Samsung T989 Receives Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Approval…Is This The Samsung Hercules?

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news regarding the Samsung Hercules so we’re happy to bring you a Hercules story tonight. The Samsung T989 just received Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certification and we have reason to believe that the T989 may be the upcoming Samsung Hercules. We’re not going to find any new information on the Hercules through these certifications but their recent filing dates gives us hope that the phone is on track for a possible August/September release date. Now all we need is some Mr. Blurrycam images, specs, pricing, release date and we are set. Stay tuned for more!

I am also excited about this phone, as it will either be this one or the Nexus 3 (whatever the next Nexus will be called). By the time this one is released, there should be more leaked news on the next Nexus phone. Either way, one of them will be my next phone! :)

      • None

Same boat here.  Do we know the marufacturer of the next Nexus yet?

        • None

Shoot.  Just read Samsung again.  I hope that is incorrect.

        • Bimmerz

Yep, I read that too. It was highly speculated that it would be an LG phone, but I have since read that it’ll be Samsung again. I guess time will tell, as that rumor could very well change again – so we’ll see.

I’ve always been pretty down on Samsung (glossy plastic) and TouchWiz (iphone rip), but I finally got to mess with one for a week and i’m fairly impressed. I didn’t have any of the problems i’ve had with my latest rash of new phone purchases when playing with the Galaxy S 4g. I might throw in the towel on HTC, LG, and motorola for a while and give Samsung and their Touchwiz a shot. At least they don’t lock bootloaders! I actually would go grab the Galaxy S 4g at this point, but no camera flash just won’t allow me to do so.

Excited to see this one come out.

    • Anonymous

I agree with the plastic part, but the lightness of the phone is just amazing. Put on a case, and you won’t remember its plastic until you hold an Inspire or other HTC/Motorola phone.

As for TW, use LauncherPro and it’ll run as smooth as stock Android.

Hope this helped further convince you to get the Hercules. :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Simon-Yu/100000989859895 Simon Yu

Well close to as smooth, if you run a LWP.. that’s another story.

      • Anonymous

I couldn’t agree any more king.  If you want ridiculously thin then take the case off, if you want a regular size then put it back on.

I cant get with TW’ homescreen but I love all the features that TW comes with.  Sense is too bubbly for me.  I also bought LP and agree that its just as smooth as stock.

    • Majenta Rulz

You can also up the camera exposure.  It compensates nicely for the lack of a flash.  Although it does suck because you can’t use a nice flashlight app.

    • Anonymous

I don’t understand the complaint about the glossy “cheap” plastic body.  I couldn’t imagine not putting a $5 case on my $500 phone and once you do that, all you see is case and screen.  I know some people out there don’t want to protect their investment but I doubt that the people who complain about the body are those careless individuals.  Not to argue though.

I’m glad your willing to give Sammie a chance.  Let me ask you, how was it going from that SAMOLED screen back to LCD?

      • Auser72

Went from Vibrant to mytouch 4g and get jealous everytime do side by side comparison with wife Vibrant. And my vibrant with launcher pro ui was actually snappier and more stable that htc espresso.

Lol, never thought about a screen being Ashy.  I guess mine is Ashy too.  HD2 screen but soon to be upgraded to either Hercules the Sith or N9 the Jedi.  Unless my loved Campaign Contributors come through and donate me a N9 :D

Already tried that…..lol. She even laugh at me cause I made such a big deal about getting a 4g capable phone. And really there is no negligible difference for everyday internet surfing between 3g and 4g on tmobile network. I am looking forward to Hercules, 4.5 inch super amoled display might be enough to make me hold off on a tablet purchase to.

Has to be the hercules based on the model number. The vibrant/galaxy s 4g is T959 which is the current top of the line samsung device….the 989 suggests that the new device is “better” than the vibrant……the higher the number, the better the phone.

Crap I need a phone now and I was gonna get the exhibit 4g next week or should I save some more pennies and get the Hercules!? My g1 is fading fast

    • John

Yes you should wait. And if you can, just maybe wait a few weeks and if you must get a new phone, just get one but then return it before the trial period. I know that’s not “good” but… it’ll make you happy.

just buy something on craigslist to hold you over until the phone comes out. you’ll pay a good price, not have to mod your contract or use up your upgrade, then just sell it once you get your new phone

Save your pennies.  Unless you want a puny phone with lack luster features then wait for what will be considered one of the top dog phones out during it’s release.

I need to find a phone that will work with both AT&T and T-Mobile 3G bands. I prefer Blackberry but I don’t know of one that uses both. I’m going to the UK and I don’t know if my myTouch 4G will work there. What frequencies does this Samsung work with? Any idea?

Not going to happen dude. sorry to bust your bubble but I think it would have happened by now…And your My touch will work overseas, but not on 3G. 2G only.

Get a Vibrant.  It has support for Tmobile’s and ATT’s 3g/4g network as well as support for International 3g networks.

Well isn’t this the in the interesting pot? I’m not the biggest Samsung supporter but they have been doing pretty well lately and Seeing as how Dumb Crapstick Elop doesn’t want to sell the N9(Meego) in the US and how he put microSim (which he knows nobody uses) in attempt to draw back sales from Meego and trying to push WP7 in the US, (I’m still getting a N9 if I can get a Tmo US microSim card, WP7 can get lost for all I care), I must say, I am interested in this device. 4.5 inch is a big eye catcher for me, I’ll have to demo this before I decide on it but it is looking pretty solid (minus the plastic build). See what you’ve done Pimp?!?! You’ve forced me to the Dark Side (Samsung the Sith). I WANNA BE GOOD DANGIT!!! LOL!!!

How could you possibly resist a 4.5″ SuperAMOLED Plus screen @423ab555eb22e7187a30170dccd9811f:disqus ??  LOL

But damn it is pretty scandalous how Nokia is doin the N9 and the US.  Looks like you might be paying more for that 4″ screen than I would for an off contract Herc!!  Is it really worth a $600+ import?

      • Wilma Flintstone

I’ll have to see how the Jedi Council (Who have recently adopted a hidden Sith Elop), handles the Meego situation.  Also pricing is likely to change.  $600-$750 is steep and that is on purpose but hopefully the true Jedi see through the Sith Deception and drop it to more reasonable pricing.

The n9 looks promising yet I’m still sad its not available through carriers in the u.s. or else ill take it into consideration. Didn’t Elopes mentioned that in Singapore someone was drooling over the n9. Shiet I would too. I’m not impress with wp7 and probably wont support them. Lol.

Samsung always bringing out killer phones haha but I’m still intimidated by how they handle the updates and all. The process of rooting gives me a headache and I cant successfully root my phone lol. But a 4.5 in screen may seem big but I think its perfect haha well for me lol.

      • Wilma Flintstone

Agreed although Samsung has been on it lately with the updates.  Yeah Sith Elop stated how the people were drooling over the N9 and I would as well like you stated.  How can he expect more people to drool over the device when it isn’t released in their region?

Yeah, that 4.5 inch screen is a big draw for me.  That is the max screen size I’ll get. I tried a 5 inch screen on the Streak and it was TOO big. I’ll have to demo it when it hits the Tmo US stores.

        • Petey

Elop, is oh mi gosh no comment. What an idiot. That’s a sign that he should acknowledge to push this product worldwide. Seriously. But again we don’t know his business strategy so can’t say. But damn T-Mobile should try bring this phone instead of the other Nokia phones they carried or planning to get. But oh well. We can’t do much about it but just buy an imported version of it.

Yeh, 5 inches is way too big. I saw someone with the infuse and I was surprise How big that was. But agree with you, have to see it in person.

Are you forreals about Samsung updating? If that’s the case Maybe ill look back at their phone. Lol. But I’m more aiming on going to ios platform since I’m abit blah about android now.

Yaaaaawn (wipes sleep out my eyes).  After an awesome weekend, its great to jump back on TmoNews and find some (possible/probable) Hercules news.  I can’t believe its take a MONTH to get another drop of info but considering we’ve recently gotten midrange Sammies out of the way on T-Mobile, this SGH device is damn sure promising!!

I wanna inform/remind everybody that my birthday is September 25th so I’m taking donations to put toward this beast lol  And thanx for the shout out @1c771c2a9f85908fd337c85c5c906fa4:disqus I’m fo sho excited.

I’ma plug Samsung right now and say that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is THE Honeycomb tablet to buy right now.  The XOOM and the ACER up at best buy are laggy but the Tab is one SUPER thin and surprising smooth running HC Tablet and if it wasn’t for all the iPad apps, I would have waited and bought the Samsung.

    • Petey

Lol! I knew this news gonna make your day better lol.

anyone else getting tired of Samsung’s “promised” devices?  At this point I think I’m done waiting for the Galaxy SII and will wait for the 3rd Generation Google phone.  It’s been six months since gingerbread release and still no mention of an upgrade to samsung owners.  Google “prime” is rumored to be made by samsung and will release with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, if Google has HSPA+ or some other form of high speed, made my Samsung and no waiting for Android releases, I’m over Samsung, who’s with me?

    • Anonymous

Samsung is slated this year, as predicted and as they planned, to be the largest handset maker in the world, overtaking Nokia.

All indicators are that no one is with you. Looks like you’ll be running off that cliff all by your lonesome.

      • Anonymous

lame and uninsightful reply Mike.  i own two Samsung phone’s and think they are the best android phones available, however;  Samsung has delivered nothing as promised to their consumers nor have they communicated about their miscues.

you don’t sound like one who has had a Galaxy S and gone through the ringer with them, e.g. no sign of Froyo for six months nor any communication about the delay or why the switch from OTA’s as promised to Samsung Kies.  Froyo was released to new purchasers of the Galaxy S 4G on TMO before the existing owners of the original Galaxy S / Vibrant had any clue about its availability.  Pretty cool huh?  Drink more coolaide.

the story hasn’t changed.  Sammy originally promised the Galaxy SII in March, the announcement came just after the release of the Nexus S.  Still no SII in the United States and still no mention of Gingerbread to current owners of the Vibrant or the Galaxy S 4G.

Is overtaking Nokia a great accomplishment at this point?  Sure Samsung will do it but who won’t?

The Galaxy SII is a great phone right now but with everyday that passes they risk another competitor outshining them with a new faster device, e.g. Google’s 3rd generation phone, a.k.a. Nexus Prime.

        • Anonymous

I’m trying to go along with you but you just seem to be hating Samsung for unusual reasons.

First off, Samsung is NOT the only one taking 5 and 6 months to get updates to their phones and secondly, 2.2 came to the Vibrant BEFORE the Galaxy S 4G was released.  Once again Samsung is NOT the only company who updates their phones via computer.

I don’t know where in the world you got information that WE would be receiving the GSII in MARCH??  The phone was released last month and it was communicated that it would roll out in phases at certain markets at a time.  There has been zero promises from anyone about when it would be coming to the states.

Look at the Sensation and and EVO 3D.  HTC is selectively releasing the phone here and there and not EVERY carrier is getting their hands on it like the SGSII which will easily outsell HTC’s flagships.

Your last sentence there really trips me out tho.  Who do you think is profiting more from each Nexus S sale?

First, I’m aware everyone is playing similar games with the lack of solid support for update conversions.

I have lost of lock of time and focus since October 2008 when Android first rolled out.  I have had to replace a number of phones that haven’t worked properly and I’m not sure why exactly.  HTC is NOT a leader in innovation.  They may have rolled out the G1 but I had to replace that phone 5 times before upgrading to the 3G.  I replaced two of those before upgraded to the 3GS.  I then purchased a MyTouch Slide and went through 3 of them before upgrading to the Samsung Vibrant which at the time T-Mobile assured on its release date that it was HSPA+ compatable.  Due to lack of HSPA+ I then purchased a MyTouch 4G.

I may have been confused about the Froyo update on the Samsung because while the 4G had high speed internet and Froyo I stopped using the Vibrant for an extended period of time during which I also had a Nexus S.  I’m not trying to hate on Samsung, at least not intentionally.  The Galaxy S Series is the leader in the Android platform as far as I’m concerned and I think that may be part of the problems I facce.

I wrote a letter to the VP who handles press releases about numerous concerns and never received any kind of response.  T-Mobile has no answers and Samsung customer service plays dump and tells me “I can’t answer that question” which tells me they have the knowledge but they’re not allowed to share.

If you purchased a Vibrant sometime last June or July there were problems with the phone that were never immediately addressed.  I’m talking about the GPS not working properly and similar to Apple’s iPhone there was an “antenna-gate” problem with my phone.  Neither were ever addressed to my satisfaction and to this day the GPS remains an issue even with CyanogenMod7 there has yet to be a stable version, only nightlies.

There were rumors about problems between the carriers and Samsung with regards to who was holding up the OTA rollouts.  There has yet to be an official response as to whether T-Mobile or Samsung is responsible for these critical updates coming as they please.  The fact that Sammy was ready to release a new phone with Froyo without notifying those who have been loyal and own a Samsung Vibrant with an even “approximate” time frame to when they would take care of their customers I think is irresponsible.  Equally disappointed is the lack of a statement as to whether all carries would have the Galaxy SII as was the case last year or only selected carriers.  If these relationships were strong, shouldn’t there have been some offical press releease?  The Galaxy SII has missed its mark with their promised release, if they didn’t say March then it was definately in June and it’s not here and still no official word…except to Twitter that Canada would have it before the US and with no rollout in Canada I guess I can read between the lines and say we’re still aways away, IF it is even heading to T-Mobile.

My frustrations with Samsung are not product based, it’s with the lack of communication to their consumers about what we can expect, a bit of loyalty as to why I should be excited to purchase the SII. The Galaxy SII is a leader in the States on paper but there is no solid confirmation we’ll even see it this year.  They’ve already dissapointed me and pushing towards the next best phone.

As far as jumping to a “competitor” in the Google Nexus, next to be unveiled (rumored the Google Prime), I understand that Samsung makes this phone but overall I think it’s more valuable to Google then Samsung because Google has no loyalty to anyone,  They could be using Samsung to increased their branding and then dump then like they did HTC which vaulted Android into the spotlight with the G1.  Apple is threatening to find another chip provider than Samsung, once Google has a solid brand that is above and beyond other phones and rolls out updates as they are available;  there will be no “must have” relationship with Samsung.

Your concern is communication.  You want Samsung to communicate exactly when they’ll do exactly what.  Sure it would be nice to see what every company plans on doing for the next 24 months but come on what consumer company does that?

You wanna know when GB is coming?  So do I but look at HTC, look at LG making claims about “oh the Gingerbread update is coming by X time of the year” and here we are hanging on by those promises still waiting.  What’s the difference?

Why no OTA updates?  Neither iOS nor WP7 do OTA updates so why harp on Samsung for OTA update support for the 2 maybe 3 updates that these phones will even get.  Kies Air doesn’t update your phone over 3G so the only difference is cutting the USB cord.  All Galaxy S’ around the world update through Kies.

The antenna problem was fixed and wasn’t even a performance issue.  Mine did it.

The only thing I can get with you on is the jacked up GPS which I’m 100% certain will never work better than 75% of the time.  Lastly, I’m gonna say again that there was NO info from Samsung regarding a US release date.  You can’t seriously be mad at Samsung because we are 2 weeks shy of the US release of the OG Galaxy S.  I mean you make it sound like Samsung is required to announce their future releases.

I’m confused.  Your over Samsung or want Samsung?  Both devices you speak of are “worth waiting for” Samsung devices??

anyone else getting tired of Samsung’s “promised” devices?  At this point I think I’m done waiting for the Galaxy SII and will wait for the 3rd Generation Google phone.  It’s been six months since gingerbread release and still no mention of an upgrade to samsung owners.  Google “prime” is rumored to be made by samsung and will release with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, if Google has HSPA+ or some other form of high speed, made my Samsung and no waiting for Android releases, I’m over Samsung, who’s with me?

Supposedly the same Qualcomm processor used in the Sensation/Evo 3D(I sincerely hope not, considering how the GSII scores 1000 more points in Quadrant despite having the same clock speed and amount of scores), 1 GB RAM, 16 GB Memory, not sure what GPU, 42 mbps down cap on HSPA+(This is important, very) and of course a 4.5 inch Super Amoled Plus display. I seriously think it’d be a horrible design choice for Sammy to use the Qualcomm in this.

Based on everything I’ve read, this thing is the roided up version of the Galaxy S2.  While that one is purported to ship with Google Prime (Android 4.0), this one will supposedly have HSPA+ 42 and the aforementioned dual-band 802.11n.  Considering how data rates are now getting tiered, faster Wi-Fi will be a blessing.  Also, that 4.5″ screen shouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings.

It’ll hurt some skinny jeans’ pockets tho!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if the this Herc actually turns out to be the Google Prime??  Wishful thinking but stranger things could happen!

I was thinking the same thing but I cannot imagine a Nexus being that big.

lots of people asking for hercules specs, does anyone disagree with this:

The Samsung Hercules is as close as the Samsung Galaxy SII as anyone phone that has been confirmed (or leaked) to be released by T-Mobile.  Although there are recent reports that the Galaxy S II is coming to T-Mobile, the leaked roadmap only discussed the Samsung Hercules.  Which is the same but with larger 4.5″ screen and a NFC chip.  Everything else is identical to the Galaxy S II.

    Am I missing anything?

I really want to compare the Galaxy S2 to the Sensation. I am tempted to just get the Sensation. It’s is soooo insulting to only have 1 Gig of storage though. That’s my biggest reason for wanting the GS2. But the AMOLED looks so weird …i love bright but it’s vulgar lol. The colors all look fake like my HDTV with the color turned up to 300%. lol. I like lighter and more memory. But I can’t wait forever. They are loosing hundreds of customers daily.

If you have blutooth in your car make sure they are compatible.  The phone is excellent but it won’t talk to my new 2011 car so it will have to go back.

All the time.  And I cannot switch to Chrome.  Locked down to IE by work.  I have to click link and then come back a couple minutes later with every article.
