live in the hill country of austin, where I’ve only ever gotten 2g on my phones..never 3g and of course never 4g. But I wake up this morning and find I have 4g on my sensation! Even If this is a glitch with networks I’m thrilled :D I don’t know how this is happening but it is only occurring on my phone, I as well have the rocket usb, but not picking up 4g on it.

Not a half bad review, it was pretty thorough. A few things like the screen review was different from other ones. Surprisingly some people actually prefer the G2X’s screen to the sensation’s. I haven’t seen the sensation, but I love my screen.

What amazes me about the G2X’s screen is the viewing angles, which are much much more than the sensation’s from the videos I’ve seen, and most other phones I’ve seen in person. Sunlight does REALLY suck though for it.

Touchscreen issues are fixed with the leaked update, so the official final one will probably fix any real problems. The tegra processor is actually faster than the 1.2 ghz processor, because of the arm architecture. Nvidia uses v9, while the other is v8.

The take on the camera is spot on, I was happy with the pictures coming from a mytouch 3g, but they’re still nothing like a nokia camera.

The last final thing that you might not necessarily see not being a developer (not that I really am either to tell the truth) is that LG actually messed with the code a LOT. That’s a large part of the reason for all of the software bugs. Even though it looks like plain android, they messed with it to make the dual core more effective among other things. They did accidentally change one piece of code that leaves engineering mode on, which uses more system resources, thereby using more battery. There’s a patch on XDA, but hopefully LG will fix it with the update for average users.

    • Thanks for letting me know the release date, pretty sure we leaked it first. Reviews come when review phones are given, don’t like it, don’t read it.

The G2X is definitely a nice phone. One of the best android phones on the market right now. I got to play with both a G2X and Droid X2 and the G2X was even better than the X2.

  • I’ve owned this phone for about a month, and despite the phone’s speed and pure Android experience, I definitely do not recommend it. The random reboots are a minor inconvenience, except when they happen during a call or immediately afterwards.

The battery overheating, however, is a significant problem (at least for me). During charging, the phone will often shut down. During heavy use, the phone will shut down. Sitting in your pocket – or in the cup holder of your car – the phone can overheat and shut down.

Basically, it works best if you keep in on your desk in your air conditioned office and use it sparingly. I would avoid this phone until someone solves the overheating issue.

Probably not the best place to post this but in the review you stated that you were also writing a review for the Sensation. I can’t seen to find it anywhere on the site. Can you point me to where it is please?

I got mine on the launch date too and it is nothing but troubles.  I exchanged mine a couple times and still had problems like battery heating up after used, reboot by itself, network reset by itself causing drop call never had this problem with any other phone for the past 20 yrs of using cell phone, the worst one is the virtual keyboard keep messing up whenever i input something, the other side receiving a totally different set of number than the numbers I input on my end.  The last time I call tech support, they said they will not sure if I will get a new G2x if I exchange again since there are more G2x on the market now, I might end up with a refurbished one??????? what the hell, I am not paying for something new so I can exchange for something used bc the product did not work the way it supposed to.  They even charged my account for another G2x when it is suppose to be a replacement for the one did not work.  I am still this date calling tmobile customer care to getting this fixed bc they keep saying they will make a case and investigate.  Now I am stuck with a useless piece of shxt that will update “AROUND THE END OF THE WORLD CORNER” accordiing to tmobile customer care.  Sorry tmobile but I don’t think I will ever resign my contract again.  For all of you who looking to buy this phone, forget about it, don’t waste your time.  And for those who looking to sign up with tmobile, please do yourself a favor to sign up with other carrier so you don’t have to piss off in the future and waste your time typing up something like what i am doing now.  Peace, I feel so much better now!

  • I love my G2x, despite the trouble it gave me at first. Exchanged twice before i ended up with the one i have now. Installed CM 7.1 rc 1 the other day and now this phone is a MONSTER! Glad I stuck with this one, it was totally worth it. Now i have to go make my iphone and sensation carrying friends jealous >:D

Obviously this gut doesnt know what hes talking about.  The display is gorgeous (As most reviewers say) and although not as deep black (if you will) as AMOLED its much nicer to look at and the resolution looks much better.  I’ve set it side by side with my friend’s samsung and he said “well obviously you have better resoltion than mine”.  Anyway, this guy needs to get fired lol he has no clue! go valet park cars lol
