Can Someone Please Tell Me Where The HTC Sensation 4G Marketing Is?

There are a number of reasons why many think T-Mobile is on the chopping block to AT&T but I firmly believe one of the key failures of T-Mobile in recent memory has been marketing. Now let me preface this by saying I fully understand T-Mobile doesn’t have a Verizon-sized budget for marketing and we aren’t going to get DROID-like commercials and I’m ok with that. I do however want one commercial, just ONE for the HTC Sensation 4G BEFORE it’s released. I want it from T-Mobile, not HTC and I want them to say it loud and proud that they finally have a 4.3″ Android phone.

What gives T-Mobile? Why has marketing always been a sore spot in our discussions? What is it that makes you give money to Charles Barkley and teach him to use a Sidekick and then seemingly ignore one of the most anticipated phones in recent memory. You won exclusive NBA marketing rights and yet you skip marketing any number of high profile handsets. It’s true we’ve seen marketing for the myTouch and “G” series line of phones as they are the exclusive lines of T-Mobile handsets. It’s great that you have marketed them but why just them as they are without argument not the only phones on T-Mobile worthy of marketing.

Some would say that word of mouth is enough to sell this phone? I would like to challenge that assertion and ask if T-Mobile’s marketing team believes that? Viral marketing is a tremendous asset in the tech space these days and we wouldn’t ignore its impact on sales but it’s not enough. The general consumer, the average consumer who have left T-Mobile in droves for high profile handsets on other carriers need to know T-Mobile has something that competes. Not only does it compete but it’s considered one of the top Android phones on the market today. Where is that message T-Mobile? Why aren’t you screaming that from the roof tops?

I love Magenta, I obviously do since I have TmoNews.com but a lack of proper marketing has always angered me about T-Mobile and I don’t enjoy pointing out the company’s shortcomings . I want to lift them up and scream to the world the advantages they offer and the great things they carry. Except why should I do that when the company won’t do it on its own?

For T-Mobile’s sales reps who are hoping this device brings the customers back they have little hope customers will even know about the device outside of the tech blog world. Give me a one page ad in the newspaper, thirty second radio spot or Carly holding the phone on national TV and doing a dance. Something, anything that let’s people know the phone exists and not AFTER it’s already on store shelves. Build up the anticipation, get the customer base excited and do something other than letting some kid rap about a Sidekick 4G.

I beg of you T-Mobile in what is possibly your final months to do something about the marketing and give the Sensation 4G the kind of presence it deserves.

They could at least take HTC’s sensation ad and just use it as it is….I’m sure HTC wouldn’t mind selling a few more phones…

    Something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYFM26NFjVo

Great article and so true!! If it wasn’t for TmoNews Facebook and Website I wouldn’t know about the great phones and rate plan changes that T-Mobile is putting out.  In fact, I first heard about the Sensation here and your website kept building the anticipation and kept giving the specs on it and guess what?! I will be buying it tomorrow!! Hmmm…maybe they should give you a cut!!

    • TweetMo

I second that. I’m buying one sometime before the 26th… thanks only to TmoNews

Well, I’m glad that you are calling them out on this. Their marketing department SUCKS. That whole department should be fired. This is nothing new though…I complained about them not advertising the G2X before it came out. They will run a couple of ads about the sensation after it releases then go back to making fun of ATT.

Agreed… I’ve signed up for notifications from HTC and TMO but received nothing. My friends who are very much into high tech phones haven’t heard of it (they’re mostly Verizon people). I fully expect that the TMO store will be empty tomorrow when I stop in on my lunch break to pick two Sensations.

The G2x had no commercial and was sold out in a cuople of days (and just got a commercial after they sold out). The same is going to happen with the Sensation 4G… Then he’s going to posting about the Sensation being sold out.

The g2x selling out was due to low supply and high returns, not because it was hugely successful.

Yeah that’s true, but the Sensation 4G is going to sold out regardless… everybody is gonna be going crazy for that phone, especially on T-Mobile.

It’s not “sold out” that matters..it’s how many units and new activations there are in total. An item being sold out (unless it’s the iPhone/iPad) is a missed opportunity to gain/retain a customer – it’s not something you aspire to have.

    Well said, sir!

Here’s a marketing idea… give a room full of monkeys Sensation 4G’s and they’ll write the iTunes EULA using the most kick ass phone on the market.
Of course, I’m not in marketing by profession, so that might actually be a horrible idea.  It’s an idea nonetheless, and that’s more than T-Mobile has shown.

Ok I just got of the phone with a T mobile rep and he said the AT&T- T Mobile merger is not gonna happen. He said it didnt pass the FCC hearings like 6 weeks ago. He sounded serious, wish I could remember his name.

    • crt24

Everything is on track with the acquisition (this is not a merger!)….the fcc and the doj have not even ruled on this yet and I can assure you that when this happens approved or not, that you will hear it from a more credible source than a T-Mobile rep.

    • JustMe

They were congressional hearings and largely for show. The decision was not made then and is not made by congress, but by the FCC & DOJ.

This is one problem out of many that plague T-Mobile. There is a perception that T-Mobile has junk phones and an unreliable network. How are you going to overcome these perceptions if you don’t get the word out? T-Mobile has some great phones in its lineup that deserve more attention than they’re getting now.

There needed to be a mass firing a long time ago from marketing to the board and get some fresh blood into this company. Instead we’re being served on a platter to of all companies at&t. Pathetic.

HTC itself is marketing the Sensation more than T-Mobile is. I went to my local shopping mall the other day and all the ads (the ones that are on the other side of the mall directories) were of the Sensation. It was HTC’s “You” campaign ads.

  • Trentlarge Gamecocks

Okay, here’s the thing… I don’t know about most of you guys, but I see it happening more, and more everyday. The tech world in less technically inclined people is basically a battle of ‘Keeping up the the Jones’. People don’t know specs.. They don’t understand processor speed, OS numbers, Skins, RAM, memory.. People dont care. People care about having the best in terms of consumer knowledge. The iPhone is great, no denying it, but there are many many android phones that claim a title over it. However, people still gasp when then see one, and automatically are envious of the person holding it. Same goes for the Droid line. I can’t tell you how many people tell me I should go and get a droid when I show them my phone.. I have a G2X for goodness sakes! Specs off the chart as of right now! But again, people dont understand that. The average smartphone buyer is looking for the best to his knowledge, what the tv tells him, what advertising had put into the public mind. The Sensation is amazing. Arguably the top phone on the market. However… There will be no lines.. No public gasps.. No envious stares.. Unfortunately for T-Mobile this will be just another phone. You can’t expect people to walk in once a week to see what new phones t-mobile has.. If magenta ever wants to truly see the business turn around, we need to stop wasting our time and money on these silly services, like bobsled, and instead invest in some decent advertising. I would love to hear ‘Oh my gosh! You got a Sensation’! After I crash through the doors to get mine the 16th

    • Mike

That was just about the best example ever! I agree with that 1000% people say Droid like it’s a totally different phone. All because the TV said so. That’s how most.consumers are these days. And if you want to appeal to them you kind of have to shove it down their throats with kool names and graphics. Sucks but its true.

It’s funny when you see TMO and Verizon TV commercials back-to-back: Carly against a plain white background, vs. a thundering CGI Matrix-like clip in which “Droid” and “LTE” are fused into each other in a particle accelerator. Really makes the $$ diff. btw the two companies stand out starkly..

    • TweetMo

Yeah, but I can put up with minimalist ads with the monthly rates that T-Mo offers. Vz’s customers are paying for their ads… Suckers!

I called T-Mobile yesterday to talk about my plan and found out that the Sensation was available to buy. I ended up buying the Sensation yesterday at 1:00 in the afternoon. No advertising being done at all for this phone. What are they waiting for????? Whoever is running sales, they should be fired ASAP. Even if the buyout goes as planned they should still be looking after the bottom line. There is still at least a year before this thing might go thru. There could be plenty of money made in that time.

I always wondered how people could be given such freedoms and use them to look up completely useless information and say the most stubborn things. So many of us spend our time looking up subjects that have absolutely no effect in our lives and say crappy things to start wars between ourselves. No surprise the big guys were able to shift the economy to favor themselves while the consumers were occupied fighting each other for bread crumbs.

Anyway, to some extent I almost to believe Deutsche Telekom could be influencing them to run their US branch into the ground on purpose. Probably to keep its overall price down so it will be cheaper for At&t to buy out. Or At&t is paying the marketing team to do a shitty job.

It’s honestly a shame.  How do they expect to keep customers who are unsure of the whole acquisition when they’re seemingly acting like they’ve already thrown in the towel?  Showing enthusiasm and excitement would be great to boost customer morale, and right now I’d say that it’s pretty low.

I was very excited about this phone but was not impressed with the display. Really it’s just a bigger mytouch 4G with a different lock screen and striped back. Either way I agree that marketing sucks but you have to keep in mind that the target demographic for tmo is thrifty people, families, and those that are against the big boys. Tmo is to walmart What Target is to Verizon.

    • Setzer715

I’m not sure how you can call it a bigger MT4G.  Let’s see, upgraded processor, upgraded camera, dual LED Flash, Larger Display, higher resolution display, seriously upgraded GPU, Gorilla glass, Android 2.3.3, Sense 3.0, Purse sense (not T-Mobiles version), HDMI output (not sure I’d use it, but just comparing), Instant Camera shots.  Um, yeah, that’s the best I can do off the top of my head.

      Larger MT4G?  I think NOT!

      • Tech7

None of those things you listed are deal breakers or “new features” for an average consumer. The specs are great on the Sensation but in person it just feels like a glorified mt4g. Build quality is good but they REALLY need to work on that washed out screen with bad viewing angles and generic looking icons in Sense that are identical to a mt4g running launcherpro.

    • chrisi

Haha….your analagy at the end is hilarious. I understand what you were trying to say, but the correct description would be: T-Mobile is to Verizon what Target is to Wal-Mart. And IMO, all four of those companies suck, and this would be saying that Wal-Mart is a “high-end” retailer :P. I was thinking of getting the Sensation, but $80 minimum for a call/txt/data plan thats not even unlimited? And the other companies are even worse. I say we as consumers band together and everyone cancel their service on July 1, 2011. And do NOT re-start it until they drop their bloated plan prices. I’m on VM currently, and have NEVER had a problem. Clearly, the prices from the other guys are way too high because Americans will gladly pay $$$$ for brand name

    • Guest

Don’t you mean that Walmart is to Target what Tmobile is to Verizon?…. And that’s a bad analogy anyways! Yes walmart is cheaper than target, but it is a WAY more successful company!  And what do you mean it’s basically a mytouch 4g, have you done any research on this phone at all? The display may not be a super amoled like the galaxy, but it has a higher resolution than both the galaxy and the mytouch 4g. What about the fact that it comes with android 2.3 (gingerbread); what about the 8 megapixel camera with instant capture; what about video camera which records in 1080p at 30 frames per second; WHAT ABOUT THE DUAL CORE 1.2 GIG PROCESSOR!…. Again have you done ANY research on this phone at all?

      • Tech7

Ok I screwed up that analogy but I was getting tired by the end of the post and you got what I was intending to say. My point is that the average consumer doesn’t care about specs, if they did Apple would not be successful. The screen may have a higher resolution than mt4G but it’s a larger size, dual core is not a great selling point because it will take everyday usage to see that difference. Sense only really has a fancy lockscreen difference. Side by side there’s not any noticeable huge advantages between this and the mt4G besides size, camera, and back cover. IMO the display (which is a big selling point) still looks “ashy” when compared to a SGS2 or an Iphone and the new Sense is over rated.

Right on about the marketing failures! I’ll never forget the naming bluders they’ve made – countless reps I’ve spoken with had confused hotspot@home and @home with each other. On a consumer front, “even more” and “even more plus” have always confused me, as far as which is which..unless I look at a comparison matrix.

Speaking of hotspot@home…that was a great service that differentiated T.Mo, yet the complete lack of marketing made sure that no one knew about it – same story again with the current WFi calling service.

  • Anonymous

What makes you think that T-Mo finally getting a 4.3″ Android phone will make any difference?!  Hell, T-Mo getting the iPhone wouldn’t save them!  The company is “Stick a fork in it” DONE!

Repeating a comment I put on a different thread several hours ago – The T-Mobile web site shows the Samsung Exhibit as ‘coming soon’, but there is NO mention of the HTC Sensation anywhere that I could find.  If there IS one, you must really have to search for it.

    This is really curious.

It is sad. Go to ebay and you will see that a lot of the phones arent even selling! The G2X flew off shelves but t-mobile has done nothing to promote the Sensation in the mainstream. This phone will be a big marketing fail and  suffer in sales. What a waste!

Way to go David. If it weren’t for you and this exceptional blog, I wouldn’t know about half of these phones being released. I know more about them than the TMO employees in my area. Most of them haven’t heard about the Sensation, until a couple of days ago. Word of mouth is a great way to make sales, but it is not enough in a business such as this that needs to sell a lot of devices. I love TMO, but they really need some real marketing. I’ll do it for a few grand a month and gladly make their marketing team look like slackers, oh wait, they do that all by themselves.
