Is Your HTC Sensation 4G Suffering Data Connectivity Issues? The Fix Is Easy.

Since the first few Sensation 4G’s were sold from Walmart a few days before June 15th a small number of Sensation 4G owners began to complain about data connectivity issues. Some users find themselves stuck on a 2G network having dropped off from 4G, some are suffering intermittent data issues with data working one minute and cut out the next. As it turns out there is a legitimate reason these phones have done this and the fixes are actually quite easy. T-Mobile’s own forums saw the issue start sometime around June 10th and thankfully in no time at all they’ve been able to pinpoint the problem.

So what are the fixes to those of you who might be suffering from data connectivity issues?

  1. The SIM card: If you are using a 2G SIM, perhaps the one you had before you purchased your Sensation 4G then this is a likely culprit and should be swapped out at your local T-Mobile store for a 3G/4G SIM. Your best best is just replace it with the SIM that came in the box.
  2. Ensuring that your data plan is properly provisioned with a 4G data plan. Customers who are on grandfathered plans, blackberry plans etc should make sure your Data SOC is on a 4G plan.
  3. If the above problems don’t work (and they should) the last resort is to do a little tinkering around by dialing: *#*#4636#*#* and then press “Phone Information” > Toggle Ciphering to OFF > Turn off Radio > Turn on Radio > Toggle Ciphoring to ON.

That’s it, the fixes are that simple and as you can see this problem isn’t really a phone problem at all. The Sensation 4G doesn’t appear to be suffering any sort of a horrendous software issue and the phone can be fixed within a matter of moments. Hope these fixes help you!

Almost 5 days in and mine is having no issues here in the DFW area (fingers crossed). I’m on the grandfathered unlimited voice plan ($49.99) along with the mytouch unlimited text/web ($34.99 plan). Hopefully I won’t get knocked off in the coming days. The customer care rep I spoke to said it should be fine and that the plans are not specific to the phones, which was interesting. I used my SIM that I upgraded to last August instead of the one in the box as the rep said it would work the same.

Also, no issues with wifi, signal, overheating, battery life, lag, etc. I only get1-2 bars in my house sometimes (fine outside) but all my previous phones were the same. Friends/family on other carriers also only get 1-2 bars when they’re at the house (lots of other wireless signals in my home & I’m close to a lake with few towers nearby). It’s been superb quality so far and I’m happy I used my upgrade for it.

You can get the same unlimited talk text 4g data prepaid for $70/month, $15cheaper than what you are paying, no fees, no tax.

      • Anonymous

I considered that but decided that with the AT&T merger uncertainty, I decided I would rather be under contract for two years. The problem with the $70 plan is that although you get that price each month, they can change it at any time. Your plan is only good for the 30 days and that’s all they have to provide for that price. They could start charging $90 or $100 next month, or stop offering the unlimited 4G no contract plan altogether, and you would have to either get a different plan (or switch providers) as they are under no obligation to continue to offer it at $70 month.

        • Anonymous

That’s true, They can drop the plan anytime but so far so good (7 months). I saved a lot of money. paying a total of $63 per month(callinmart) for the $70 plan. Hope it last forever since ATT CEO said that Tmo can keep the current pricing.

Okay… I’ve read all the post and I have even tried all the suggested fixes and still have this great phone that is fast to process stuff but SLOW on DATA.  I have talked to Customer Service, changed out Sim cards twice and each time had TMO push out a reset and still the same 2G signal in most areas.  When I do have 4G indicator my speed is still slow, like less than 4 gb slow down (3G speeds). I have also gone into a TMO store where they also changed out SIM card.  I too am on a grandfathered plan but was told by both CS and Store rep that although the name of the plan is different 3G/4G that the access though the APN is the same.  When I do have 4G indicator my speed is still slow, like less than 4 gb slow down (3G speeds)

For all those who have a 4G device please post what speeds you are getting because my 3G Vibrant was getting the same speeds my 4G sensation is getting.  If I buy a device that is advertised to not have buffering and theoretical speeds of 14.4 mb download then I’d like to see it.

Oh I will add that I did change my preferred network mode to WCDMA only last night while at my home and speed was fast downloading apps and viewing web pages but… the problem with the “only” part is once I drove to work this morning i lost connection and even while at Houston Bush Intercontinental airport I was getting no signal.  Changed back to auto and you guessed it, shows 2G.

Oh and one last thing is phone gets hot and battery life is like 9 hours at best.

Please someone find a true fix as really want this phone to work but will send back within 14 days if I must.

I get 1/2 of a meg download and less then that upload on my 4g T-mobile service. I have the Sensation phone. I live in San Francisco Ca. I get 4 bars on my 4G indicator. The only time I get almost 6 megs is in the T-mobile shop on Van Ness.
I live on the top floor of a high rise in San Fran. I have an unblocked few  from my window. I still can not break a meg in my apartment, at any time of the day. I picked up this phone and new service on Friday.
4G my you know what. Welcome to the new AT&T.

does anyone know how to tel if you have a 4g sim card or not, are there any numbers on it or any way to tell?

Exchange for a different one.  The antenna is in the removable back plate of the phone and if any of those copper prongs aren’t exactly as they were, connection will be unstable.  Our HTC rep keeps telling us to tell customer to not remove the back piece unless absolutely necessary because the more those get moved, the more likely you can have reception issues.  You won’t see 14.4 anywhere, but it should be higher than your 3G Vibrant.  And, if you’re seeing 2G more on the Sensation than you were on your Vibrant, I would definitely swap the phone once before returning altogether.  BTW they waive the restock fee if you’re sticking with the same model but exchanging for defect reasons.

    • Jcstugotts

I am not sure if this helps cause I myself don’t know what it means but I did the sim card switch and verified that I am on the 4g plan. I downloaded the speed test app and the best I got was 6144 on the download and 1765 on the upload. I live just outside of Philly. Is that good or bad speeds. Both of those numbers were kbps. Any feed back would be awesome.

I spent a LOT of time a Bush and O’Hare since Saturday.  Neither airport gave me great speeds (2-2.8Mbps at Bush and 2.8-3.4 at O’Hare)  I think TMO has a tower at O’Hare, because I was getting around -86 dBm there, but only ~101 dBm at Bush.

I have the unlimited everything EM+ ($60). I had data problems 3 months ago w/ my G2 but called them and they fixed it. It has to say “4G” on the data plan (mine is SP11 4G). Switched the sim card to my new Sensation last week and no problems at all. Loving the phone. I get up to 6Mbps down. with bursts of 7-8. Best phone ever.

  • Velazkool

i use to have that issue and the whole problem was
1.- 2g sim card from my old blackberry 8900.. had to replace it for a 3g sim card..
2.-my data plan was for blackberry not for a 4g device..
so those 2 steps solve my problem.. hope it helps

  • Elmano68

Had mine since the 9th, got it from Wal-Mart, love this phone coming from a g2. My home screen does go into “loading” randomly. And one day it wouldn’t charge, anybody, else had these problems?

    • F800

I’ve had mine since the 15th.  It’s got a lot of nice features, the GPS is sensitive and locks onto the satellites very quickly.   BUT, I’ve had mine lock up twice where I had to remove batteries – it locked up last night and I didn’t get my wake up alarm!

  • Enes Gluhic

What speeds should we be getting on 4g?   i know on verizon people get 20 to 30MBs  up and down

    • CRT24

That’s because there are barely any devices on verizons LTE network…….the rocket 3.0 which is 42 MBS capable was getting those speeds on T-Mobile during site tests with much more traffic on them….you will not get that on the sensation since it is 14.4 capable but 5-8 mbs should be common in 21-42 mbs areas

      • Anonymous

Actually the VZW LTE network is already seeing a slow down.. speeds below 10Mbps

        • Burketony

I was able to get 14.5 Mbps on the Verizon Thunderbolt.

      • Mimikr

“5-8 mbs should be common in a 21-42 mbs areas.”  I’m sorry but that just sounds wrong.  If that is the case they should advertise it’s a 5-8 mbs capacity and when people get those numbers then they would be happy.

all speed test ive seen on verizons LTE are alot slower than tmobiles hspa+ at least what im seeing in the houston market im getting anywhere from 8-12 mbps on my g2x highest ive seen is 13.9

      • Mimikr

This is what I was expecting when I bought the Sensation 4G speeds to be 8-12 mb with occasional 10+, thank you for posting.  Is that on a Sensation 4G phone or other 4G phone that you are referring to?  Anyone who thinks a 4G phone that is advertised to get speeds up to 14.4 mb and average 4-6 is false advertising in my opinion.

I’m seeing “Phone X will be getting Gengerbread” almost every other day now but havent heard a peep about the Vibrant getting anything at all.

On a side note of your random note, I wonder how many of these newly released Gingerbread phones and recently updated phones are gonna even have a chance at getting Ice Cream Sandwich.  Google needs to hurry up spill some info on the next phone update.  I hope people aren’t buying these super duper phones with Gingerbread only to not be built for Ice Cream.  We’ll see.

I have no connectivity issues but issues that include fixes like these RARELY work.. we need an update from HTC, not someone on XDA. A sim swap MIGHT help but usually it doesn’t

Got my HTC Sensation 4G with 4G plan from T-Mobile yesterday, was working great but after some hours of playing around it went to 2G and then turned the mobile network off (or it said “Turning on…” or “Turned on” but was not usable any more). Fix 3 help (Thanks!) – not instantly, but after a while I’m now back to 4G.

    Thanks again!

I’ve had an odd issue with my Sensation disconnecting from the data network when connected to a Wifi network, otherwise reception is great.  Definitely better than my ancient G1.

    • Bundtsuperior

I say it’s “odd” because I always look at the connection and it’s connected to a G network with 1 bar, but the second I receive a call or disconnect from Wifi it switches to very strong 4G.

  • http://www.volkswagen.de Michael

Just powered up my new Sensation and activated the SIM card included whit the unit. Works very well on WCDMA ONLY mode. I made sure the CSR enabled the 4G SOC within my account because she almost forgot about this. This thing has much better reception than my 3G Vibrant ;)

    • Gav67us

Same here. My Sensation works great on WCDMA only. However, when in spotty 4G areas I switch to pick best option and naturally switches to 2G and the data does not seem to work. It just times out. Kind of frustrating. I could download with my wife’s 3G device in the same location?

I tried the reset but the signal still bouncing around from nothing to G, 2G and 4G.
I am also have issue with my wifi connection,  I have the stand right next to my router to get signal.  I know it is not my wifi issue because my GF has an iPhone and she has no problem with hers and my old phone could connect to wifi without a problem.  I am trying to get some help either from Tmobile or HTC and was I have no hear back from neither.  I guess I will be returning the phone if I can’t find a solution within the next couple days.

Sidenote:  The sync from Facebook also have issue.  All my friend’s birthday had moved 1day ahead when the info gets into the phone.  and I have not find a solution to that either.  Does anyone has that problem or is it some stupid mistake on myside that someone can show me how to fix it?

I have the same Facebook sync problem with my contacts and I hear that it has occured as well in Europe but they don’t have a fix for it yet.

I also had an issue with video taken with my S4G not playing back. This was solved by pulling the battery and sim out for a few seconds.

That’s great in all if you are ALWAYS in a 4G area, go outside even by an inch and now you have NO coverage because you have it set to WCDMA only.  This is not a fix only a band aid.  Please TMO and HTC, offer a true fix.

i love tmonews lol thanks to you i have a working phone now, i love  tmo’s cust serv. but i feel more knowledgeable than all the associates i’ve spoken to over the past week. i think i spoke to about 5 different reps and none of them solved my issue. the final rep was because i told him what to do to fix my data. i’d be lost without u lol <3

This is nothing at all but speculation so keep that in mind:

At the end of April, roughly the 29th or my Mytouch 4G took a nosedive regarding data as well as even cell phone signal. At first it was just data, then it was network trouble and then it lost connectivity randomly altogether. I called TMo on April 30 to report the issue. I was told they were having trouble with a single tower and that it should be rectified quickly. I have been in constant contact since then, the situation is now that there’s a “Tower in maintenance” – yes, still…since the end of April.

I have been through 3 MT4Gs and 1 Samsung GS 4G (which ironically is the only phone in the bunch that had ZERO issues but I couldn’t keep because of internal storage constraints).

I have surmised that TMobile has upgraded certain towers in the U.S and HTCs radios aren’t playing nicely with them right now….at least the radios in the MT4G and G2.

I have gotten a variety of errors on my phone from error connecting to network, to sim card cannot be registered to no network found (on all the MT4Gs). Then, whoosh…everything is perfection for a good 30m. Then, trouble again. Mind you, the Sim card I have is 5 months old and a 3G/4G Sim card (came with MT4G) and that it worked perfectly inside. the 48hrs I kept the GS 4G for.

I’ve been to one of the TMo stores in my area and a CSR told me in confidence that they have been getting people returning/switching their newly purchased MT4Gs as well. The other day, the MT4Gs had also run out (thats how I got my hands on the GS 4G) – that gave me some insight into there possibility of there being a bigger issue at hand. Why would the MT4G replacement stock run out? Because there’s a higher than usual demand for replacements, that’s why. People think their MT4Gs are malfunctioning and CSRs are replacing them. I think it’s the towers that are the problem. This Sensation 4G issue is also an indication of there being some sort of outside problem. I doubt TMo will ever admit it…and you can’t have your ETF removed for tower troubles, even if they are permanent. You must either pay the ETF or wait out your 2 years (Sensation 4G) or 1 year and 6+ months (MT4G if you got it in November) contract.

I’d advise anyone who has the intention to get a Sensation 4G to check the TMo forums to see if there are users complaining of a problem in their area or WAIT for another phone to come.

if you’re having issues with data then you can ask Customer Loyalty to remove the data plan. I’ve been having the same problem for 4 months and wasn’t able to use data. After 4 months of calling a rep finally told me that I can have the data plan removed which I did the other day.

But I wouldn’t bother asking them to refund the money you paid for data when you couldn’t use it. Apparently, customers are supposed to know that they have the option to have the data plan removed …. but T-Mobile reps are instructed not to actually disclose that. Wrap your head around that!

I’ve had this same problem since December.  New sims, 5 handset replacements, tickets, etc.  Nothing has worked.  Even tried the trick that “fixes” the problem on the Sensation.  CS has admitted to there being a known issue with the MT4G and it dropping connections but out of all the ones I’ve spoke to, only 1 has said it.  I have had many say its something with the towers/network and there is no use replacing the phone over again.  Who knows what it is or when it will get fixed but I’m over this problem after 6 months of it.  Paying for service and a phone that you can’t properly use is a real kick in the back end.  HTC has been no help either.  Just transfer my call to Tmobile CS.

yep, exactly I went from the MT4g to the Sensation and same stuff is happening. This is a joke.  I like the features on my phone, but realistically I need to use it for business and cannot be missing calls due to lack of signal. I have 4 bars, then none. and this happens all day in various locations. I paid too much for this phone. companies have been making phones worse and worse these days. It is ridiculous that I have to flash diff roms and mess with my phone so much for it to work. What happened to being able to take something out of a box and use it as is(to full capacity). THESE SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS FAIL

I had this problem but then took TMoNews suggestion and changed my plan.  I was still on an unlimited BB plan and was getting crappy connections, 2G at best.  I’m now on an unlimited Android plan and have had 4G speeds consistently.  I’m in the Las Vegas area.
