T-Mobile Unlimited Wi-Fi Calling Feature Going Live Tomorrow

After an out of the blue announcement and a just as quick delay T-Mobile is bringing their unlimited Wi-Fi calling feature back for free beginning tomorrow May 13th. That’s right tomorrow. That is all.

Currently, placing calls over Wi-Fi deducts from a customer’s in-plan minutes. Effective5/13, a new feature will launch that will allow customers with capable phones the ability to place calls over Wi-Fi without deducting from in-plan minutes! This is not only a great value, being FREE, but can help customers who experience coverage issues in areas that Wi-Fi is available.

This new feature is available to all Even More and Even More Plus Postpaid rate plans for customers with Wi-Fi Calling capable handsets.

:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lol. It’s crazy how great T-Mobile is doing soon as this acquisition came into play. It makes you wonder why didn’t they already do stuff like this? or do they know or planned for the AT&T deal to not go through. Hmm…

    • http://twitter.com/ReklessSVT Jeremy Vermillion

i think they planned for this not to go thru, im believing that more each day

They are truly playing with my emotions.. I thought from day one that there may be some scheming going on, but dismissed those feelings. After the last few days, I’m becoming more certain that there is some scheming going on! One can hope..they are stepping it up in my opinion and an extra 6 bil can certainly help.

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Samehere. I feel the exact same way. I’m so confused right now. I’m not sure what is what. I guess we’ll just have to wait & see how this will pan out in due time.

Is there a list of eligible phones? I remember that my N1 wasn’t allowed before.

Sigh, postpaid. I should just bite the bullet but I’m trying to hold out …

I got WiFi calling on my G2. Do I have to enroll in something to not have the minutes taken from my plan, or does this feature just not deduct minutes from my plan in the background?

you will get a text, supposedly tomorrow telling you how to sign up. It should be like going into your acct online and adding this feature, like visual voicemail. tomorrow telling you how to sign up. • Psevoznik

Can we use it while overseas? I am in Argentina for 2 weeks and don’t want to make a call in my g2x since the rep told me that even when I’m in wifi calling I will be charged as international roaming. Is that true? I used to talk with my Blackberry’s UMA and never paid a single roaming minute.

    • Nate32

That is not true. I traveled to Chile and Peru last December and WiFi calls to the US while down there via my G2 were billed to me as local US calls! I checked online a few hours later and they indeed were billed as regular/domestic calls.

      • Nate32

opps sorry I meant my BB 9700 with UMA then but should be the same with the G2..

    • Anonymous

Yep, I was in Italy in November with my G2 and used it with nO problems. Only used up my regular bucket of minutes.

dont get why people grandfathered into plans can take advantage of this…sorta dissapointing that we get little love.

    • Like_itnot

do you mean “can’t take advantage of this” or literally as you typed?  I ask because the way you have it worded, and I’m reading, is a good thing.  Saying people with grandfathered plans DO get to take advantage of this offer as well.

Maybe it’s late and I’m just making things difficult (as I have all day) and in that case, I apologize.

      • Jake

        sorry i was the tired one….meant can’t*

  • 4G_or_not_4G

T-Mobile is so cool, they can’t go away…great plans and now great phones…what else do you want…Go TMO!

  • http://ashn.myopenid.com/ Ash

I have HD2 running Android, can both Winmo and Android use this? Is it an app? or?

Now the cry babies who were bitching about the delay look like fools. Only 2 days delay.

    • Snowzone1976

hey ash what android are you useing on the HD2

      • http://ashn.myopenid.com/ Ash

It’s the SD card version, because I wanna still be able to sometime access Winmo.
        The file name is
        HD2Froyo_V2.1.7z
You can search for it on XDA dev.
Good speed, super stable, everything works.

If anyone has a better build in mind, do share. :)
I wanna keep using SD version until I get the HTC sensation.

This should bring in some of those rural customers!

    • AnonGuy

Not really. They will go with Verizon or at&t so they can get their emails while having dinner at the neighbors. T-mobile already has free roaming. What keeps rural customers away is their retarded small data network coverage. Its truly terrible. I’m on t-mobile and on a good day I get two bars gprs reception…

      • http://dannythorpe.com/ dthorpe

Speak for yourself.  I’m rural and I chose TMobile because WiFi Calling enables me to get cell coverage anywhere on my property just by installing my own WiFi access points.  We get *zero* cell coverage up here in the mountains from any carrier, so TMobile is the only carrier that works for me.

  • mac

how exactly do i do this? is this “internet calling” –> “SIP acounts” under my settings?

  • Guest

It’s bogus!  T-Mobile reps (and I called thrice, 1 rep know before 1 p.m. Eastern Time, 2 later on FRI 13th) don’t what I’m talking about the UNLIMITED FREE WI-FI WITHOUT your planned minutes.

    • Alex

they dont like you i guess….

  • Alex

OO i finally made a cal over wif calling for about and hour and didnt use no minutes it free, about time !!!! woohooo….!!!

    • Arpit85

how u did it caz i cant get it to work in my g2

      • Camille

First your phone should be connected to a Wifi network.  Then, if your phone does in fact have the Wifi calling app, just turn the app on and you should be connected.  Of course, you should make sure to select the option on your account before trying to do this.

  • Steve

I have had this feature for a long time…it was grandfathered on my plan. I just called them and instructed them to remove the $10 charge  for UMA calling since it is free now and they did. Nice!

  • Alwaysright

I ended up calling, and I have also had this feature for a long time, and actually love it.  I put multiple routers in my home, it more than compensates for any overages.  I also have a grandfathered plan, and started UMA calling in 2005.  THEY DENIED ME.  They told me I already have a “Preferred” plan.  I even asked to get transferred to customer loyalty, and they denied me there too.  Bummer, I wanted to get this $10 charge a month removed.

  • UMA

I called today (5/13) to add this.  The CSR said that my phone already has this plan (G2).  Since I don’t have it as a service on my plan and I questioned the notification that comes up “calls and messages made over Wi-Fi will be charged like cellular calls”.  She said I won’t be charged while making calls on Wi-Fi.  Is that true?

  • http://profiles.google.com/s10shane Shane Stenson

i didnt notice any wifi calling unlimited in my plan. i went to add it but it doesnt show up.. so i guess i cant add it to my g2 :( lame..

    • http://twitter.com/mashryock Mark Shryock

Didn’t you read the person above you with a G2?  You don’t have to add it, it is allready there and working.  I also have a G2 and it just works.

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

But what about where it says here where we should get a text to link us to My.T-Mobile to add it? So that’s void now?

  • Texasmade1978

If T-Mobile in fact didnt plan on the deal going thru, then they are pure genius. 6 billion to put into the company is a helluva cash infusion. DENY THE DEAL FCC

  • OUKidder

I turned on my wi-fi.  I went to my apps, scrolled to find Wi-Fi Calling, click on it.  I slid the slide at the bottom of the app screen to on, waited for awhile, then it finally activated and said it was ready.  I made a call and it sounded great.  I’ll start using this at home all the time now.  AT&T would never do this!  Something free?  Never, if it doesn’t help pay dividends to the share holders, it won’t be done.DENY THE DEAL

  • Mr. Grey

With the Wi-Fi Calling option on and the new feature enabled, does it also include incoming calls? Trying to figure that one out.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2AMF5YI6H65I2C7WJPHPKCPHFI Steven

Absolutely works for incoming calls too.

  • J3beme

Anyone get a text from T-Mobile yet? Wondering if we really need to call in or if it’s active for all tmo users with wifi calling available.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2AMF5YI6H65I2C7WJPHPKCPHFI Steven

“Even More and Even More Plus Postpaid rate plans ” just contacted T-Mobile, It is in effect today, but not for my grandfathered plan (which you couldn’t touch now with new signup). Bummer but wi-fi calling is kind of a pita anyway. So it’s free Google phone or Skype.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/35HLVJSI34LMH5M274SCGWDZBY mike

Hey David…Clarification???? I read that all phones w/WiFi enabled phones could use this feature yesterday…

  • Anonymous

Only problem is that of course if you try to leave your house or WiFi zone (which, on these my phone’s WiFi.. is tiny, really poor signal strength)  while on a call it will drop

Just spoke to a tmo rep. Apparently you need to have that extra service added to your current plan. And it’s an extra $9.99
If you don’t have the $9.99 added, the minutes will be taken off from your monthly amount.

Would have loved to have it since am always on WIFI, but still too pricy .

Yep it works. I had to convince the Rep. to dig through the feature list took a minute or so. First time he told me it was going to be $5, I kindly told him to check again and he came back saying it free and he is going to go edit his account after helping me. So yes it’s true ask for it or just hang up and call again.

Finally got a rep online, hooking me up as I type. whew not all reps know about this. look like online chat guys are getting it done, fyi. Thx to David for this huge article!!

  • Svetzy02

Ok, just got off the phone with an awesome rep who got it solved. The program doesn’t have a name yet, and the reps haven’t been trained on it, but it DOES exist and it works for phones with UMA capability. The rep had to search the “T-Community” database for “free wifi calling” and she was able to find it and add it to my plan for free. If you don’t want to call, it sounds like online chat reps know about it per @yahoo-35HLVJSI34LMH5M274SCGWDZBY:disqus below

    • Svetzy02

anyone had luck getting this added to a grandfathered plan? rep told me it can only be added to even more and even more plus…

    • http://twitter.com/Ucf_Knight Andrew Hong

I also have a grandfathered plan and they just told me I would have to switch to a current plan in order to get the service.

But at least they knew what I was talking about.

try the live chat, she never asked about my plan, but then again maybe he saw hat I had even more plus

I added this feature to my account via Braxton M on the Web. How would I know if this feature is actually on my account?

  • http://twitter.com/PsychoKilla666 Rene Shabastari

I called and the lady had no idea what I was talking about, she said you can only get t with the T-Mobile branded 2.2+ update because the app will come with the phone, so she couldnt help.
I used the live chat agent and she said she added it to my line only, the other lines on my family plan would have to do it manually
I’m going to try to download the app from xda and give it a try
    Wish us all luck LOL

My apologizes to posting this question too soon. I checked T-Mobile.com account page and haven’t seen the feature listed. However, my T-Mobile app for my phone shows “Free Wi-Fi Calling” at a $0.00 rate. I am grateful to the information I received from this Web site.

  • J3beme

Just added to to 3 lines here (all mytouch 4g). If they don’t know/see what you’re talking about tell them to look under features and the launch date being the 13th. Thanks Tmonews!

Anyone with grandfathered plan been able to get them to add this feature?

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/35HLVJSI34LMH5M274SCGWDZBY mike

NOPE, seems like they want those grandfathered plans done away with…

      • Anonymous

True. Which is another reason why T-Mo just keeps loosing customers.

        • Amit
