T-Mobile Introducing New Data Plans For Phones

Looks like T-Mobile is preparing some major changes to their current rate plan lineup with new Family Plans and now, new data plans for phones. The new data plans will start on May 22nd and bring along four new options:

  • $10 for 200MB
  • $20 for 2GB
  • $30 for 5GB
  • $60 for 10GB

These changes bring absolutely no overages to T-Mobile customers although customers will be dropped to 2G speeds when they hit their monthly allotment.

I don’t know about our readers but I would have preferred to see T-Mobile provide  an actual unlimited option in between the 5 and 10 GB range and not give us four different options. What say you?

i want to unlimited data back.  if the networks going to at&t, make unlimited data real cheap so we can screw at&t for 2 years. . . .

    • DetroitTechnoFan

F dash dash dash AT&T! They will NOT have my money!

You never had unlimited. “unlimited” has always been throttled at 5 GB.

For 60 bucks you would expect it to be unlimited….It’s unbelievable.

    • J-Hop2o6

YEA! 10GB should be $40.. actually $30.. and unlimited should be $40-50

Is this the end of unlimited data?

    Stay thirsty my friends!

    • DIAMOND PRINCE

It is unlimited data cuz if you go over it. Its still free just a lil slower.

  • http://twitter.com/sulu600 Steve Park

If you live in a 2G only area, what do they throttle you back too?

    • http://twitter.com/wdfichtel W. Daniel Fichtel

If you live in a 2G area, you won’t notice a difference in the data at all – in fact, you may just be better off going to the 200MB plan. Prior to this change, the throttle was close to a 56k modem in speed, not a full 2G.

      • http://twitter.com/sulu600 Steve Park

I’m on the “Andriod Unlimited” 24.95 for now, but it’s really hard for me to get to 200 per month.  When I preordered my MT3G in 2009, that was the ONLY plan that you could have with the andriod.  Like everyone else that preordered that MT3G, our 22 months is up on June 7th, 2011 to upgrade phones at full discount prices, so I am not suprised to see a big promotion and phone release on the 8th of June.  Just wish that the SGS2 was included on that date.  It’s getting harder and harder to even make phone calls on the HTC with only 192meg of ram and 568Mhz CPU.

    • DIAMOND PRINCE

It stays the same wont change..

Prefer to see an unthrottled plan for $40, $60 for 10 Gigabytes? too rich for my blood, not even worth it to be honest..  I reach about 2.5-3GB a month. I think $45 for the 10GB would get more people to snatch up the plan and the average person wouldn’t even reach it, anyways it throttles after.

Why can’t they just leave the data plans alone, this is the crap AT&T has. I just want to be able to keep my unlimited plans without that hassle of worrying weather or not I’m going to go over my data usage…

      • Richardthegrape

Actually it only started getting throttled at 5gb last year. It use to be 10gb. If my memory serves me correctly.

Well if T-mobile is looking to up charges and provide medicore service it looks like they are coming up with a great plan to get customers to jump ship – this with the AT&T merger is more than enough to make me seriously consider Verizon!!

    • Jacob Dimira

This is just more options. “unlimited” was always 5 GB. And now 200 MB is cheaper and no overage. It’s more options. Everyone needs to chill out.

  • rosie

might as well be at&t screw this, i want to keep my unlimited, one of the best things about t-mob =/

    • Jacob Dimira

You don’t have unlimited. Everyone has had unlimited at any point has always been throttled at 5 gb.

  • Anonymous

I’m just glad they don’t have overages, they just throttle.  It’s not like unlimited was truly unlimited before. After 5 gb you were throttled.  I may switch to the 2gb plan, I don’t think I’ve ever gone over that. 10 bucks a month savings.

This is nice for older people though. Everything is a smartphone now that requires data. My parents would never use the internet on their phone, so paying the 10 bucks is a lot better than 30.

  • chris23

yeah, i believe they should have just left it at the 5gb cap as well, but i do see why they would do it because some people want smartphones but wont really use the data heavily except for a few emails. It can go either way i guess….i am just sticking with my even more plus 5gb throttle cap

  • http://beerpla.net Artem Russakovskii

Are we sure this is for phones at all? These look more like the mobile broadband data plans. Verizon and AT&T have a similar setup with the allotment, although they are more expensive.

    • Anonymous

      200mb is currently $10 & 5gb is currently $30. Definitely cellphone plans.

its getting out of hand now for data plans for all the networks.

  • Anonymous

Thank you Jesus for the middle ground 2GB $20/mo plan! 200MB is way too little and 5GB is way too much! I only avg. about a G now so thats perfect!

Wow it looks like im alone on this lol. @#%& Unlimited Data cuz i use wifi at home and a real cpu at work. My wifi is faster than TMO “4G” anyway(atleast in KCMO)

    • Chatter

You aint alone pimp. I am on the unlimited plan but use less than a gig due to wifi everywhere which is much faster anyway!

  • TBN27

to be honest,  it doesn’t bother me. as i have checked, i always have done up to 2 gigabytes a month. i would never reach 5gb. even with all the surfing and facebook checks i do. so go ahead. limit the data usage. it i still cheaper than the competition anyway

  • DIAMOND PRINCE

Dont you guys know that the internet we have now is a 5GB so theres no difference stupid ppl & if you go over the 5GB its still free just a lil slower but its still good… I agree if its $60 it should trully be unlimited but its no difference at least if you have wi-fi you can pay less for your internet plan..

    • http://twitter.com/TimChoi89 Timothy Choi

It’s actually A LOT slower. I experimented with it on the last few days of one of my billing cycles and I could barely load a page…

      • DIAMOND PRINCE

I went over my 5GB so many times and it is slower but it still works good not that bad. & I connect my ps3 to it for gaming (BLACK OPS)

      • VinylDestination555

I have noticed that when the cap is met, it reduces to 3G speeds and isn’t really so bad. But after awhile and you go to 10-15Gb, then it reduces to speeds slower than EDGE and can’t load a page.

    • ColdFeet

You gotta understand, most people here react without knowing the facts (even if the facts are right in front of their faces). T-Mobile gives them data choices that could SAVE them money and they freak out and start talking smack. Stay on the 5g plan and nothing will change! I bet half the people complaining have no idea how much data they use, anyway. They’re just jumping on the bash bandwagon since it’s the “cool” thing to do.

  • Mopar6464

Is this for new customers or for everyone now ?

  • ColdFeet

I can prolly go down to the 2g plan on two lines and save a few bucks, and the 200mb plan on another line. I average about 1 gig a month and have actually been using wifi more lately. I really might consider these plans, especially since they’re all “unlimited” data plans and any overage is just throttled.

  • Tito!

No, these options are actually perfect! you can never expect a true “unlimited” mobile data plan from any carrier at any time in this age .

not for a while the very least [unless you're cricket, which really, who's notices them?] XD
    T-Mobile FTW! (:

    • Anonymous

Sprint actually does offer unlimited, just on a terrible network.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Wicked_1 Wicked1

All these carriers are getting on my nerves with these data plans, but its good there are no overages. But what does this mean for those already under contract, for “unlimited”? I think I pay $30 for data.

I think it depends.  I had the even more+ (Flex pay) account before and it was still completly uncapped/unmetered when I switched to contract on 5/6 .

      • LC

They’re all throttler. People just don’t ever reach the limit so they never know the difference. Really all they are doing is adding different options. Current and grandfathered web plans were 5gb. But not everyone needs that much but needs more than 200mb so they can save some money. Calm down everyone.

They must have gotten my complaint.  For any one who TRULY uses a smartphone with 3G 2GB just isn’t enough.  I’m up against that already and I just got the new contract that went from unlimited to GB about10 days ago.  5 GB will get me through the month if I don’t go anywhere that has 3G most of the time (at home I only have edge).  If I get another job in another city with 4G, I’ll be at 5GB in a few weeks..

    Nice move.

even though I have $20 unlimited preferred android plan on both my lines. Bundled with my $50 family preferred plan.. Another 15% off corporate discount. total I pay $77…

    try that with ATT.

  • Jg01

they just seem to be finding ways to nicle & dime their customers more each day…….they funny thing is…although they are sticking it to the customers….no one is saying anything !!!   what does this say  about the the customers…are they stupid or just lazy ????

    • LC

Or you just don’t pay attention…right now the $30 unlimited plan is 5gb with no overage. This is absolutely nothing new so I just don’t get what people are so up in arms about. NO NEED TO GET YOUR PANTIES IN A BUNCH PEOPLE!!!!

    • John

by giving customers more options? do research before you comment. customers complained about the 5 gb cap and wanted an option for more… tmo gives them an option for more and now they complain about that… wtf… make up your mind people!

  • Jg01

Another thing….with the android phones…it is always synching with google and the other sites from the apps you  install, so this is chewing your data plan in the background without you know…..so , you are paying to have google collect your information, analysis and make a profit from it, without giving you anything !!!

    • shadowscott

not unless you shut off auto sync

    • Jdub

then turn off the sync hard and it saves your battery

    • http://twitter.com/raitchison Robert Aitchison

The “background” data usage isn’t that much,  My wife barely uses data on her phone, but all the background data usage (sync) options are on and she rarely uses more than 30MB/Mo (never more than 50MB)

    • John

plain and simple you are just complaining about nothing here. auto sync hardly uses any data, and any smart user knows you can turn off auto sync with the push of a button.

    • Really?

Dude, anyone can get the information google collects on each internet headers you send.
You’re complaining because they found a way to sell analysis of search demographics in each area?
Why don’t you stop complaining and do something with your life?
What they did was do something with what’s already there.
IP addresses – these are sent through each headers coming out of anything you connect online.
Browser you are using, what version of a browser it is.
Search criteria – just because you search for it (therefore it’s included in the packets.)
A lot of other header stuff you’re ISP attaches to you’re packets being sent to Google Servers.

Knowing all these, tell me what Google did wrong?

If you don’t want to send any info to any site, you better disconnect your computer, and disconnect your life from these world.

oh and P.S. you’re IP address is recorded on this log’s site and so as every other site you visit.
It’s just normal protocol in the IT world to record IP addresses of any request that comes in.

  • DIAMOND PRINCE

You guys know that the unlimited plan that we have now is 5GB so there is no difference!!! Plus its still free if you go over I went over plenty times and I could still use it to connect to my ps3 for gaming online. So its not that slow. $60 for 10GB I AGREE SHOULD HAVE REALLY BEEN UNLIMITED. BUT AGAIN THERE ISNT A DIFFERENCE. Its the same thing!!!!

    • Rawr4dj

really bro dont over exxagerate if your throttled your not goign to be playing no PSN simple as that welll let me rephrase that you wont be having fun pinging every where throuugh maps etc.

    • John

you do know that the 79.99 plan that they are offering is 2GB right? so there is a difference. and if you are playing ps3 games using your phones web you must have killer coverage in your house data speeds throttled or not. and I don’t think it should have been unlimited… bandwidth is expensive and there are many “data-hogs” out there trying to replace their home internet with cell data. Instead of complaining and bitching at cell companies, these people should be complaining and bitching that there are not enough choices for home internet and that the prices they charge for home internet are ridiculous.

      • Really?

yeah, both my parent’s mytouch 4g are getting 10 Mbps over hear in the border of Lakewood, CA and Long Beach, CA. I wouldn’t be surprise if this guy is getting the same or probably maxing out his 4g phone.

  • Vibrant Addict

I’m going to drop down to 2G and save $60 a year with this. I hope EM+ can take advantage of this too.

  • Kirbdaddy

Will current 200MB plans drop the overage, or do I need to update to the new plan?

    • Wish_1d

No if you go over your 200mb you still have free Internet now and when they release the plans. So your good

  • TwiceASmuch

So I can go to Verizon and pay $30 for unlimited or twice as much at T-Mobile for 10 GB’s.  Hmmm.

Total Liar. If u use 15gb, then what r u doing with ur phone, im just wondering? spell it out, how many web pages, map use , how long do spend on ur phone , etc. go on and spell it out, u already lied so it wont b a jump to make up some crazy usage to = 15gb.

go ahead tho, i wanna know how u use so much.

….and how did u get the name vdubb, anyway, lol? i could think of some ways but wanna hear that story for sure. u like vw, u put 2 cigs in ur mouth like a v, what is it, v dubb?

        • Anonymous

You’re not the sharpest tool in the shed. For someone who reads a tech site, I figure you could understand that there is an ability called tethering. But I’m just going to assume you’re a dull person, so take some time to read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering) and you just might understand how it’s possible for someone to use 15GB+ on a phone. and you just might understand how it’s possible for someone to use 15GB+ on a phone.

        • Realcool2000

Ok so ur the master of tethering, that still doesnt explain the 15gb a month. Also, please let us all know how such a “sharp tool” (hahahaha), such as yourself came up with VDUBB as a name, please explain yourself for all of us on tmonews. Are u a rapper? lol

cant believe you used “sharpest tool in the shed” analogy. way to sling an insult, Vdubb. Speaking of dull, nice outfit in ur profile.

Ok, please explain the name. Mine is just silly, but I can tell u put some thought ( you must have fired all pistons in that V6, lol ) into yours.

        • Richardthegrape

Vdubb is prolly a broke ass 15 year old mofo that can’t afford real internet outside the data on his phone, so he’s tethering so he can download his mothers porn, and prolly keep his stupid youtube channel up to date with his stupid uploads! ;)

        • Anonymous

Man, I have to admit that you are entertaining to read. I don’t know if you’re not bright enough to understand how someone can use 15GB of data while tethering to a PC or you actually understand, but your ego refuses to let you lose and causes you to go on moronic ramblings in hopes that the other person gives. Nevertheless, you have entertained me enough and I let you “win.”. Really didn’t want my “complicated” name showing up in the suicide note down the road, LOL.

        • Realcool2000

Man, u have truly lived up to ignorance is bliss standards.

U r way too self absorbed to see that u have been the butt of a joke and that no one takes u seriously.

You don’t have to ever let me win, son. I will always win cause ur not smart enough to compete.

Don’t be upset that the name u made up shows your mental capacity to us all.

Just pick a new that won’t get bagged on……

……and don’t copy my lol’s, VDUMB……..I’m the happy go lucky guy having fun , not you. Lol.

VDUMB, huh? You are right, there is no way I can match your mental capacity. Well, I guess you are the victor of this argument, LOL.

That’s right, I’m the victor, bow down sucka. I won before I even saw this post.

          Hahhaha! Can’t believe it.

          Ok I’m dropping the mic.

  • MattMJB0188

I’m confused.  How will this affect their actual Even More plans?  Will the plans just be talk + text with the selected data plan as an add on?  I’m fine as long as the Even More Plus 500 Talk + Text plan has the 5GB throttle.

    • Wish_1d

Yes it has a 5GB so your good..

  • Peter

This is pretty good, but needs work on the low end.  The cost/MB is WAY too high on the low end, and the cost of entry is too steep.  Add a $5 plan for 250MB and change the $10 plan to have 500MB or 750MB.

And to make the power users happy, throw in a 25GB plan for $150.

  • unknowntmouser

It should have had a step up pricing. To entice it more. Like full 4g speeds 10gb at atleast $50 instead of just double the 5gb amount.

  • Peter

I will add, no overages and unlimited secondary use at slow speeds is critical, and t-mobile delivers.

  • android ftw

Well there goes jobs at tmobile.
